Acetone released into the atmosphere can adversely affect human health and the environment. The aim of this work was to evaluate the performance of a laboratory-scale biotrickling filter (BTF) with bioball packing material to remove acetone vapor from contaminated air. The acetone removal efficiency was investigated in two different scenarios: with and without the inoculation of microorganisms. Three strains of bacteria, Pseudomonas putida, Rhodococcus aerolatus, and Aquaspirillum annulus, were used in the BTF. In both cases, the filter units were simultaneously operated for 100 days under three different inlet acetone concentrations (0.18 ± 0.01 g/m3, 0.25 ± 0.01 g/m3, and 0.40 ± 0.02 g/m3) and two different gas flow rates (2.54 and 5.09 m3/h). The results showed that acetone removal was greater in the filter with the inoculated bacteria. In the filter operated without inoculum, the acetone removal efficiency gradually decreased with filtration time from 90.1% to 6.1%. While employing three types of bacteria in the BTF, the efficiency of acetone removal remained relatively stable and varied between 70.2% and 97.6%. The study also revealed that bioballs can be successfully used as a packing material in air biofiltration systems designed for acetone removal from the air.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of two newly developed plate-type biofilters in treating air contaminated with ammonia vapour at different inlet air temperatures (24, 28, and 32 °C). The biofilters had two different structures, straight lamellar plates (SLP) and wavy lamellar plates (WLP), with both having a built-in capillary system for humidifying the packing material made of synthetic hydrophilic fibres and wood fibre. In the packing material of the biofilters, different types of microorganisms were used, including bacteria, micromycetes and yeast. The efficiency of ammonia removal from the air using the biofilters with the two different plate types was investigated. The treatment efficiency of air-containing ammonia vapour reached 81.0–85.2% and 84.2–87.0% in biofilters with SLP and WLP, respectively. The highest ammonia treatment efficiency was obtained in the biofilter with WLP at 28 °C with 87.0% of ammonia being removed. The latter removal efficiency was obtained when a large population of the microorganisms was present with 1.0 ± 0.2 × 107, 1.0 ± 0.5 × 107 and 1.6 ± 0.1 × 109 CFU/g of micromycetes, yeast and bacteria, respectively. The results also demonstrated that at different temperatures of polluted air, different microorganisms predominated in the packing material of the biofilters.

Macroalgae can be a viable alternative to replace fossil fuels that have a negative impact on the environment. By mixing macroalgae with other substrates, higher quality biogas can be obtained. Such biogas is considered one of the most promising solutions for reducing climate change. In the work, new studies were conducted, during which biogas yield was investigated in a three-stage bioreactor (TSB) during the anaerobic digestion of Cladophora glomerata macroalgae with inoculants from cattle manure and sewage sludge at different organic loading rates (OLR). By choosing the optimal OLR in this way, the goal was to increase the energy potential of biomass. The research was performed at OLRs of 2.87, 4.06, and 8.13 Kg VS/m3 d. After conducting research, the highest biogas yield was determined when OLR was 2.87 Kg VS/m3 d. With this OLR, the average biogas yield was 439.0 ± 4.0 L/Kg VSadded, and the methane yield was 306.5 ± 9.2 L CH4/Kg VSadded. After increasing the OLR to 4.06 and 8.13 Kg VS/m3 d, the yield of biogas and methane decreased by 1.55 times. The higher yield was due to better decomposition of elements C, N, H, and S during the fermentation process when OLR was 2.87 Kg VS/m3 d. At different OLRs, the methane concentration remained high and varied from 68% to 80%. The highest biomass energy potential with a value of 3.05 kWh/Kg VSadded was determined when the OLR was 2.87 Kg VS/m3 d. This biomass energy potential was determined by the high yield of biogas and methane in TSB.

‘Algae Service for LIFE’, the project supported by the European Union, seeks to promote best practices in ecological service and the circular economy by implementing innovative complex system of three interlinked elements: i) prototypes for harvesting of cyanobacteria and macroalgae biomass; ii) distant methods for surveying of the blooms and defining hot-spots of algal agglomerations; and iii) restitution of harvesting costs by redesigning of waste algal biomass into valuable products. The current paper describes application of algal biomass part of the project by providing actions in redesigning of harvested waste biomass of cyanobacteria and macroalgae into potential valuable products for sustainable management and recycling of environmental resources. It also highlights the socio-economic aspects of the project and added value of the project for the European Union.

Biofilters (BFs) and biotrickling filters (BTFs) are two types of bioreactors used for treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Both BFs and BTFs use packing materials in which various microorganisms are immobilised. The water phase in BFs is stationary and used to maintain the humidity of packing materials, while BTFs have a mobile liquid phase. Optimisation of irrigation of packing materials is crucial for effective performance of BFs and BTFs. A literature review is presented on the influence of water content of packing materials on the biofiltration efficiency of various pollutants. Different configurations of BFs and BTFs and their influence on moisture distribution in packing materials were discussed. The review also presents various packing materials and their irrigation control strategies applied in recent biofiltration studies. The sources of this review included recent research articles from scientific journals and several review articles discussing BFs and BTFs.

Biologiniai biodujų valymo metodai pasaulyje vis placiau tiriami bei taikomi. Nustatyta, kad naudojant mikrodumblių kultūras biodujos valomos nuo jose esancių tersalų, pavyzdžiui, anglies dioksido. Darbo tikslas – teoriskai įvertinti biodujų sudėties pokycius fotobioabsorberyje su mikrodumblių suspensija. Darbe nagrinėtas biodujų burbuliukų kilimo greitis fotobioabsorberio modelyje remiantis Hadamardo-Rybczynskio lygtimi. Naudojant programinį paketą Com-sol Multiphysics nustatytoa biodujose esancių tersalų koncentracijos priklausomybė nuo bioterpės dinaminio klampumo. Įvertintas biodujų koncentracijos pasiskirstymas per visą kolonėlės skerspjūvio plotą. Modeliavimo rezultatai parodė, kad biodujose esancių tersalų koncentracija artėjant prie fotobioabsorberio sienelių mažėja. One of the most important tools for mitigating climate change is biogas production. Increasing their use requires improving the energy value of biogas by reducing its carbon dioxide content while increasing the methane concentration in biogas. Biological purification of biogas using microalgae strains − merging biogas upgrading method where microalgae use carbon dioxide for their growth during the process of photosynthesis. A four-column photobiore-actor was constructed with Monoraphidium Griffithi, Chlorella sp. microalgae strains, distilled water and MWH me-dium for purification of biogas. Experimental studies determined sizes, shapes and of microalgae cells, the pH changes of mediums used after biogas treatment and the composition of biogas before and after upgrading using photobioab-sorber. Microalgae Monoraphidium Griffithi was estimated to have the greatest contribution to CO2 reduction by de-creasing from 31.0% to 10.0%. The smallest reduction in CO2 was recorded when biogas was flowing through MWH medium. Experiments have shown that the absorption of biogas components results in the release of oxygen. As the biogas was flowing through all suspensions, the oxygen concentration increased from 3.6 to 5.2%. DOI: https://doi.org/10.3846/enviro.2020.720

