OBJECTIVE: ADHD is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. Impairments in executive functioning (EF) are central to models of ADHD, while alpha-band spectral power event-related decreases (ERD) have emerged as a putative electroencephalography (EEG) biomarker of EF in ADHD. Little is known about the roles of EF and alpha ERD and their interactions with symptoms of ADHD. METHOD: We estimated network models of ADHD symptoms and integrated alpha ERD measures into the symptom network. RESULTS: EF emerges as a bridge network node connecting alpha ERD and the hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention symptoms. We found that EF most closely relates to a subset of symptoms, namely the motoric symptoms, seat (difficulty staying seated), and runs (running or climbing excessively). CONCLUSIONS: EF functions as a bridge node connecting alpha ERD and the ADHD symptom network. Motoric-type symptoms and EF deficits may constitute important nodes in the interplay between behavior/symptoms, cognition, and neurophysiological markers of ADHD.

Purpose: To evaluate and compare the changes in brain activity for individuals with a single missing mandibular molar replaced with a removable dental prosthesis (RPD) and a fixed tooth-supported implant prosthesis in the static and postmasticatory phases. Materials and Methods: In total, 24 patients with a unilateral missing mandibular first molar were rehabilitated with a removable dental prosthesis and divided into two groups of 12 each; Group A was rehabilitated with implants and Group B with 3-unit toothsupported fixed partial dentures (FPDs). An electroencephalogram (EEG) was taken during the three phases of assessment: (1) before insertion of any prosthesis (N0), (2) after insertion of an RPD (N1), and (3) after cementation of an FPD or implant crown (F2). The effect of bite force with RPD (N1M) and FPD or implant prosthesis (F2M) on alpha waves was evaluated by recording EEG immediately after chewing gum for 30 seconds. Results: The improvement of the amplitude of alpha waves before and after prosthesis insertion showed a significant difference between Group As and B (P < .05) with the highest mean values of 158.3 µV, 147.9 µV, and 182.1 µV occurring in pairs F2-N0, F2-N1, and F2M-N1M, respectively, for Group A. Similarly, for the power of alpha waves between group A and B, a statistically significant difference (P < .05) with the highest mean values of 30.3 dB, 28.9 dB, 36.9 dB, and 11.2 dB in pairs F2-N0, F2-N1, F2M-N1M, and F2M-F2, respectively, was observed for Group A. There was no statistically significant increase in pair N0-N1 (P > .05). Conclusions: Replacement of a single missing tooth enhanced brain activity and was highest with an implant-supported crown. Background: Binge eating (BE) is associated with a range of cognitive control deficits related to impulsivity, including lower response inhibition, preference for immediate gratification, and maladaptive decision-making. The aim was to investigate whether impulsivity and BE may interact with the decision process and underlying brain activity in outpatients with overweight or obesity who are starting a treatment to achieve weight loss. Methods: A sample of 26 treatment-seeking outpatients with overweight or obesity was evaluated for impulsivity, BE, and temporal discounting rates. Impulsivity was measured with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), according to which two groups were composed: high BIS and low BIS; BE was assessed with the eating disorders module of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM5—Research Version, according to which two groups were composed: with (BE group) or without BE (NBE group). Changes in subjective value of rewards were measured with the Temporal Discounting Task (TDt) where participants had to choice between sooner but smaller vs. later but larger monetary rewards. These choices were made in two differently delayed conditions ("Now" and "Not-now"). Brain rhythms were recorded through high-density electroencephalogram (hd-EEG) during the TDt. Results: Patients with BE reported more impulsive tendencies and perceived sooner rewards as more gratifying when both options were delayed (Not-now condition, p = 0.02). The reward choice in the TDt was accompanied by a general EEG alpha band desynchronization in parietal areas observed without differences between experimental conditions and patients groups. No effects were observed within the Now condition or in the other EEG bands. Conclusions: The tendency to favor immediate rewards may constitute an obstacle to adhering to treatment plans and achieving weight loss goals for outpatients with overweight or obesity. Clinicians are therefore encouraged to include psychological factors, such as impulsivity and dysfunctional eating behaviors, when designing weight loss programs. By addressing these psychological aspects, clinicians can better support patients in overcoming barriers to adherence and achieving sustainable weight loss. An observational and retrospective study was carried out to analyse HCoV positivity from a multiplex PCR respiratory panel and RT‐PCR for SARS‐CoV‐2 in respiratory samples from 1 June 2020 to 31 July 2023 at the Príncipe de Asturias University Hospital (HUPA) in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain. Out of 2802 respiratory panels, 1258 (44.8%) turned out positive. HCoV was detected in 114 (4%) cases (range 0–23; median 1.5; IQR 0–3.75) with positivity rates ranging from 0% to 14%. All four variants of HCoV circulated, and OC‐43 was the most common in 62.3% of cases. After the onset of the pandemic, the HCoV season was delayed 22 weeks, with a peak positivity of 9% in the summer of 2021, showing an inverse relationship with the alpha and delta waves of SARS‐CoV‐2. In the two subsequent autumn–winter seasons, HCoV positivity increased (11–14%) with a reduction in the summer of 2022 and 2023 following the emergence of the omicron variant and the relaxation of social distancing measures. The seasonal spread pattern of endemic HCoV might be returning to normal in our region and likely in other temperate zones of the northern hemisphere after 3 years of the pandemic. Mosquito coil is commonly used in many African households for protection against mosquito bites. The coil usually has semi‐volatile pyrethroids as an active ingredient, which usually diffuse across open space, and the cloud either kills mosquitoes that are exposed, or mosquitoes can be exposed to sublethal doses of the insecticides. This study was conducted to assess the impact of sublethal doses of mosquito coil on the development of insecticide resistance in Aedes aegypti, a major vector for dengue fever and several other arboviral diseases. A laboratory colony of Ae. aegypti was exposed to sublethal doses of a meperfluthrin‐based mosquito coil in a Peet‐Grady chamber once per generation for 16 generations. The susceptibility of the exposed colony to a diagnostic dose of the mosquito coil as well as to three other insecticides was determined. Three different kdr mutations and five enzyme activities were evaluated in both the exposed and control colonies. After 16 generations of sublethal exposure to mosquito coils, the full diagnostic dose of the coil caused 68% mortality to the exposed colony compared to 100% mortality in the control colony. Mortality caused by deltamethrin (0.05%) was also significantly lower in the exposed colony. The frequency of 1016I kdr mutation as well as MFO and alpha esterase activities were higher in the exposed colony compared to the control colony. This study provides evidence of the development of pyrethroid resistance in an Ae. aegypti population due to sublethal exposure to mosquito coil for 16 generations. Given the large‐scale use of mosquito coils in many African households, its role as a pyrethroid resistance selection source should be taken into consideration when designing resistance management strategies. Auditory beats stimulation (ABS) has received increased attention for its potential to modulate neural oscillations through a phenomenon described as brain entrainment (i.e synchronization of brain's electrocortical activity to external stimuli at a specific frequency). Recently, a new form of ABS has emerged, inspired by isochronic tones stimulation (IT d). This study investigated neural oscillatory responses induced by IT d in comparison with formerly well-established ABS protocols, such as gamma-binaural beats (BB) and white noise (WN). We recorded the electroencephalographic brain activity in 28 participants during 4 min of BB, IT d , and WN presentation. Data demonstrated that while both BB and WN enhanced oscillatory power on the EEG gamma band, consistently with the expected brain entrainment effect, IT d yielded greater changes in EEG power (p < 0.001). This was confirmed by time-based analysis, which showed a progressive increase in normalized EEG power within the IT d window compared to BB (p < 0.05). Findings also revealed that IT d elicited acute changes in the alpha band of EEG oscillations, through a progressive decrease in power over time, which was distinctly different from the pattern observed while listening BB and WN. Such dual alpha-gamma effects underline the promising and unique potential of IT d to modulate neural oscillations which selectively differ from BB and WN. Adaptive behaviors require the ability to resolve conflicting information caused by the processing of incompatible sensory inputs. Prominent theories of attention have posited that early selective attention helps mitigate cognitive interference caused by conflicting sensory information by facilitating the processing of task-relevant sensory inputs and filtering out behaviorally irrelevant information. Surprisingly, many recent studies that investigated the role of early selective attention on conflict mitigation have failed to provide positive evidence. Here, we examined changes in the selectivity of early visuospatial attention in male and female human subjects performing an attention-cueing Eriksen flanker task, where they discriminated the shape of a visual target surrounded by congruent or incongruent distractors. We used the inverted encoding model to reconstruct spatial representations of visual selective attention from the topographical patterns of amplitude modulations in alpha band oscillations in scalp EEG (∼8-12 Hz). We found that the fidelity of the alpha-based spatial reconstruction was significantly higher in the incongruent compared with the congruent condition. Importantly, these conflict-related modulations in the reconstruction fidelity occurred at a much earlier time window than those of the lateralized posterior event-related potentials associated with target selection and distractor suppression processes, as well as conflict-related modulations in the frontocentral negative-going wave and midline-frontal theta oscillations (∼3-7 Hz), thought to track executive control functions. Taken together, our data suggest that conflict resolution is supported by the cascade of neural processes underlying early selective visuospatial attention and frontal executive functions that unfold over time. Recently, there has been a resurgence in experimental and conceptual efforts to understand how brain rhythms can serve to organize visual information. Oscillations can provide temporal structure for neuronal processing and form a basis for integrating information across brain areas. Here, we use a bistable paradigm and a data‐driven approach to test the hypothesis that oscillatory modulations associate with the integration or segregation of visual elements. Spectral signatures of perception of bound and unbound configurations of visual moving stimuli were studied using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in ambiguous and unambiguous conditions. Using a 2 × 2 design, we were able to isolate correlates from visual integration, either perceptual or stimulus‐driven, from attentional and ambiguity‐related activity. Two frequency bands were found to be modulated by visual integration: an alpha/beta frequency and a higher frequency gamma‐band. Alpha/beta power was increased in several early visual cortical and dorsal visual areas during visual integration, while gamma‐band power was surprisingly increased in the extrastriate visual cortex during segregation. This points to an integrative role for alpha/beta activity, likely from top‐down signals maintaining a single visual representation. On the other hand, when more representations have to be processed in parallel gamma‐band activity is increased, which is at odds with the notion that gamma oscillations are related to perceptual coherence. These modulations were confirmed in intracranial EEG recordings and partially originate from distinct brain areas. Our MEG and stereo‐EEG data confirms predictions of binding mechanisms depending on low‐frequency activity for long‐range integration and for organizing visual processing while refuting a straightforward correlation between gamma‐activity and perceptual binding. Brain dynamics associated with design creativity tasks are largely unexplored. Despite significant strides, there is a limited understanding of the brainbehavior during design creation tasks. The objective of this paper is to review the concepts of creativity and design creativity as well as their differences, and to explore the brain dynamics associated with design creativity tasks using electroencephalography (EEG) as a neuroimaging tool. The paper aims to provide essential insights for future researchers in the field of design creativity neurocognition. It seeks to examine fundamental studies, present key findings, and initiate a discussion on associated brain dynamics. The review employs thematic analysis and a forward and backward snowball search methodology with specific inclusion and exclusion criteria to select relevant studies. This search strategy ensured a comprehensive review focused on EEG-based creativity and design creativity experiments. Different components of those experiments such as participants, psychometrics, experiment design, and creativity tasks, are reviewed and then discussed. The review identifies that while some studies have converged on specific findings regarding EEG alpha band activity in creativity experiments, there remain inconsistencies in the literature. The paper underscores the need for further research to unravel the interplays between these cognitive processes. This comprehensive review serves as a valuable resource for readers seeking an understanding of current literature, principal discoveries, and areas where knowledge remains incomplete. Predictive coding theory suggests the brain anticipates sensory information using prior knowledge. While this theory has been extensively researched within individual sensory modalities, evidence for predictive processing across sensory modalities is limited. Here, we examine how crossmodal knowledge is represented and learned in the brain, by identifying the hierarchical networks underlying crossmodal predictions when information of one sensory modality leads to a prediction in another modality. We record electroencephalogram (EEG) during a crossmodal audiovisual local-global oddball paradigm, in which the predictability of transitions between tones and images are manipulated at both the stimulus and sequence levels. To dissect the complex predictive signals in our EEG data, we employed a model-fitting approach to untangle neural interactions across modalities and hierarchies. The model-fitting result demonstrates that audiovisual integration occurs at both the levels of individual stimulus interactions and multi-stimulus sequences. Furthermore, we identify the spatio-spectro-temporal signatures of prediction-error signals across hierarchies and modalities, and reveal that auditory and visual prediction errors are rapidly redirected to the central-parietal electrodes during learning through alpha-band interactions. Our study suggests a crossmodal predictive coding mechanism where unimodal predictions are processed by distributed brain networks to form crossmodal knowledge. Individuals grappling with severe central nervous system injuries often face significant challenges related to sensorimotor function and communication abilities. In response, brain–computer interface (BCI) technology has emerged as a promising solution by offering innovative interaction methods and intelligent rehabilitation training. By leveraging electroencephalographic (EEG) signals, BCIs unlock intriguing possibilities in patient care and neurological rehabilitation. Recent research has utilized covariance matrices as signal descriptors. In this study, we introduce two methodologies for covariance matrix analysis: multiple tangent space projections (M-TSPs) and Cholesky decomposition. Both approaches incorporate a classifier that integrates linear and nonlinear features, resulting in a