We report on the observations of 188 sporadic layers of either Ca atoms and/or Ca ions that we have observed during 112 nights of lidar soundings of Ca, and 58 nights of Ca+ soundings, at Kühlungsborn, Germany (54° N, 12° E). The Ca+ soundings have been performed simultaneously and in a common volume with the Ca soundings by two separate lidars. Correlations between sporadic neutral and ionized metal layers are demonstrated through four case studies. A systematic study of the variations of occurrence of sporadic Ca and Ca+ layers reveals that neutral and ionized Ca layers are not as closely correlated as expected earlier: (a) The altitude distribution shows the simultaneous occurrence of both sporadic Ca and Ca+ layers to be most likely only in the narrow altitude range between 90 and 95 km. Above that region, in the lower thermosphere, the sporadic ion layers are much more frequent than atom layers. Below 90 km only very few sporadic layers have been observed; (b) The seasonal variation of sporadic Ca layers exhibits a minimum of occurrence in summer, while sporadic Ca+ layers do not show a significant seasonal variation (only the dense Ca+ layers appear to have a maximum in summer). At mid-latitudes sporadic Ca layers are more frequent than sporadic layers of other atmospheric metals like Na or K. For the explanation of our observations new formation mechanisms are discussed.Key words. Ionosphere (ion chemistry and composition; ionosphere-atmosphere interactions; mid-latitude ionosphere)

Anti-pneumococcal polysaccharide antibody (anti-PPS) levels were measured in 153 serum samples collected from children aged between 2 and 47 months living in the highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Fifty-seven of the samples were collected during acute episodes of lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI). Total IgA and IgG increased steadily with age; however, no association was found between the levels of these antibodies and the health status of the child. Total IgM levels showed little relationship to the age of the child but under 12 months of age levels were somewhat higher on average in children with pneumonia. For most of eight pneumococcal serotypes tested, specific IgG levels were found to decline rapidly in the first 6-8 months, reaching a minimum at approximately 12 months of age. Serotype 3 was exceptional in having very low titres in the youngest children. A separate analysis of 24 cord sera suggested that antibodies to this serotype do not usually cross the placenta in PNG. Children with pneumonia tended to have lower levels of specific IgG than healthy controls of the same age. Specific anti-PPS IgA levels were found to increase steadily with age, but were not associated with health status

Abundance of anophelines in 10 villages in the Wosera area of Papua New Guinea was monitored during 1990-1993. Of 85,197 anophelines collected in 1,276 paired indoor and outdoor landing catches, 40.4% were Anopheles koliensis Owen, 36.7% An. punctulatus Donitz, 14.3% Art. karwari (James), 4.9% An. farauti s.l. Laveran, 3.1% An. longirostris Brug, and 0.7% An. bancroftii Giles. Maps of average indoor biting rates were produced using a Bayesian conditional autoregressive model which allowed for heterogeneities in sampling effort over time and space. Differences in spatial distributions among species were observed among and within villages and were related to the distribution of larval habitats and vegetation. Abundance of An. punctulatus and An. koliensis decreased with distance from the main waterway and probably from a sago swamp forest at 6 villages in North Wosera. Abundance of An. punctulatus was associated negatively with those of An. farauti s.l., An. longirostris, and An. bancroftii. The latter 3 species also had relatively low ratios of indoor-to-outdoor biting rates, and earlier biting times than An. punctulatus. Human blood indices of at least 0.79 were observed for all species except An. bancroftii. Abundance of all 6 species was correlated temporally with recent rainfall, but An. koliensis, An. kanvari, and An. longirostris showed greater temporal variability than the other species. An. punctulatus and An. koliensis tended to occur together in time and space (index of association, I = 0.85). Weaker associations were seen between An. farauti s.l. and An. longirostris (I = 0.44) and An. koliensis and An. kanvari (I = 0.34). The most frequently collected species occurred together and were concentrated near the Amugu river; the remaining species tended to occur together but in different parts of the Wosera area. The importance of understanding ecological requirements of the different Anopheles vectors and their association with key household and landscape features are discussed in relation to malaria transmission and control

For the first time, three different temperature lidar methods are combined to obtain time-resolved complete temperature profiles with high altitude resolution over an altitude range from the planetary boundary layer up to the lower thermosphere (about 1–105 km). The Leibniz-Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) at Kühlungsborn, Germany (54° N, 12° E) operates two lidar instruments, using three different temperature measurement methods, optimized for three altitude ranges: (1) Probing the spectral Doppler broadening of the potassium D1 resonance lines with a tunable narrow-band laser emitter allows the determination of atmospheric temperature profiles at the metal layer altitudes (80–105 km). (2) Between about 20 and 90 km, temperatures were calculated from Rayleigh backscattering on air molecules, where the upper start values for the calculation algorithm were taken from the potassium lidar results. Correction methods have been applied to account for, e.g. Rayleigh extinction or Mie scattering of aerosols below about 32 km. (3) At altitudes below about 25 km, backscattering on the Rotational Raman lines is strong enough to obtain temperatures by measuring the temperature dependent spectral shape of the Rotational Raman spectrum. This method works well down to about 1 km. The instrumental configuration of the IAP lidars was optimized for a 3–6 km overlap of the temperature profiles at the method transition altitudes. First night-long measurements show clear wave structures propagating from the lower stratosphere up to the lower thermosphere in most of the nights.