Elektrocheminių dujų jutiklių potencialas tikslinėms dujoms nustatyti vis labiau vertinamas ir tiriamas dėl savo kompaktiskumo, efektyvumo, mažų laiko ir finansinių sąnaudų. Eksperimentiniams tyrimams atlikti zolių-gelių metodu, naudojant skirtingus tirpiklius ir priedus, susintetintos skirtingos WO3 plonasluoksnės dangos, kurios buvo padengtos ant stiklo substrato ir kaitinamos krosnyje esant 500 oC, 400 oC, 300 oC temperatūrai. Bandymu metu skleidžianciosios el-ektrinės mikroskopijos (SEM) ir rentgeno spindulių difrakcijos metodais (XRD) įvertinta WO3 plonasluoksnių dangų kris-talinė ir morfologinė struktūra, poringumas ir nanokristalų dydis. Elektrocheminės WO3 jutiklio savybės istirtos atliekant ciklinės voltamperometrijos bandymus ir WO3 elektrodo atviros grandinės potencialo atsaką į apsvietimą 0,5 M H2SO4 tirpale. Tyrimo metu nustatyta, kad zolių-gelių sintezės būdu susintetintų WO3 plonasluoksnių dangų kristalinė ir mor-fologinė struktūra priklauso nuo zolių-gelių sintezėje naudojamų priedų bei kaitinimo temperatūros. Didžiausio kris-taliskumo dangos susidarė zolius-gelius kaitinant 500 oC. Atliekant PVA + H2O + EtOH + oksalo r. būdu, kaitintų 500 oC, gautų plonasluoksnių dangų atsako į NOx dujas tyrimus, nustatyta, kad WO3 reaguoja į azoto dujas. Siekiant didinti energinį biodujų efektyvumą, būtina jas efektyviai valyti nuo anglies dvideginio, sieros vandenilio bei kitų priemaišų ir jų sudėtyje padidinti metano koncentraciją. Biodujų valymas naudojant mikrodumblių kultūras – naujas biologinis valymo būdas, kai vykstant fotosintezės procesui mikrodumbliai savo augimui sunaudoja anglies dvideginį. Tyrimams naudotas fotobiologinis absorberis su Monoraphidium Griffithi mikrodumblių suspensija, skirtas biodujoms valyti. Eksperimentinių tyrimų metu buvo nustatyta biodujų sudėtis prieš ir po valymo naudojant fotobiologinį absorberį. Tyrimų metu buvo įvertinta, kad CO2 biodujų valymo efektyvumas taikant Monoraphidium Griffithi mikrodumblių kultūrą siekia 53,33 %. Taip pat dėl tirpumo vandenyje bei fotozintezės proceso po valymo biodujose 17,32 % sumažėjo CH4. Deguonies koncentracija biodujose po valymo padidėjo nuo 2,7 iki 8,3 %. Deguonies koncentracijos padidėjimas rodo, kad teršalus skaidant dalyvauja mikrodumbliai, kurie fotosintezės proceso metu išskiria deguonį.

The examined equipment is a batch bioreactor intended to produce biogas from sewage sludge, vegetal and other organic wastes. The maintenance of an optimal temperature and oxygen concentration inside the devise, as well as the intensity of mixing a substrate, result in methane CH4 actively generated by methanogenic bacterial colonies. Manufacturing biotechnologies and biogas deal with environmental protection, energy and economic problems. For research purposes, considering organic loading (hereinafter, VS/L), four different types of the packing material of sewage sludge, including VS/L = 3.5 g L-1, VS/L = 5.0 g L-1, VS/L = 10.0 g L-1 and VS/L = 15.0 g L-1, were used. The highest concentration of CH4 (75.1%) and yield of biogas (36.78 L d-1) were found using a packing material, the organic loading of which made 15.0 g L-1. Throughout the experiment, the temperature of the mesophilic process reached 35-37°C, and the concentration of oxygen was 0.0-0.1%. The research carried out has disclosed the dependencies of the components of biogas on the number of the days of the performed experiment. With reference to experimental research conducted at the laboratory, a small-sized batch bioreactor can be designed and successfully used in a small farm.

