Search

Progress in understanding multi-scale collisionless plasma phenomena requires employing tools which balance computational efficiency and physics fidelity. Collisionless fluid models are able to resolve spatio-temporal scales that are unfeasible with fully kinetic models. However, constructing such models requires truncating the infinite hierarchy of moment equations and supplying an appropriate closure to approximate the unresolved physics. Data-driven methods have recently begun to see increased application to this end, enabling a systematic approach to constructing closures. Here, we utilise sparse regression to search for heat flux closures for one-dimensional electrostatic plasma phenomena. We examine OSIRIS particle-in-cell simulation data of Landau-damped Langmuir waves and two-stream instabilities. Sparse regression consistently identifies six terms as physically relevant, together regularly accounting for more than 95% of the variation in the heat flux. We further quantify the relative importance of these terms under various circumstances and examine their dependence on parameters such as thermal speed and growth/damping rate. The results are discussed in the context of previously known collisionless closures and linear collisionless theory.

Plasma-based acceleration (PBA) has emerged as a promising candidate for the accelerator technology used to build a future linear collider and/or an advanced light source. In PBA, a trailing or witness particle beam is accelerated in the plasma wave wakefield (WF) created by a laser or particle beam driver. The distance over which the drive beam evolves is several orders of magnitude larger than the wake wavelength. This large disparity in length scales is amenable to the quasi-static approach. Three-dimensional (3D), quasi-static (QS), particle-in-cell (PIC) codes, e.g., QuickPIC, have been shown to provide high fidelity simulation capability with 2-4 orders of magnitude speedup over 3D fully explicit PIC codes. We describe a mesh refinement scheme that has been implemented into the 3D QS PIC code, QuickPIC. We use a very fine (high) resolution in a small spatial region that includes the witness beam and progressively coarser resolutions in the rest of the simulation domain. A fast multigrid Poisson solver has been implemented for the field solve on the refined meshes and a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) based Poisson solver is used for the coarse mesh. The code has been parallelized with both MPI and OpenMP, and the parallel scalability has also been improved by using pipelining. A preliminary adaptive mesh refinement technique is described to optimize the computational time for simulations with an evolving witness beam size. Several test problems are used to verify that the mesh refinement algorithm provides accurate results. The results are also compared to highly resolved simulations with near azimuthal symmetry using a new hybrid QS PIC code QPAD that uses a PIC description in the coordinates ($r$, $ct-z$) and a gridless description in the azimuthal angle, $\phi$.

The past decade has seen tremendous progress in the production and utilization of vortex and vector laser pulses. Although both are considered as structured light beams, the vortex lasers have helical phase fronts and phase singularities, while the vector lasers have spatially variable polarization states and polarization singularities. In contrast to the vortex pulses that carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), the vector laser pulses have a complex spin angular momentum (SAM) and OAM coupling. Despite many potential applications enabled by such pulses, the generation of high-power/-intensity vortex and vector beams remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate using theory and three-dimensional simulations that the strongly-coupled stimulated Brillouin scattering (SC-SBS) process in plasmas can be used as a promising amplification technique with up to 65% energy transfer efficiency from the pump beam to the seed beam for both vortex and vector pulses. We also show that SC-SBS is strongly polarization-dependent in plasmas, enabling an all-optical polarization control of the amplified seed beam. Additionally, the interaction of such structured lasers with plasmas leads to various angular momentum couplings and decouplings that produce intense new light structures with controllable OAM and SAM. This scheme paves the way for novel optical devices such as plasma-based amplifiers and light field manipulators.

The binary Monte Carlo (MC) collision algorithm is a standard and robust method to include binary Coulomb collision effects in particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of plasmas. Here, we show that the coupling between PIC and MC algorithms can give rise to (nonphysical) numerical heating of the system, that significantly exceeds that observed when these algorithms operate independently. We argue that this deleterious effect results from an inconsistency between the particle motion associated with MC-collisions and the work performed by the collective electromagnetic field on the PIC grid. This inconsistency manifests as the (artificial) stochastic production of electromagnetic energy, which ultimately heats the plasma particles. The MC-induced numerical heating can significantly impact the evolution of the simulated system for long simulation times ($\gtrsim 10^3$ collision periods, for typical numerical parameters). We describe the source of the MC-induced numerical heating analytically and discuss strategies to minimize it.

