1. Rocky planet formation in compact disks around M dwarfs

Abstract

Rocky planets in compact configurations are the most common ones around M dwarfs. Many disks around very low mass stars (between 0.1 and 0.5 M$_\odot$) are rather compact and small (without observable substructures and radius less than 20 au), which favours the idea of an efficient radial drift that could enhance planet formation in compact orbits. We aim to investigate the potential formation paths of the observed close-in rocky exoplanet population around M dwarfs, assuming that planet formation could take place in compact disks with an efficient dust radial drift. We developed N-body simulations that include a sample of embryos growing by pebble accretion exposed to planet-disk interactions, star-planet tidal interactions and general relativistic corrections. For a star of 0.1 M$_\odot$ we considered different gas disk viscosity and initial embryo distributions. We also explore planet formation by pebble accretion around stars of 0.3 and 0.5 M$_\odot$. Lastly, for each stellar mass, we run simulations that include a sample of embryos growing by planetesimal accretion. Our main result is that the sample of simulated planets that grow by pebble accretion in a gas disk with low viscosity ($\alpha=10^{-4}$) can reproduce the close-in low-mass exoplanet population around M dwarfs in terms of multiplicity, masses and semi-major axis. Furthermore, we found that a gas disk with high viscosity ($\alpha=10^{-3}$) can not reproduce the observed planet masses. Also, we show that planetesimal accretion favours the formation of smaller planets than the ones formed by pebble accretion. Rocky planet formation around M dwarfs can take place in compact and small dust disks driven by an efficient radial drift in a gas disk with low viscosity. Abstract

We present archive Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 6 observations of the $^{13}$CO (J=2-1) and $^{12}$CO (J=2-1) molecular line emission of the protostellar system associated with HH 30. The $^{13}$CO molecular line shows the accretion disk while the molecular outflow is traced by the emission of the $^{12}$CO molecular line. We estimated a dynamical mass for the central object of $0.45\pm0.14$ M$_\odot$, and a mass for the molecular outflow of $1.83\pm0.19\times10^{-4}$ M$_\odot$. The molecular outflow presents an internal cavity as well as multiple outflowing shell structures. We distinguish three different shells with constant expansion ($\sim4-6$ km s$^{-1}$) and possible rotation signatures ($\leq0.5$ km s$^{-1}$). We find that the shells can be explained by magnetocentrifugal disk winds with launching radii $R_\mathrm{launch}\lesssim4$ au and a small magnetic lever arm $\lambda\sim1.6-1.9$. The multiple shell structure may be the result of episodic ejections of the material from the accretion disk associated with three different epochs with dynamical ages of $497\pm15$ yr, $310\pm9$ yr, and $262\pm11$ yr for the first, second, and third shells, respectively. The outermost shell was ejected $187\pm17$ yr before the medium shell, while the medium shell was launched $48\pm14$ yr before the innermost shell. Our estimations of the linear and angular momentum rates of the outflow as well as the accretion luminosity are consistent with the expected values if the outflow of HH 30 is produced by a wide-angle disk wind.

Abstract

Understanding the formation of substructures in protoplanetary disks is vital for gaining insights into dust growth and the process of planet formation. Studying these substructures in highly embedded Class 0 objects using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), however, poses significant challenges. Nonetheless, it is imperative to do so to unravel the mechanisms and timing behind the formation of these substructures. In this study, we present high-resolution ALMA data at Bands 6 and 4 of the NGC1333 IRAS4A Class 0 protobinary system. This system consists of two components, A1 and A2, separated by 1.8" and located in the Perseus molecular cloud at $\sim$293 pc distance. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the dust properties and formation of substructures in the early stages, we conducted a multi-wavelength analysis of IRAS4A1. Additionally, we sought to address whether the lack of observed substructures in very young disks, could be attributed to factors such as high degrees of disk flaring and large scale heights. To explore this phenomenon, we employed radiative transfer models using RADMC-3D. Our multi-wavelength analysis of A1 discovered characteristics such as high dust surface density, substantial dust mass within the disk, and elevated dust temperatures. These findings suggest the presence of large dust grains compared to the ones in the interstellar medium (ISM), greater than 100 microns in size within the region. Furthermore, while there's no direct detection of any substructure, our models indicate that some, such as a small gap, must be present. In summary, this result implies that disk substructures may be masked or obscured by a large scale height in combination with a high degree of flaring in Class 0 disks. Abstract