Using biogas instead of fossil fuels decreases pollutants such as solid particles, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides concentrations in the environment. Green energy and development of relevant infrastructure improves air quality considerably. Chemical, physical, biological methods are used for biogas purification. The main difficulties using biological methods are selection of suitable microorganisms’ suspensions and making optimal conditions in photobioreactor. Different origin and structure microalgae suspensions are used applying biological treatment methods. Monoraphidium griffithi, which is widespread in fresh water, has relatively high potential. Microalgae’ cultures absorb the main components of biogas – carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Absorbtion processes are based on photosynthesis. Microalgae absorb specific components of biogas when there are suitable light source and nutrient solvent. The main purposes of the research are to asses emission of biogas using different substrates (chicken manure and wastewater sludge). Also, it was measured main physical and chemical characteristics of both substrates: acidicy, temperature, redox potential, conductivity, biohemical oxygen demand. According results of the research, emission from wastewater sludge is greater than from chicken manure so sludge was chosen in teh next stage of the research. The next stage – asssessment of purification efficienty using Monoraphidium grifftihii suspension. Raw biogas was supplied to photobioreacor (with microalgae suspension). Alterations of methane, carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen sulphide concentrations were measured precisely. According to results concentration of methane in the beginning of the researc was 62%, after 35 days – 69%. Meanwhile carbon dioxide – 37% and 31% by analogy. Experimental research alows to assess Monoraphidium griffithi absorption capacity of ballast components. Results were compared to different scientists’ results which were present in scientific journals and publications. Comparative analysis alows to assess practical possibilities to use Monoraphidium griffithi as biological treatment of raw biogas. Article in Lithuanian. Biodujų valymo efektyvumo tyrimai naudojant mikrodumblių Monoraphidium Griffithii suspensiją Santrauka Iškastinio kuro pakeitimas biodujomis žymiai sumažina teršalų, tokių kaip KD, SO2, NOx, bendras koncentracijas aplinkoje. Žaliosios energijos naudojimas ir atitinkamos infrastruktūros plėtra daro vis didesnę įtaką gerinant aplinkos oro kokybę. Biodujų valymo bei metanizacijos procesams pagerinti taikomi sirtingi metodai: cheminiai, fizikiniai, biologiniai. Pagrindiniai iškylantys sunkumai, taikant biologinius metodus, yra tinkamų mikroorganizmų suspensijų parinkimas ir optimalių sąlygų valymo įrenginiuose palaikymas. Atliekant mokslinius tyrimus ir praktinėje veikloje naudojamos skirtingos kilmės ir struktūros mikrodumblių suspensijos biodujoms valyti. Gana aukštą biologinio valymo potencialą turi Monoraphidium griffithi kultūra, įprastai aptinkama gėlo vandens telkinuose. Biologinio valymo metu iš dujų absorbuojami pagrindiniai nepageidaujami komponentai – CO2, H2S, O2, taigi atitinkamai padidėja CH4 koncentracija – gryninamos biodujos. Vykstantys procesai paremti fotosinteze – esant šviesos šaltiniui bei teikiant reikalingas maistines medžiagas, mikrodumblių suspensija atlieka teršalų absorbento funkcijas. Tyrimo metu įvertinta biodujų išeiga iš dviejų skirtingų substratų (nuotekų dumblo ir vištų mėšlo). Nustatyti pagrindiniai cheminiai ir fizikiniai parametrai: terpės pH, temperatūra, oksidacijos-redukcijos potencialas, elektrinis laidis, BDS5. Įvertinus ir palyginus išsiskyrusių biodujų kiekius nustatyta, jog didesnė išeiga susidaro naudojant nuotekų dumblą, todėl šis substratas naudotas kitu etapu – įvertinant biodujų valymo efektyvumą naudojant Monoraphidium griffithi suspensiją. Šiuo etapu nevalytos biodujos praleistos per fotobioreaktorių, kuriame įdėta mikrodumblių suspensija. Prieš valymo procesus ir po jų nustatyti CH4, CO2, H2S, O2 koncentracijų pokyčiai biodujose. Remiantis tyrimo metu gautais rezultatais, pradinė metano koncentracija siekė 62 %, galutinė 69 %, pradinė anglies dioksido – 37 %, galutinė – 31 %. Atlikus eksperimentinius tyrimus įvertinta Monoraphidium griffithi biodujų teršalų absorbcinė geba. Atlikus palyginamąją analizę, galima spręsti apie šios mikrodumblių kultūros praktinį panaudojimą biologiniuose valymo procesuose. Iš atsinaujinančių energijos šaltinių galima išgauti energiją, kuri vėliau gali būti panaudota elektros ar šilumos energijos gamybai. Lietuvoje ir visame pasaulyje vis labiau auganti pramonė ir medžiagų, iškasenų suvartojimas generuoja didelius biologiškai skaidomų atliekų kiekius. Anaerobiniu būdu apdorojant organinės kilmės atliekas išsiskiria biodujos – ekologiškai naudingas energijos šaltinis, kuris daugiausia susideda iš metano (CH4) ir anglies dioksido (CO2). Panaudojant biodujas kaip biokurą, tokie biodujų komponentai, kaip anglies dioksidas, deguonis, azotas ir sieros vandenilis, turi neigiamą reikšmę efektyviam biodujų panaudojimui. Šiame tyrime biodujų valymui nuo anglies dvideginio buvo panaudotos trys mikrodumblių Chlorella, Monoraphidium ir Stichococcus suspensijos. Per jas buvo leidžiamos biodujos, ir nustatoma biodujų išeiga bei sudėtis. Atlikus tyrimus nustatyta, kad, perleidus biodujas per mikrodumblių suspensijas, anglies dioksido koncentracija biodujose sumažėjo, o metano – padidėjo. Anglies dvideginio koncentracija nuo šeštos tyrimo dienos mažėjo, biodujas leidžiant per visas tris mikrodumblių kultūras.

Recent studies in the area of biological air treatment in filters have addressed fundamental key issues, such as a biofilter bed of different origin composed of natural zeolite granules, foam cubes and wood chips. When foam and zeolite are mixed with wood chips to remove volatile organic compounds from the air, not only biological but also adsorption air purification methods are accomplished. The use of complex purification technologies helps to improve the efficiency of a filter as well as the bed service life of the filter bed. Investigations revealed that microorganisms prevailing in biological purification, can also reproduce themselves in biofilter beds of inorganic and synthetic origin composed of natural zeolite and foam. By cultivating associations of spontaneous microorganisms in the filter bed the dependencies of the purification efficiency of filter on the origin, concentration and filtration time of injected pollutants were determined. The highest purification efficiency was obtained when air polluted with acetone vapour was supplied to the equipment at 0.1 m/s of superficial gas velocity. When cleaning air from volatile organic compounds (acetone, toluene and butanol), under the initial pollutant concentration of ~100 mg/m3, the filter efficiency reached 95 %.