At the core of some of the most important problems in plasma physics -- from controlled nuclear fusion to the acceleration of cosmic rays -- is the challenge to describe nonlinear, multi-scale plasma dynamics. The development of reduced plasma models that balance between accuracy and complexity is critical to advancing theoretical comprehension and enabling holistic computational descriptions of these problems. Here, we report the data-driven discovery of accurate reduced plasma models, in the form of partial differential equations, directly from first-principles particle-in-cell simulations. We achieve this by using an integral formulation of sparsity-based model-discovery techniques and show that this is crucial to robustly identify the governing equations in the presence of discrete particle noise. We demonstrate the potential of this approach by recovering the fundamental hierarchy of plasma physics models -- from the Vlasov equation to magnetohydrodynamics. Our findings show that this data-driven methodology offers a promising new route to accelerate the development of reduced theoretical models of complex nonlinear plasma phenomena and to design computationally efficient algorithms for multi-scale plasma simulations.

The impact of 400 keV $Ar^+$ ion irradiation on the magnetic and electrical properties of in-plane magnetized magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) stacks was investigated by ferromagnetic resonance, vibrating sample magnetometry and current-in-plane tunneling techniques. The irradiation-induced changes of the magnetic anisotropy, coupling energies and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) exhibited a correlated dependence on the ion fluence, which allowed us to distinguish between two irradiation regimes. In the low-fluence regime, ${\Phi} < 10^{14} cm^{-2}$, the parameters required for having a functioning MTJ were preserved: the anisotropy of the FeCoB free layer (FL) was weakly modulated following a small decrease in the saturation magnetization $M_S$; the TMR decreased continuously; the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) and the exchange bias (EB) decreased slightly. In the high-fluence regime, ${\Phi} > 10^{14} cm^{-2}$, the MTJ was rendered inoperative: the modulation of the FL anisotropy was strong, caused by a strong decrease in $M_S$, ascribed to a high degree of interface intermixing between the FL and the Ta capping; the EB and IEC were also lost, likely due to intermixing of the layers composing the synthetic antiferromagnet; and the TMR vanished due to the irradiation-induced deterioration of the MgO barrier and MgO/FeCoB interfaces. We demonstrate that the layers surrounding the FL play a decisive role in determining the trend of the magnetic anisotropy evolution resulting from the irradiation, and that an ion-fluence window exists where such a modulation of magnetic anisotropy can occur, while not losing the TMR or the magnetic configuration of the MTJ., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, Supplemental material with 8 pages, 9 figures

We investigate charge and spin currents that may appear in some materials, considering the possible couplings and the symmetries of a field-theoretical model presented here. We inspect these possible currents in (1+2) dimensions by adopting an N =2 - D=3 supersymmetric framework with a Chern-Simons term and non-minimal couplings as well. We discuss a number of aspects in connection with a vortex configuration that is topologically viable. The new features of our investigation take into account the nature of both the U(1)-symmetry and supersymmetry (SUSY) breakings in presence of the vortex. We focus on aspects of the fermionic sector and their interactions with the currents. In connection with the spectrum of fermions, we also derive the mass gap in terms of the parameters of the the model. Another point we highlight is the role SUSY in our considerations. Once graphene and topological insulator materials are described by a Dirac-like equation, we assume, as a working hypothesis, that SUSY may also have some influence on the properties of these materials. Along this line, it is mandatory to connect the SUSY breakdown to this class of materials. We believe that our discussion could bring some elements for the understanding of this category of lower-dimensional systems., Comment: 20 pages and 5 figures

We investigate the self-consistent particle acceleration physics associated with the development of the kink instability (KI) in nonrelativistic, electron-ion plasma jets. Using 3D fully kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, we show that the KI efficiently converts the initial toroidal magnetic field energy into energetic ions. The accelerated ions form a nonthermal power-law tail in the energy spectrum, containing $\simeq10\%$ of the initial magnetic field energy, and with the maximum ion energy extending to the confinement energy of the jet. We find that the ions are efficiently accelerated by the concerted action of the motional electric field and highly tangled magnetic field that develop in the nonlinear phase of the KI: fast curvature drift motions of ions across magnetic field lines enable their acceleration along the electric field. We further investigate the role of Coulomb collisions on the ion acceleration efficiency, and identify the collisional threshold above which nonthermal ion acceleration is suppressed. Our results reveal how energetic ions may result from unstable nonrelativistic plasma jets in space and astrophysics, and provide constraints on the plasma conditions required to reproduce this acceleration mechanism in laboratory experiments.