Recent work has demonstrated that skilful hybrid statistical–dynamical forecasts of heavy rainfall events in Southeast Asia can be made by combining model forecasts of the phases and amplitudes of Kelvin, Rossby, and westward‐moving Rossby gravity waves with climatological rainfall statistics conditioned on these waves. This study explores the sensitivity of this hybrid forecast to its parameter choices and compares its skill in forecasting extreme rainfall events in the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam to that of the Met Office Global and Regional Ensemble Prediction System (MOGREPS). The hybrid forecast is found to outperform both the global and convection‐permitting ensemble in some regions when forecasting the most extreme events; however, for less extreme events, the ensemble is found more skilful. A weighted blend of the MOGREPS forecasts and the hybrid forecast was found to have the highest skill of all for almost all definitions of extreme event and in most regions. To quantify the influence of errors in the predicted wave state on the skill of the hybrid forecast, the skill of a hypothetical best‐case forecast was also calculated using reanalysis data to specify the wave amplitudes and phases. This best‐case forecast indicates that errors in the forecasts of all wave types reduce the skill of hybrid forecast; however, the reduction in skill is largest for Kelvin waves. The skill in convection‐permitting models is greater than for global models in the regions where Kelvin waves dominate, but the added value of limited‐area high‐resolution forecasts is hampered by the poor representation of Kelvin waves in the parent global model. Renaturing urban environments is a transformative pathway for urban sustainability that can be leveraged for collaborative research and planning to reverse long trends of ecosystem degradation. People-nature connections need to be reinforced to enable the successful uptake and upscale of urban renaturing practices. Improving people's understanding, perception, and emotions towards nature is therefore key. In this paper, we discuss how human knowledge and values of nature can be enabled through urban renaturing. Besides, we discuss the required transitions in urban planning processes to support urban renaturing practices.

Abstract

This study is focus on determine the concentration of macro and micro cationicnutrients: K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn in plant tissue samples banana, palm,roses, by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).The experimental part of this research was developed in the laboratories of theDepartment of Soil and Water Management (DMSA) in the Santa Catalina Ex-perimental Station of INIAP, which use atomic absorption technique for theanalysis of elements in leaf samples; this technique has limitations in terms oflimits of detection, matrix effects, linear range, and number of elements thatcan be analyzed simultaneously. However, emission spectroscopy with induc-tively coupled plasma is a technique that is at the forefront as an analytical toolfor multielement determination in leaf tissues. For this reason the technique ICP-OES is optimized, for analysis of macro and micro cationic nutrients insamples of plant tissue, since the use of this equipment will increase the oper-ational capacity of the laboratory. Analyses were carried out on samples of planttissue of banana, palm and roses, which are used as reference material in rou-tine analysis of plant samples carried out in DMSA laboratories; Apple Leaves1515 was used as a Certified Reference Material. Samples and standard refer-ence material subjected to wet digestion and then quantify the analytes understudy through the techniques of AA and ICP-OES. A comparative study was per-formed of the variables: accuracy, precision, linearity, limits of detection andquantification, in which it was determined there are significant differences be-tween the techniques used. Statistical analysis showed that there were highlysignificant differences in the content of macro and micronutrients in the tissuesanalyzed. In the case of magnesium in palm leaf tissue, the percentages were0.36 and 0.52%, obtained by AA and ICP respectively, and within the group ofmicronutrients, iron content in palm leaf tissue with values of 182.48 and122.33 mg/L. However, in the case of the samples of leaf tissue of banana, palmand roses, the values obtained by ICP-OES and AA in potassium analysis,showed that the difference is statistically significant.