World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as being “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Physical factors (noise, vibration, electromagnetic fields, ionized radiation, etc.) may have a negative influence on both the environment and the health of population. Piezoelectric sensors have been employed in different fields such as medical analysis, environmental monitoring, etc. The object of the research is piezoelectric sensors for environmental monitoring and their simulation. Currently, there are no reliable and valid methods of constructing of mathematical models of piezoelectric transducers, which could be used as a theoretical basis for calculating characteristics and parameters of this class of functional elements of modern piezoelectronics. In most papers the described methods of transformers simulation are mostly based on the use of equivalent electrical circuits and it does not allow analysing stress-strain state of solids with piezoelectric effects. The final goal of mathematical modelling of vibrating piezoelectric elements is a qualitative and quantitative description of characteristics and parameters of existing electrical and elastic fields. Physical processes in piezoelectric transducers which occur using axially symmetric radial oscillations of piezoceramic disk are considered. Climate change is one of the main nowadays problem in the world. The politics and strategies for climate change and tools for reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and green technologies are created and implemented. Mainly it is focused on energy, transport and construction sectors, which are related and plays significant role in the roads life cycle. Most of the carbon footprint emissions are generated by transport. The remaining emissions are generated during the road life cycle. Therefore, European and other countries use methods to calculate GHG emissions and evaluate the impact of road construction methods and technologies on the environment. Software tools for calculation GHG emissions are complicated and it is not entirely clear what GHG emission amounts generates during different stages of road life cycle. Thus, the precision of the obtained results are often dependent on the sources and quantities of data, assumptions and hypothesis. The use of more accurate and effective calculation-evaluation methods could let to determine in which stages of road life cycle the largest carbon footprint emissions generates, what advanced road construction methods and technologies could be used. Also, the road service life could be extended, the consumption of raw materials, repair and maintenance costs could be reduced. Atliekos – nepageidaujamos medžiagos, kurios dažniausiai susidaro dėl žmogaus veiklos. Jos yra vienos isaplinkos tarsos saltinių. Siuolaikiniame pasaulyje didėjant žmonių skaiciui, didėja ir susidarancių atliekų kiekiai. Kasmet didėjantys atliekų kiekiai yra viena is svarbiausių sių dienų problemų, todėl reikia imtis efektyvių priemonių siai problemai spresti. Straipsnyje pateikiami eksperimentinių tyrimų su arklių ir avių mėslu ir jų misiniais su žolinėmis atliekomis (topinambais), sumaisytais su mikrodumbliais, rezultatai. Eksperimentų metu stebėtas biodujų kiekis, metano, sieros vandenilio ir deguonies koncentracijos periodinio veikimo bioreaktoriui veikiant mezofiliniu režimu. Atlikus tyrimus nustatyta, kad biodujų sudėtis priklauso nuo substrato sudėties, t. y. nuo substrato prigimties bei misinių proporcijų. Mažiausia CO2 koncentracija yra issiskyrusi bioreaktoriuje, į kurį įkrauta arklio mėslo, topinambų irmikrodumblių. Air cleaning efficiency tests on placing material load into the lavsan biofilter were carried out. Testing included butanol vapour-contaminated air stream pulled during the boot. The studies were conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection at VGTU that developed a biofilter – an experimental biological air cleaning device. Measurements were done using 60 l/min and 90 l/min air volume aspirators under the initial pollutant concentration making 180, 305, 350, 440 and 545 mg/m3. Before measuring the concentrations of butanol lavsan cartridge, loading was periodically irrigated with nutrient-rich solution. In order to evaluate the influence of microorganisms on genus Pseudomonas, cleaning efficiency tests were repeated – Boot was moistened with water only, which allowed measuring butanol vapour concentrations after the cartridge. At the concentration of 180±9 mg/m3, efficiency reached 41% at a speed of 0,07 m/s and 46 % at a speed of 0,10 m/s. Measuring the performance of the initial concentration of 545±67 mg/m3, efficiency was 54% at 0,07 m/s and 53 % at 0,10 m/s respectively. Tyrimai atliekami naudojant VGTU Aplinkos apsaugos katedroje sukurtą eksperimentinį biologinį oro valymo įrenginį – biofiltrą. Matavimai atlikti leidžiant 60 l/min. ir 90 l/min. oro kiekį aspiratoriumi. Pradinės teršalo koncentracijos – 180, 305, 350, 440, 545 mg/m3. Prieš matuojant butanolio koncentracijas panaudojant lavsano medžiagos kasetę, įkrova buvo periodiškai drėkinama maistinių medžiagų prisotintu tirpalu. Pseudomonas genties mikroorganizmų įtakai valymo efektyvumui įvertinti tyrimai buvo pakartoti – įkrovos sudrėkinamos tik vandeniu, leidžiami butanolio garai, ir matuojamos koncentracijos panaudojus lavsano medžiagos kasetę. Esant 180±89 mg/m3 koncentracijai biofiltro oro valymo efektyvumas siekė 41 %, kai per įkrovą leidžiamo dujų srauto greitis buvo 0,07 m/s, ir 46 %, kai greitis 0,10 m/s. Nustatyta valymo efektyvumas. Esant 545±55 mg/m3 pradinei koncentracijai jis siekė 54 % (0,07 m/s) ir 53 % (0,10 m/s). Reikšminiai žodžiai: lašelinis biofiltras, valymo efektyvumas, lavsano medžiagos įkrova.

