Abstract

The $^{246}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) and $^{248}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) cross-sections have been measured at the Experimental Area 2 (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN with three C$_6$D$_6$ detectors. This measurement is part of a collective effort to improve the capture cross-section data for Minor Actinides (MAs), which are required to estimate the production and transmutation rates of these isotopes in light water reactors and innovative reactor systems. In particular, the neutron capture in $^{246}$Cm and $^{248}$Cm open the path for the formation of other Cm isotopes and heavier elements such as Bk and Cf and the knowledge of (n,$\gamma$) cross-sections of these Cm isotopes plays an important role in the transport, transmutation and storage of the spent nuclear fuel. The reactions $^{246}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) and $^{248}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) have been the two first capture measurements analyzed at n_TOF EAR2. Until this experiment and two recent measurements performed at J-PARC, there was only one set of data of the capture cross-sections of $^{246}$Cm and $^{248}$Cm, that was obtained in 1969 in an underground nuclear explosion experiment. In the measurement at n_TOF a total of 13 resonances of $^{246}$Cm between 4 and 400 eV and 5 of $^{248}$Cm between 7 and 100 eV have been identified and fitted. The radiative kernels obtained for $^{246}$Cm are compatible with JENDL-5, but some of them are not with JENDL-4, which has been adopted by JEFF-3.3 and ENDF/B-VIII.0. The radiative kernels obtained for the first three $^{248}$Cm resonances are compatible with JENDL-5, however, the other two are not compatible with any other evaluation and are 20% and 60% larger than JENDL-5.

Abstract

Background:The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Reduce the $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section uncertainty. Method: The $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN with a BaF$_{2}$ Total Absorption Calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature has been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries.

Abstract

The challenge for any nuclear data evaluation project is to periodically release a revised, fully consistent and complete library, with all needed data and covariances, and ensure that it is robust and reliable for a variety of applications. Within an evaluation effort, benchmarking activities play an important role in validating proposed libraries. The Joint Evaluated Fission and Fusion (JEFF) Project aims to provide such a nuclear data library, and thus, requires a coherent and efficient benchmarking process. The aim of this paper is to present the activities carried out by the new JEFF Benchmarking and Validation Working Group, and to describe the role of the NEA Data Bank in this context. The paper will also review the status of preliminary benchmarking for the next JEFF-3.3 candidate cross-section files.

Abstract

The n_TOF neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN is used for high quality nuclear data measurements from thermal energy up to hundreds of MeV. In line with the CERN open data policy, the n_TOF Collaboration takes actions to preserve its unique data, facilitate access to them in standardised format, and allow their re-use by a wide community in the fields of nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and various nuclear technologies. The present contribution briefly describes the n_TOF outcomes, as well as the status of dissemination and preservation of n_TOF final data in the international EXFOR library.

Abstract

The 238U fission cross section is an international standard beyond 2 MeV where the fission plateau starts. However, due to its importance in fission reactors, this cross-section should be very accurately known also in the threshold region below 2 MeV. The 238U fission cross section has been measured relative to the 235U fission cross section at CERN – n_TOF with different detection systems. These datasets have been collected and suitably combined to increase the counting statistics in the threshold region from about 300 keV up to 3 MeV. The results are compared with other experimental data, evaluated libraries, and the IAEA standards.

Abstract

The joint evaluated fission and fusion nuclear data library 3.3 is described. New evaluations for neutron-induced interactions with the major actinides 235U, 238U and 239Pu, on 241Am and 23Na, 59Ni, Cr, Cu, Zr, Cd, Hf, W, Au, Pb and Bi are presented. It includes new fission yields, prompt fission neutron spectra and average number of neutrons per fission. In addition, new data for radioactive decay, thermal neutron scattering, gamma-ray emission, neutron activation, delayed neutrons and displacement damage are presented. JEFF-3.3 was complemented by files from the TENDL project. The libraries for photon, proton, deuteron, triton, helion and alpha-particle induced reactions are from TENDL-2017. The demands for uncertainty quantification in modeling led to many new covariance data for the evaluations. A comparison between results from model calculations using the JEFF-3.3 library and those from benchmark experiments for criticality, delayed neutron yields, shielding and decay heat, reveals that JEFF-3.3 performes very well for a wide range of nuclear technology applications, in particular nuclear energy.

