Abstract Innovation affects a nation’s sovereignty. In this paper, we look at Science and Technology indicators as proxies for Innovation using databases such as WIPO, INPI, Sucupira and Scival, and including patents registered, academic-corporate collaborations, patents citing Brazilian articles (Number of patents and documents) and technical production in Brazilian higher education institutions. We also look at two major previously state-owned companies (Embraer and Petrobras) to see their patenting and citation behaviour compared to other companies worldwide. Brazilian science is a citation basis for patenting in companies and universities worldwide, but Brazil does not use its own publications to support patent proposals. While USP is the major cited university, Unicamp has more patents. Academic-corporate collaboration exists between Brazilian and foreign universities, especially in the US and Europe. The Brazilian companies show low patenting behaviour, but Embraer has a higher impact than Petrobras. As a consequence of the dynamics of science and technology, we suggest that the analyses of the innovation processes could focus on the generation of startups and, in particular, academic spin-offs.

Microbial extracellular polymeric substance networks promote accumulation of Mg-rich clay which in turn serves as a substrate for carbonate precipitation in saline lakes and ponds of Salar de Llamara, according to microstructural observations of microbial mat samples.

The bioconversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol using only carrot bits in water at room temperature and ambient pressure is presented. This reaction led to the bioreduction of furfural with 99% conversion and 99% selectivity to an alcohol. This simple and “fully” green process may represent an alternative to classic hydrogenation processes. Also, without work-up procedure, we demonstrate the aqueous solution can be submitted to microwave irradiation to obtain 4-hydroxy-2-cyclopentenone.

The Puquios of the Salar de Llamara in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile, is a system of small lakes that is characterized by evaporitic mineral deposition and that commonly hosts microbial communities. This region is known for its extreme aridity, solar irradiance, and temperature fluctuations. The Puquios are a highly diverse ecosystem with a variety of sedimentary bottom types. Our previous results identified electrical conductivity (EC) as a first-order environmental control on bottom types. In the present paper, we extend our analysis to examine the effects of additional environmental parameters on bottom types and to consider reasons for the importance of EC as a control of sedimentology. Our results identify microbially produced extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) as a major player in the determination of bottom types. The relative amounts and properties of EPS are determined by EC. EPS, in turn, determines the consistency of bottom types, exchange of bottom substrate with the overlying water column, and mineral precipitation within the substrate. Low-EC ponds in the Puquios system have flocculent to semi-cohesive bottom types, with low-viscosity EPS that allows for high-exchange with the surrounding waters and mineral precipitation of granular gypsum, carbonate, and Mg–Si clay in close association with microbes. Ponds with elevated EC have bottom types that are laminated and highly cohesive with high-viscosity EPS that restricts the exchange between sediments and the surrounding waters; mineral precipitation in these high-EC ponds includes granular to laminated gypsum, carbonate and Mg–Si, which also form in close association with microbes. Bottom types in ponds with EC above the threshold for thriving benthic microbial communities have insufficient EPS accumulations to affect mineral precipitation, and the dominant mineral is gypsum (selenite). The variations in EPS production throughout the Puquios, associated with heterogeneity in environmental conditions, make the Puquios region an ideal location for understanding the controls of sedimentary bottom types in evaporative extreme environments that may be similar to those that existed on early Earth and beyond.

Three phthalocyanine derivatives were synthesized and characterized: one modified with a racemic mixture of 1-(4-bromophenyl)ethanol and two other macrocycles modified with each one of the enantioenriched isomers (R)-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethanol and (S)-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethanol. The compounds were characterized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, UV-Vis absorption, and excitation and emission spectra. Additionally, partition coefficient values and the quantum yield of the generation of oxygen reactive species were determined. Interestingly, the phthalocyanine containing a (R)-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethoxy moiety showed higher quantum yield of reactive oxygen species generation than other compounds under the same conditions. In addition, the obtained fluorescence microscopy and cell viability results have shown that these phthalocyanines have different interactions with mammary MCF-7 cells. Therefore, our results indicate that the photochemical and biological properties of phthalocyanines with chiral ligands should be evaluated separately for each enantiomeric species.