significant enhancement in classification accuracy, as evidenced by meticulous experimental evaluations. The M-TSP method demonstrates superior performance with an average accuracy improvement of 6.79% over Cholesky decomposition. Additionally, a gender-based analysis reveals a preference for men in the obtained results, with an average improvement of 9.16% over women. These findings underscore the potential of our methodologies to improve BCI performance and highlight gender-specific performance differences to be examined further in our future studies. This research aimed to determine the activity concentration of 226Ra in the natural radioactivity of the surface water of the Maritsa River, Türkiye. The gamma spectrometric analysis was conducted by using 3′′ × 3′′ NaI(Tl) and (HPGe) detector. Since the direct measurement method could not acquire reliable results, the mean activity concentration of 226Ra was calculated as 0.62 Bq L−1 with the "standard addition method". The mean values of the gross alpha/beta activities and the total radium alpha activity concentration were measured. The results are 0.013 Bq L−1, 0.304 Bq L−1, and 0.014 Bq L−1 respectively. Purpose: The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of brainwave entrainment on pre-operative fear and anxiety in pediatric dental patients. Methods: The study protocol received approval from the Institutional Ethical Committee under reference number 3010/IEC/2021. Pediatric patients (252) aged from 7 to 12 years, who reported to the dental department were randomized pre-operatively and presented either with brainwave entrainment (experimental), delivered using a "David delight plus device" or a standard behavior management protocol (control). Baseline and post-assessment of anxiety and fear levels were done using the Visual Facial Anxiety Scale and Frankl's behavior rating scale with Wright's modification. Vitals such as blood pressure and pulse rate were also measured. Results: The study sample (n = 252) comprised 118 females and 134 males. The non-significant differences for values of (VFAS1, FRS1, HR1, and BP1) indicated similar baseline characteristics. In the brainwave entrainment group, the p values of the Mann–Whitney U test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test (p < 0.01) between the two-timepoints indicated a statistical difference for the values of (VFAS1, FBRS1, HR1, BP1) and (VFAS2, FBRS2, HR2, BP2). Conclusions: Brainwave entrainment effectively reduces pre-operative fear and anxiety in pediatric dental patients. Our study aimed to verify the possibilities of effectively applying chronnectomics methods to reconstruct the dynamic processes of network transition between three types of brain states, namely, eyes-closed rest, eyes-open rest, and a task state. The study involved dense EEG recordings and reconstruction of the source-level time-courses of the signals. Functional connectivity was measured using the phase lag index, and dynamic analyses concerned coupling strength and variability in alpha and beta frequencies. The results showed significant and dynamically specific transitions regarding processes of eyes opening and closing and during the eyes-closed-to-task transition in the alpha band. These observations considered a global dimension, default mode network, and central executive network. The decrease of connectivity strength and variability that accompanied eye-opening was a faster process than the synchronization increase during eye-opening, suggesting that these two transitions exhibit different reorganization times. While referring the obtained results to network studies, it was indicated that the scope of potential similarities and differences between rest and task-related networks depends on whether the resting state was recorded in eyes closed or open condition. Introduction: During general anesthesia, frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) activity in the alpha frequency band (8-12 Hz) correlates with the adequacy of analgesia. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and auditory stimulation, two noninvasive neuromodulation techniques, can entrain alpha activity in awake or sleeping patients. This study evaluates their effects on alpha oscillations in patients under general anesthesia. Methods: 30 patients receiving general anesthesia for surgery were enrolled in this two-by-two randomized clinical trial. Each participant received active or sham tDCS followed by auditory stimulation or silence according to assigned group (TDCS/AUD, TDCS/SIL, SHAM/AUD, SHAM/SIL). Frontal EEG was recorded before and after neuromodulation. Patients with burst suppression, mid-study changes in anesthetic, or incomplete EEG recordings were excluded from analysis. The primary outcome was post-stimulation change in oscillatory alpha power, compared in each intervention group against the change in the control group SHAM/SIL by Wilcoxon Rank Sum testing. Results: All 30 enrolled participants completed the study. Of the 22 included for analysis, 8 were in TDCS/AUD, 4 were in TDCS/SIL, 5 were in SHAM/AUD, and 5 were in SHAM/SIL. The median change in oscillatory alpha power was +4.7 dB (IQR 4.4, 5.8 dB) in SHAM/SIL, +2.8 dB (IQR 1.5, 8.9 dB) in TDCS/SIL (p = 0.730), +5.5 dB in SHAM/AUD (p=0.421), and-6.1 dB (IQR -10.2, -2.2dB) inTDCS/AUD(p=0.045). Conclusion: tDCS and auditory stimulation can be administered safely intraoperatively. However, these interventions did not increase alpha power as administered and measured in this pilot study. Electrocorticography is an established neural interfacing technique wherein an array of electrodes enables large-area recording from the cortical surface. Electrocorticography is commonly used for seizure mapping however the implantation of large-area electrocorticography arrays is a highly invasive procedure, requiring a craniotomy larger than the implant area to place the device. In this work, flexible thin-film electrode arrays are combined with concepts from soft robotics, to realize a large-area electrocorticography device that can change shape via integrated fluidic actuators. We show that the 32-electrode device can be packaged using origami-inspired folding into a compressed state and implanted through a small burr-hole craniotomy, then expanded on the surface of the brain for large-area cortical coverage. The implantation, expansion, and recording functionality of the device is confirmed in-vitro and in porcine in-vivo models. The integration of shape actuation into neural implants provides a clinically viable pathway to realize large-area neural interfaces via minimally invasive surgical techniques. Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is an autoimmune condition affecting the eyes, characterized by proptosis, extraocular muscle involvement, and in severe cases, vision impairment including diplopia, optic neuropathy, and potential blindness. The exact etiology of TAO remains elusive; however, increased oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant capacity are pivotal in its pathogenesis. Elevated oxidative stress not only directly damages orbital tissues but also influences thyroid function and autoimmune responses, exacerbating tissue destruction. This review explores the role of oxidative stress in TAO, elucidates its mechanisms, and evaluates the efficacy and limitations of antioxidant therapies in managing TAO. Electroencephalography (EEG) wearable devices are particularly suitable for monitoring a subject's engagement while performing daily cognitive tasks. EEG information provided by wearable devices varies with the location of the electrodes, the suitable location of which can be obtained using standard multi-channel EEG recorders. Cognitive engagement can be assessed during working memory (WM) tasks, testing the mental ability to process information over a short period of time. WM could be impaired in patients with epilepsy. This study aims to evaluate the cognitive engagement of nine patients with epilepsy, coming from a public dataset by Boran et al., during a verbal WM task and to identify the most suitable location of the electrodes for this purpose. Cognitive engagement was evaluated by computing 37 engagement indexes based on the ratio of two or more EEG rhythms assessed by their spectral power. Results show that involvement index trends follow changes in cognitive engagement elicited by the WM task, and, overall, most changes appear most pronounced in the frontal regions, as observed in healthy subjects. Therefore, involvement indexes can reflect cognitive status changes, and frontal regions seem to be the ones to focus on when designing a wearable mental involvement monitoring EEG system, both in physiological and epileptic conditions. The pervasive nature of short-form video platforms has seamlessly integrated into daily routines, yet it is important to recognize their potential adverse effects on both physical and mental health. Prior research has identified a detrimental impact of excessive short-form video consumption on attentional behavior, but the underlying neural mechanisms remain unexplored. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the effect of short-form video use on attentional functions, measured through the attention network test (ANT). A total of 48 participants, consisting of 35 females and 13 males, with a mean age of 21.8 years, were recruited. The mobile phone short video addiction tendency questionnaire (MPSVATQ) and self-control scale (SCS) were conducted to assess the short video usage behavior and self-control ability. Electroencephalogram (EEG) data were recorded during the completion of the ANT task. The correlation analysis showed a significant negative relationship between MPSVATQ and theta power index reflecting the executive control in the prefrontal region (r = -0.395, p = 0.007), this result was not observed by using theta power index of the resting-state EEG data. Furthermore, a significant negative correlation was identified between MPSVATQ and SCS outcomes (r = -0.320, p = 0.026). These results suggest that an increased tendency toward mobile phone short video addiction could negatively impact self-control and diminish executive control within the realm of attentional functions. This study sheds light on the adverse consequences stemming from short video consumption and underscores the importance of developing interventions to mitigate short video addiction. Investigations in Wistar Albino Glaxo from Rijswijk (WAG/Rij) rats that are susceptible to genetic absence epilepsy have demonstrated that environmental modifications affect absence seizures. Previously, we showed that neonatal tactile stimulations produce disease-modifying effect on genetically determined absence epilepsy and associated depression in Wag/Rij rats. The study presented here examined the effect of TS during late ontogenesis (adolescence and young adulthood) on epilepsy and depression outcomes in this genetically epileptic rat strain. On postnatal day (PND) 38, male WAG/Rij rats randomly were assigned to either the tactile stimulation (TS), handled or control group (unhandled) with 8 animals in each group. Following a 7-day adaptation period to their new surroundings, the animals were submitted to tactile stimulation from PND 45 to PND 90, five days per week, for 5  min daily. The tactile-stimulated rat was removed from its cage, placed on the experimenter’s lap, and had its neck and back gently stroked by the researcher. The handled rats were taken to another cage and left alone for 5  min daily from PND 45 to PND 90. The control rats were left undisturbed in their home cage, except for regular cage cleaning. After PND 90, all rats were left undisturbed until behavioral testing and EEG recording. When the animals were 7  months old, they were subjected to the sucrose consumption test (SCT) and the forced swimming test (FST). Electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings were made at 8  months of age in order to measure electroencephalographic seizure activity, thus, the spike– wave discharges (SWDs). Tactile-stimulated rats showed increased sucrose consumption and number of approaches to the sucrose solution in the SCT when compared with the handled and control rats. In the FST, rats in TS group showed lower immobility time and greater immobility latency, active swimming time and diving frequency than the handled and control rats. Large scale retrospective studies have shown an association between schizophrenia and risk of violence. Overall, this increase in risk is small and does not justify or support stigmatizing public perceptions or media depictions of people with schizophrenia. Nonetheless, in some situations, some symptoms of schizophrenia can increase the risk of violent behavior. Prediction of this behavior would allow high impact preventive interventions. However, to date the neurobiological correlates of violent behavior in schizophrenia are not well understood, precluding the development of prognostic biomarkers. We used electroencephalography to measure alpha activity and microstates from 31 patients with schizophrenia and 18 age matched controls. Participants also completed multiple assessments of current aggressive tendencies and their lifetime history of aggressive acts. We found that individual alpha peak frequency was negatively correlated with aggression scores in both patients and controls (largest Spearman's r = −0.45). Furthermore, this result could be replicated in data taken from a single frontal channel suggesting that this may be possible to obtain in routine clinical settings (largest Spearman's r = −0.40). We also found that transitions between microstates corresponding to auditory and visual networks were inversely correlated with aggression scores. Finally, we found that, within patients, aggression was correlated with the degree of randomness between microstate transitions. This suggests that aggression is related to inappropriate switching between large scale brain networks and subsequent failure to appropriately integrate complicated environmental and internal stimuli. Mirror Visual Feedback (MVF)-induced illusion of hand movements produces beneficial effects in patients with chronic pain. However, neurophysiological mechanisms underlying these effects are poorly known. In this preliminary study, we test the novel hypothesis that such an MVF-induced movement illusion may exert its effects by changing the activity in midline cortical areas associated with pain processing. Electrical stimuli with individually fixed intensity were applied to the left hand of healthy adults to produce painful and non-painful sensations during unilateral right-hand movements with such an MVF illusion and right and bilateral hand movements without MVF. During these events, electroencephalographic (EEG) activity was recorded from 64 scalp electrodes. Event-related desynchronization (ERD) of EEG alpha rhythms (8–12 Hz) indexed the neurophysiological oscillatory mechanisms inducing cortical activation. Compared to the painful sensations, the non-painful sensations were specifically characterized by (1) lower alpha ERD estimated in the cortical midline, angular gyrus, and lateral parietal regions during the experimental condition with MVF and (2) higher alpha ERD estimated in the lateral prefrontal and parietal regions during the control conditions without MVF. These preliminary results suggest that the MVF-induced movement illusion may affect nociception and neurophysiological oscillatory mechanisms, reducing the activation in cortical limbic and default mode regions. In this study, we investigated the cognitive mechanisms underlying action anticipation in volleyball players, especially concerned with the differences between experts and amateurs. Participants included both expert (male, N = 26) and amateur (male, N = 23) volleyball players, who were asked to predict spiking movements containing high, medium, and low levels of kinematic information while their electrophysiological activities were recorded. The high-information stimuli included the whole spiking action, the medium-information stimuli ended at 120 ms, and the low-information stimuli ended at 160 ms before hand–ball contact. The results showed that experts significantly outperformed amateurs in both prediction accuracy (68% in experts vs. 55% in amateurs) and reaction time (475.09 ms in experts vs. 725.81 ms in amateurs) under the medium-information condition. Analysis of alpha rhythm activity revealed that experts exhibited the strongest desynchronization under the low-information condition, suggesting increased attentional engagement. In contrast, amateurs showed the weakest desynchronization under the medium-information condition. Furthermore, mu rhythm activity analysis showed greater desynchronization in the duration of 100–300 ms before hand–ball contact for experts, correlating with their higher anticipation accuracy. These findings highlight the significant