Environmental changes bring challenges to the governance of water resources in the Paulista Macrometropolis. In this context, adaptive governance and the articulation of actors in networks are strategies for coping with this type of situation. This article analyzes water governance in the Paraiba Valley in light of the challenges posed by the 2013-2015 water crisis. Objective is to analyze the network of actors, exploring ways for greater participation of civil society in socioecological adaptation actions. The method used was Social Network Analysis. The conclusion is that there is a mismatch between civil society and the state to negotiate positions. The paper identifies opportunities for enhancing connections between civil society and academia and broadening engagement and cooperation with a focus on adaptive water governance.

O campo ambiental inclui conhecimentos de um grande número de disciplinas, que podem apresentar graus de articulação diferentes para responder aos vários problemas ambientais. Neste trabalho, os conceitos de multi-, inter- e transdisciplinaridade são revisitados, buscando-se explorar os diferentes graus de articulação interdisciplinar encontrados nos estudos ambientais, que podem variar da construção de instrumentos de observação até estudos sobre o desenvolvimento da ideia de crise ambiental, e perpassar instituições como as Convenções para a Proteção da Camada de Ozônio, das Mudanças Climáticas e da Diversidade Biológica. Amazonia is the arena for an ongoing extraordinary transfonnation of nature and society. This process of change can be depicted in many ways and by various disciplines, with emphasis on the biosphere or the atmosphere, as demonstrated by the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment inAmazonia (LBA). However, the human factors behind environmental change should not be neglected. This chapter introduces the section on people and environment in the region proposing an examination of the human dimensions of land use and land cover change from the LBA experience and other perspectives. As a basis for this approach, we provide a brief review on related topics and insights about opportunities for integrative research.