We report on structural and optical properties of InGaN/GaN thin films, with a 0.46o misalignment between the surface and the (0001) plane, which were grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on 0.34o miscut sapphire substrates. X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectivity were used to precisely measure the degree of miscut. Reciprocal space mapping was employed to determine the lattice parameters and strain state of the InGaN layers. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry with channeling was employed to measure their composition and crystalline quality with depth resolution. No strain anisotropy was observed. Polarization-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy was carried out to examine the effect of the miscut on the bandedge emission of the epilayer.

W-O deposits with complex morphologies and significant He contents will growth on the surface of plasma facing components exposed to He discharges. To mimic the re/co-deposition process, W-O-He coatings were produced by implanting He+ ions on W films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The use of appropriate PLD experimental parameters such as Ar or He background atmospheres induces the deposition of porous or amorphous-like W-O structures, respectively. After multiple ion implantation stages using 150 keV, 100 keV and 50 keV incident He+ ion beams with a total fluence of 5 x 1017 ion/cm^2, significant amounts of He were identified in porous coatings by Rutherford backscattering (RBS). Time-of-flight elastic recoil detection (TOF-ERDA) measurements showed that most of the implanted He was already released from the porous coatings five month after implantation while for the case of amorphous ones the He content remains significant at deeper layers and smoothly decrease towards the surface, as result of a different morphology and nanostructure. Relativistic magnetized jets from active galaxies are among the most powerful cosmic accelerators, but their particle acceleration mechanisms remain a mystery. We present a new acceleration mechanism associated with the development of the helical kink instability in relativistic jets, which leads to the efficient conversion of the jet's magnetic energy into nonthermal particles. Large-scale three-dimensional ab initio simulations reveal that the formation of highly tangled magnetic fields and a large-scale inductive electric field throughout the kink-unstable region promotes rapid energization of the particles. The energy distribution of the accelerated particles develops a well-defined power-law tail extending to the radiation-reaction limited energy in the case of leptons, and to the confinement energy of the jet in the case of ions. When applied to the conditions of well-studied bright knots in jets from active galaxies, this mechanism can account for the spectrum of synchrotron and inverse Compton radiating particles, and offers a viable means of accelerating ultra-high-energy cosmic rays to $10^{20}$ eV.

We investigate the formation of collisionless magnetized shocks triggered by the interaction between magnetized plasma flows and miniature-sized (order of plasma kinetic-scales) magnetic obstacles resorting to massively parallel, full particle-in-cell simulations, including the electron kinetics. The critical obstacle size to generate a compressed plasma region ahead of these objects is determined by independently varying the magnitude of the dipolar magnetic moment and the plasma magnetization. We find that the effective size of the obstacle depends on the relative orientation between the dipolar and plasma internal magnetic fields, and we show that this may be critical to form a shock in small-scale structures. We study the microphysics of the magnetopause in different magnetic field configurations in 2D and compare the results with full 3D simulations. Finally, we evaluate the parameter range where such miniature magnetized shocks can be explored in laboratory experiments.

Raman and Brillouin amplification are two schemes for amplifying and compressing short laser pulses in plasma. Analytical models have already been derived for both schemes, but the full consequences of these models are little known or used. Here, we present new criteria that govern the evolution of the attractor solution for the seed pulse in Raman and Brillouin amplification, and show how the initial laser pulses need to be shaped to control the properties of the final amplified seed and improve the amplification efficiency., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters in July 2016

We identify and explore a high orbital angular momentum (OAM) harmonics generation and amplification mechanism that manipulates the OAM independently of any other laser property, by preserving the initial laser wavelength, through stimulated Raman backscattering in a plasma. The high OAM harmonics spectra can extend at least up to the limiting value imposed by the paraxial approximation. We show with theory and particle-in-cell simulations that the orders of the OAM harmonics can be tuned according to a selection rule that depends on the initial OAM of the interacting waves. We illustrate the high OAM harmonics generation in a plasma using several examples including the generation of prime OAM harmonics. Twisted Laguerre-Gaussian lasers, with orbital angular momentum and characterised by doughnut shaped intensity profiles, provide a transformative set of tools and research directions in a growing range of fields and applications, from super-resolution microcopy and ultra-fast optical communications to quantum computing and astrophysics. The impact of twisted light is widening as recent numerical calculations provided solutions to long-standing challenges in plasma-based acceleration by allowing for high gradient positron acceleration. The production of ultrahigh intensity twisted laser pulses could then also have a broad influence on relativistic laser-matter interactions. Here we show theoretically and with ab-initio three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, that stimulated Raman backscattering can generate and amplify twisted lasers to Petawatt intensities in plasmas. The microphysics of relativistic collisionless sheared flows is investigated in a configuration consisting of a globally neutral, relativistic $e^-e^+$ beam streaming through a hollow plasma/dielectric channel. We show through multidimensional PIC simulations that this scenario excites the Mushroom instability (MI), a transverse shear instability on the electron-scale, when there is no overlap (no contact) between the $e^-e^+$ beam and the walls of the hollow plasma channel. The onset of the MI leads to the conversion of the beam's kinetic energy into magnetic (and electric) field energy, effectively slowing down a globally neutral body in the absence of contact. The collisionless shear physics explored in this configuration may operate in astrophysical environments, particularly in highly relativistic and supersonic settings where macroscopic shear processes are stable.