Se determinó la concentración de macro y micronutrientes catiónicos: K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu. Fe y Mn, en muestras de tejido vegetal de banano, palma y rosas, por espectroscopia de emisión por acoplamiento de plasma inductivo y detección óptica (ICP-OES). La parte experimental se desarrolló en los laboratorios del Departamento de Manejo de Suelos y Aguas (DMSA) de la Estación Experimental Santa Catalina del INIAP, los cuales utilizan la técnica de Absorción Atómica para el análisis de elementos en muestras foliares; dicha técnica presenta limitaciones en cuanto a límites de detección, efectos de matriz, rango lineal y número de elementos que pueden ser analizados en forma simultánea. En cambio, la espectroscopia de emisión con plasma acoplado inductivamente, es una técnica que está a la vanguardia como herramienta analítica para la determinación multielemental en tejidos foliares. Por esta razón se optimizó la técnica de ICP-OES, para el análisis de macro y micronutrientes catiónicos en muestras de tejido vegetal, ya que con el uso de este equipo se incrementará la capacidad operativa del laboratorio. Los análisis se realizaron con muestras de tejido vegetal de banano, palma y rosas, que se utilizan como material de referencia para los análisis de rutina de muestras vegetales que se realizan en los laboratorios del DMSA; se utilizó como Material de Referencia Certificado (MRC) el Standard Reference Material 1515, Apple Leaves. Las muestras y el material certificado se sometieron a digestión húmeda para luego cuantificar los analitos en estudio por medio de las técnicas de AA e ICP-OES. Se realizó un estudio comparativo de las variables: exactitud, precisión, linealidad, límites de detección y cuantificación en el cual se determinó que existen diferencias significativas entre las técnicas empleadas. El análisis estadístico demostró que existen diferencias altamente significativas en el contenido de macro y micronutrientes en los tejidos analizados, como sucede en el caso del magnesio en tejido foliar de palma, cuyos porcentajes fueron de 0,36 y 0,52%, obtenidos mediante AA e ICP respectivamente y dentro del grupo de los micronutrientes, el contenido de hierro en tejido foliar de palma con valores de 182,48 y 122,33 mg/L. Sin embargo, en el caso de las muestras de tejido foliar de banano, palma y rosas, los valores obtenidos mediante AA e ICP, en el análisis de potasio, demostraron que estadísticamente la diferencia es significativa.

El desarrollo del trabajo que se expone a continuación, supuso la recolección de algunos de los principales problemas y reflexiones jurídicas, que, en torno al derecho a la libertad de expresión, se han ido perfeccionando en la jurisprudencia constitucional con el transcurso de los años. Se han recogido de igual manera, varios criterios y estándares criterios desarrollados por la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos [Corte IDH], así como algunas disposiciones legales contenidas en la normatividad internacional. Bajo la perspectiva de tales criterios, se analizaron aspectos relativos a tres resoluciones que - con motivo de regular la libertad de expresión - se establecieron en Ecuador, la posibilidad de que éste pueda ser considerado como titular del derecho al honor, la protección de la libertad de expresión ante un contexto electoral, de las notas periodísticas o de información, y aún el derecho de opinión como una extensión de dicho derecho. Finalmente, también se realizaron algunas puntualizaciones en torno a la posibilidad de establecer responsabilidades ulteriores; todo con base principalmente en desarrollo jurisprudencial de la Corte Constitucional y la misma Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos [Corte IDH].

29. Diet of the Rufous-legged Owl (Strix rufipes) at the northern limit of its distribution in Chile

Abstract

We quantified the diet of the Rufous-legged Owl (Strix rufipes) by analysing 63 pellets collected during 2003 and 2005 in a small coastal sclerophyllous forest stand at the northern limit of its distribution in Chile (31-32° S). The diet comprised small mammals (frequency = 57.8%, biomass = 99.3%), crustaceans (frequency = 1.7%, biomass = 0.1%), and insects (frequency = 40.5%, biomass = 0.6%). We identified at least 10 small mammal species in these pellets of which Bennett's chinchilla rat (Abrocoma bennetti; frequency = 12.4%) and long-tailed pygmy rice rat (Oligoryzomys longicaudatus; frequency = 7.4%) were the most frequently occurring mammalian prey remains. Terrestrial small mammals accounted for 21.5% by frequency of all individuals and 49.1% of the total biomass; scansorial/arboreal small mammals accounted for only 13.2% of all individual prey and 17.2% of total biomass., Forest fragmentation and land-use patterns have modified and dramatically reduced the availability and quality of natural habitats in Chile (Fuentes 1994). 34. Upstream cyclone influence on the predictability of block onsets over the Euro-Atlantic region