kinematic information-processing abilities of volleyball experts and elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying efficient attentional engagement and mirroring. Electroencephalography (EEG) remains pivotal in neuroscience for its non-invasive exploration of brain activity, yet traditional electrodes are plagued with artifacts and the application of conductive paste poses practical challenges. Tripolar concentric ring electrode (TCRE) sensors used for EEG (tEEG) attenuate artifacts automatically, improving the signal quality. Hydrogel tapes offer a promising alternative to conductive paste, providing mess-free application and reliable electrode–skin contact in locations without hair. Since the electrodes of the TCRE sensors are only 1.0 mm apart, the impedance of the skin-to-electrode impedance-matching medium is critical. This study evaluates four hydrogel tapes' efficacies in EEG electrode application, comparing impedance and alpha wave characteristics. Healthy adult participants underwent tEEG recordings using different tapes. The results highlight varying impedances and successful alpha wave detection despite increased tape-induced impedance. Schizophrenia is accompanied by aberrant interactions of intrinsic brain networks. However, the modulatory effect of electroencephalography (EEG) rhythms on the functional connectivity (FC) in schizophrenia remains unclear. This study aims to provide new insight into network communication in schizophrenia by integrating FC and EEG rhythm information. After collecting simultaneous resting-state EEG-functional magnetic resonance imaging data, the effect of rhythm modulations on FC was explored using what we term "dynamic rhythm information." We also investigated the synergistic relationships among three networks under rhythm modulation conditions, where this relationship presents the coupling between two brain networks with other networks as the center by the rhythm modulation. This study found FC between the thalamus and cortical network regions was rhythm-specific. Further, the effects of the thalamus on the default mode network (DMN) and salience network (SN) were less similar under alpha rhythm modulation in schizophrenia patients than in controls (m e a n S c Z : m e a n H C = 0. 7 1 5 : 0. 7 7 7). EEG was taken for each volunteer twice, before drinking rosemary extract and around one hour after drinking it. EEG information was recorded with a Micromed recording framework inspecting rate of 512 Hz. EEG signals were prepared to be utilized in EEGLAB, an open-source toolbox within the MATLAB environment. The information obtained after the EEG recording was compared with the preliminary EEG information.The signal’s power spectral density in theta, delta, and beta frequency bands modestly increased in males and females. Even though there was a significant increase in power at the alpha frequency band in both sexes, this increment was not specific channel-wise.The obtained data are consistent with the expected results and similar studies conducted, suggesting that the consumption of rosemary is beneficial for cognitive function in the short term. The goal of stroke rehabilitation is to establish a robust protocol for patients to live independently in community. Firstly, we examined the impact of 3 hybridized transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)-mirror therapy interventions on activities of daily life (ADL) in stroke patients. Secondly, we explored the underlying therapeutic mechanisms with theory-driven electroencephalography (EEG) indexes in the alpha band. This was achieved by identifying the unique contributions of alpha power in motor production to ADL in relation to the premotor cortex (PMC), primary cortex (M1), and Sham tDCS with mirror therapy. The results showed that, although post-intervention ADL improvement was comparable among the three tDCS groups, one of the EEG indexes differentiated the interventions. Neural-behavioral correlation analyses revealed that different types of ADL improvements consistently corresponded with alpha power in the temporal lobe exclusively in the PMC tDCS group (all rs > 0.39). By contrast, alterations in alpha power in the central-frontal region were found to vary, with ADL primarily in the M1 tDCS group (r = −0.6 or 0.7), with the benefit depending on the complexity of the ADL. In conclusion, this research suggested two potential therapeutic mechanisms and demonstrated the additive benefits of introducing theory-driven neural indexes in explaining ADL. Infectious challenge can trigger alterations in sleep–wake behavior. Accumulating evidence has shown that the serine/threonine kinases Akt1 and Akt2 are important targets in both physiological and infectious signaling processes. However, the involvement of Akt1 and Akt2 in sleep–wake activity under basal conditions and in response to inflammatory stimulation has not been established. In the present study, we assessed the precise role of Akt1 and Akt2 in sleep–wake behavior using electroencephalography (EEG)/electromyography (EMG) data from Akt1- and Akt2-deficient mice and wild-type (WT) mice. The results showed that both Akt1 and Akt2 deficiency affect sleep–wake activity, as indicated by reduced nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and increased wakefulness in mutant mice compared to WT mice. Sleep amount and intensity (delta, theta and alpha activity) at night were also drastically attenuated in Akt1- and Akt2-deficient mice. Moreover, since Akt1 and Akt2 are involved in immune responses, we assessed their roles in the sleep response to the inflammatory stimulus lipopolysaccharide (LPS) throughout the following 24 h. We observed that the decrease in wakefulness and increase in NREM sleep induced by LPS were restored in Akt1 knockout mice but not in Akt2 knockout mice. Correspondingly, the decrease in the number of positive orexin-A neurons induced by LPS was abrogated in Akt1 knockout mice but not in Akt2 knockout mice. Our results revealed that both Akt1 and Akt2 deficiency affect the sleep response under basal conditions, but only Akt1 deficiency protects against the aberrant changes in sleep behavior induced by peripheral immune challenge. Walking can have a positive impact on cognitive function in adolescents. This study aimed to compare the effects of walking with sneakers and barefoot on cognitive ability in adolescents. Fifty-nine adolescent male students were included in the study and assigned to the control (n = 20), sneaker (n = 19), and barefoot (n = 20) groups. The barefoot and sneakers group performed a 40-min walking exercise four times a week for 12 weeks during the morning physical activity time, while the control group performed self-study. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and brain activity variables were measured before and after the exercise program. The results showed that after 12 weeks, the barefoot group had a significant decrease in Gamma and H-beta waves and a significant increase in sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) and Alpha waves. Conversely, the control group showed a significant decrease in SMR waves and increase in Theta waves. The sneaker group showed a significant decrease in SMR waves alone. In an eyes-open resting state, the barefoot group showed a significant increase in H-beta, M-beta, SMR, and Alpha waves. The barefoot group also had a significant increase in cognitive speed and concentration and a significant decrease in brain stress. Taken together, barefoot walking can effectively enhance cognitive ability in adolescents, as demonstrated by the significant variation in EEG activity. The face of a humanoid robot can affect the user experience, and the detection of face preference is particularly important. Preference detection belongs to a branch of emotion recognition that has received much attention from researchers. Most of the previous preference detection studies have been conducted based on a single modality. In this paper, we detect face preferences of humanoid robots based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and eye movement signals for single modality, canonical correlation analysis fusion modality, and bimodal deep autoencoder (BDAE) fusion modality, respectively. We validated the theory of frontal asymmetry by analyzing the preference patterns of EEG and found that participants had higher alpha wave energy for preference faces. In addition, hidden preferences extracted by EEG signals