In this paper we show a plausible mechanism that could lead to the formation of the Dark Lanes in Lunar Swirls, and the electromagnetic shielding of the lunar surface that results in the preservation of the white colour of the lunar regolith. We present the results of a fully self-consistent 2 and 3 dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of mini-magnetospheres that form above the lunar surface and show that they are consistent with the formation of `lunar swirls' such as the archetypal formation Reiner Gamma. The simulations show how the microphysics of the deflection/shielding of plasma operates from a kinetic-scale cavity, and show that this interaction leads to a footprint with sharp features that could be the mechanism behind the generation of `dark lanes'. The physics of mini-magnetospheres is described and shown to be controlled by space-charge fields arising due to the magnetized electrons and unmagnetized ions. Electron-scale surface waves are shown to be unstable in the transverse plane of a shear flow in an initially unmagnetized plasma, unlike in the (magneto)hydrodynamics case. It is found that these unstable modes have a higher growth rate than the closely related electron-scale Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in relativistic shears. Multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations verify the analytic results and further reveal the emergence of mushroom-like electron density structures in the nonlinear phase of the instability, similar to those observed in the Rayleigh Taylor instability despite the great disparity in scales and different underlying physics. Macroscopic ($\gg c/\omega_{pe}$) fields are shown to be generated by these microscopic shear instabilities, which are relevant for particle acceleration, radiation emission and to seed MHD processes at long time-scales.

We report the interplay between In incorporation and strain relaxation kinetics in high-In-content InxGa1-xN (x = 0.3) layers grown by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. For In mole fractions x = 0.13-0.48, best structural and morphological quality is obtained under In excess conditions, at In accumulation limit, and at a growth temperature where InGaN decomposition is active. Under such conditions, in situ and ex situ analysis of the evolution of the crystalline structure with the growth thickness points to an onset of misfit relaxation after the growth of 40 nm, and a gradual relaxation during more than 200 nm which results in an inhomogeneous strain distribution along the growth axis. This process is associated with a compositional pulling effect, i.e. indium incorporation is partially inhibited in presence of compressive strain, resulting in a compositional gradient with increasing In mole fraction towards the surface.