Abstract

Atmospheric blocking has been shown to be a phenomenon that models struggle to predict accurately, particularly the onset of a blocked state following a more zonal flow. This struggle is, in part, due to the lack of a complete dynamical theory for block onset and maintenance. Here, we evaluate the impact cyclone representation had on the forecast of block onset in two case studies from the North Atlantic Waveguide and Downstream Impact Experiment field campaign and the 20 most unpredictable block onsets over the Euro-Atlantic region in medium-range forecasts from the ECMWF. The six-day forecast of block onset in the case studies is sensitive to changes in the forecast location and intensity of upstream cyclones (one cyclone for one case and two for the other case) in the days preceding the onset. Ensemble sensitivity analysis reveals that this is often the case in unpredictable block onset cases: a one-standard deviation change in 1000-hPa geopotential height near an upstream cyclone, or 320-K potential vorticity near the tropopause, two or three days prior to block onset is associated with more than a 10% change in block area on the analyzed onset day in 17 of the 20 onset cases. These results imply that improvement in the forecasts of upstream cyclone location and intensity may help improve block onset forecasts.

35. A route to systematic error in forecasts of Rossby waves

Recent work has shown that both the amplitude of upper level Rossby waves and the tropopause sharpness decrease with forecast lead time for several days in some operational weather forecast systems. In this contribution the evolution of error growth in a case study of this forecast error type is diagnosed through analysis of operational forecasts and hindcast simulations. Potential vorticity (PV) on the 320K isentropic surface is used to diagnose Rossby waves. The Rossby wave forecast error in the operational ECMWF high resolution forecast is shown to be associated with errors in the forecast of a warm conveyor belt (WCB) through trajectory analysis and an error metric for WCB outflows. The WCB forecast error is characterised by an overestimation of WCB amplitude a location of the WCB outflow regions that is too far to the southeast and a resulting underestimation of the magnitude of the negative PV anomaly in the outflow. Essentially the same forecast error development also occurred in all members of theECMWFEnsemble Prediction System and the MetOffice MOGREPS 15 suggesting that in this case model error made an important contribution to the development of forecast error in addition to initial condition error. Exploiting this forecast error robustness a comparison was performed between the realised flow evolution proxied by a sequence of short range simulations and a contemporaneous forecast. Both the proxy to the realised flow and the contemporaneous forecast were produced with the Met Office Unified Model enhanced with tracers of diabatic processes modifying potential temperature and PV. Clear differences between proxy and forecast were found in the way potential temperature and PV are modified in the WCB. These results demonstrate that differences in potential temperature and PV modification in the WCB can be responsible for forecast errors in Rossby waves.

Abstract

To achieve a better understanding of the life histories of Chilean owls and to generate a useful source of information for future studies, we undertook an exhaustive review of all available information relating to their taxonomy, natural history, ecology, genetic and conservation biology. Studying these topics we gathered information on morphology, morphometrics, distribution, abundance, habitat, reproduction, longevity, behaviour, diet, feeding ecology, population ecology, community ecology, functional ecology, ecophysiology, endemism, conservation status, threats, human perception, legislation, education and outreach, physical rehabilitation, and habitat management. During our review, we rediscovered and retrieved naturalist’s observations that had remained totally unknown to contemporary ornithologists. Some of the challenges that must be addressed to achieve a clearer understanding of the biology of Chilean owls and strengthen conservation strategies are (i) to definitively determine the validity of Bubo magellanicus as a separate species and establish the true extent of its distributional hiatus; (ii) to determine the geographic boundaries for Glaucidium nana and G. peruanum; (iii) to detect the ocurrence of population size variations and to identify possible causal factors; (iv) to identify variables that promote the use of, and preference for, habitats; (v) to ascertain, in detail, their reproductive characteristics, home ranges, and dynamic movements; (vi) to assess their diets in poorly studied ecosystems; (vii) to determine their relevance in local food webs and roles in ecosystems; (viii) to evaluate the genetic structure of owls in highly fragmented landscape; and (ix) to promote much more education about their natural history. We think that our review will be useful both in guiding new conservation efforts and opening new research perspectives that will help fill information gaps.