Abstract

In the last few years, and within the framework of different European projects, KENO-VI code from SCALE system has been employed to perform detailed continuous-energy Monte Carlo transport calculations for advanced fast reactors. The core characterization of both the sodium-cooled ASTRID and the lead-cooled ALFRED reactors was performed during the FP7 cross-cutting ESNII+ project; more recently, core calculations for the sodium-cooled Superphénix reactor and the improved European Sodium Fast Reactor design were performed within the HORIZON2020 ESFR-SMART project. In all cases, the effective multiplication factor predicted by KENO-VI was systematically higher (around 400-500 pcm) than the values computed by MCNP and Serpent Monte Carlo codes, using the same nuclear data library. In order to provide insight into the origin of the observed discrepancies, a simplified 2D MOX-fueled SFR pin-cell benchmark has been launched. The multiplication factor, as well as 1-group and VITAMINJ 175-group cross-sections computed by KENO-VI, Serpent and MCNP codes employing ENDF/B-VII.1 data library, have been compared. Significant differences between KENO-VI and the other codes have been found in the unresolved resonance regions of 239Pu and 241Pu capture and production cross sections, while negligible differences appeared outside those energy ranges. On the other hand, calculations without using probability tables have shown very good agreement. Quantita-tive comparison is presented and analyzed, along with a discussion of the impact of the probability-table treatment in the three codes for MOX-fueled systems with typical SFR spectrum.

According to Article III.A.6 of the IAEA Statute, the safety standards establish “standards of safety for protection of health and minimization of danger to life and property”. The safety standards include the Safety Fundamentals, Safety Requirements and Safety Guides. These standards are written primarily in a regulatory style, and are binding on the IAEA for its own programmes. The principal users are the regulatory bodies in Member States and other national authorities. The IAEA Nuclear Energy Series comprises reports designed to encourage and assist R&D on, and application of, nuclear energy for peaceful uses. This includes practical examples to be used by owners and operators of utilities in Member States, implementing organizations, academia, and government officials, among others. This information is presented in guides, reports on technology status and advances, and best practices for peaceful uses of nuclear energy based on inputs from international experts. The IAEA Nuclear Energy Series complements the IAEA Safety Standards Series. The International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) was established in 2000 to help to ensure that nuclear energy is available to contribute to meeting the energy needs of the 21st century in a sustainable manner. INPRO focuses on key issues of global sustainability of nuclear energy with the aim of assisting in the development of long term nuclear energy strategies. INPRO Task 1, on global scenarios, analyses regional and global nuclear energy scenarios to achieve a global vision of how nuclear energy could be sustainable within the present century. Several collaborative projects were established by INPRO members within Task 1. The INPRO collaborative project Global Architecture of Innovative Nuclear Energy Systems Based on Thermal and Fast Reactors Including a Closed Fuel Cycle (GAINS) developed a framework for dynamic assessment of current and future nuclear energy systems with regard to sustainability. This publication presents the results of the follow-up collaborative project Synergistic Nuclear Energy Regional Group Interactions Evaluated for Sustainability (SYNERGIES). This collaborative project was jointly implemented in 2012–2015 by Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, France, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, the Russian Federation, Spain, Ukraine, the United States of America, Viet Nam and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency as participants or observers. The INPRO collaborative project SYNERGIES applied and amended the analytical framework developed in GAINS to model more specifically the various forms of collaboration among countries, assess benefits and issues relevant for collaboration, and identify those collaborative scenarios and architectures that ensure a ‘win– win’ strategy for both suppliers and users of peaceful nuclear energy technologies. The results of the study have increased understanding of how best to enhance sustainability of nuclear energy systems in the 21st century. The IAEA officers responsible for this publication were V. Kuznetsov and G. Fesenko of the Division of Nuclear Power.