Raman and Brillouin amplification of laser pulses in plasma have been shown to produce picosecond pulses of petawatt power. In previous studies, filamentation of the probe pulse has been identified as the biggest threat to the amplification process, especially for Brillouin amplification, which employs the highest plasma densities. Therefore it has been proposed to perform Brillouin scattering at densities below $n_{cr}/4$ to reduce the influence of filamentation. However, parastic Raman scattering can become a problem at such densities, contrary to densities above $n_{cr}/4$, where it is suppressed. In this paper, we investigate the influence of parasitic Raman scattering on Brillouin amplification at densities below $n_{cr}/4$. This paper reports on the first post-mortem analyses of tiles removed from JET after the first campaigns with the ITER-like Wall (ILW) during 2011-2 [1]. Tiles from the divertor have been analysed by the Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) and Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) and by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) to determine the amount of beryllium deposition and deuterium retention in the tiles exposed to the scrape-off layer. Films 10-20 microns thick were present at the top of Tile 1, but only very thin films (<1 micron) were found in the shadowed areas and on other divertor tiles. The total amount of Be found in the divertor following the ILW campaign was a factor of ~9 less that the material deposited in the 2007-9 carbon campaign, after allowing for the longer operations in 2007-9., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. In this paper we explore the effectiveness of an artificial mini-magnetosphere as a potential radiation shelter for long term human space missions. Our study includes the differences that the plasma environment makes to the efficiency of the shielding from the high energy charged particle component of solar and cosmic rays, which radically alters the power requirements. The incoming electrostatic charges are shielded by fields supported by the self captured environmental plasma of the solar wind, potentially augmented with additional density. The artificial magnetic field generated on board acts as the means of confinement and control. Evidence for similar behaviour of electromagnetic fields and ionised particles in interplanetary space can be gained by the example of the enhanced shielding effectiveness of naturally occurring "mini-magnetospheres" on the moon. The shielding effect of surface magnetic fields of the order of ~100s nanoTesla is sufficient to provide effective shielding from solar proton bombardment that culminate in visible discolouration of the lunar regolith known as "lunar swirls". Supporting evidence comes from theory, laboratory experiments and computer simulations that have been obtained on this topic. Strong shear flow regions found in astrophysical jets are shown to be important dissipation regions, where the shear flow kinetic energy is converted into electric and magnetic field energy via shear instabilities. The emergence of these self-consistent fields make shear flows significant sites for radiation emission and particle acceleration. We focus on electron-scale instabilities, namely the collisionless, unmagnetized Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) and a large-scale dc magnetic field generation mechanism on the electron scales. We show that these processes are important candidates to generate magnetic fields in the presence of strong velocity shears, which may naturally originate in energetic matter outburst of active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray bursters. We show that the KHI is robust to density jumps between shearing flows, thus operating in various scenarios with different density contrasts. Multidimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of the KHI, performed with OSIRIS, reveal the emergence of a strong and large-scale dc magnetic field component, which is not captured by the standard linear fluid theory. This dc component arises from kinetic effects associated with the thermal expansion of electrons of one flow into the other across the shear layer, whilst ions remain unperturbed due to their inertia. The electron expansion forms dc current sheets, which induce a dc magnetic field. Our results indicate that most of the electromagnetic energy developed in the KHI is stored in the dc component, reaching values of equipartition on the order of $10^{-3}$ in the electron time-scale, and persists longer than the proton time-scale. Particle scattering/acceleration in the self generated fields of these shear flow instabilities is also analyzed.

The generation of DC magnetic fields in unmagnetized plasmas with velocity shear is predicted for non relativistic and relativistic scenarios either due to thermal effects or due to the onset of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). A kinetic model describes the growth and the saturation of the DC field. The predictions of the theory are confirmed by multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations, demonstrating the formation of long lived magnetic fields ($t \sim 100s \omega_{pi}^{-1}$) along the full longitudinal extent of the shear layer, with transverse width on the electron length scale ($\sqrt{\gamma_0}c/\omega_{pe}$), reaching magnitudes $eB_{\mathrm{DC}}/m_ec\omega_{pe}\sim \beta_0\sqrt{\gamma_0}$.

Collisionless plasma instabilities are fundamental in magnetic field generation in astrophysical scenarios, but their role has been addressed in scenarios where velocity shear is absent. In this work we show that velocity shears must be considered when studying realistic astrophysical scenarios, since these trigger the collisionless Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). We present the first self-consistent three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of the KHI in conditions relevant for unmagnetized relativistic outflows with velocity shear, such as active galactic nuclei (AGN) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We show the generation of a strong large-scale DC magnetic field, which extends over the entire shear-surface, reaching thicknesses of a few tens of electron skin depths, and persisting on time-scales much longer than the electron time scale. This DC magnetic field is not captured by MHD models since it arises from intrinsically kinetic effects. Our results indicate that the KHI can generate intense magnetic fields yielding equipartition values up to \epsilon_B/\epsilon_p ~ 10^-3 in the electron time-scale. The KHI-induced magnetic fields have a characteristic structure that will lead to a distinct radiation signature, and can seed the turbulent dynamo amplification process. The dynamics of the KHI are relevant for non-thermal radiation modeling and can also have a strong impact on the formation of relativistic shocks in presence of velocity shears.

A Raman study of a back gated bilayer graphene sample is presented. The changes in the Fermi level induced by charge transfer splits the Raman G-band, hardening its higher component and softening the lower one. These two components are associated with the symmetric (S) and anti-symmetric vibration (AS) of the atoms in the two layers, the later one becoming Raman active due to inversion symmetry breaking. The phonon hardening and softening are explained by considering the selective coupling of the S and AS phonons with interband and intraband electron-hole pairs., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The electronic structure of bilayer graphene is investigated from a resonant Raman study using different laser excitation energies. The values of the parameters of the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure model for graphite are measured experimentally and some of them differ significantly from those reported previously for graphite, specially that associated with the difference of the effective mass of electrons and holes. The splitting of the two TO phonon branches in bilayer graphene is also obtained from the experimental data.
