Abstract

Quantitative organ assessment is an essential step in automated abdominal disease diagnosis and treatment planning. Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown great potential to automatize this process. However, most existing AI algorithms rely on many expert annotations and lack a comprehensive evaluation of accuracy and efficiency in real-world multinational settings. To overcome these limitations, we organized the FLARE 2022 Challenge, the largest abdominal organ analysis challenge to date, to benchmark fast, low-resource, accurate, annotation-efficient, and generalized AI algorithms. We constructed an intercontinental and multinational dataset from more than 50 medical groups, including Computed Tomography (CT) scans with different races, diseases, phases, and manufacturers. We independently validated that a set of AI algorithms achieved a median Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 90.0\% by using 50 labeled scans and 2000 unlabeled scans, which can significantly reduce annotation requirements. The best-performing algorithms successfully generalized to holdout external validation sets, achieving a median DSC of 89.5\%, 90.9\%, and 88.3\% on North American, European, and Asian cohorts, respectively. They also enabled automatic extraction of key organ biology features, which was labor-intensive with traditional manual measurements. 5. Precise, super-resolving intensity measurement by quantum jump spectroscopy of a single neutral atom

Abstract

We present precise, sub-wavelength optical intensity measurement using a single trapped $^{87}$Rb atom as a sensor. The intensity is measured by the scalar ac Stark shift it produces on the $F=1 \rightarrow F'=2$ hyperfine transition of the D$_{2}$ line, chosen for its $F' = F+1$ structure and very small tensor polarizability. To boost signal and reduce measurement-induced perturbations, we use a quantum jump spectroscopy technique in which a single absorbed photon on a transition of interest induces the scattering of hundreds of photons on a bright closed transition. The method greatly reduces systematic effects associated with the atomic state, optical polarization, probe power, and atom heating, and gives the atomic temperature as a second spectroscopic observable. Abstract

Early detection improves prognosis in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) but is challenging as lesions are often small and poorly defined on contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans (CE-CT). Deep learning can facilitate PDAC diagnosis, however current models still fail to identify small (<2cm) lesions. In this study, state-of-the-art deep learning models were used to develop an automatic framework for PDAC detection, focusing on small lesions. Additionally, the impact of integrating surrounding anatomy was investigated. CE-CT scans from a cohort of 119 pathology-proven PDAC patients and a cohort of 123 patients without PDAC were used to train a nnUnet for automatic lesion detection and segmentation (nnUnet_T). Two additional nnUnets were trained to investigate the impact of anatomy integration: (1) segmenting the pancreas and tumor (nnUnet_TP), (2) segmenting the pancreas, tumor, and multiple surrounding anatomical structures (nnUnet_MS). An external, publicly available test set was used to compare the performance of the three networks. The nnUnet_MS achieved the best performance, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.91 for the whole test set and 0.88 for tumors <2cm, showing that state-of-the-art deep learning can detect small PDAC and benefits from anatomy information.

Abstract

We describe optical methods for trapping, cooling, and observing single $^{87}$Rb atoms in a four-lens "Maltese cross" geometry (MCG). The use of four high numerical-aperture lenses in the cardinal directions enables efficient collection of light from non-collinear directions, but also restricts the optical access for cooling and optical pumping tasks. We demonstrate three-dimensional atom localization with sub-wavelength precision, and present measurements of the trap lifetime, temperature and transverse trap frequency in this geometry. We observe a trap performance comparable to what has been reported for single-atom traps with one- or two-lens optical systems, and conclude that the additional coupling directions provided by the MCG come at little cost to other trap characteristics., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

17. Maltese cross coupling to individual cold atoms in free space

Abstract

We report on the simultaneous observation from four directions of the fluorescence of single $^{87}$Rb atoms trapped at the common focus of four high numerical aperture (${\rm NA}=0.5$) aspheric lenses. We use an interferometrically-guided pick-and-place technique to precisely and stably position the lenses along the four cardinal directions with their foci at a single central point. The geometry gives right angle access to a single quantum emitter, and will enable new trapping, excitation, and collection methods. The fluorescence signals indicate both sub-Poissonian atom number statistics and photon anti-bunching, showing suitability for cold atom quantum optics.