The German Aerosol Lidar Network has attempted, for the first time worldwide, to establish a cli- matological data set for the aerosol vertical distribution over several stations in a quantitative and coordinated approach. Quantitative results have been obtained by employing advanced lidar methods like Raman or scanning lidar to retrieve profiles of the extinction coefficient directly. To provide for a sufficiently homogeneous data set substantial effort was put into data quality assurance. Intercom- parisons were performed at both system and retrieval algorithm levels. A very satisfactory agreement between the different systems was achieved. A rather large data set of aerosol extinction and backscat- ter profiles was collected using regularly scheduled measurements on predetermined days and times to avoid a bias due to ”preferred” weather conditions for lidar observations. A large number of ad- ditional measurements were devoted to studies of special weather conditions. The results of special studies related to the aerosol distribution associated with high pressure systems and cold front pas- sages are reported as well as special studies on the long term development of the stratospheric aerosol distribution, transport processes in an Alpine valley, and long range transport of aerosol. The retrieval of aerosol microphysical properties using lidar measurements at several wavelengths is described mathematically and applied to actual examples, showing very promising results. Several methods for the statistical analysis of the climatological data set are developed making use of the simultaneously collected data set of backtrajectories. Products of these analyses include the seasonal dependence of boundary layer heights, the mean extinction and backscatter profiles, the mean optical depth, sep- arately for PBL and free troposphere, the seasonal dependence of aerosol extinction, the statistical distribution of aerosol extinction and of extinction-to-backscatter ratio values, and the dependence of aerosol optical properties on the airmass history.

Chemical ozone loss rates inside the Arctic polar vortex were determined in early 1998 and early 1999 by using the Match technique based on coordinated ozonesonde measurements. These two winters provide the only opportunities in recent years to investigate chemical ozone loss in a warm Arctic vortex under threshold conditions, i.e., where the preconditions for chlorine activation, and hence ozone destruction, only occurred occasionally. In 1998, results were obtained in January and February between 410 and 520 K. The overall ozone loss was observed to be largely insignificant, with the exception of late February, when those air parcels exposed to temperatures below 195 K were affected by chemical ozone loss. In 1999, results are confined to the 475 K isentropic level, where no significant ozone loss was observed. Average temperatures were some 8° - 10° higher than those in 1995, 1996, and 1997, when substantial chemical ozone loss occurred. The results underline the strong dependence of the chemical ozone loss on the stratospheric temperatures. This study shows that enhanced chlorine alone does not provide a sufficient condition for ozone loss. The evolution of stratospheric temperatures over the next decade will be the determining factor for the amount of wintertime chemical ozone loss in the Arctic stratosphere. With the Match technique, which is based on the coordinated release of ozonesondes, chemical ozone loss rates in the Arctic stratospheric vortex in early 1997 have been quantified in a vertical region between 400 K and 550 K. Ozone destruction was observed from mid February to mid March in most of these levels, with maximum loss rates between 25 and 45 ppbv/day. The vortex averaged loss rates and the accumulated vertically integrated ozone loss have been smaller than in the previous two winters, indicating that the record low ozone columns observed in spring 1997 were partly caused by dynamical effects. The observed ozone loss is inhomogeneous through the vortex with the highest loss rates located in the vortex centre, coinciding with the lowest temperatures. Here the loss rates per sunlit hour reached 6 ppbv/h, while the corresponding vortex averaged rates did not exceed 3.9 ppbv/h.

The antibody response against the malaria vaccine SPf66 and against circumsporozoite (CS) protein has been tested in immune adults from a malaria endemic area in Papua New Guinea. All individuals were genotyped for the HLA class II DQB1 and DRB1 loci, and the humoral response was analyzed with respect to the identified class II alleles. At each locus, only three alleles were frequent, namely DRB1*11, *15, and *16, and DQB1*0301, *0502, and *0601. Antibodies against SPf66 and CS protein were found in 84% and 79% of the individuals, respectively. A strong negative association was detected between the humoral response against SPf66 and DRB1*15 and DQB1*0601. A positive association of the response was observed with DRB1*11 and DQB1*0301. After analysis with a multiple regression model in which all alleles were included simultaneously, only DRB1*15 remained significantly associated with low antibody responses. This suggests that nonresponders may be expected after immunization with SPf66 in certain populations.

The prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum in children and adults living in a malaria-endemic area in Papua New Guinea was determined by microscopy and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The sensitivity of detecting P. falciparum infections increased two-fold with PCR. Undetected infections by microscopy were more frequent in adults (including adolescents) than in children. Detecting this subpatent parasitaemia by PCR resulted in an equal P. falciparum prevalence in children and adults; in children the parasitaemia rate increased from 32% to 48% and in adults from 23% to 47%. In more than 50% of all blood samples positive for P. vivax and P. malariae an underlying P. falciparum infection remained undetected by microscopy. The introduction of PCR has opened up new possibilities in malaria diagnosis and research.