The Juan Fernández and Desventuradas islands are among the few oceanic islands belonging to Chile. They possess a unique mix of tropical, subtropical, and temperate marine species, and although close to continental South America, elements of the biota have greater affinities with the central and south Pacific owing to the Humboldt Current, which creates a strong biogeographic barrier between these islands and the continent. The Juan Fernández Archipelago has ~700 people, with the major industry being the fishery for the endemic lobster, Jasus frontalis. The Desventuradas Islands are uninhabited except for a small Chilean military garrison on San Félix Island. We compared the marine biodiversity of these islands across multiple taxonomic groups. At San Ambrosio Island (SA), in Desventuradas, the laminarian kelp (Eisenia cokeri), which is limited to Desventuradas in Chile, accounted for >50% of the benthic cover at wave exposed areas, while more sheltered sites were dominated by sea urchin barrens. The benthos at Robinson Crusoe Island (RC), in the Juan Fernández Archipelago, comprised a diverse mix of macroalgae and invertebrates, a number of which are endemic to the region. The biomass of commercially targeted fishes was >2 times higher in remote sites around RC compared to sheltered locations closest to port, and overall biomass was 35% higher around SA compared to RC, likely reflecting fishing effects around RC. The number of endemic fish species was extremely high at both islands, with 87.5% of the species surveyed at RC and 72% at SA consisting of regional endemics. Remarkably, endemics accounted for 99% of the numerical abundance of fishes surveyed at RC and 96% at SA, which is the highest assemblage-level endemism known for any individual marine ecosystem on earth. Our results highlight the uniqueness and global significance of these biodiversity hotspots exposed to very different fishing pressures.

Purpose. Flavopiridol is a potent cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor that has preclinical activity in many tumours. This synthetic flavonoid was tested in a phase II nonrandomized, nonblinded multicentre clinical trial to determine its activity and toxicity in patients with previously untreated metastatic or locally advanced soft tissue sarcoma. Methods. A total of 18 patients with histologically confirmed nonoperable soft tissue was treated with flavopiridol administered at a dose of 50 mg/m2 IV over 1 hour daily ×3 days every 3 weeks. Results. Eighteen patients were accrued to the study over a period of 6 months. No objective responses were noted in the seventeen evaluable patients. Eight patients (47%) exhibited stable disease after 2 cycles (median duration of 4.3 months (range 1.4–6.9 months). Kaplan-Meier estimates for 3- and 6-month progression-free survivial rates were 44 percent and 22 percent, respectively. The only grade 3 toxicities were diarrhea (N=2), nausea (N=2), gastritis (N=1), and fatigue (N=1). Ninety-four percent of patients received ≥ 90% of the planned dose intensity, during 55 treatment cycles. Conclusions. Flavopiridol was well tolerated at the dose and schedule used in this study, however, no objective treatment responses were seen and thus our results do not support further exploration of flavopiridol as a monotherapy at this dose and schedule in soft tissue sarcomas.

Presentamos un recuento histórico del autismo en el Perú. Actualmente, desde el paradigma de la neurodiversidad, se utiliza el término «condiciones del espectro autista» para describir alteraciones del neurodesarrollo caracterizadas por dificultades persistentes en la comunicación, la interacción social y comportamientos e intereses restringidos y repetitivos. En Perú, el estudio científico de las enfermedades nerviosas y mentales comenzó alrededor de 1920, y aunque el diagnóstico de «autismo infantil» se planteó en 1959, comenzó a extenderse recién en la década de 1980. Si bien en el siglo XXI se presentaron avances significativos, Perú todavía enfrenta muchos retos en el abordaje del autismo.

