Despite various calls for a thorough re-conceptualization of current English language teaching (ELT) practices, incorporating courses for critical perspectives on linguistic and cultural diversity is still a major challenge in most teacher education programmes in many English as a foreign language (EFL) countries. Therefore, we explored the evolving perspectives of English as a global language among Turkish pre-service English teachers (PELTs) in response to a global Englishes-focused curriculum. Using self-report data, the study reveals participants' complex and diverse views on language varieties in English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) communication, driven by various reasons. After a GE-oriented course, most participants shifted to plurilithic orientations as they softened their beliefs in native-speaker English superiority and developed a more sophisticated understanding of English. Seven participants with monolithic orientation appeared to reduce the complex and dynamic nature of language to racialized stereotypes associated with native speaker norms. Based on the findings, how language orientations and ideologies may inform teacher preparation in language teaching was discussed. Several recommendations for further research and preparation of PELTs were made.

Western Eurasia witnessed several large-scale human migrations during the Holocene1-5. Here, to investigate the cross-continental effects of these migrations, we shotgun-sequenced 317 genomes-mainly from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods-from across northern and western Eurasia. These were imputed alongside published data to obtain diploid genotypes from more than 1,600 ancient humans. Our analyses revealed a 'great divide' genomic boundary extending from the Black Sea to the Baltic. Mesolithic hunter-gatherers were highly genetically differentiated east and west of this zone, and the effect of the neolithization was equally disparate. Large-scale ancestry shifts occurred in the west as farming was introduced, including near-total replacement of hunter-gatherers in many areas, whereas no substantial ancestry shifts happened east of the zone during the same period. Similarly, relatedness decreased in the west from the Neolithic transition onwards, whereas, east of the Urals, relatedness remained high until around 4,000 BP, consistent with the persistence of localized groups of hunter-gatherers. The boundary dissolved when Yamnaya-related ancestry spread across western Eurasia around 5,000 BP, resulting in a second major turnover that reached most parts of Europe within a 1,000-year span. The genetic origin and fate of the Yamnaya have remained elusive, but we show that hunter-gatherers from the Middle Don region contributed ancestry to them. Yamnaya groups later admixed with individuals associated with the Globular Amphora culture before expanding into Europe. Similar turnovers occurred in western Siberia, where we report new genomic data from a 'Neolithic steppe' cline spanning the Siberian forest steppe to Lake Baikal. These prehistoric migrations had profound and lasting effects on the genetic diversity of Eurasian populations.

Microfiltration is a commonly used pressure-driven membrane separation process for various applications. Depending on the manufacturing method, either tortuous or capillary pore structures are obtained. The structure plays an important role in controlling flux, selectivity, but most importantly, the fouling tendency of the membrane. This review attempts to cover past and current developments in physical morphology and fouling characterization methods, along with the manufacturing methods for microfiltration membranes. The limitations and advantages of direct microscopic techniques and gas-liquid displacement as an indirect method are discussed for physical characterization. Additionally, the current state of the art and technical challenges for various in-situ and ex-situ fouling characterization techniques are also discussed. Finally, some directions for future research are outlined.

The frequency of opportunistic fungal infections in critically ill patients whose intensive care unit stays are prolonged due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is higher than in the period before COVID-19. We planned this study to improve the management of Candida infections by defining the Candida species, the etiology of infections caused by Candida species, and the antifungal susceptibility of the species. This retrospective study included patients older than 18 hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) with a definitive diagnosis of COVID-19 for seven months (from March 2021 to September 2021). All study data that we recorded in a standard study form were analyzed with TURCOSA (Turcosa Analytics Ltd. Co., Turkey, www.turcosa.com.tr) statistical software. The patients were evaluated in four groups as group 1 (candidemia patients, n = 78), group 2 (candiduria patients, n = 189), group 3 (control patients, n = 57), and group 4 (patients with candidemia in urine cultures taken before Candida was detected in blood culture, n = 42). Candida species were identified using both conventional and VITEK® 2 (BioMérieux, France) methods. The antifungal susceptibility of fungi was determined using the E test method. Of the 5,583 COVID-19 patients followed during the study period, 78 developed candidemia, and 189 developed candiduria. The incidence of candidemia (per 1,000 admissions) was determined to be 1.6. As a result of statistical analysis, we found that Candida albicans was the dominant strain in candidemia and candiduria, and there was no antifungal resistance except for naturally resistant strains. Candida strains grown in blood and urine were the same in 40 of 42 patients. Mortality was 69.2% for group 1, 60.4% for group 2, and 57.8% for group 3. Antifungals were used in 34 (43.5%) patients from group 1, and 95 (50.2%) from group 2. In the candidemia group without antifungal use, mortality was quite high (77.2%). Antifungal use reduced mortality in the group 2 (p < 0.05). Length of ICU stays, comorbidity, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and corticosteroids are independent risk factors for candidemia in critically ill COVID-19 patients. Our study contributes to the knowledge of risk factors for developing COVID-19-related candida infections. The effect of candiduria on the development of candidemia in critically ill COVID-19 patients should be supported by new studies.

Herein, a selective passivation of p‐GaN via hydrogen plasma treatment for InGaN single‐quantum‐well (SQW) red light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) is reported. Insulating regions are formed on the p‐GaN top surface via hydrogen plasma treatment, suppressing current injection beneath the p‐pad and along the mesa perimeter to increase light output and mitigate non‐radiative recombination. The fabricated LEDs demonstrate a high on‐wafer light output power density of >88 mW cm−2, a peak on‐wafer external quantum efficiency of 0.65%, and on‐wafer wall‐plug efficiency of 0.41% with a 645 nm peak emission wavelength at 10 mA (7.2 A cm−2) current injection. Further, the temperature dependence of InGaN SQW red LEDs is compared with their AlGaInP counterparts. InGaN SQW red LEDs exhibit a high characteristic temperature of 208 K and a small redshift coefficient of 0.072 nm K−1 at 72 A cm−2 current injection, which are almost 3 and 2 times better than the characteristics of AlGaInP red LEDs, respectively. Here, we report the first demonstration of a full InGaN-based red LED grown on a c -plane ScAlMgO _4 substrate. This work represents a potential approach for achieving red emissions from an InGaN quantum well grown on InGaN underlying layers. The LED device exhibits a peak wavelength of 617 nm at a current injection of 40 mA (10.5 A cm ^−2 ). The light output power and external quantum efficiency were 12.6 μ W and 0.016% at 40 mA (10.5 A cm ^−2 ), respectively. These results are expected to contribute to the development of longer-wavelength emission LEDs and laser diodes.

The inference of ploidy levels from genomic data is important to understand molecular mechanisms underpinning genome evolution. However, current methods based on allele frequency and sequencing depth variation do not have power to infer ploidy levels at low- and mid-depth sequencing data, as they do not account for data uncertainty. Here we introduce HMMploidy, a novel tool that leverages the information from multiple samples and combines the information from sequencing depth and genotype likelihoods. We demonstrate that HMMploidy outperforms existing methods in most tested scenarios, especially at low-depth with large sample size. We apply HMMploidy to sequencing data from the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans and retrieve pervasive patterns of aneuploidy, even when artificially downsampling the sequencing data. We envisage that HMMploidy will have wide applicability to low-depth sequencing data from polyploid and aneuploid species.

ABSTRACT Objective: Galanin is a neuropeptide which has effects not only on metabolic syndrome but also on reproduction. Glypican-4 is an adipokine associated with insulin sensitivity by interacting directly with the insulin receptor. This study evaluated serum concentrations of galanin and glypican-4 in relation with the hormonal profile as well as metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors in patients with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Subjects and methods: A total of 44 women with PCOS and 44 age-matched controls were eligible. Hirsutism scores, hormonal profile, metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors as well as galanin and glypican-4 levels were evaluated in each subject. Results: Women with PCOS exhibited lower levels of galanin (20.2 pg/mL versus 26.4 pg/mL, p = 0.002) and higher concentrations of glypican-4 (3.1 ng/mL versus 2.6 ng/mL, p < 0.001) than controls. Both adipokines were correlated positively with body mass index (BMI), insulin, triglyceride and Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) index; glypican-4 also showed positive correlations with fasting blood glucose, free testosterone, modified Ferriman-Gallwey scores (p < 0.05). Multiple Linear Regression analyses showed that PCOS and BMI were the best predictors affecting galanin levels with a decreasing and increasing effect respectively; however BMI was the best predictor affecting glypican-4 levels with an increasing effect (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Galanin levels were lower and glypican-4 levels were higher in women with PCOS than controls. Further studies are needed to determine whether these adipokines could be used as additional markers for insulin sensitivity and lipid profile and whether they might play a role in the pathogenesis of PCOS, in which metabolic cardiovascular risks are increased.

BackgroundThe WHO emphasized the importance of knowing the risk factors for the severity of the disease in the COVID-19 pandemic. Our aim in this study was to determine the relationship between serum Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) level, which is rapidly affected by inflammation, and the severity of COVID-19 pneumonia and mortality.MethodsPatients diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia between March and May 2021 were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups as severe and mild to moderate pneumonia according to the WHO's guidelines. Serum BChE levels were studied by ELISA method from the blood samples taken from the patients on the day of hospitalization. The severity of the disease and other factors affecting hospital mortality were also evaluated.Results147 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia were included in this study. Of these patients, 58% had severe pneumonia and 42% had mild to moderate pneumonia. The BChE level was median 13 (IQR: 11.2–21.5)ng/ml in patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia and median 20 (IQR: 10–35.7)ng/ml in patients with mild to moderate pneumonia (p: 0.001). Hospital with mortality rate was higher in patients with low BChE levels. However, statistically, BChE hasn't associated mortality in COVID-19 pneumonia [OR 1.002 (0.957–1.049) p: 0.490]. CRP, procalcitonin, lactate, and D-dimer levels were associated mortality in COVID-19 pneumonia.ConclusionBeing not statistically significant, the mortality rate was higher in patients with low BChE levels. BChE level is an important marker in determining the severity of COVID-19 pneumonia. Early prediction of the severity of COVID-19 pneumonia will enable early planning of the treatment process.