40. Reduced-order models of the Martian atmospheric dynamics

Abstract

In this paper we explore the possibility of deriving low-dimensional models of the dynamics of the Martian atmosphere. The analysis consists of a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) of the atmospheric streamfunction after first decomposing the vertical structure with a set of eigenmodes. The vertical modes were obtained from the quasi-geostrophic vertical structure equation. The empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) were optimized to represent the atmospheric total energy. The total energy was used as the criterion to retain those modes with large energy content and discard the rest. The principal components (PCs) were analysed by means of Fourier analysis, so that the dominant frequencies could be identified. It was possible to observe the strong influence of the diurnal cycle and to identify the motion and vacillation of baroclinic waves.

Abstract

Background Atrial fibrillation is associated with higher mortality. Identification of causes of death and contemporary risk factors for all‐cause mortality may guide interventions. Methods and Results In the Rivaroxaban Once Daily Oral Direct Factor Xa Inhibition Compared with Vitamin K Antagonism for Prevention of Stroke and Embolism Trial in Atrial Fibrillation (ROCKET AF) study, patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation were randomized to rivaroxaban or dose‐adjusted warfarin. Cox proportional hazards regression with backward elimination identified factors at randomization that were independently associated with all‐cause mortality in the 14 171 participants in the intention‐to‐treat population. The median age was 73 years, and the mean CHADS 2 score was 3.5. Over 1.9 years of median follow‐up, 1214 (8.6%) patients died. Kaplan–Meier mortality rates were 4.2% at 1 year and 8.9% at 2 years. The majority of classified deaths (1081) were cardiovascular (72%), whereas only 6% were nonhemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism. No significant difference in all‐cause mortality was observed between the rivaroxaban and warfarin arms ( P =0.15). 42. A route to systematic error in forecasts of Rossby waves

Abstract

Recent work has shown that both the amplitude of upper-level Rossby waves and the tropopause sharpness decrease with forecast lead time for several days in some operational weather forecast systems. In this contribution, the evolution of error growth in a case study of this forecast error type is diagnosed through analysis of operational forecasts and hindcast simulations. Potential vorticity (PV) on the 320-K isentropic surface is used to diagnose Rossby waves. The Rossby-wave forecast error in the operational ECMWF high-resolution forecast is shown to be associated with errors in the forecast of a warm conveyor belt (WCB) through trajectory analysis and an error metric for WCB outflows. The WCB forecast error is characterised by an overestimation of WCB amplitude, a location of the WCB outflow regions that is too far to the southeast, and a resulting underestimation of the magnitude of the negative PV anomaly in the outflow. Essentially the same forecast error development also occurred in all members of the ECMWF Ensemble Prediction System and the Met Office MOGREPS-15 suggesting that in this case model error made an important contribution to the development of forecast error in addition to initial condition error. Exploiting this forecast error robustness, a comparison was performed between the realised flow evolution, proxied by a sequence of short-range simulations, and a contemporaneous forecast. Both the proxy to the realised flow and the contemporaneous forecast a were produced with the Met Office Unified Model enhanced with tracers of diabatic processes modifying potential temperature and PV. Clear differences were found in the way potential temperature and PV are modified in the WCB between proxy and forecast. These results demonstrate that differences in potential temperature and PV modification in the WCB can be responsible for forecast errors in Rossby waves.