Siuo metu didėjant atliekų kiekiams bei vystantis komunalinių atliekų deginimo technologijoms susidaro dideli kiekiai dugno pelenų. Kiekviena salis laikosi savo numatytų ir patvirtintų standartų atliekant isplovimo tyrimus ir nustatant toksinių medžiagų ribą siekiant įvertinti sunkiųjų metalų ir netirpių druskų issiplovimo is dugno pelenų galimybes, kai jie tiesiogiai kontaktuoja su sąvartyno pavirsiumi, gruntu ar vandeniu. Sunkiųjų metalų isplovimas priklauso nuo ekstarhavimo tirpiklio, pH ir taip pat skystos ir kietos medžiagos santykio. Sie isplovimo testai buvo atliekami laikantis LST EN 12457-2:2003 standartu su dugno pelenų mėginiais, kurie buvo stabilizuoti ir deponuojami sąvartyne ir dugno pelenų mėginiais, kurie pries tai buvo apdorojami ir ruosiami. Atlikus sį isplovimo tyrimą buvo siekiama pagrįsti, ar dugno pelenai gali būti deponuojami nepavojingų atliekų sąvartyne ir juose esancių pavojingų cheminių elementų koncentracijos nėra grėsmingos. Taip pat buvo siekiama įvertinti, kaip susidariusio eliuato sudėtis skiriasi, priklausomai nuo to, ar dugno pelenai buvo apdoroti (paruosti galimam jų panaudojimui), ar ne. Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, jog sunkiųjų metalų koncentracijos nėra didelės. Pastebimas tik dugno pelenų ėminyje B (II ketvircio) svino (Pb) koncentracijos padidėjimas – 4,605 mg/kg s. m. Taciau si koncentracija nesiekė reglamentuotos ribinės vertės (RV) (50 mg/kg s. m.). Is gautų rezultatų matyti, kad atlikus isplovimo tyrimą (L/S = 10) eliuate nustatytos kitos tiriamųjų analicių koncentracijos irgi nevirsijo RV pagal 1999/31/EB direktyvą. Experimental tests used a biofilter, a biological air treatment device, filled with a packing material of different origins. With the aim of achieving a higher treatment effectiveness of the device the filter was filled with a packing material composed of zeolite granules, foam cubes, wood chips and barks. Pollutant adsorption, absorption and biodegradation processes take place during biological air cleaning by applying different packing materials. As tests have shown, microorganisms predominant in the process of biocleaning can also propagate in the packing materials of inorganic origin composed of natural zeolite and foam. Through the cultivation of spontaneous microorganism associations the research determined the dependences of biofilter packing material’s humidity, porosity, pressure drop and treatment effectiveness on the device’s operation time. As proved by tests, when applying these packing materials a high air cleaning efficiency remains for quite a long period of time and varies from 88 to 98 %. As the tests have shown, the acetone adsorbed in zeolite pores was not discharged into the ambient air within the entire period of 900 days. This allows a conclusion that the desorbed acetone was degraded by microorganisms. After 900 days of device’s operation effectiveness fell to 88%. A decrease in effectiveness resulted from diminished water retention of the packing material. Such a decrease was predetermined by a reduced fraction of the packing material, which results from pollutant degradation and the impact of microorganisms.

Waste is unwanted materials which are mainly produced by human activity. Biodegradable waste is one of the sources of environmental pollution. Currently, with the growth in population the amounts of produced waste are increasing. One of the most urgent problems encountered today is that the amounts of waste increase every year and therefore effective measures are to be taken to address it. The article presents the results of experimental tests carried out on cow manure and its mixtures with grassy waste. During the experiment the amount of biogas and methane, concentrations of hydrogen sulphide and oxygen were determined in a batch bioreactor under the mesophilic mode. Experimental tests have shown that cow manure supplemented with grassy waste yielded higher amount of biogas and methane concentrations compared to the processing of cow manure alone. Decomposition of pure cow manure yielded 0.33 m3/m3d of biogas. Anaerobic digestion of cow manure mixed with grassy waste mixture at the ratio of 98%: to 2% generated 0.50 m3/m3d of biogas; cow manure mixed with grassy waste mixture at a ratio of 95%:%:5%) generated 0.56 m3/m3d of biogas and cow manure mixed with grassy waste mixture at a ratio 90%:%:10%) generated 0.67 m3/m3d of biogas. The content of methane in biogas reached 23.1%, 26.1%, 26.4% and 29.6%, respectively.

A four– section trickle biofilter was constructed for experimental research. The filter was filled with the packing material of artificial origin. The material consists of plastic balls having a large surface area. The dependence of biofilter aerodynamic resistance on supply air flow rate and the number of filter sections was determined. The aerodynamic resistance of the biofilter was measured in two cases. In the first case, the packing material of the filter was dry, whereas in the second case it was wet. The experimental research determined that an increase in the air flow rate from 0.043 m/s to 0.076 m/s causes an increase in biofilter aerodynamic resistance from 30.5 to 62.5 Pa after measuring four layers of dry packing material. In case of wet packing material, biofilter aerodynamic resistance after measuring four layers of plastic balls increases from 42.1 to 90.4Pa. Experimental research evaluated the possibilities of air treatment efficiency of a cylindrically shaped bio-charge, namely straw, to remove volatile organic compounds from the air. As determined during experiments, the air treatment efficiency of the straw biocharge for acetone removal reached 97.3%, while for butanol removal the efficiency was 86.0%. It has been determined that, with volatile organic compound concentrations increasing biological air treatment efficiency is decreasing as higher concentrations of organic compounds reduce the activity of microorganisms, i.e. their reproduction, respiratory and pollutant oxidation capacities. A higher efficiency of a biological air treatment device is achieved by reducing the velocity of the airflow passed through the biofilter. With airflow velocity decreasing the duration of pollutant contact with the charge is increasing, which raises the biological air treatment efficiency by 1.3 times.