Background: COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) has emerged as a relatively common complication. Multiple studies described this relationship in critical patients, however its incidence and outcome in other risk groups such as immunosuppressed patients remains unknown. In this sense, we aimed to evaluate the rates and outcomes of CAPA in hematological patients and according to the different hematological malignances, comparing to invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) in non-COVID-19 ones. Methods: Nationwide, population-based and retrospective observational cohort study including all adult patients with hematological malignancies admitted in Spain since March 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021. The main outcome variable was the diagnosis of IPA during hospitalization in hematological patients with or without COVID-19 at admission. The rate of CAPA compared to IPA in non-COVID-19 patients in each hematological malignancy was also performed, as well as survival curve analysis. Objetivo. El trastorno del espectro autista (TEA) se caracteriza por alteraciones en el desarrollo, dificultades de interacción social y comunicación, y patrones restrictivos y repetitivos de conducta. A pesar de su alta prevalencia, pocos estudios se han realizado en ambientes de rehabilitación. El objetivo del estudio fue describir las características de los niños con TEA atendidos en el Servicio de Rehabilitación Pediátrica del Hospital Rebagliati (SRPHNERM). Materiales y métodos. Estudio descriptivo transversal. Se revisaron las historias clínicas de niños menores de 14 años con diagnóstico previo de TEA atendidos en el SRP-HNERM durante el 2022. Resultados. Se evaluaron a 120 niños con TEA. La mediana de edad fue de cinco años. La mayoría recibía educación regular, pero solo para el 9,8% fue inclusiva. La media de edad de diagnóstico fue de 3,83 años. El 78,4% no tenía certificado de discapacidad y el 77,5% tenía evaluación psicológica incompleta. La mediana del tiempo transcurrido desde las últimas sesiones de terapia física, ocupacional y de lenguaje fue de 3, 8 y 3,5 meses respectivamente. Conclusión. La media de edad de diagnóstico de TEA fue mayor de tres años y más del 75% de los pacientes no contaban con un certificado de discapacidad ni con una evaluación psicológica completa. La mediana del tiempo desde las últimas sesiones de terapias de rehabilitación fue de tres meses o más. Estos hallazgos resaltan la necesidad de potenciar el diagnóstico temprano, la educación inclusiva y la evaluación y posterior certificación de la discapacidad, así como de establecer intervenciones más oportunas.

The genetic basis of severe COVID-19 has been thoroughly studied, and many genetic risk factors shared between populations have been identified. However, reduced sample sizes from non-European groups have limited the discovery of population-specific common risk loci. In this second study nested in the SCOURGE consortium, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for COVID-19 hospitalization in admixed Americans, comprising a total of 4702 hospitalized cases recruited by SCOURGE and seven other participating studies in the COVID-19 Host Genetic Initiative. We identified four genome-wide significant associations, two of which constitute novel loci and were first discovered in Latin American populations (BAZ2B and DDIAS). A trans-ethnic meta-analysis revealed another novel cross-population risk locus in CREBBP. Finally, we assessed the performance of a cross-ancestry polygenic risk score in the SCOURGE admixed American cohort. This study constitutes the largest GWAS for COVID-19 hospitalization in admixed Latin Americans conducted to date. This allowed to reveal novel risk loci and emphasize the need of considering the diversity of populations in genomic research.

