Nanotechnology has proven to be an effective tool for the fight against bacteria. Methods: In this paper, we present the synthesis and traits of trimetal (CuZnFe) oxide nanoparticles (NPs) using X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. We evaluated the antibacterial activity of these NPs against gram-negative Escherichia coli and gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis and then compared it to that of their pure single-metal oxide components CuO and ZnO. Results: Our study showed that the antibacterial activity of the trimetal oxide NPs was greater against E. coli than against E. faecalis. Overall, the antimicrobial effect of trimetal NPs is between those of pure ZnO and CuO nanoparticles, which may mean that their cytotoxicity is also between that of pure ZnO and CuO NPs, making them potential antibiotics. However, the cytotoxicity of trimetal NPs to mammalian cells needs to be verified. Conclusion: The combination of three metal oxide NPs (ZnO, CuO, and Fe2O3) in one multimetal (CuZnFe) oxide NPs will enhance the therapeutic strategy against a wide range of microbial infections. Bacteria are unlikely to develop resistance against this new NP because bacteria must go through a series of mutations to become resistant to the trimetal oxide NP. Therefore, this NP can combat existing and emerging bacterial infections. Abstract The human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is an asymptomatic common virus that is typically harmless, but in some cases, it can be life threatening. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop novel diagnostic methods and strengthen the efforts to combat this virus. A microcantilever‐based biosensor functionalised with the UL83‐antibody of HCMV (UL83‐HCMV antibody) has been developed to detect the UL83‐antigen of HCMV (UL83‐HCMV antigen) at different concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 300 ng/ml. The response of the biosensor to the presence of UL83‐HCMV antigen was measured through the shift in resonance frequency before and after antigen–antibody binding. The system shows a low detection limit of 84 pg/ml, which is comparable to traditional sensors, and a detection time of less than 15 min was achieved. The selectivity of the sensor was demonstrated using three different proteins with and without the UL83‐HCMV antigen. The biosensor shows high selectivity for the UL83‐HCMV antigen. Mass loading by the UL83‐HCMV antigen was roughly estimated with a sensitivity of ∼30 fg/Hz. This technique is crucial for the fabrication of portable and low‐cost biosensors that can be used in real‐time monitoring and enables early medical diagnosis.

The removal of organic pollutants has become an increasingly important environmental concern. In recent years, there has been significant research into the use of nanomaterials for removing organic dyes in single-component systems. In this study, magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (magnetic MSNs) were prepared with an average particle size of 170 nm. Iron oxide nanoparticles (20 nm) were embedded within the mesoporous silica structure. These nanoparticles were functionalized with amine, derivatized with thiol, and then reacted with 5,5′-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB). The presence of DTNB molecules attached to the surface was confirmed by FTIR spectra, as evidenced by the appearance of peaks at ∼1528 cm−1 and ∼1365 cm−1. The nanoadsorbents demonstrated high removal efficiency for bromothymol blue (BT) and methyl orange (MO) at a pH below 5, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 139.27 mg/g and 101.62 mg/g for BT and MO, respectively. The linear regression coefficient value suggested that the adsorption of BT and MO onto magnetic MSNs-DTNB followed the Langmuir isotherm and second-order process. Overall, these findings suggest that magnetic MSNs-DTNB could be a promising nanoadsorbent for removing organic pollutants from contaminated water sources.

In this work, aspartic acid- and glycine-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Asp-MSNs and Gly-MSNs) were successfully prepared and applied as adsorbents for removal of methylene blue (MB) from contaminated water. The mesoporous structure of the fabricated nanomaterials was confirmed by nitrogen adsorption/desorption with specific surface area of ca. 700 m2/g and pore volume of 0.9 cm3/g for both Asp-MSNs and Gly-MSNs. The average size of the nanoadsorbents was estimated to be ca. 290 nm as characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The physical and chemical properties of the Asp-MSNs and Gly-MSNs were also characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, zeta potential, and elemental analysis. Asp-MSNs and Gly-MSNs exhibited good adsorption performance for removal of cationic organic dyes (MB). The equilibrium adsorption capacity of Asp-MSNs and Gly-MSNs was found to be 55 mg·g−1 and 43 mg·g−1, respectively, under the optimal conditions. The Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order equation exhibited good correlation with the isotherm and adsorption kinetic data for MB, respectively.

The removal of crystal violet (CV) dye from an aqueous solution has been investigated using anionic poly(potassium 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) (PKSPMA) brushes grafted on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize PKSPMA brushes modified MSNPs (PKSPMA@MSNPs). Surface-modified MSNPs were almost spherical shapes with sizes ranging between 190 nm and 340 nm with an average pore size of ca. 5. The adsorption process of the CV was investigated under various of testing conditions, including pH, contact duration and initial dye concentration. The maximum loading of CV onto PKSPMA@MSNPs was observed at pH 3, with approximately 91% adsorption efficiency at a concentration of 100 ppm. The removal of CV onto PKSPMA@MSNPs was best described by the Langmuir isotherm, with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (q _max ) of 128.37 mg g ^−1 . The kinetics of the adsorption process were best described by the pseudo-second-order model.

