Evaluating the Mechanical Behaviour of Geotextile Reinforced Sand It is important to determine the mechanical properties of reinforced soils, since they are extensively used in practice. In this study, laboratory triaxial tests and direct shear tests were carried out in order to determine the stress-strain and dilation characteristics of geotextile-reinforced river sand. The mechanical behaviour of the composite material was investigated through varying the type of geotextile and confining pressure. Interface properties of geotextile-reinforced samples were evaluated with the direct shear tests. Bu çalışma kapsamında fiber katkılı gevşek (Dr=25%) suya doygun kumların drenajsız yükleme koşulları altındaki davranışları konsolidasyonlu drenajsız üç eksenli basınç deneyleri ile incelenmiştir. Deneyler 50, 100 ve 200 kPa efektif konsolidasyon basınçları altında ve %0.5 ile %1 fiber katkısı durumları için gerçekleştirilmiştir. Deney sonuçları fiber katkısının gevşek kumların drenajsız koşullardaki kayma dayanımı davranışında iyileşme sağlandığını göstermiştir. Deneylerde gözlemlenen ilginç bir sonuç, çoğu örnekte drenajsız kesme koşullarında elde edilen hacim değişimi eğilimlerinin genellikle hacim artışı ve dolayısı ile aşırı boşluk suyu basınçlarını azaltıcı yönde gerçekleşmiş olmasıdır. Aşırı boşluk suyu basınçlarındaki azalma efektif gerilmelerin ve dolayısı ile kayma dayanımının artışına olanak sağlamaktadır ki deprem durumundaki yükleme koşulları için elverişli bir durumdur. Ancak fiber katkılı kumların hacim değişimi eğilimleri ile ilgili olarak literatürde çok az çalışma bulunmaktadır. Bu deneysel çalışmada elde edilen sonuçlar, kum matrisi ve fiber fazının, deviatorik ve hacimsel davranışa ayrı ayrı katkı yaptıklarını göstermiştir, In the context of this paper, undrained response of fiber reinforced sands is investigated through consolidated undrained triaxial tests conducted under effective consolidation pressures of 50, 100 and 200 kPa. in loose state of the host sand (Dr=25%) and at fiber concentrations of 0.5% and 1%. Results were challenging since addition of fiber reinforcement caused increased dilative tendency of the host sand giving way to considerable amount of decrease in excess pore water pressures which is advantageous for undrained loading conditions especially for earthquake loading conditions. This behaviour brought about the fact that both fiber phase and the sand matrix should be contributing to hydrostatic and deviatoric stress states of the fiber reinforced samples which was also proved very recently by a couple of researchers in the literature

Earthwork optimization plays an important role for reducing the total cost of highway projects. Weighted Ground Line Method (WGLM) is an earthwork optimization technique based on a hypothetical ground line balancing cut-fill volumes and minimizing the total amount of earthwork. Current form of the method describes only a hypothetical reference line guiding project engineers to locate the optimal roadway for the fixed horizontal alignment. Therefore, there are numerous grade line alternatives available for a given Weighted Ground Line. The aim of this study is to present a method to integrate discrete dynamic programming with WGLM to achieve the best vertical alignment of highways in terms of earthwork optimization.

Compaction is one of the most efficient and practical soil improvement techniques that can be applied to earthworks. In the field, compaction control is commonly carried out by sand-cone and nuclear gauge tests. Whether conducted in the field or in the laboratory, these tests are intended to determine optimum water content and dry unit weight parameters, information required for design specifications. In this study, the parameters of field soil densification obtained by various testing methods performed in the same region are compared: unit weight, water content, and densification percentage are measured by nuclear density and sand cone tests. The variations in the outcomes of nuclear density and sand cone tests, namely unit weight, water content, and densification percent, are recorded. It is well-known that the nuclear density test has the advantage of rapid application; nevertheless, this method gives approximate results that should be correlated with a more precise technique, such as sand cone testing. The data at hand are first subjected to statistical analyses. Next, several techniques are used to identify the correlation between the results of the 2 tests. Finally, susceptibility and reliability concepts are considered in evaluating the combined usage of the tests in civil engineering practice.

Recently, in geotechnical engineering field, applications of geosynthetics are gettingrather more common. Geosynthetics are capable of overcoming a number of problems includingseperation, filtration, drainage, reinforcement; which multiple functions can be fulfilled once at atime. Particularly, application of a type of geosynthetics, namely, geotextiles, which are possessingrather high tensile strength, lead to increase in the shear strength of soil, hence, soils strengthenedwith geosythetics are named as reinforced soil.In particular, many studies in the literature are related with the investigation of the rate ofincrease in soil strength by application of geosynthetic materials, which are used for increasing thestability and reinforcing the subgrade material in highway construction. In the scope of this study,the effect of geotextile type on the rate of increase in stability of sandy soils, is investigated understatic loading conditions. Shear box tests on specimens prepared by inclusion of geotextiles ofdifferent types and properties, were carried out to assess the rate of variation in sand shear strengthproperties. It was observed that geotextile type, grain size distribution, relative density of sand andthe test parameters cause drastic variations in the sand / geotextile interface shear strength behaviour., Geoteknik mühendisliÂi alanÍnda geosentetik malzemelerin kullan͖Ína günümüzdeoldukça yaygÍn bir óekilde rastlanmaktadÍr. In order to determine the compressive strength in structures components of finished reinforced concrete systems, the destructive method of obtaining core samples and the non-destructive method of surface hardness method are widely used separately or together. In Turkey, basic principles about obtaining samples in hardened concrete in structures and the tests applied are based on TS 10465 and TS EN 12504-1 standards. However, there seems to be serious conflicts in these standards about the method for obtaining samples and their calculation principles. In this study, considering these standards, existing drawbacks and uncertainties were emphasized and related solution proposals were presented. Accounting the percentage of reinforced concrete structures in our country, these standards become more crucial; thus, it is essential to remove these serious doubts about considered strength analyzing methods for helping our engineers to evaluate in a better way, İmalatı tamamlanmış betonarme yapılara ait yapı elemanlarının basınç dayanımlarının tayin edilmesi için, tahribatlı bir deney yöntemi olan karot numunesi alınması ve tahribatsız bir deney yöntemi olan yüzey sertliği metodu, yaygın olarak ayrı ayrı veya birlikte kullanılmaktadır. Ülkemizde, sertleşmiş betondan karot alınması ve test edilmesi ile ilgili temel hususlar, TS 10465 ve TS EN 12504/1 standartları ile belirlenmiştir. Halen yürürlükte olan bu standartlarda belirtilen numune alma yöntemi ve hesap esasları ile ilgili önemli tereddütler mevcuttur. Bu çalışmada, ilgili standartlar irdelenerek, bu standardın eksiklikleri ve çelişkileri ortaya konulmuş ve çözüm önerileri sunulmaya çalışılmıştır. Yapı stoğunun çoğunu betonarme yapıların oluşturduğu ve mevcut yapıların yapısal dayanımları ile ilgili ciddi şüphelerin var olduğu ülkemizde, bu standartça önerilen yöntemler ile yapılan analizler çok büyük önem taşımaktadır. Dolayısıyla bu standart ile ilgili oluşan tereddütlerin ortadan kaldırılması, bu konu ile ilgili çalışan mühendislerimizin daha doğru değerlendirme yapabilmesini sağlayacaktır.