Abstract

The n-TOF neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN is used for high quality nuclear data measurements from thermal energy up to hundreds of MeV. In line with the CERN open data policy, the n-TOF Collaboration takes actions to preserve its unique data, facilitate access to them in standardised format, and allow their re-use by a wide community in the fields of nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and various nuclear technologies. The present contribution briefly describes the n-TOF outcomes, as well as the status of dissemination and preservation of n-TOF final data in the international EXFOR library. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017.

Abstract

International audience; Under the framework of the Nuclear Energy Agency's Expert Group on Advanced Fuel Cycle Scenarios (NEA/AFCS), a benchmark on dose rate calculations for Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) Spent Fuel Assembly is currently underway. This multinational effort was first proposed by CEA (French Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives) and DOE (U.S. Department of Energy), after having conducted their own bilateral comparative study on dose rate calculations for typical UOX and MOX spent fuel assemblies [1]. The goals of this benchmark are to expand on that work by including more international participants, to verify the dose rate results and potentially include validation efforts depending on the availability of appropriate experimental data.

Abstract

[ES] La sostenibilidad de la energía nuclear ha motivado el desarrollo de reactores de Generación IV y sistemas nucleares avanzados que son altamente seguros, competitivos económicamente, que extienden la vida de los recursos naturales, minimizan la producción de residuos y obedecen a criterios muy estrictos de no proliferación. La implantación de los sistemas avanzados y de Gen IV requiere aún importantes esfuerzos de I+D materializados en programas coordinados internacionalmente. En España, dicha I+D es realizada a nivel púbolico por el CIEMAT, la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid y la Universitat Politècnica de València y, a nivel privado, por la potente indsutria nuclear española. Las actividades de I+D están siendo financiadas principalmente por ENRES, EURATOM y el Ministerio de economía, Industria y Competitividad y pueden agruparse en cuatro grandes áreas: diseño de reactores, seguridad, materiales y ciclos de combustible., [EN] Ths sustainability of nuclear energyu has driven the developm,ent of the Generation IV (Gen IV) reactors and advanced nuclear systems that are extremely safe, economically competitive, extend the use of resources, minimise the waste and obey strict non-proliferation requierementes. In Spain, this R&D is carried out in the public sector by CIEMAT, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and Universitat Politècnica de València and also by the solid Spanish nuclear industry. The activities are being gunded by ENRESA, EURATOM and ths Spanish Ministry of Economý, Industry and Competitiveness R&D programs and can be grouped in four large areas: reactor design, safety, materials and fuel cycles.

Within the framework of Work Package 10 of the EC FP7 CHANDA project, nuclear data of importance for the operation of MYRRHA, a lead-bismuth cooled accelerator driven reactor under development at SCK•CEN (BE), were studied. Abstract

