A systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies conducted in Turkey was performed to assess the latest profile and temporal changes in cardiovascular risk factors. Presented here are the data on hypertension (HT) and blood pressure (BP). Methods: Ovid Medline, the Web of Science Core Collection, and the Turkish Academic Network and Information Center (ULAKBIM) were searched for epidemiological studies conducted in Turkey during the last 15 years. In addition, the web pages of the Ministry of Health, the Turkish Statistical Institute, and associations of cardiology, nephrology, and endocrinology were searched for appropriate studies. Regional studies were excluded. The studies included were assessed with a bias score developed by our team, then categorized as having a low risk or a high risk of bias. The crude values of HT prevalence and BP were pooled using a random effects model. Meta-regression was performed to explain heterogeneity and to assess temporal changes. Results: The agreement between the 2 authors on the selection and bias scoring of the studies was perfect (Kappa ?0.95). There were 7 (n=73218) studies providing HT prevalence data, and 8 (n=75879) studies with BP data. The heterogeneity between the studies was high. Meta-analysis of the studies with a low risk of bias indicated that the crude prevalence of HT is higher in women, but that BP levels were similar in both sexes. The HT prevalence and BP value decreased between 2003 and 2012; however, the number of hypertensives stabilized at approximately 15 million, and the number of uncontrolled hypertensives, despite some decrease, was around 11 million. Conclusion: Despite some improvement, HT is still an important public health problem in Turkey. © 2018 Archives of the Turkish Society of Cardiology.

Lignocellulosic biomasses, such as crops, wood, grass and food waste, are sustainable potential resources for bio-ethanol production. Out of the three main steps needed for the conversion process (pretreatment, enzymatic degradation and fermentation), the pretreatment, which can be chemical or microbial, is the most crucial one. In this work we provide evidence that wood flour, a common waste sub-product of wood furniture manufacturing, is the ideal substrate for an efficient microbial pretreatment of lignocellulose. We isolated from the bovine rumen two strains of B. pumilus and B. licheniformis that were deeply characterized and tested for their ability in lignocellulose pretreatment. Moreover, the enzymatic degradation step can be partially completed by the same microorganisms producing a mixture of glucose and cellobiose. We further developed genetically engineered, recombinant yeast strain capable of vigorous growth using cellobiose as the only carbon source. We therefore demonstrated that the sequential treatment of wood flour firstly by Bacilli and secondly by S. cerevisiae allows an efficient and economic conversion of biomass into glucose leading to interesting perspectives in bio-ethanol production., Proceedings of the 23rd European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 1-4 June 2015, Vienna, Austria, pp. 979-982

Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has an increased risk of maternal and fetal complications. Increased maternal cardiac risk is one of the most important complications. QT dispersion and Tp-e duration are findings of surface electrocardiogram (ECG) and they are used an index of inhomogeneity in ventricular electrical activity, and prolongation of QT dispersion is related to increased incidence of ventricular arrhythmias. In this study, we aimed to investigate QT dispersion, Tp-e interval and Tp-eIQT ratio in pregnant women with GDM and emphasize the increased cardiac risk and the importance of GDM screening

The aim of our study was to delineate the demographic and clinical properties of primary glomerular diseases of adult population in our country in the light of global knowledge. All over the country, a total of 25 centers entered data between May 2009 and July 2012 to the database created by 'Glomerulonephritis Study Group' of Turkish Society of Nephrology. Demographic and clinical characteristics, specific diagnoses of glomerular diseases and biopsy findings recorded to the database were analyzed. Among the 1,274 patients, who had renal biopsy within the defined time period, 55 % were male and 45 % were female. The mean age was 40.8 +/- A 14.6 years. The most frequent indication for biopsy was nephrotic syndrome (57.8 %), followed by nephritic syndrome including rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (16.6 %) and asymptomatic urinary abnormalities (10.8 %). The most frequent primary glomerular disease was membranous nephropathy (28.8 %), followed by focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (19.3 %) and IgA nephropathy (17.2 %). The presented study displayed important data about the epidemiology of primary glomerular diseases among adults in our country. The predominance of membranous nephropathy in contrast to other countries, in which the most frequent etiology is IgA nephropathy, seems to be due to differences in the indications for renal biopsy.

PubMed: 16358496 Vancomycin resistant enterococcus (VRE) was recovered from the urine culture of a 61 years old female patient, who was being treated for sepsis, on the 15th day of hospitalization in Ondokuz Mayis University Hospital Infectious Disease Unit. The underlying diseases of this patient were chronic renal failure and diabetes mellitus. The patient died due to septic shock on the day of VRE isolation. Since this case was the first VRE infection in our hospital, a point prevalence study was planned. For this purpose, rectal swab samples collected from 10 patients from the same unit and 27 personnel who worked in the same unit, were screened for the presence of VRE. Nasal swabs and finger tip samples were also taken from the staff to determine if the transmission has occured in this way. As a result, a second VRE strain was isolated from another patient with chronic renal failure who was under treatment due to multiple pulmonary abscesses. Immediate isolation of this patient prevented a possible epidemic in this specific unit. In this report, the importance of VRE screening and isolation of the patients after the recovery of VRE has been emphasized.