were better classified than preferences from participants' subjective feedback, and also, the classification performance of eye movement data was improved. Finally, experimental results showed that BDAE multimodal fusion using frontal alpha and beta power spectral densities and eye movement information as features performed best, with the highest average accuracy of 83.13% for the SVM and 71.09% for the KNN. One of the main tasks of the human visual system is to organize the temporal flow of visual events into meaningful patterns. It has been suggested that segregation/integration of continuous visual stimuli relies on temporal windows that are phase-locked to brain oscillations in the alpha frequency range (~10 Hz). From a behavioral point of view, the balance between integration and segregation is reflected in visual temporal acuity: the ability to perceive a small temporal gap between two identical stimuli. Disruption of this balance may lead to impairment of perceptual organization processes. Notably, schizophrenia, a condition characterized by unusual perceptual experiences, has been associated with abnormal temporal processing of sensory stimuli and aberrant oscillations. We asked a large cohort of healthy participants to complete an online version of the two-flash fusion task and two questionnaires for schizotypal personality traits to investigate individual differences in the temporal resolution of perception, particularly its relationship with anomalous perceptual experiences. We found that two-flash discrimination acuity declines with age and that schizotypal traits are associated with better performances. Although this association was strong for perceptual and cognitive subscales, we found that this result could not be attributed to response biases (e.g., hallucination of two flashes). While these results appear to contrast with findings of slower alpha rhythms and sensory processing in schizotypy, we propose that a faster visual rate could be the consequence of an oscillopathy or a disconnection between different sensory modalities and their physiological pacemaker. Past research on gender‐related brain asymmetries in emotions was limited and not univocal. The present study analyzed EEG alpha activity (indexing cortical de‐activation) from 64 scalp sites in 20 women and 20 men during a counterbalanced block presentation of emotional slides and short video‐clips. Stimuli consisted of 45 brief clips of 13 s, divided into 15 erotic (pleasant), 15 neutral and 15 fear (unpleasant) contents. Slides consisted in 45 photo shots (presented for 13 s each) extracted from the videos. As expected, women perceived fear stimuli as more arousing and more unpleasant compared to men. Alpha EEG source analysis revealed gender effects depending on stimulus. Emotional film‐clips elicited in both groups a pattern of greater right than left occipital activation. Instead, emotional pictures activated opposite occipital regions, as women showed greater activation in the left, men in the right hemisphere. Men also showed greater activation to Erotic compared to Fear stimuli (i.e., pictures/clips) in the posterior parietal complex. Results point to the relevance of emotional stimulus type to reveal gender effects: clips are ecological, dynamic and engaging, and forced a unified pattern of emotional responses that reset individual differences. Emotional pictures, less engaging, allowed individual differences to emerge and interact with the stimulus category. Research on gender‐related brain asymmetries is limited and discordant. When memorizing an integrated object such as a Kanizsa figure, the completion of parts into a coherent whole is attained by grouping processes which render a whole‐object representation in visual working memory (VWM). The present study measured event‐related potentials (ERPs) and oscillatory amplitudes to track these processes of encoding and representing multiple features of an object in VWM. To this end, a change detection task was performed, which required observers to memorize both the orientations and colors of six "pacman" items while inducing configurations of the pacmen that systematically varied in terms of their grouping strength. The results revealed an effect of object configuration in VWM despite physically constant visual input: change detection for both orientation and color features was more accurate with increased grouping strength. At the electrophysiological level, the lateralized ERPs and alpha activity mirrored this behavioral pattern. Perception of the orientation features gave rise to the encoding of a grouped object as reflected by the amplitudes of the Ppc. The grouped object structure, in turn, modulated attention to both orientation and color features as indicated by the enhanced N1pc and N2pc. Finally, during item retention, the representation of individual objects and the concurrent allocation of attention to these memorized objects were modulated by grouping, as reflected by variations in the CDA amplitude and a concurrent lateralized alpha suppression, respectively. These results indicate that memorizing multiple features of grouped, to‐be‐integrated objects involves multiple, sequential stages of processing, providing support for a hierarchical model of object representations in VWM. While grouping benefits the storage of object features in visual working memory (VWM), it remains unclear which processes contribute to this benefit. Active sampling in the olfactory domain is a fundamental aspect of mouse behavior, and there is increasing evidence that respiration-entrained neural activity outside of the olfactory system sets an important global brain rhythm. It is therefore crucial to accurately measure breathing during natural behaviors. We develop a new approach to do this in freely moving animals, by implanting a telemetry-based pressure sensor into the right jugular vein, which allows for wireless monitoring of thoracic pressure. After verifying this technique against standard head-fixed respiration measurements, we combined it with EEG and EMG recording and used evolving partial coherence analysis to investigate the relationship between respiration and brain activity across a range of experiments in which the mice could move freely. During voluntary exploration of odors and objects, we found that the association between respiration and cortical activity in the delta and theta frequency range decreased, whereas the association between respiration and cortical activity in the alpha range increased. During sleep, however, the presentation of an odor was able to cause a transient increase in sniffing without changing dominant sleep rhythms (delta and theta) in the cortex. Our data align with the emerging idea that the respiration rhythm could act as a synchronizing scaffold for specific brain rhythms during wakefulness and exploration, but suggest that respiratory changes are less able to impact brain activity during sleep. Combining wireless respiration monitoring with different types of brain recording across a variety of behaviors will further increase our understanding of the important links between active sampling, passive respiration, and neural activity. Non-image forming effects of electric light can be employed to address problems related to individuals' productivity in isolated and confined extreme environments (ICEs). A systematic review and meta-analysis, registered at PROSPERO (Registration ID: CRD 42022326269), were conducted to thoroughly evaluate the efficacy of the daytime artificial light intervention on alertness, cognition, and mood using psychological, cognitive performance, and physiological multimodal measures. Twenty-eight studies were identified after an extensive search scope of major electronic databases including Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO. Results revealed that the use of daytime light interventions significantly improved alertness and cognition, and reduced the alpha wave of electroencephalogram, whereas no significant difference was observed for mood. Subgroup analyses by intervention attribute suggested that light parameters and time characteristics affected the efficacy of diurnal light intervention with varying degrees. Future work investigating the correlation between the two variables is needed to further our understanding of the impact of daytime electric light on human responses. The areas responsible for language and creativity are thought to compete in the brain, which may