We describe the flight behaviour of the Red-backed Hawk (Buteo polyosoma) during summer in Nevados de Chillán, Chile. Flight types most often used were gliding, wind-hovering and soaring (36.7%, 29.4% and 27.8% of the flying time, respectively). Spent time in gliding and wind-hovering peaked at mid-afternoon (17:00–19:00 h). Conversely, soaring was highest between mid-morning (10:00–11:00 h) and mid-day (13:00–14:00 h). Red-backed Hawk individuals appeared to use these flight types in an opportunistically manner using advantageous microclimatic and topographic conditions. Describimos los tipos de vuelo del Aguilucho Común (Buteo polyosoma) durante el verano en Nevados de Chillán, Chile. Los tipos de vuelo usados más a menudo fueron el vuelo planeado, el vuelo estacionario y el vuelo circular encumbrado (36.7%, 29.4% y 27.8% del tiempo de vuelo total, respectivamente). El tiempo invertido en el vuelo planeado y el vuelo estacionario fue máximo durante la media tarde (17:00–19:00 h). Por el contrario, la cantidad de tiempo invertido en el vuelo circular encumbrado fue mayor entre la media mañana (10:00–11:00 h) y el mediodía (13:00–14:00 h). Los aguiluchos parecieron usar estos tipos de vuelo de una manera oportunista, tomando provecho de las ventajas microclimáticas y las condiciones topográficas.

Abstract

We quantified the diet of the Rufous-legged Owl (Strix rufipes) by analysing 63 pellets collected during 2003 and 2005 in a small coastal sclerophyllous forest stand at the northern limit of its distribution in Chile (31–32° S). The diet comprised small mammals (frequency = 57.8%, biomass = 99.3%), crustaceans (frequency = 1.7%, biomass = 0.1%), and insects (frequency = 40.5%, biomass = 0.6%). We identified at least 10 small mammal species in these pellets of which Bennett's chinchilla rat (Abrocoma bennetti; frequency = 12.4%) and long-tailed pygmy rice rat (Oligoryzomys longicaudatus; frequency = 7.4%) were the most frequently occurring mammalian prey remains. Terrestrial small mammals accounted for 21.5% by frequency of all individuals and 49.1% of the total biomass; scansorial/arboreal small mammals accounted for only 13.2% of all individual prey and 17.2% of total biomass.

Abstract

During the breeding seasons 2001–2005 we determined the nest measurements and characteristics of a Chilean Hawk (Accipiter chilensis) pair in an Andean Nothofagus forest of northern Patagonia (36°S; 50 km east of Chillan). The five platforms were built on forked branches in the upper part of the trees, 16–20 m above ground. One nest and one nesting tree were reused. Nests were built close to the main trunk or a vertical gross branch. The nesting trees were live adult Nothofagus dombeyi trees. The measured nests were oval‐shaped platforms similar in size. Nests were built with dry twigs and sticks, which were strongly intertwined. The egg‐shell remains found under the nesting trees were light bluish white or dull white, unspotted and nonglossy on the outer surface, and bluish tinged on the inner surface. Abstract

BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular safety and efficacy of many current antihyperglycemic agents, including saxagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, are unclear. METHODS: We randomly assigned 16,492 patients with type 2 diabetes who had a history of, or were at risk for, cardiovascular events to receive saxagliptin or placebo and followed them for a median of 2.1 years. Physicians were permitted to adjust other medications, including antihyperglycemic agents. The primary end point was a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or ischemic stroke. RESULTS: A primary end-point event occurred in 613 patients in the saxagliptin group and in 609 patients in the placebo group (7.3% and 7.2%, respectively, according to 2-year Kaplan-Meier estimates; hazard ratio with saxagliptin, 1.00; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.89 to 1.12; P=0.99 for superiority; P

Abstract

Two dung beetle species were studied over the course of 14 months in grasslands located on the eastern side of the Pico de Orizaba volcano in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, at an altitude of 2,700 m. Field samples were analyzed monthly to determine population abundances and sexual maturity stages. The most abundant species was Aphodius (Trichaphodius) opisthius Bates, which was active from June to December 1998, and from May to July 1999. In 1998, this species showed two population peaks, the highest in June, the other in November. Between June and August, individuals were found in maturing and mature sexual stages. In contrast, between September and December, the individuals found were recently emerged and immatures. No Aphodius opisthius individuals were found between January and April 1999, the period of the year that is cold and dry. Possibly the immature adults of both sexes entered into diapause.