The investigation was carried out using a biological air‐treatment device, i.e. a biofilter with an aeration chamber filled with water saturated with biogenic elements. To accelerate the absorption of organic compounds, air polluted with volatile organic compounds is directed to a water reservoir installed in the lower part of the filter where organic compounds are destructed. In the process of aeration, microorganisms propagate in the chamber, degrading part of pollutants to harmless products, carbon dioxide and water. Since all hydrocarbons are water‐soluble, the aeration chamber is the first phase in a hydrocarbon degradation process. Application of such a polluted air‐feeding model improves the sorption qualities of a charge. When relative air humidity reaches 100%, water‐drops evenly distribute over the entire surface area of the charge and improve the activity of microorganisms. Having passed through the aeration chamber, polluted air is filtered via charges of a different origin, composed of zeolite, foam, wood chips or their mixtures. The carried out experiment shows that the best charge filtering capacity is achieved when supplying air polluted with acetone at the rate of 0.1 m/s. At the initial pollutant concentration of 115 mg/m3 the biofilter treatment efficiency reached 96%. The aeration chamber installed in the biofilter increases both microbiological activity of the charge and air treatment efficiency. Aeracijos proceso metu kameroje dauginasi mikroorganizmai. Jie suskaido dalį teršalų iki nekenksmingų produktų – anglies dvideginio ir vandens. Visi angliavandeniliai tirpūs vandenyje, todėl aeracinė kamera yra pirminis angliavandenilių skilimo proceso etapas. Taikant tokį užteršto oro tiekimo į įrenginį modelį pagerinamos įkrovos sorbcinės savybės. Santykinei oro drėgmei pakilus iki 100 %, vandens lašeliai tolygiai pasiskirsto per visą įkrovos paviršiaus plotą ir pagerina mikroorganizmų aktyvumą. Pratekėjęs aeracinę kamerą užterštas oras filtruojamas pro skirtingos kilmės įkrovas, sudarytas iš ceolito, porolono, medienos drožlių ir jų mišinių. Atlikus eksperimentinius tyrimus nustatyta, kad geriausiai įkrova filtravo 0,1 m/s greičiu į įrenginį tiekiamą acetonu užterštą orą. Esant pradinei šio teršalo koncentracijai 115 mg/m3 , valymo biofiltru efektyvumas siekė 96 %. Taigi biofiltre įrengta aeracinė kamera padidina įkrovos mikrobiologinį aktyvumą ir užteršto oro valymo efektyvumą. Для того, чтобы ускорить процессы абсорбции органических соединений, воздух, загрязненный летучими органическими соединениями, направлялся в резервуар с водой, установленный в низкой части фильтра, в котором органические соединения разрушались. В процессе аэрации в камере размножаются микроорганизмы, которые разрушают часть загрязнителей до безопасных продуктов: углекислого газа и воды. Так как все углеводороды растворимы в воде, в аэрационной камере происходит первоначальный процесс деградации углеводорода. При такой модели подачи загрязненного воздуха в устройство улучшаются сорбционные свойства загрузки. Когда относительная влажность воздуха достигает 100%, капли воды равномерно распределяются по всей площади поверхности загрузки и улучшают деятельность микроорганизмов. Пройдя через аэрационную камеру, загрязненный воздух фильтруется через загрузку различного происхождения, составленную из цеолита, поролона, щепы или их смесей. Эксперимент показал, что загрузка лучше всего фильтровала загрязненный ацетоном воздух, подаваемый в устройство со скоростью 0,1 м/сек. При начальной концентрации загрязнителя, равной 115 мг/м3 , эффективность биофильтра достигала 96%. In order to carry out an experimental investigation a biological air‐treatment device was used, namely, a biofilter with a charge of a different origin composed of zeolite, foam and wood chips. When mixing foam and zeolite together with wood chips for air treatment from volatile organic compounds, not only a biological but also adsorptive air‐treatment method is used. Using complex treatment technologies the device efficiency and the charge service period are improved. The investigation has shown that microorganisms, being predominant in the bio‐treatment process, can breed in charges of on inorganic origin made of natural zeolite and foam. While cultivating spontaneous microorganism associations in the charge, biofilter treatment efficiency was determined to be dependent on the sort of the supplied pollutant, concentration and filtration period. The charge filtration function was most efficient at a velocity of 0,1 m/s when the device was supplied with acetone‐polluted air. Cleaning air from acetone, when the original concentration of the pollutant was 103 mg/m3, the filter treatment efficiency reached 95%. When the concentration of pollutants supplied into the biofilter is reduced and the filtration period is increased, the device treatment efficiency increases as well. При совместном применении разных технологий очистки улучшается эффективность устройства и продлевается срок действия загрузки. Исследование показало, что микроорганизмы могут размножаться и на загрузках неорганического происхождения, состоящих из природного цеолита и поролона. При выращивании самопроизвольных ассоциаций микроорганизмов установлены зависимости эффективности очистки воздуха от вида поступающего загрязнителя, концентрации и периода фильтрации. Фильтрация была наилучшей, когда воздух, загрязненный ацетоном, подавался в биофильтр со скоростью 0,1 м/сек. Эффективность биофильтра при очищении воздуха от ацетона, первоначальная концентрация которого составляла 103 мг/м3 , достигала 95%. Эффективность очищения воздуха в устройстве увеличивается, когда концентрация поставляемых в биофильтр загрязнителей уменьшается, а период фильтрации продлевается.

Biological air treatment devices, biofilters, of four different structures with different origin charges, composed of natural zeolite granules, foam cubes and wood chips, were used for the experimental investigation. Biological and adsorptive air treatment methods are employed to clean the air from volatile organic compounds by mixing foam and zeolite with wood chips. The use of complex cleaning technologies improves the efficiency of the device and extends the useful life of a charge. The investigation showed that microorganisms predominant in the process of biocleaning could also propagate in the charges of inorganic origin composed of natural zeolite. The dependences of biofilter treatment efficiency on the nature, concentration and filtration time of the fed pollutant were determined when cultivating associations of spontaneous microorganisms in a charge. The best filtration efficiency of the charge was achieved when acetone-polluted air was fed into the device at a speed of 0.3 m/s. The treatment efficiency of a biofilter with a humidifying chamber reached 98% when cleaning the air from acetone with an initial concentration of the pollutant of 305 mg/m3. The cleaning efficiency of the device increases when reducing the concentrations of pollutants fed into the device and increasing the time of their filtration., Lietuviška santrauka. Poroloną ir ceolitą maišant su medienos skiedromis, lakiesiems organiniams junginiams iš oro valyti taikomi biologinis ir adsorbcinis oro valymo metodai. Įrenginio valymo efektyvumas pagerinamas bei įkrovos naudojimo trukmė ilgėja naudojant kompleksines valymo technologijas. Ištyrus nustatyta, kad biologinio valymo procese vyraujantys mikroorganizmai gali daugintis ir neorganinės kilmės įkrovose, sudarytose iš gamtinio ceolito. Įkrovoje kultivuojant savaiminių mikroorganizmų asociacijas nustatytos biofiltrų valymo efektyvumo priklausomybės nuo į įrenginį tiekiamo teršalo prigimties, koncentracijos, filtracijos laiko. Geriausiai įkrova filtravo 0,3 m/s greičiu į biofiltrą tiekiamą acetono garais užterštą orą. Šalinant iš oro acetoną, kai pradinė teršalo koncentracija 305 mg/m3, biofiltro su drėkinimo kamera valymo efektyvumas siekė 98 %. Mažinant į biofiltrus tiekiamų teršalų koncentracijas bei didinant jų filtracijos laiką įrenginių valymo efektyvumas didėja.

