17. Pure signet ring cell carcinoma of the breast: a rare entity.

Abstract

Signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is defined as carcinoma composed of epithelial cells with intracytoplasmic mucin that causes peripheral displacement of the nucleus, creating a crescent-shaped morphology. It can arise in many organs; however, pure primary SRCC of the breast is very rare. The WHO classification of tumours placed SRCC of the breast under mucin-producing carcinomas; however, nowadays, it is no longer regarded as a histological variant of invasive carcinoma. To date, only few cases have been reported in the literature. This report presents a woman in her 70s with primary pure SRCC of the breast. The patient underwent right lumpectomy with sentinel lymph node dissection and was proposed adjuvant chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy and hormonal treatment. She had no disease relapse until today. The histological features and treatment approach of this rare entity are debated in light of relevant literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

38. Rising Expectations in Brazil and Chile

Abstract

Two themes connect Brazil and Chile: one is economic success; the other is social unrest. Protests rocked cities across Brazil in June 2013, and in Chile, recent student protests turned violent. Yet living conditions in both nations are better now than they've ever been. Successful economic and social reforms over the last two decades have led to major improvements in the quality of life. Millions of Brazilians and Chileans have joined the middle class, and the percentage living in poverty has plummeted. The quality of public education has also improved substantially in both countries since 1990. So why are citizens in these countries taking to the streets? The authors of this article write that the core problem is that the quality of schooling has not caught up with the improvements in the standard of living. Brazil and Chile are increasingly middle-class nations but still have the school systems of developing countries. Both are ranked in the bottom quarter of participating countries on PISA (Program for International Student Assessment). Brazil ranked 53 and Chile 44 out of 65 countries that participated in the most recent PISA reading exam. While the demonstrations in Brazil and Chile will eventually subside, their roots will surely remain a societal force. Newly empowered middle-class citizens will continue to engage, until leaders are able to propel society forward at a faster rate and the schools are ranked among the top performers rather than just the top improvers.

Abstract

Indivíduos buscam constantemente alternativas para se proteger de perdas inesperadas nos seus níveis de renda, visto que estas impactam diretamente os seus níveis de consumo e bem-estar. Neste sentido, os ativos financeiros possuem um papel relevante como mecanismo provedor de suavização de consumo para os indivíduos. Dessa forma, nós recuperamos o fator estocástico de desconto através do problema do investidor e estudamos a sua relação com os retornos do S&P500, títulos do governo americano, ouro e índice de volatilidade (VIX). Nós encontramos evidências de que os títulos americanos, o ouro e o VIX são ativos safe haven para a economia norte-americana. Contudo, nós não conseguimos inferir sobre a propriedade de hedge. Ademais, nós encontramos que o retorno do S&P500 possui é negativamente relacionado com o fator estocástico de desconto na média da amostra, sendo esta maior em períodos considerados de crise para o mercado. Agents are constantly looking for alternatives to protect themselves from unexpected losses in their income, since these directly impact their consumption and well-being levels. Financial assets play an important role in providing a mechanism for smoothing the individual consumption. In this sense, we recover the stochastic discount factor (SDF) from the investor problem and study its relation with the returns of S&P 500, U.S. Treasury bonds, gold and volatility index (VIX). We found evidence that U.S. Treasury bonds, gold and VIX are safe haven assets for the U.S. economy, although we cannot infer about the hedge property. Furthermore, the S&P 500 return showed a negative relationship with the SDF on average on the sample with a higher negative correlation in crisis periods of market.

Abstract

Since January 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has dominated the media and exercises pressure on governments worldwide. Apart from its effects on economies, education systems and societies, the pandemic has also influenced climate change research. This paper examines the extent to which COVID-19 has influenced climate change research worldwide during the first wave at the beginning of 2020 and how it is perceived to exploit it in the future. This study utilised an international survey involving those dedicated to climate change science and management research from Academia, Government, NGOs, and international agencies in 83 countries. The analysis of responses encompasses four independent variables: Institutions, Regions, Scientific Areas, and the level of economic development represented by the Human Development Index (HDI). Results show that: (1) COVID-19 modified the way the surveyed researchers work, (2) there are indicators that COVID-19 has already influenced the direction of climate change and adaptation policy implementation, and (3) respondents perceived (explicitly concerning the COVID-19 lockdowns of March-April 2020), that the pandemic has drawn attention away from climate policy. COVID- 19 has influenced the agenda of climate change research for more than half of the respondents and is likely to continue in the future, suggesting that the impacts on their research will still be felt for many years. Abstract

There is a perceived need to develop approaches, methods and tools that may help higher education institutions to systematically introduce the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into research and teaching as an intrinsic part of their programs. However, at present, there is a gap in the literature on the suitable means to do so. This paper addresses this gap by examining the many foci and commitments for and about the SDGs that are currently included in university programs. An overview of the SDGs’ focus at universities was presented using a survey to gather qualitative and quantitative data. Based on current trends and gaps, this paper identifies the need for a framework which may be of assistance in facilitating the inclusion of the SDGs as a whole, and individually targets in particular in the programs of institutions of higher education. The scientific contribution of this paper value lies in the fact that this is one of the first papers to tackle the need for a framework which caters to a more systematic introduction of the SDGs in university programs. The basis for the framework approach, here introduced, includes institutional, thematic, structural and personal/individual aspects which need to be considered for proper implementation of the SDGs at the university level.