International audience; Nuclear systems, composed of reactors and fuel cycle facilities, are complex and in constant evolution. Fuel cycle scenario studies aim at evaluating the consequences of decisions taken in the near term on the eventual outcomes of a chosen fuel cycle.Scenario studies require a large amount of data and hypotheses, such as the energy demand and its evolution or the performances and characteristics of existing and future technologies. Each hypothesis, represented by a parameter, is a potential source of uncertainty that can impact the scenario outcomes. The Nuclear Energy Agency's Expert Group on Advanced Fuel Cycle Scenarios (NEA/AFCS) recently completed an activity that used sensitivity studies to evaluate the impact of uncertainty of the primary scenario input parameters on scenario results.At the beginning of the study, a base case scenario was specified and evaluated. It considers a PWR UOX reactor fleet using low enriched uranium oxide fuel and its gradual replacement by a sodium fast reactor (SFR) fleet using uranium/plutonium mixed oxide fuel. Each member of the group evaluated this scenario with its own scenario code (COSI, COSAC, FAMILY, SITON, TR_EVOL or VISION). It is noteworthy that the different codes show a good consistency in the results and that the differences have been investigated and documented in order to ensure a strong basis for comparison in the sensitivity study.Then, 17 key input parameters and their range of variation as well as 22 scenario outputs were identified and sensitivity analyses were conducted. The key parameters were chosen amongst the general assumptions on the scenario (energy demand, introduction date of fast reactor), reactors and facilities characteristics (burn-ups, losses at reprocessing) and some minor actinides recycling parameters. As far as possible, each parameter was varied independently from the others. This sensitivity study shows the relative impact of each parameter on each output metric. In order to compare the large amount of results, two methods of summarization were adopted, as described in the paper. These comparisons have shown that some parameters, such as the energetic production or the introduction date of fast reactors, have a strong impact on the results whereas others, like the UOX fabrication time, have almost no impact on the studied scenario.

Abstract

Nuclear data of importance to the operation of MYRRHA, a research infrastructure supporting the development of Generation-IV reactors, were identified by sensitivity analysis. The data recommended in the main nuclear data libraries (i.e. JEFF, JENDL, ENDF/B, and TENDL) were compared and validated against the available experimental data reported in the literature and results of recent measurements. Recommendations for new experiments to solve inconsistencies between recommended and experimental data were specified. In addition, an assessment was made of the discrepancies and the means of improvement of nuclear data libraries for design, safety assessment and operation of new nuclear reactor systems such as MYRRHA., JRC.G.2-Standards for Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguard

Abstract

The neutron-induced fission cross section of Np237 was experimentally determined at the high-resolution and high-intensity facility n_TOF, at CERN, in the energy range 100 keV to 9 MeV, using the U235(n,f) and U238(n,f) cross section standards below and above 2 MeV, respectively. A fast ionization chamber was used in order to detect the fission fragments from the reactions and the targets were characterized as far as their mass and homogeneity are concerned by means of α spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy respectively. Theoretical calculations within the Hauser-Feshbach formalism have been performed, employing the empire code, and the model parameters were tuned in order to successfully reproduce the experimental fission cross-sectional data and simultaneously all the competing reaction channels.

International audience; A benchmark analysis was launched within the Work Package on Core Safety of the EU FP7 cross-cutting project supporting the European Sustainable Industrial Initiative (ESNII), named ESNII+, aimed at providing a quantitative estimation of the uncertainties affecting the calculation of both core static neutronic parameters and safety coefficients of a Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) low-void-effect core similar to the one considered for the Advanced Sodium Technological Reactor for Industrial Demonstration (ASTRID). Established deterministic and stochastic neutronic codes, as well as different nuclear data libraries, were employed by eight European organizations to perform a complete core characterization, with the ultimate goal to achieve consensus on computational methods and associated databases to be employed for advanced-design SFRs safety analyses. The comparison of the results obtained by the participating institutions provided quantitative information about capabilities and limitations of the different approaches, and about library effects, by highlighting the sensitivity of safety parameters to both computational techniques and nuclear data. Selected results of the first phase of the benchmark are presented and analyzed, along with a discussion of the planned R&D activities needed to improve the present benchmark status

Abstract

The 238U to 23577 U fission cross section ratio has been determined at n_TOF up to 1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four data sets has been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3-4%. The data collected at n_TOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. Good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++/Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n_TOF results may help solving a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental datasets available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to 1 GeV., JRC.D.4-Standards for Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards

Abstract

Background: The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Improvement of the 243Am(n,γ ) cross section uncertainty. Method: The 243Am(n,γ ) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN with a BaF2 total absorption calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The 243Am(n,γ ) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature have been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the 243Am(n,γ ) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries., JRC.D.4-Standards for Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards
