Supplemental Material forAntimicrobial Properties of Highly Elastic Conductive Poly(ethylene terephthalate)/Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Fabrics by Nilüfer Y Varan, Pelin Altay and Yavuz Çaydamlı in Journal of Industrial Textiles

Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is an important atmospheric pollutant, and capture of SO2 is of great importance for the environment, human health and market. Carbon based materials, especially activated carbon, are mostly used for adsorption purposes. However, there is a notable lack on adsorption of SO2 on graphene oxide (GO) fibers and fiber web surface. In this study, the effect of addition of activated carbon, pH of GO dispersions, hydrazine reduction and oxygen/argon plasma treatment on SO2 adsorption of GO fiber web surface were evaluated. It was seen that GO fiber web surface with activated carbon provides high SO2 adsorption (896 mg SO2/g) which is very higher than many of carbon based materials presented in the literatures. Single coagulation bath increases surface roughness of fiber and provides higher functional group than three coagulation baths leading to higher SO2 adsorption capacity.

Since late 20th century, the drawbacks of pollution became obvious which increases the demand for environmental friendly and ecological approaches in all disciplines. Not only using environment friendly materials and procedures, but also detecting any pollution, and potential solutions are also common area of current research. SO2, one of the significant topics in waste management, is reported to cause acidic rain. To abolish SO2 waste, excess temperature is required. The current efforts are to develop materials that can remove SO2 at comparatively low temperatures. The aim of this study is to examine a potential use of graphene oxide (GO) fibers and composite polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) incorporated GO fibers in SO2 filters. So as to observe the effect of PVA incorporation on composite fiber properties, PVA incorporated GO fibers and neat GO fibers were prepared. GO fibers were prepared with modified Hummers method followed by wet spinning through three coagulation baths. For composite fiber formation, 10% PVA was added to coagulation bath three. So formed fiber morphologies were analyzed with SEM, AFM and BET. Electrical conductivities were calculated from electrical resistances measured with conductivity tester. The SO2 adsorption and desorption properties were measured in a quartz reactor. PVA addition did not have a significant effect on electrical conductivity whereas increases the SO2 adsorption capacity and reduces the surface roughness, pore size, pore volume and surface area.

In this study, the effect of activation time and flow rate of CO2 on the SO2 adsorption properties of activated carbonnanofiber has been investigated. The activation process was performed under different CO2 flow rates (100 and 150mL/min) and activation times (30 and 60 minutes). At the FTIR spectra, the formation of a new peak at around 1050 cm-1after SO2 adsorption test, showed the presence of SO2 adsorbed on the activated carbon nanofibers. The elementalanalyses also confirmed the presence of S atom in the analysed sample after SO2 adsorption test. It has been seen that anincrease in activation time and decrease in CO2 feeding rate resulted in an increase in SO2 adsorption capability ofactivated carbon nanofibers. Rather than the flow rate of the activation gas, activation time has higher effect on the SO2adsorption capability of activated carbon nanofibers., Bu çalışmada, aktivasyon süresi (30 dakika ve 60 dakika) ve aktivasyon gaz (CO2) besleme hızları (100 mL/dak ve 150 mL/dak)değiştirilerek, aktif karbon nanoliflerin, zararlı SO2 gazını adsorplama özelliği incelenmiştir. FTIR analizinde 1050 cm-1 civarlarındagörülen pik ve SEM-EDS elemental analizde tespit edilen S elementi, adsorplamanın gerçekleştiğini göstermektedir. CO2 besleme hızıazaldıkça ve aktivasyon süresi arttıkça, SO2 adsorplama miktarının arttığı, her iki parametrenin artması ile aktive olmuş nanolifin lifçapının düştüğü görülmüştür. SO2 adsorplama kapasitesine tesir bakımından, aktivasyon süresi değişiminin, CO2 besleme hızıdeğişiminden daha fazla tesirli olduğu tespit edilmiştir.

Daha iyi bir insan hayatı için en önemli teknolojilerden biri çevre kirliliğinin engellenmesidir. Titanyum dioksit, güçlü oksidasyon yetkinliği, düşük maliyeti, zehirsiz olması, yüksek yapısal kararlılığı ve kolay erişilebilmesi gibi özelliklerinden dolayı hava ve su arıtma sistemlerinin göz bebeği haline gelmiştir. Ancak, geniş elektronik bant aralığına sahip olmasından dolayı, titanyum dioksit sadece güneş ışığının %3'ünü oluşturan UV ışığını soğurabilmektedir. Bu malzemenin güneş ışığını kullanabilmesi, çevre arıtımı için gereken işletim maliyetini oldukça düşürecektir. Bu yüzden, titanyum dioksiti güneş spektrumunun büyük bir parçasını kullanabilmesi için görünür ışık aktif malzemelere dönüştürmek önemli bir hedef haline gelmiştir.Bu çalışmada, görünür ışık ile aktifleşen titanyum dioksit tozlarının hazırlanması amacıyla çeşitli ametal bileşiklerinin titanyum dioksit sol-jel sentez protokolüne eklenmesi incelenmiştir. Bu çalışma bir ön çalışma olup, hedeflerinden en önemlisi, daha önce çalışılan UV aktif titanyum dioksit tozları ile birleştirilerek; özel tasarım bir hava arıtım teknolojisi için, UV ve VIS aktif ikili (eşlenik) sistemlerde kullanılmasıdır. Bu sebeple, mevcut çalışmada iki temel fotokatalizör ailesi sentezlenerek, yapısal ve fotokatalitik performans özellikleri incelenmiştir.İlk grup numuneler, titanyumun ametal bileşikleri olan TiC, TiN ve TiS2'ün sol-jel yöntemine eklenmesi ile hazırlanmıştır. Katkı atomun titanyuma olan mol oranı 0.1:1 olarak belirlenmiş ve sentezlenen tozlar XRD, Raman spektroskopisi, BET ve UV-VIS DR spektroskopisi ile karakterize edilmiş ve kalsinasyon sıcaklığı, yüzey alanı ve elektronik bant aralığının fotokatalitik aktiviteye olan etkisi araştırılmıştır. Sol-jel yöntemine ek olarak, sol-jel yönteminde katkı olarak kullanılan TiC, TiN ve TiS2 tozların, ayrıca havaya açık fırında tavlanmasıyla, kısmi olarak yükseltgenmiş fotokatalitik malzemeler de elde edilmiştir.İkinci olarak, farklı bir sol-jel yöntemiyle, borik asit, dietanolamin, trietilamin, tiyoüre, üre ve siklohekzanol gibi ucuz ametal bileşikleri ile katkılandırılmış titanyum dioksit türleri sentezlenmiştir. Hesaplama kolaylığından ötürü eklenen katkı bileşiğinin titanyum dioksite olan mol oranı, 0.5:1 olarak belirlenmiştir. Aynı karakterizasyon metodları, aynı parametrelerin fotokatalitik aktiviteye olan etkisini incelemek amacıyla kullanılmıştır.Fotokatalitik aktivite ölçümleri, tasarımı ve kurulumu mevcut çalışma çerevesinde gerçekleştirilen, görünür ışık aydınlatmalı, özel-tasarım fotokatalitik reaksiyon hücrelerinde, sıvı fazda organik bir kirletici olan Rhodamine B boyasının bozunması kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Bütün malzemelerin fotokatalitik performanslar, ticari Degussa P25 referans katalizör ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Fotokatalitik performans testleri, katkılandırılmış titanyum dioksit malzemelerinin, saf titanyum dioksit malzemesinden daha iyi görünür ışık aktivitesine sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. Ayrıca, bazı malzemelerin performansının Degussa P25'den bile daha iyi olduğu görülmüştür. Karakterizasyon yöntemleri anataz fazından rutil fazına geçişte katkı atomlarından dolayı bir gecikme olduğunu göstermiştir. Buna ek olarak, elektronik bant aralığı değerinin küçük olmasının, görünür ışık aktivitesi için önemli olsa da, bunun bir zorunluluk olmadığı; fotokatalitik aktiviteyi etkileyen başka bir çok önemli parametrenin (parçacık boyutu, yüzey alanı, kristalinite, aktif fasetler, oksijen boşlukları vb.) de varlığı saptanmıştır.Anahtar Kelimeler: TiO2, Heterojen Kütle Katkılandırması, Sol-Jel, Ametal Bileşikler, Görünür Işık, Fotokatalitik Oksidasyon One of the most important technologies for a better human life is environmental purification which has drawn attention and gained importance over the past years. Titanium dioxide has been the apple of the eye of both air and water purification systems for its strong ability of oxidation, low cost, nontoxicity, inertness and availability. However, being a wide band gap semiconductor, titanium dioxide can mostly absorb UV photons (lambda < 387 nm) in the sun light, which is only about 3% of the total solar radiation. In this regard, sensitizing titanium dioxide based materials capable of visible light absorption via doping methods is a challenging but yet a rewarding effort.In the current work, a variety of doping protocols have been employed in conjunction with sol-gel titanium dioxide synthesis protocols in an attempt to prepare visible-active photocatalytic powders. This study has been a preliminary work to propose a simple sol-gel synthesis route for the preparation of visible-active titanium dioxide in order to combine with previously studied UV active titanium dioxide powders to create tandem systems that will harvest both visible and UV light for water and air purification. Along these lines, two different sets of samples were prepared and investigated.The first set of samples was prepared by a sol-gel route with the addition of non-metallic compounds of Ti which are TiN, TiC and TiS2. Non-metal atom to titanium mol ratio was kept at 0.1:1 and the syntesized powders were characterized by XRD, Raman Spectroscopy, BET, UV-VIS Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy in order to investigate the effect of calcination temperature, surface area and band gap on photocatalytic activity. Besides, these commercial TiN, TiC and TiS2 powders that were used as dopants, were also annealed in open air to prepare partially oxidized titanium materials.Secondly, inexpensive sources of non-metal compounds such as boric acid, diethanolamine (DEA), triethylamine (TEA), thiourea, urea and cyclohexanol were added in an alternative sol gel synthesis route. Dopant compound to titanium dioxide mol ratio was also kept at 0.5:1. Structural and electronic characterization of this family of materials were also carried out in addition to photocatalytic activity tests.Photocatalytic activity measurements were done in liquid phase via the degradation of an organic contaminant, Rhodamine B, in a custom-designed VIS-illuminated photocatalytic reaction cells. Photocatalytic performance of all samples were compared with that of a commercially available Degussa P25 TiO2 benchmark catalyst. Photocatalytic preformance tests revealed improved photocatalytic activity for non-metal compound added titanium dioxide compared to unmodified titanium dioxide prepared with the same method. Also, several samples presented even higher photocatalytic activity compared to Degussa P25. Characterization experiments showed hinderance in anatase to rutile transformation due to foreign atoms. It was also observed that although a small band gap is important for the photocatalytic activity, there are other critical parameters such as particle size, surface area, crystallinity, active facets, oxygen vacancies which have to be fine tuned for photocatalytic performance optimization.Keywords: TiO2, Heterogeneous Bulk Doping, Sol-Gel, Non-Metal Compounds, VIS light, Photocatalytic Oxidation 113

Bu tezde % 100 poliester kumaşa, yeni geliştirilmiş olan maddelerle emdirme ve çektirme yöntemlerine göre güç tutuşurluk bitim işlemlerinin etkileri incelenmiştir. Poliester lifleri günümüzde sentetik lifler içerisinde ülkemizde ve dünyada en çok üretilen sentetik liflerdir.Bu liflerin yapılarının sıkı ve fonksiyonel gruplarının olmaması nedeniyle kimyasal madde aktarımı ile yıkamaya dayanıklı etkilerin elde edilmesi zor olmaktadır. In this thesis, the effects of flame retardancy finishing processes of 100 % poliester fabric with recently-developed retardants by padding and exhausting methods have been studied. Nowadays, the poliester fibers are the most produced synthetic fibers in our country and in the world.It is difficult to obtain washing durability effects by application of chemical retardants to poliester fibers; because these fibers have strict-structure and don?t have any functional groups. The core competency of the most e®ective organizations is their capacity tolearn in an increasingly complex and unpredictable business environment. Assessorsplay an additional critical role in the Quality Award Process by contributing in theirown personal development and in transformation of their organization into a learningorganization.This study has two purposes. First, it aims to explore the individual and orga-nizational learning of the assessors obtained throughout the Quality Award Process.To do so, a survey is carried out to aid management to realize the contribution of thisprocess to the individuals working as assessors. It is clearly observed that assessors ben-e¯t from the award process as an e®ective learning platform. Hence, the organizationsshould encourage and support their employees to act as assessors for being individuallydeveloped and for getting organizational learning by utilizing their experiences.The second purpose of this study is to develop an instrument to assess the currentstatus of the organizations as being learning organizations. Five organizations areselected, and a survey is carried out to investigate strengths and weaknesses regardingthe learning organization characteristics. The result of this study indicates that selectedorganizations exhibit many characteristics of a learning organization with particularstrengths in /Organizational Formation` and /IT Infrastructure` and weaknesses in/Empowerment` and /Learning from Failures and Successes`. This study shows thatapplying for the Quality Award Process and acting as an assessor in this process havesubstantial impacts on individual and organizational learning. 125
