The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is the largest eagle in Kazakhstan, breeding in almost all mountainous and forested areas of the country. In Karatau and the Chu-Ili Mountains, there are large breeding groups of this species, which have been threatened by the development of a network of wind power plants (WPPs) since 2021 since both of these breeding groups are concentrated in powerful wind corridors that are promising for wind energy generation. During the work, we modelled the distribution of the Golden Eagle in Karatau and the Chu-Ili Mountains using the Random Forest image classification method, calculated its numbers in this area and assessed the threats to its breeding groups from both existing and prospective WPPs. The area of breeding biotopes for the Golden Eagle is 18209.9 km2, and the area of habitats is 67602.43 km2. The Golden Eagle population in Karatau as of 2024 is estimated at 434–645, on average 466 breeding pairs (80 breeding territories are known), and 1126–1674, an average of 1209 ind., taking into account fledglings of the current year and immature eagles, in the Chu-Ili Mountains – at 163–292, on average 222 breeding pairs (40 breeding territories is known), and 422–757, on average 575 ind. The number of Golden Eagles migrating through Karatau is estimated at 7276–11423, with an average of 8386 ind. In the zone of influence of the Zhanatas and Shokpar windfarms, which has a radius of 4.5 km, three pairs of breeding Golden Eagles disappeared over 3 years. Some of the birds from the disbanded pairs died due to collisions with the blades of wind turbines, which is confirmed by the remains of 2 Golden Eagles under the turbines. Based on calculations in the CRM “Band”, a risk map with a cell step of 5 km was created, representing an assessment of the probable mortality of eagles during the construction of wind farms in these cells. The results of this study apply to the conservation planning efforts of the Golden Eagle, analysing the risks of developing not only wind energy but also other land uses, including mining and even recreation, and implementing compensatory measures for human intervention in the Goolden Eagle's habitat.

В статье проанализированы сведения о распространении шахина (Falco peregrinus babylonicus) в Казахстане с XIX века по настоящее время. На основании этих данных отрисованы границы гнездого ареала и получены экспертные оценки численности. В статье также обсуждено систематическое положение шахина и предложено его рассматривать в качестве подвида сапсана в новом издании Красной книги Казахстана.

Белоголовый сип (Gyps fulvus) — крупный падальщик, ареал которого простирается от Пиренейского полуострова на западе до Гималаев на востоке. Казахстан расположен на северо-восточном краю ареала вида и, по литературным данным, в XX веке сип считался обычным на территории Казахстана. Однако в последнее время не существует надежной оценки численности и распространения вида, и исследователи обнаружили, что белоголового сипа в прошлом часто принимали за кумая, что привело к необходимости подвергнуть сомнению всё, что известно об этом виде в Казахстане. Таким образом, целью настоящего исследования было в качестве первого шага рассмотреть опубликованные данные о белоголовом сипе в Казахстане с акцентом на Каратау. В качестве второго шага мы стремились проверить прежние полевые данные, посетив колонии и установив статус и численность вида в Казахстане. Единственная крупная гнездящаяся популяция с несколькими колониями этого вида в стране находится в горах Каратау, где мы сосредоточили свои усилия. Случаи гнездования белоголового сипа в других регионах редки или отсутствуют. Мы подсчитали количество занятых гнёзд в два разных года – 2010 и 2022 – и зарегистрировали снижение количества активных гнезд на 95%. В 2010 г. было обнаружено 74 активных гнезда против всего 4 в 2022 г. Причины быстрого сокращения численности белоголового сипа малоизучены. Официальные данные государственных органов Казахстана подтверждают, что в стране используются нестероидные противовоспалительные препараты (НПВП), содержащие диклофенак, кетопрофен и флуксин. Между тем, несмотря на критическое сокращение численности, белоголовый сип до сих пор не является охраняемым видом в Казахстане. Мы рекомендуем принять срочные меры, чтобы понять масштаб сообщаемых угроз и начать мероприятия по сохранению.