explain why some people with brain damage suddenly become artists. Originality - or the ability to think of new ideas that do not occur to many people - is the key aspect of creativity. Researchers are trying to determine the mechanism by which originality is established. While creativity is generated by the right hemisphere of the brain, it is suppressed by language-specific processes in the left hemisphere: "Language regions may compete with the right hemisphere's ability to produce creative ideas." This would explain why when areas responsible for language processing are affected, originality appears to increase. A brilliant idea is not enough to qualify a person as creative. Creativity is among the human characteristics whose mysteries we are still trying to understand. It seems almost impossible to find a clear definition for it, and it is equally difficult to look for its origins in the human brain. Many researchers define creativity as a special performance that is both new and appropriate. If we look at creativity as a concept rather than a trait, a number of factors must be considered. For example, an ingenious idea must be realized in such a way that it is visible and useful to others. Only a person who succeeds in this can truly be called creative. Creativity is a complex process that requires the activation of several areas of the brain. So far it is not clear whether creativity requires a specific neural architecture or not. At the root of all thoughts, emotions and behaviors is communication between neurons. Brain waves are the products of synchronized electrical impulses resulting from the communication of masses of neurons. The speed of brain waves is measured in Hz and are divided into categories that delineate slow, moderate and fast waves. They change according to activities or feelings. The electroencephalograph measures brain waves of different frequencies in the brain by using sensors placed on the scalp, the frequency representing the recurrence of a wave in one second. If any of these frequencies are deficient, excessive or difficult to access, psychic performance can suffer. Learning about brain waves and brain wave frequencies is key to understanding how to navigate and reprogram the mind, and to access deeper levels of consciousness. The assessment of 210Po in agricultural soil matrices in different regions of Kerala and Karnataka was studied. The wet ash method was used to find the activity concentration of 210Po. The alpha activity was counted using a silver-activated zinc sulfide counter of 30% efficiency, and the activity was calculated. The average concentration of 210Po activity in soil samples ranged from 0.09 to 20.52 Bq kg−1, with an average value of 4.47 Bq kg−1. The soil texture was measured using the International Pipette method. Using the IBM Statistical Package of Social Science Software, the frequency distribution curve of 210Po is plotted and found to be lognormal. The data of 210Po are highly skewed, and the Kurtosis has a significant positive value. The 210Po activity concentrations are substantially within the World Health Organization's recommended limits. The analysis of brain signals and their properties yields significant insights into the fundamental neural impairments associated with attention bias in individuals suffering from public speaking anxiety (PSA). This study aims to identify electroencephalogram (EEG) and performance biomarkers of attention bias in individuals with public speaking anxiety using the ex-Gaussian modeling technique, frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) and deltabeta correlation (DBC). 12 subjects with high (H) PSA and 12 subjects with low (L) PSA performed the modified emotional stroop task. EEG data were captured using the low-cost 14-channel emotiv Epoc+. Results showed that the ex-Gaussian sigma was higher in the emotional condition in the high public speaking anxiety (HPSA) group, indicating attention bias. The study also found higher right FAA in HPSA compared to LPSA group. There was a negative correlation between s and alpha power in the left region of the brain in the HPSA group, potentially related to attentional bias. Moreover, there was a notable trend towards significantly heightened DBC in the frontal and central regions of the brain among HPSA subjects. In conclusion, in biomedical engineering, the ex-Gaussian model, FAA and DBC are useful because they can identify EEG and performance biomarkers of attention bias in people with PSA. Abstract Background Binge eating (BE) is associated with a range of cognitive control deficits related to impulsivity, including lower response inhibition, preference for immediate gratification, and maladaptive decision-making. The aim was to investigate whether impulsivity and BE may interact with the decision process and underlying brain activity in outpatients with overweight or obesity who are starting a treatment to achieve weight loss. Methods A sample of 26 treatment-seeking outpatients with overweight or obesity was evaluated for impulsivity, BE, and temporal discounting rates. Impulsivity was measured with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), according to which two groups were composed: high BIS and low BIS; BE was assessed with the eating disorders module of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM5—Research Version, according to which two groups were composed: with (BE group) or without BE (NBE group). Changes in subjective value of rewards were measured with the Temporal Discounting Task (TDt) where participants had to choice between sooner but smaller vs. later but larger monetary rewards. These choices were made in two differently delayed conditions (“Now” and “Not-now”). Brain rhythms were recorded through high-density electroencephalogram (hd-EEG) during the TDt. Results Patients with BE reported more impulsive tendencies and perceived sooner rewards as more gratifying when both options were delayed (Not-now condition, p = 0.02). The reward choice in the TDt was accompanied by a general EEG alpha band desynchronization in parietal areas observed without differences between experimental conditions and patients groups. No effects were observed within the Now condition or in the other EEG bands. Conclusions The tendency to favor immediate rewards may constitute an obstacle to adhering to treatment plans and achieving weight loss goals for outpatients with overweight or obesity. Clinicians are therefore encouraged to include psychological factors, such as impulsivity and dysfunctional eating behaviors, when designing weight loss programs. By addressing these psychological aspects, clinicians can better support patients in overcoming barriers to adherence and achieving sustainable weight loss. Impaired visual target detection is a common finding in schizophrenia that is linked to poor functional outcomes. However, the neural mechanisms that contribute to this deficit remain unclear. Recent research in healthy samples has identified relationships between the phase of pre-stimulus electroencephalographic (EEG) activity in the alpha band (8-12 Hz) or theta band (4-7 Hz) and the likelihood of visual target detection with and without attentional cueing, but these effects have not yet been explored in schizophrenia. We performed a study to investigate such effects in schizophrenia (n = 19) and healthy participants (n = 14), using a visual target detection task with attentional cues. We found significant relationships between pre-stimulus EEG phase properties and visual target detection in both groups, but also clear differences in the effects as a function of frequency, group, and attentional cueing. Alpha-band phase effects were relatively uniform across groups and conditions. By contrast, theta-band phase effects showed differences by group and attentional condition which could be consistent with attentional hyperfocusing in the schizophrenia group. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep-aiding music and sleep-related attentional bias based on electroencephalography (EEG) functional connectivity (FC) in patients with insomnia disorder (ID), to evaluate the effectiveness of music in aiding sleep. This study included 30 participants, comprising 15 patients with ID and 15 healthy controls (HCs). Six types of music were selected for sleep aid, and a dot-probe task based on sleep-related attentional bias was utilized to collect behavioral and EEG data. Vigilance bias and disengagement bias were measured using reaction time and EEG FC. Differences in sleep-related attentional bias before and after the intervention of music were explored to evaluate the sleep-aiding effects and identify EEG biomarkers. Compared with HCs, patients with ID showed decreased sleep-related attentional bias of EEG FC between occipital-central and temporal-frontal lobes. Among the six types of music, International Standard Sleep Aid and Lullaby had a greater impact on decreasing vigilance bias in the ID group. Additionally, the International Standard Sleep Aid and Nature Sound were more effective in decreasing disengagement bias in the ID group. This study also examined the resting-state EEG FC of patients with ID before and after the intervention of music. The results showed that the FC in the temporal, frontal, and occipital lobes significantly differed before and after the intervention of music, especially with the use of International Standard Sleep Aid, Lullaby, and Alpha Sound Wave. However, it is worth noting that these three types of music showed no similarities in EEG FC, in contrast to the result of sleep-related attentional bias of EEG FC. This study found that the sleep-related attentional bias of EEG FC has more distinct characteristics when compared to resting-state EEG FC. The results suggest that the sleep-related attentional bias of EEG FC could be a potential biomarker for assessing the sleep-aiding effect of music interventions. Abstract Background Visual snow syndrome is a disorder characterized by the combination of typical perceptual disturbances. The clinical picture suggests an impairment of visual filtering mechanisms and might involve primary and secondary visual brain areas, as well as higher-order attentional networks. On the level of cortical oscillations, the alpha rhythm is a prominent EEG pattern that is involved in the prioritisation of visual information. It can be regarded as a correlate of inhibitory modulation within the visual network. Methods Twenty-one patients with visual snow syndrome were compared to 21 controls matched for age, sex, and migraine. We analysed the resting-state alpha rhythm by identifying the individual alpha peak frequency using a Fast Fourier Transform and then calculating the power spectral density around the individual alpha peak (+/- 1 Hz). We anticipated a reduced power spectral density in the alpha band over the primary visual cortex in participants with visual snow syndrome. Results There were no significant differences in the power spectral density in the alpha band over the occipital electrodes (O1 and O2), leading to the rejection of our primary hypothesis. However, the power spectral density in the alpha band was significantly reduced over temporal and parietal electrodes. There was also a trend towards increased individual alpha peak frequency in the subgroup of participants without comorbid migraine. Conclusions Our main finding was a decreased power spectral density in the alpha band over parietal and temporal brain regions corresponding to areas of the secondary visual cortex. These findings complement previous functional and structural imaging data at a electrophysiological level. They underscore the involvement of higher-order visual brain areas, and potentially reflect a disturbance in inhibitory top-down modulation. The alpha rhythm alterations might represent a novel target for specific neuromodulation. Topsoil samples collected from 58 locations within a 5 × 5 km grid were analysed. Serving as a screening, gross alpha and beta activity measurements were performed using gas-flow proportional counter. Gamma-spectrometric measurements revealed the presence of three natural (40K, 226Ra, 232Th) and one artificial radionuclide (137Cs) in the samples. The activity concentrations of these radionuclides were consistent with the results of similar studies in neighbouring areas. Spatial distribution maps and factor analyses have revealed that the activity concentrations of the natural radionuclides are strongly influenced by geology and have no significant influence from human activities. A correlation of 137Cs activity concentrations with terrain elevation was also observed. The third trimester is a critical period for the development of functional networks that support the lifelong neurocognitive performance, yet the emergence of neuronal coupling in these networks is poorly understood. Here, we used longitudinal high-density electroencephalographic recordings from preterm infants during the period from 33 to 45 weeks of conceptional age (CA) to characterize early spatiotemporal patterns in the development of local cortical function and the intrinsic coupling modes [ICMs; phase– phase (PPCs), amplitude–amplitude (AACs), and phase–amplitude correlations (PACs)]. Absolute local power showed a robust increase with CA across the full frequency spectrum, while local PACs showed sleep state-specific, biphasic development that peaked a few weeks before normal birth. AACs and distant PACs decreased globally at nearly all frequencies. In contrast, the PPCs showed frequency- and region-selective development, with an increase of coupling strength with CA between frontal, central, and occipital regions at low-delta and alpha frequencies together with a wider-spread decrease at other frequencies. Our findings together present the spectrally and spatially differential development of the distinct ICMs during the neonatal period and provide their developmental templates for future basic and clinical research. Alpha oscillations play a vital role in managing the brain's resources, inhibiting neural activity as a function of their phase and amplitude, and are changed in many brain disorders. Developing minimally invasive tools to modulate alpha activity and identifying the parameters that determine its response to exogenous modulators is essential for the implementation of focussed interventions. We introduce Alpha Closed-Loop Auditory Stimulation (αCLAS) as an EEG-based method to modulate and investigate these brain rhythms in humans with specificity and selectivity, using targeted auditory stimulation. Across a series of independent experiments, we demonstrate that αCLAS alters alpha power, frequency, and connectivity in a phase, amplitude, and topography-dependent manner. Using single-pulse-αCLAS, we show that the effects of auditory stimuli on alpha oscillations can be explained within the theoretical framework of oscillator theory and a phase-reset mechanism. Finally, we demonstrate the functional relevance of our approach by showing that αCLAS can interfere with sleep onset dynamics in a phase-dependent manner. Alpha oscillations are electrophysiological features of the human brain linked to fundamental processes including memory and perception. This study introduces a closed-loop auditory stimulation approach to selectively modulate alpha oscillations in the human brain in a phase-dependent and spatially-specific manner. Introduction: Learning through perceptual training using the Gabor patch (GP) has attracted attention as a new vision restoration technique for myopia and age-related deterioration of visual acuity (VA). However, the task itself is monotonous and painful and requires numerous training sessions and some time before being effective, which has been a challenge for its widespread application. One effective means of facilitating perceptual learning is the empowerment of EEG alpha rhythm in the sensory cortex before neurofeedback (NF) training; however, there is a lack of evidence for VA. Methods: We investigated whether four 30-min sessions of GP training, conducted over 2 weeks with/without EEG NF to increase alpha power (NF and control group, respectively), can improve vision in myopic subjects. Contrast sensitivity (CS) and VA were measured before and after each GP training. Results: The NF group showed an improvement in CS at the fourth training session, not observed in the control group. In addition, VA improved only in the NF group at the third and fourth training sessions, this appears as a consolidation effect (maintenance of the previous training effect). Participants who produced stronger alpha power during the third training session showed greater VA recovery during the fourth training session. Discussion: These results indicate that enhanced pretraining alpha empowerment strengthens the subsequent consolidation of perceptual learning and that even a short period of GP training can have a positive effect on VA recovery.