In this work, new nanoadsorbents consisting of polymer‐modified multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used to remove toxic ionic dyes, of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO), effectively from aqueous solutions. The MWCNTs were coated with polymer brushes of poly(potassium 3‐sulfopropyl methacrylate) (PKSPMA) and poly(2‐methacryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride) (PMETAC) via surface‐initiated atom transfer‐radical polymerization. The PKSPMA@MWCNTs and PMETAC@MWCNTs delivered removal efficiencies of ~80% at pH 7. Maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) reached 411.62 mg/g for MB using PKSPMA@MWCNTs and 224.60 mg/g for MO using PMETAC@MWCNTs, showcasing the effectiveness of these novel nanoadsorbents. The experimental results were analyzed using adsorption isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin) and kinetic models (pseudo‐first‐order, pseudo‐second‐order, and intraparticle diffusion). The Freundlich model provided an excellent fit for MB adsorption on both adsorbents, whereas the Temkin model best described MO adsorption on PKSPMA@MWCNTs and the Langmuir model on PMETAC@MWCNTs. The fitting results showed that the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model was the most accurate fit for MB and MO adsorption on both nanoadsorbents, suggesting that the removal mechanism was chemisorption. In conclusion, PKSPMA@MWCNTs and PMETAC@MWCNTs demonstrate significant potential as effective adsorbents for dye removal from water, providing a promising approach for water treatment and environmental remediation. Poly(2‑(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate) brushes (PTBAEMA) are grown from mesoporous silica nanoparticles via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). Linear PTBAEMA brushes are protonated and highly swollen at low pH; brushes are collapsed at pH higher than 7.7 due to deprotonation, as determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Quaternization of these brushes is conducted using 2-iodoethanol in alkali media. DLS measurement of nanoparticles shows that surface-confined quaternization occurs and produces pH-responsive brushes with a hydrophobic upper surface. Variation of the 2-iodoethanol reaction time enables the mean degree of surface quaternization. The pH-responsive behaviour of quaternized PTBEAMA brushes at 1 h reaction time indicates low degrees of surface quaternization, dictated by the spatial location of 2-iodoethanol. Almost uniformly quaternized brushes prepared when the conducted for 3 h and became less swollen at low pH than brushes that conducted for 1 h. The intensity of the C − C − O component (286.5 eV) in the C1s X-ray photoelectron spectrum increased, suggesting that the reaction with iodoethanol was successful occurred.

A platform technology based on inorganic/organic nanoparticles for carrying drugs could be of enormous potential benefit in treating cancer. Surface modification of the nanoparticles with pH-responsive and biocompatible polymers can improve the selectivity and targeting toward the tumor cells. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and its derivatives being present on the surface could enhance the ability to tailor nanomaterial hydrophilicity and to resist the adhesion of proteins and/or cells. Herein, we report a new nanoplatform based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) conjugated with poly(2-(diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) brushes as a candidate for stimuli-responsive intracellular drug delivery system. Alkyl bromide functional initiators (end-functionalized PDEAEMA brushes) were derivatized to amine, followed by the reaction with ethylene sulfide and poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (POEGMEA). Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to examine the attachment of POEGMEA, it was found that the POEGMEA molecules in the outer surface of PDEAEMA brushes have been successfully reacted with thiol groups, as indicated by the increase in the peak intensity of the C–O group at 286.5 eV. Brush-modified silica hybrids have an average diameter of ca. 250 nm, as estimated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Rhodamine B dye was loaded into the brush-modified silica hybrids nanoparticles with loading capacity of ca. 74%. The accumulated dye released from brush-modified particles in acidic media was approximately 60%, whereas the dye amount release in basic media was less than 15% after 10 h exposure time. Alamar Blue assay was used to assess the cytotoxicity of MSNs–PDEAEMA, MSNs–PDEAEMA–SH, and MSNs–PDEAEMA–POEGMEA. The results show that all three nanosystems were non-toxic to hMSC with an increase in cell proliferation for MSNs–PDEAEMA–POEGMEA at 50 µg/mL after both 24 and 48 h of incubation.

[C9H14N]2[MnCl4] (I) and [C9H14N]2[CoCl4] (II) are isostructural compounds produced via gradual evaporation at room temperature. Both compounds consolidate in the tetragonal space group I4¯2d (No. 122), as shown by single-crystal X-ray diffraction observations. A slightly deformed tetrahedral geometry is formed by four chloride atoms around each cation MII (M = Mn or Co). The [C9H14N]+ groups and the isolated [MCl4]2− units are connected via C–H…Cl and N–H…Cl H-bonds to form sheets parallel to the (101¯), (011), (01¯1) and (101) planes. The morphology and the chemical composition of compounds (I) and (II)were determined here using SEM and EDX. The functional groups contained in both compounds were determined using FT-IR spectroscopy. The study of the optical characteristics showed that the two compounds exhibited semiconductor behavior. The thermal analysis (TGA-DTA) was used to determine their thermal stability.

Membranes are an efficient way to treat emulsified heavy metal-based wastewater, but they generally come with a trade-off between permeability and selectivity. In this research, the amine and sulphonic groups on the inner and outer surface of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were first modified by a chemical approach. Then, MSNs with amine and sulphonic groups were utilized as new inorganic nanofiller to fabricate mixed matrix polysulfone (PSU) nanocomposite membranes using the classical phase inversion approach. The resultant nanoparticles and membranes were characterized by their physico-chemical characteristics as well as determination of pure water permeability along with cadmium and zinc ion removal. Embedding nanoparticles resulted in a significant rise in the water permeability as a result of changes in the surface properties and porosity of the membrane. Furthermore, the efficiency of developed membranes to remove cadmium and zinc was significantly improved by more than 90% due to the presence of functional groups on nanoparticles. The functionalized-MSNs/PSU nanocomposite membrane has the potential to be an effective industrial effluent removal membrane.

Magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Fe3O4-MSNs) were successfully synthesized with a relatively high surface area of 568 m2g−1. Fe3O4-MSNs were then modified with poly(2-diethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) brushes using surface-initiated ARGET atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) (Fe3O4@MSN-PDMAEMA). Since the charge of PDEAEMA is externally regulated by solution pH, tertiary amines in the polymer chains were quaternized using 2-iodoethanol to obtain cationic polymer chains with a permanent positive charge (Fe3O4@MSN-QPDMAEMA). The intensity of the C−O peak in the C1s X-ray photoelectron spectrum increased after reaction with 2-iodoethanol, suggesting that the quaternization process was successful. The applicability of the synthesized materials on the removal of methyl orange (MO), and sunset yellow (E110) dyes from an aqueous solution was examined. The effects of pH, contact time, and initial dyes concentrations on the removal performance were investigated by batch experiments. The results showed that the Fe3O4@MSN-PDMAEMA sample exhibited a weak adsorption performance toward both MO and E110, compared with Fe3O4@MSN-QPDMAEMA at a pH level above 5. The maximum adsorption capacities of MO and E110 using Fe3O4@MSN-QPDMAEMA were 294 mg g−1 and 194.8 mg g−1, respectively.

We show that an SnO2-based water-gate thin film transistor (WGTFT) biosensor responds to a waterborne analyte, the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, by a parallel potentiometric and capacitive mechanism. We draw our conclusion from an analysis of transistor output characteristics, which avoids the known ambiguities of the common analysis based on transfer characteristics. Our findings contrast with reports on organic WGTFT biosensors claiming a purely capacitive response due to screening effects in high ionic strength electrolytes, but are consistent with prior work that clearly shows a potentiometric response even in strong electrolytes. We provide a detailed critique of prior WGTFT analysis and screening reasoning. Empirically, both potentiometric and capacitive responses can be modelled quantitatively by a Langmuir‒Freundlich (LF) law, which is mathematically equivalent to the Hill equation that is frequently used for biosensor response characteristics. However, potentiometric and capacitive model parameters disagree. Instead, the potentiometric response follows the Nikolsky-Eisenman law, treating the analyte ‘RBD spike protein’ as an ion carrying two elementary charges. These insights are uniquely possible thanks to the parallel presence of two response mechanisms, as well as their reliable delineation, as presented here.

This paper introduces the synthesis of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with three different groups such as amine, thiol, and sulfonic acid, along the internal surface. Trimethyl[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ammonium chloride was used to modify the external surface of the nanomaterials. Such materials allow control of the drug release from MSN pores. Multifunctional MSNs were loaded with doxycycline (Doxy) to study their capacities and uploading time. The loading profile indicates that sulfonic groups in the internal surface were the most efficient surfaces with a loading capacity of ca. 35% in 90 min in acidic media.

The presence of pharmaceutical compounds in the environment is problem for human health worldwide. Paracetamol is one of the pharmaceutical compounds that is widely used as a pain reliever and fever reducer, and it has been discharged in water via industrial and domestic wastewater. This study aimed to improve the removal of paracetamol from aqueous solutions using two different amino-acid-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). Two types of adsorbents were used: the surfaces of epoxy-modified MSNs were modified with glycine (MSN-Gly) and cysteine (MSN-Cys). Topographical images indicated that the size of fabricated nanoparticles ranged between 220 and 360 nm, with a pore size of ~5 nm. IR spectra confirmed the successful attachment of amino acids on MSN surfaces as a peak appeared at ~1720 cm−1, indicating a carbonyl group. A series of experiments were performed using the batch adsorption method to investigate the effects of contact time, initial concentration of the adsorbate, and pH on the removal of paracetamol from the aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity of paracetamol was higher in acidic media for both adsorbents. The maximum adsorbed amount of paracetamol was 300 mg/g for MSN-Gly compared with 250 mg/g for MSN-Cys. For both adsorbents and at all pH values, the experimental data were well matched with the pseudo-second order and the adsorption isotherm was fitted using a Temkin model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