The publication offers knowledge on the subject of processes that occur in ambient air, water, soil and during physical pollution of the environment. The presented information covers principles applicable to mathematical modelling of environmental processes and levels of such models. The theoretical knowledge encompasses equations of transport processes and their systems, used for mathematical modelling of environmental processes in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere. The publication teaches to compose mathematical analogues for physical models and methods for the solution of numerical equations. It shows how to solve problems numerically as well as to analyse and test numerical results. The publication gives calculation methods for modelling of environmental processes. Computer modelling is used to solve most problems. It describes four computer modelling programs used for the simulation of environmental processes: ADMS – 4, VS2TDI, CADNA A, Phoenics. Phoenics program is intended for modelling of processes in ambient air and liquids. ADMS-4 simulates the distribution of pollutants in ambient air. VS2TDI gives practical insights into modelling of transport of pollutants in soil. Practical skills for numerical assessment of sound wave diffusion are gained using the modelling program CADNA A. Not only environmental protection experts have to be able to measure environmental parameters using various devices, but also perform mathematical modelling of environmental processes and undertake computer-based analytical or numerical solution of equations. Experimental studies have been carried out using an adsorber – a constructed laboratory bench. Zeolite, a natural mineral, has been selected as a charge. This aluminosilicate of a crystalline structure is resistant to high temperatures, aggressive mediums and the impact of radiation. Zeolite is ecologically clean, inert and non-toxic material, which fully suits to be used in most industrial, agricultural, environment fields and at home for eliminating the consequences of ecological accidents etc. For the purification of contaminated biogas, the laboratory adsorber is equipped with three sections filled up with 10 cm of adsorbing material the efficiency of which is established after every filtration column (10 cm, 20 cm and 30 cm). The studies have been carried employing two different contaminants – sulphur hydrogen (H2S) and ammonia (NH3). It has been established that, with a high concentration of sulphur hydrogen, the efficiency has amounted to 96.1% while the degree of ammonia purification has reached 95.4%,when NH3 concentration in biogas is 24.0 mg/m3. Šis kristalinės struktūros aliumosilikatas yra atsparus aukštoms temperatūroms, agresyvioms terpėms ir jonizuojančiosios spinduliuotės poveikiui. Ceolitai – ekologiškai švari, inertinė ir nenuodinga medžiaga, visiškai tinkama naudoti daugelyje pramonės, žemės ūkio, buities, gamtosaugos sričių, taip pat ekologinių katastrofų pasekmėms šalinti ir kitur. Užterštoms biologinėms dujoms valyti laboratoriniame adsorberyje įrengtos trys kolonėlės, pripildytos 10 cm storio adsorbuojamosios medžiagos. Išmatavus teršalo koncentracijas prieš ir po kiekvienos adsorberio kolonėlės (10 cm, 20 cm ir 30 cm), nustatomas adsorbento – ceolito granulių – efektyvumas. Tyrimai atlikti per įrenginį leidžiant sieros vandeniliu (H2S) ir amoniaku (NH3) užterštas biologines dujas. Nustatyta, kad kai pradinė sieros vandenilio koncentracija yra 2371 mg/m3, teršalo išvalymo efektyvumas siekė 96,1 %. Amoniako (NH3) adsorbcijos efektyvumas siekė 95,4 %, kai pradinė NH3 koncentracija biologinėse dujose buvo 24,0 mg/m3. The biological air treatment method is based on the biological destruction of organic compounds using certain cultures of microorganisms. This method is simple and may be applied in many branches of industry. The main element of biological air treatment devices is a filter charge. Tests were carried out using a new-generation laboratory air purifier with a plate structure. This purifier is called biofilter. The biofilter has a special system for packing material humidification which does not require additional energy inputs. In order to extend the packing material's durability, it was composed of thermally treated birch fibre. Pollutant (acetone) biodegradation occurred on thermally treated wood fibre in this research. According to the performed tests and the received results, the process of biodestruction was highly efficient. When acetone was passed through biofilter's packing material at 0.08 m s−1 rate, the efficiency of the biofiltration process was from 70% up to 90%. The species of bacteria capable of removing acetone vapour from the air, i.e. Bacillus (B. cereus, B. subtilis), Pseudomonas (P. aeruginosa, P. putida), Stapylococcus (S. aureus) and Rhodococcus sp., was identified in this study during the process of biofiltration. Their amount in the biological packing material changed from 1.6 × 107 to 3.7 × 1011 CFU g−1.

In recent decades climate change caused by human economic activities has been a matter of growing concern worldwide. Waste production and management resulting from intensified human activities is one of they core environmental problems. Generated waste can be used for the recovery of biogas; however, another problem arises – undesirable pollutant emissions from biogas. In a biogas recovery alternative, pollutants, such as hydrogen sulphide (H 2S) and ammonia (NH 3), make an adverse impact on equipment causing its corrosion. During experimental tests with biodegradable waste the amount of ammonia released in bioreactors was recorded. Adsorbents of a natural origin – glauconite and zeolite – were used for biogas purification. When the initial ammonia concentration was 24.2 mg/m 3 , the efficiency of purification using glauconite packing material reached 93.0%, while when the pollutant’s initial concentration stood at 24.0 mg/m 3 zeolite packing material produced a cleaning efficiency of 77.4%.

