Research Areas: Orthopedics Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex joint disease and chronic pain source, affecting a patient's quality of life and posing a financial burden. As the dog is considered a nearly ideal species for translation research of human OA and the most used model for research, exploring spontaneous dog OA under the One Health/One Medicine concept can improve both humans and dogs' health and well-being. Methods In a clinical treatment experiment, forty (N=40) joints were selected and randomly assigned to a control group (CG), which received 0.9% NaCl or a treatment (HG), which received Hylan G-F 20. Evaluations were performed on treatment day (T0), 8, 15, 30, 90, and 180 days post-treatment. They consisted of four different Clinical Metrology Instruments (CMI), evaluation of weight distribution, joint range of motion, thigh girth, radiographic and digital thermography imaging, synovial fluid interleukin-1 (IL-1), and C-reactive protein concentrations. Results were compared with repeated measures ANOVA, with a Huynh-Feldt correction, Paired samples T-test, or Wilcoxon signed-ranks test, with pResults Patients had a mean age of 6.5 +/- 2.4 years and a bodyweight of 26.6 +/- 5.2kg, and joints graded as mild (n=28, 70%), moderate (n=6, 15%), and severe OA (n=6, 15%). Resumo: Realizou-se um estudo em 2014, envolvendo 25 sistemas agroflorestais (SAFs) biodiversos implantados em Mato Grosso do Sul (55°17? e 55°22? de longitude Oeste e 21°58' e 22°06' de latitude Sul), objetivando caracterizar as espécies vegetais existentes, as práticas de manejo utilizadas nos agroecossistemas e formas de uso das espécies vegetais. Constatou-se que os SAFs, tipo quintais agroflorestais, proporcionam expressiva mudança de paisagem, estabelecendo microclimas estáveis no entorno das residências, garantindo bem-estar às famílias; contribuem com a restauração do equilíbrio biológico local; viabilizam a diversificação de atividades produtivas, incrementando a dieta alimentar das famílias e a segurança alimentar e nutricional. The cashewwhitefly (CW), Aleurodicus cocois, is an important pest of cashewin Brazil. The use of resistant plants may be an effective strategy for the control of this pest. In a preliminary assay,we found thatdwarf-cashewclones showdifferent levels of resistance to CW.Here,we hypothesized that such resistance is associated with morphological characteristics of cashew leaves and their content of phenolic compounds. We determined (i) the attractiveness and suitability for oviposition of five dwarf-cashew clones towards CW, (ii) the leaf morphology and chemistry of those clones, and (iii) the relationship between leaf characteristics and resistance to CW. In greenhouse multiple-choice assays, PRO143/7 and CCP76 showed, respectively, the lowest and highest counts of both CWadults and eggs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that PRO143/7 and EMBRAPA51 have, respectively, the highest and lowest numbers of leaf glandular trichomes.We found a negative correlation between number of trichomes in the abaxial surface of cashew leaves and CW oviposition. In addition, confocal microscopy analysis and histochemical tests with ferrous sulfate indicated a higher accumulation of phenolic compounds in the resistant clone PRO143/7 relative to the other clones. Dwarf-cashew clones did not significantly differ based on the number of leaf epicuticular striations, and the thickness of both leaf lamina and the epidermal layer. The resistance of dwarf-cashew plants to CW is associated with an elevated number of trichomes and accumulation of high levels of phenolics in leaves. This paper presents the computing infrastructure used in an autonomous unmanned small-scale sailboat. The system is based on a FPGA and includes custom designed interfaces for the various sensors and actuators used in the sailboat. The central processing unit is a 32-bit 50 MHz RISC microprocessor implemented as a soft IP core in the FPGA. The computing system runs uClinux, a simplified version of the popular Linux operating system. The usage of a reconfigurable platform enables a quick reconfiguration of the logic circuit implemented in the FPGA, facilitating the development stage and allowing a dynamic switch among different implementations, according to the navigation requirements and environmental conditions.