С помощью GPS/GSM-трекинга были изучены миграции 6 несовершеннолетних стервятников (Neophron percnopterus), помеченных в горах Каратау (Казахстан) в 2022 г. От птиц за 2022 и 2023 гг. были получены 36063 локаций. Послегнездовой период с момента оставления гнезда и до начала миграции длился от 15 до 34 дней, причём он был короче у самок и длиннее у самцов. Площадь индивидуальных участков в натальной области, определённых как минимальный конвексный полигон (MCP 100%), варьировала от 1,3 до 1560 км2, составив в среднем (n=6) 419,2±610,5 км2. Старт миграции стервятников произошёл с 5 по 23 сентября, миграция длилась 13–28 дней. Дистанции осенней миграции стервятников до места зимовки составили 2038,8–3995,9, в среднем 2764,87±674,11 км по точкам локаций и 1160,3–1893,2, в среднем 1656,45±255,53 км по прямой. Все птицы удачно достигли мест зимовки в бассейне Инда. К середине 2-й зимы на связи осталось 3 птицы, зимующих и летующих в Пакистанском Кашмире на границе с Индией (1 ос.) и в Раджастане (2 ос.). Два стервятника были отловлены местными жителями в Пакистане, один отпущен с трекером, с другого трекер был снят, передан спецслужбам и уничтожен. Площадь, охваченная перемещениями стервятников на месте зимовки в течении 100 условных дней, составила: MCP – 4512,8–62110,3, в среднем 23264,1±22371,7 км2 и Kernel 95% – 239,4–7429,0, в среднем 2390,91±2625,8 км2.

The Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis) is a bird without which it is impossible to imagine Kazakhstan. According to the latest 2018 population estimate, there were 20950–31570 breeding pairs in the country (68.5–82.2% of the world population). The Kazakhstan population has been steadily declining since at least the 1990s (Karyakin, 2018). In the present period, an unfavorable trend is observed throughout the entire Kazakhstan range of the Steppe Eagle, but the lack of regular and geographically representative monitoring does not allow a correct assessment of the rate of decline. Steppe eagles on breeding in Kazakhstan are unevenly distributed in three breeding groups: western, central and eastern.

The Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca) is one of the rare species of eagles breeding in Kazakhstan and inhabiting almost the entire territory of the country. The south and south-east of Kazakhstan is the south-eastern border of the breeding range of the species (Karyakin, 2020). It is this part of the range that will be considered in this paper.

Орёл-могильник (Aquila heliaca) – редкий гнездящийся вид Казахстана. Ранее предполагалось, что одна из крупных гнездовых группировок этого вида, причём самая юго-восточная в ареале, сосредоточена в песках Мойынкум и прилегающих полупустынных районах на юге Казахстана. По результатам исследований 2022–2023 г. мы подтвердили наличие крупной гнездовой группировки орла-могильника в Мойынкумах (было выявлено 38 занятых гнездовых участков) и смоделировали его распространение в Google Earth Engine используя метод классификации изображений – Random Forest (вероятность + регрессия). Площадь гнездопригодных для орла-могильника биотопов в Мойынкумах определена в 4971,09 км2, площадь местообитаний – 55073,86 км2. Численность орла-могильника на рассматриваемой территории оценена в 79–275, в среднем 150 пар. Несмотря на затяжную депрессию численности грызунов, численность орлов остаётся стабильной. Размер выводков до вылета варьировал от 1 до 3 птенцов, составив в среднем (n=5) 2±0,71 птенца на успешное гнездо и (n=9) 1,11±1,17 птенцов на активное гнездо, после вылета – от 1 до 2 слётков, составив в среднем (n=4) 1,75±0,5 слётков на успешное гнездо и (n=9) 0,78±0,97 слётков на активное гнездо. Общий успех размножения по всем проверенным гнёздам составил 44,44%, а эффективность размножения – 58,33%. Основными антропогенными угрозами гнездовой группировке орла-могильника в Мойынкумах являются консервация скважин, ведущая к ликвидации ферм и прекращению выпаса скота, а также добыча урана.

Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) is a globally threatened species. The northernmost limit of its breeding range is located in Kazakhstan and is fragmented into three large enclaves. The Karatau range is one such enclave. It was previously assumed that a small number of Egyptian Vultures nested here; however, research showed the fallacy of such ideas in 2010. In 2022, Karatau was surveyed in more detail to detect Egyptian Vultures. Based on the results of studies in 2010 and 2022, we modeled Egyptian Vulture distribution in Google Earth Engine using the image classification method — Random Forest (probability + regression) and calculated its possible abundance in Karatau utilizing several methods, including Distance Sampling. The area of breeing biotopes of the Egyptian Vulture is determined at 10,378.85 km2, the area of habitats – 34,576.8 km2. The Egyptian Vulture population in Karatau for 2022 is estimated at 171–298 breeding pairs (average of 278 breeding pairs), and 43–74 successful pairs (average of 69 successful pairs) (91 breeding territories are known). Based on the obtained data and publications analysis, we assume that the Karatau Egyptian Vulture population is stable despite deterioration in habitat quality and reduction in breeding success of the species in recent years.

Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug) is one of the most threatened falcon species of Northern Eurasia, the range and the number of which has fallen catastrophically over the last four decades. One large breeding group was concentrated in the Karatau Mountains in southern Kazakhstan. Based on the results of studies in 2010 and 2022, we modeled Saker Falcon distribution in Google Earth Engine using the image classification method – Random Forest (probability + regression). The area of Saker Falcon breeding biotopes in Karatau and adjacent territories is calculated at 4222.64 km2, area of habitats – 9084.3 km2. Saker Falcon population in the study area for 2010 is estimated at 128–281 pairs, 200 pairs on average; in 2022 – 28–66, 46 pairs on average, with a decrease by 77%. The “catalyst” for the collapse of the Saker Falcon population in Karatau is a prolonged depression in the number of rodents. Pairs that survive while nesting almost exclusively feed on birds. The preserved resource is important for population recovery, and the further fate of the species will depend both on restoration of rodent populations and on the pressure of other negative factors, such as poaching and mortality on overhead power lines.

Fieldwork aimed at studying the population structure and demographic indices of the breeding groups of Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis) in the southwestern part of the East Kazakhstan region was conducted from June 24 to July 20, 2020. In total, we recorded 79 adult Steppe Eagles. Within 4 sampled plots, 44 breeding territories of Steppe Eagles were visited, including 11 successful nests with a total of 11 nestlings found. The occupation of breeding territories was 95.45%, and the share of active nests from the number of occupied territories was 69.05%. The share of successful nests makes 25% and of unsuccessful – 31.82% from the total number of breeding territories. All broods found have only 1 nestling, making on average (n=29) 0.38±0.49 nestlings per active nest. In all sampled plots we observe a high proportion of nests with failed breeding (48.28% of active nests). The distribution density of Steppe Eagle breeding territories was 1.16–2.81/100 km2, on average 1.88/100 km2. The density of successful nests was 0.38–0.53/100 km2, on average 0.47/100 km2. The overall Steppe Eagle population inhabited suitable breeding habitats of the East Kazakhstan region was estimated in the range from 1110 to 2368 breeding pairs, on average 1617 pairs.

In order to study the diversity, phylogenetic relationships and distribution of marsh frogs of the Pelophylax ridibundus complex in Kazakhstan and northwest China, we conducted phylogeographic analyses of 125 samples from 53 localities using the mtDNA ND2 and COI genes and the SAI nuclear gene sequences. Phylogenetic inference of mtDNA revealed three main lineages—sister lineages Balkhash and Syrdarya (as the Central Asian P. sp. novum), and the Anatolian P. cf. bedriagae, while from nDNA data, we additionally detected the western form, P. ridibundus. According to mtDNA data, the mean genetic distances between P. sp. novum and two other forms of marsh frogs was more than 5%. Genetic homogeneity within populations of the Syrdarya lineage and P. cf. bedriagae is characterized by low nucleotide diversity and high haplotype diversity. Demographic analyses of the lineages showed past population expansions of the Balkhash and the Syrdarya forms. Divergence from the most recent ancestor had occurred in the Early Pleistocene period (2.46 Mya) for the Balkhash and the Syrdarya lineages, and 1.27 Mya for the P. cf. bedriagae. Our findings provide a first investigation of the lineage diversification and population dynamics of the Central Asian marsh frogs and will be useful for further taxonomic implications and conservational actions.