25. Teachers' Perceptions of School Failure and Dropout from a Gender Perspective: (Re)production of Stereotypes in School

Abstract

This article aims to analyse teachers' perceptions of school failure and dropout through a gender perspective in the Portuguese context. The statistical data show that, in most OECD countries, the rates of school failure and dropout are higher for boys than for girls. In Portugal, the difference in the school failure and dropout rates for boys and girls is quite significant, and there is a considerable lack of research. This study used a mixed methods design with both quantitative and qualitative data collection. We used a questionnaire and interviews to explore the teachers' perceptions of school failure and dropout through a gender perspective. The study was based on a performative model, which considers the construction of gender as a continuous and changing process as a result of social interaction in all spaces and at all times of life. We consider that school is a space where gender construction takes place, particularly in the relationships between pupils, and between pupils and teachers, which can have an impact on the pupils' educational achievement. The data collected show that most teachers are not aware of gender differences in school failure and dropout. When confronted with the national statistics, the teachers do not recognise that the phenomenon is taking place in their schools. The teachers consider that gender differences in school failure and dropout result from personal and family factors, external to school and reveal gender stereotypes based on hegemonic masculinity.

31. Lifelong Learning Policies Supporting Young Adults in Two Portuguese Regions

Abstract

Precarious jobs and unemployment have become common issues for many young adults due to the unfavourable labour market situation in Portugal. Against this background, lifelong learning (LLL) policies have been called in to play a role in creating economic growth and supporting the social inclusion of young adults in vulnerable educational and economic circumstances. These policies are defined at the national level; however, their implementation depends on the action of local actors who face specific challenges. This paper explores disparities in the definition and implementation of LLL policies targeting young adults in two Portuguese regions. Specifically, we analyse professional courses in Vale do Ave (North) and adult education and training courses in Alentejo Litoral (South). These regions were selected due to their dissimilar economic structure. This study adopted a qualitative approach through interviews with LLL experts and policy roundtables with local stakeholders and decision-makers in both regions. Data were transcribed and analysed using NVivo 10. The study shows that the two regions have different cooperation networks between local stakeholders, and that these impact the opportunities to influence the regional skills formation system differently. Also, the study shows that LLL policies are not designed to address destandardised life courses.

We then independently validated that deep learning algorithms achieved a median dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 90·0% (IQR 87·4–91·3%) by use of 50 labelled images and 2000 unlabelled images, which can substantially reduce manual annotation costs. The best-performing algorithms successfully generalised to holdout external validation sets, achieving a median DSC of 89·4% (85·2–91·3%), 90·0% (84·3–93·0%), and 88·5% (80·9–91·9%) on North American, European, and Asian cohorts, respectively. These algorithms show the potential to use unlabelled data to boost performance and alleviate annotation shortages for modern artificial intelligence models.

Abstract

Leishmaniases are a group of neglected vector-borne infectious diseases that are among the six priority endemic diseases worldwide. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is the most severe clinical manifestation, characterized by systemic and chronic visceral involvement and high mortality in immunosuppressed and untreated patients. VL can be complicated into post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), and when dermatologic disorders occur simultaneously with active VL, an intermediate clinical form called para-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (para-KDL) occurs. This clinical form is of great epidemiological relevance, as humans act as a source of infection for vectorial transmission. In the Americas, Brazil is among the seven countries responsible for more than 90% of VL cases, though reports of PKDL and para-KDL are rare. This paper presents three cases of VL-HIV co-infection with Leishmania-containing skin lesions resembling para-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis. The cases were investigated by the team from the Infectious Diseases Department of University Hospital (HUMAP/UFMS) in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The three patients exhibited skin lesions where amastigote forms of L. (L.) infantum were identified. All cases exhibited similar clinical manifestations of para-KDL, including fever, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia, and disseminated skin lesions. The study described the prevalence of comorbidities, the incidence of VL relapse, and the therapeutic regimen in relation to the outcomes. The study underscores the importance of follow-up and secondary prophylaxis in patients with VL, which are essential for the efficacy of the treatment. Furthermore, the study provides insight into the potential epidemiological profile of para-KDL cases in Brazil, which contributes to the development of more efficient clinical management strategies for patients.