Studies were conducted by employing a new generation lamellar structure laboratory air purification device – a biofilter, capable of purifying airflow, polluted with gaseous pollutants. The internal structure of the biofilter is unique in that the bioload, upon which microorganisms dwell and propagate, is fitted onto uprightly arranged wavy lamellas – a layout that creates a capillary moistening effect. Thermally treated birch wood fibers and non-woven caulked materials were used as the bioload in order to increase durability of the load. This paper discusses the results of studies, performed to determine the efficiency of acetone, xylene and ammonia’s biological breakdown processes. The conducted research revealed high efficiency of biological breakdown processes. With the acetone fumes concentration of 0,3 g m –3 running through the biofilter load at the velocity of 0,08 m s –1 and with the number of self-contained microorganisms 1,28·10 10 CFU/cm 2 , the biodegradation efficiency of the contaminant was 94%, with the xylene fumes concentration of 0,3 g m -3 running through the biofilter load and the number of self-contained microorganisms 2,45·10 8 cfu/cm 2 , the efficiency was 87%, and running 0,3 g m –3 concentration of ammonia fumes the efficiency was 88% with the number of self-contained microorganisms of 4,4·10 8 CFU/cm 2 . Organic matter in drinking water is determined by applying indirect determination methods used for quantitative measurements such as total organic carbon (TOC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). These analyses require expensive devices, harmful chemical reagents, and are time consuming. Standard water quality tests are inconvenient during start-up or reconstruction of drinking water treatment plants as samples need to be transported to a laboratory and no on-line measurements on plant performing efficiency are available. For practical purposes, less sophisticated and faster methods to determine organic matter are required. One of the methods could be ultraviolet absorption of water at 254 nm wavelength (UV254). It is a technically simple and fast method for determining natural organic matter, requiring neither expensive measurement equipment nor chemical reagents. The present article aims at investigating the possibilities of practical applications of UV254method to determine the concentration of natural organic matter in ground water. The research proved good correlation between TOC and UV254, as well as between CODMnand UV254. The outcomes of the research indicate that UV254method can be successfully applied to determine natural organic matter concentrations in ground water. Santrauka Organinės medžiagos požeminiame vandenyje nustatomos netiesioginiais kiekybiniais bendrosios organinės anglies (BOA), cheminio deguonies suvartojimo (ChDSMn) ir biocheminio deguonies suvartojimo (BDS) metodais. Šioms analitėms nustatyti būtini brangūs prietaisai, kenksmingi cheminiai reagentai, tyrimai ilgai trunka. Diegiant naujus geriamojo vandens gerinimo įrenginius ir atliekant įrenginių paleidimo, derinimo bei eksploatavimo proceso efektyvumo vertinimą, minėtuosius geriamojo vandens tyrimus nepatogu ir brangu atlikti, todėl šiais atvejais reikia paprastesnio ir greitesnio organinių medžiagų nustatymo metodo. 254 nm bangos ilgio (UV254) ultravioletinių spindulių absorbcija yra techniškai paprastas, spartus organinių junginių koncentracijų nustatymo metodas, jį taikant nebūtina brangi tyrimų įranga bei cheminiai reagentai. Šio darbo tikslas buvo ištirti UV254 metodo tinkamumą organinių junginių koncentracijoms nustatyti požeminiame vandenyje. Atlikus tyrimus apibrėžtos priklausomybės tarp BOA ir UV254 bei tarp ChDSMn ir UV254. Remiantis tyrimų rezultatais galima teigti, kad ultravioletinių spindulių absorbcijos metodas gali būti sėkmingai taikomas organinių junginių koncentracijoms požeminiame vandenyje nustatyti. Biological air treatment devices, biofilters, of four different structures with different origin charges, composed of natural zeolite granules, foam cubes and wood chips, were used for the experimental investigation. Biological and ad‐sorptive air treatment methods are employed to clean the air from volatile organic compounds by mixing foam and zeolite with wood chips. The use of complex cleaning technologies improves the efficiency of the device and extends the useful life of a charge. The investigation showed that microorganisms predominant in the process of biocleaning could also propagate in the charges of inorganic origin composed of natural zeolite. The dependences of biofilter treatment efficiency on the nature, concentration and filtration time of the fed pollutant were determined when cultivating associations of spontaneous microorganisms in a charge. The best filtration efficiency of the charge was achieved when acetone‐polluted air was fed into the device at a speed of 0.3 m/s. The treatment efficiency of a biofilter with a humidifying chamber reached 98% when cleaning the air from acetone with an initial concentration of the pollutant of 305 mg/m3. The cleaning efficiency of the device increases when reducing the concentrations of pollutants fed into the device and increasing the time of their filtration. Santrauka.Eksperimentiniams tyrimams atlikti naudota keturi skirtingų konstrukcijų biologiniai oro valymo įrenginiai – biofiltrai su skirtingos kilmės įkrovomis, sudarytomis iš gamtines kilmes ceolito granulių, porolono kubelių bei medienos skiedrų. Poroloną ir ceolitą maišant su medienos skiedromis, lakiesiems organiniams junginiams iš oro valyti taikomi biologinis ir adsorbcinis oro valymo metodai. Įrenginio valymo efektyvumas pagerinamas bei įkrovos naudojimo trukmė ilgėja naudojant kompleksines valymo technologijas. Ištyrus nustatyta, kad biologinio valymo procese vyraujantys mikroorganizmai gali daugintis ir neorganinės kilmės įkrovose, sudarytose iš gamtinio ceolito. įkrovoje kultivuojant savaiminių mikroorganizmų asociacijas nustatytos biofiltru valymo efektyvumo priklausomybės nuo į įrenginį tiekiamo teršalo prigimties, koncentracijos, filtracijos laiko. Geriausiai įkrova filtravo 0,3 m/s greičiu į biofiltrą tiekiamą acetono garais užterštą orą. Šalinant iš oro acetoną, kai pradinė teršalo koncentracija 305 mg/m3, biofiltro su drekinimo kamera valymo efektyvumas siekė 98 %. Mažinant į biofiltrus tiekiamų teršalų koncentracijas bei didinant jų filtracijos laiką irenginių valymo efektyvumas didėja. Резюме.Для экспериментальных исследований использовались четыре устройства для биологической очистки воздуха – биофильтры разных конструкций. Загрузку биофильтров составляли гранулы естественного цеолита, поролон и древесина, которые использовались для очистки воздуха от летучих органических веществ. В случае применения для очистки воздуха поролона и цеолита в смеси с древесиной применялся биологический и адсорбционный методы. Применение комплексных технологий способствует улучшению эффективности очистки воздуха и продлению срока применения загрузки. Исследования показали, что в процессе биоочистки микроорганизмы могут размножаться и в неорганической загрузке, состоящей из природного цеолита. Культивируя в загрузке ассоциации микроорганизмов, найдены зависимости эффективности биофильтра от характера загрязнителя, его концентрации, времени фильтрации. Лучше всего загрузка фильтровала воздух, загрязненный парами ацетона и подаваемый в установку со скоростью 0,3 м/с. Эффективность очистки воздуха от ацетона при начальной концентрации загрязняющих веществ в 305 мг/м3 для биофильтра с камерой увлажнения составляла 98%. При снижении концентрации загрязняющих веществ, подаваемых в биофильтр, и повышении времени фильтрации загрязненного воздуха эффективность установки увеличивается.
