Abstract

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic had a global impact on people life, notably because of lockdown periods. This could particularly affected patients suffering from hip fracture, who could have been more isolated during these periods. We aim at evaluating the impact of the COVID-19 period (including lockdown periods) on quality of life (QOL) in older adult patients 90 days after a surgery for a hip fracture.Subject and methodsAncillary study of the prospective randomized controlled HiFIT study. We compared the QOL measured at 90 days after a hip fracture surgery using the EuroQOL-5 dimensions 3 levels (EQ-5D), the Perceived Quality of life (PQOL) and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) in patients included in the Hifit study before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.ResultsThe characteristics of the 161 patients included before and of the 213 included during the COVID period (including 122 (57%) during COVID with containment periods and 91 (43%) during COVID without containment periods) were similar (mean age 84 ± 10 years; 282 (75%) women). The majority (81%) of the patients alive at 90 days had returned to their previous place of residence in both periods. During the COVID period, EQ-5D showed better patient pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression levels. The PQOL happiness was not different, with around 81% of the patient being “happy” or “very happy” during the two periods and the IADL was also similar during the two periods. In the multivariate analysis odd ratios of having poorer outcomes were increased before COVID for pain/discomfort (OR 2.38, 95%CI [1.41–4.15], p = 0.001), anxiety (OR 1.89 [1.12–3.21], p = 0.017) and mobility (1.69 [1.02–2.86], p = 0.044).ConclusionPatient’s quality of life measured using different scales was not altered during the COVID period compared to before COVID, 90 days after a hip fracture. Surprisingly, the Pain/Discomfort and Anxiety dimensions of the EQ-5D questionnaires were even better during the COVID period.Clinical trial registration:https://clinicaltrials.gov/ (NCT02972294).

Abstract

ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate speech-language-hearing symptoms in adults after the acute phase of COVID-19 and the impact of these persistent symptoms on their physical and emotional aspects, functional capacity, and social relationships. Methods: 204 adults who tested positive for COVID-19 between January 2021 and July 2022 and who completed an online questionnaire, addressing different variables. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: the most prevalent symptoms up to 30 days after infection were tiredness (46%), memory loss (40.2%), and ageusia (26.5%). The most found long-term symptoms were memory loss (34.3%), tiredness (21.1%), and difficulties in starting a sentence or conversation (10.1%). Anosmia and ageusia were also cited. These persistent symptoms had an impact on their emotional aspect (33.3%), followed by the physical (26%) and occupational (25%) ones. Conclusion: this study found persistent symptoms after the acute phase of COVID-19, which can lead to speech-language-hearing disorders, such as impaired oral language and eating. These persistent symptoms impacted the participants’ emotional, physical, and occupational aspects.

Abstract

Thlaspi arvense (Pennycress) is an emerging feedstock for biofuel production because of its high seed oil content enriched in erucic acid. A transcriptomic and a lipidomic study were performed to analyze the dynamics of gene expression, glycerolipid content and acyl-group distribution during seed maturation. Genes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis were expressed at the early stages of seed maturation. Genes encoding enzymes of the Kennedy pathway like diacylglycerol acyltransferase1 (TaDGAT1), lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase (TaLPAT) or glycerol 3-phosphate acyltransferase (TaGPAT) increased their expression with maturation, coinciding with the increase in triacylglycerol species containing 22:1. Positional analysis showed that the most abundant triacylglycerol species contained 18:2 at sn-2 position in all maturation stages, suggesting no specificity of the lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase for very long chain fatty acids. Diacylglycerol acyltransferase2 (TaDGAT2) mRNA was more abundant at the initial maturation stages, coincident with the rapid incorporation of 22:1 to triacylglycerol, suggesting a coordination between Diacylglycerol acyltransferase enzymes for triacylglycerol biosynthesis. Genes encoding the phospholipid-diacylglycerol acyltransferase (TaPDAT1), lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase (TaLPCAT) or phosphatidylcholine diacylglycerolcholine phosphotransferase (TaPDCT), involved in acyl-editing or phosphatidyl-choline (PC)-derived diacylglycerol (DAG) biosynthesis showed also higher expression at the early maturation stages, coinciding with a higher proportion of triacylglycerol containing C18 fatty acids. These results suggested a higher contribution of these two pathways at the early stages of seed maturation. Lipidomic analysis of the content and acyl-group distribution of diacylglycerol and phosphatidyl-choline pools was compatible with the acyl content in triacylglycerol at the different maturation stages.