Background: Systematic reviews (SRs) worldwide suffer from methodological deficiencies, potentially biasing intervention decisions, and Peruvian SRs are no exception. Evaluating SRs led by Peruvian researchers is a crucial step to enhance quality and transparency in decision-making and to identify topics where SRs are either scarce or prioritized for research. Objective: To describe the characteristics and assess the methodological quality of SRs with Peruvian first authors. Methods: We conducted a scoping review within the Scopus database on January 5, 2023. We aimed to identify published SRs of interventions in which the first author had a Peruvian affiliation, published between 2013 and 2022. We evaluated the methodological quality of these SRs using the AMSTAR 2 tool. We assessed the factors associated with the AMSTAR 2 score using adjusted mean differences (aMD), including their 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI). Results: We identified 95 eligible SRs, with a clear upward trend. SRs were primarily published in Q1 (43.2 %) and Q2 (23.2 %) journals, predominantly affiliated with institutions in Lima (90.5 %). Areas like infectious diseases (20.0 %) and dentistry (18.9 %) were most frequent. AMSTAR 2 assessments highlighted deficiencies, with few SRs reporting prior protocols (37.9 %), comprehensive search strategies (23.2 %), explanations for excluded studies (20.0 %), adequate descriptions of included studies (38.3 %), or funding sources (19.1 %). Notably, SRs in Q4 journals (aMD: −19.7, 95 % CI: −33.8 to −5.5) and those on surgical interventions (aMD: −22.6, 95 % CI: −34.7 to −10.4) had lower AMSTAR 2 scores. Conclusions: Although Peruvian-led SRs are increasingly being published, critical deficiencies are common, especially in reporting protocols, search strategies, study descriptions, and funding sources. Addressing these gaps is pivotal for enhancing the credibility and utility of these SRs in informing decision-making.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. However, an accurate diagnosis contributes to timely treatment, reducing its adverse consequences. The aim of this research was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the molecular test Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Xpert Ultra) for the diagnosis of pulmonary and extrapulmonary TB compared to Löwenstein-Jensen culture. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of diagnostic accuracy. We included samples from patients who attended a Peruvian laboratory between 2011 and 2022. The index test was the Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert Ultra and the reference standard was Löwenstein-Jensen solid culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We calculated sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative likelihood ratios. Results: We evaluated 1023 samples, of which 737 were pulmonary samples, 197 tested positive for the Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert Ultra tests; and 151 tested positive for culture. The Xpert (MTB/RIF and Ultra) showed a joint sensitivity and specificity of: 97 % (95%CI: 93–99) and 93 % (95%CI: 91–95) in pulmonary samples, 100 % (95%CI: 29.2–100) and 98.3 % (95%CI: 94.1–99.8) in cerebrospinal fluid, 66.7 % (95%CI: 22.3–95.7) and 96.8 % (95%CI: 91–99.3) in pleural fluid, 100 % (95%CI: 15.8–100) and 94.3 % (95%CI: 80.8–99.3) in urine. For the detection of pulmonary TB, the Xpert MTB/RIF had a sensitivity and specificity of 97.1 % (95%CI: 89.9–99.6) and 95.6 % (95%CI: 92.9–97.5) and the Xpert Ultra of 97 % (95%CI: 88.5–99.6) 89.5 % (95%CI: 84.9–93.1) respectively. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the Xpert MTB/RIF and the Xpert Ultra are tests with high diagnostic performance for the detection of pulmonary TB and adequate specificity in pulmonary, cerebrospinal fluid, pleural, and urine samples. However, the results for other samples were imprecise.

Resumo A pandemia de Covid 19 aprofundou dinâmicas de vulnerabilidade que há muito já eram sentidas por certos agrupamentos sociais. Nesse contexto, a solidez das redes de suporte material e psíquico frequentemente emerge como aquilo que amortece aqueles que foram os efeitos mais corrosivos da pandemia. Neste artigo, trago reflexões sobre esse tema a partir de uma etnografia feita nos ambientes virtuais em que uma importante liderança dos motoristas de aplicativo em Pernambuco se faz presente. Além de identificar algumas das arbitrariedades sofridas pelo grupo de trabalhadores que esse interlocutor representa (publicizadas em seu Instagram), também mapeio como os próprios motoristas se associam para lidar com tais vulnerabilidades. Por fim, demonstro que foi o meu próprio sofrimento psíquico (aprofundado pelo isolamento social da pandemia) que me fez procurar um motorista engajado com a defesa dessa categoria de trabalhadores.
