1. Superparamagnetic Superparticles for Magnetic Hyperthermia Therapy: Overcoming the Particle Size Limit

Abstract

Iron oxide (e.g., Fe$_3$O$_4$ or Fe$_2$O$_3$) nanoparticles are promising candidates for a variety of biomedical applications ranging from magnetic hyperthermia therapy to drug delivery and bio-detection, due to their superparamagnetism, non-toxicity, and biodegradability. While particles of small size (below a critical size, ~20 nm) display superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature, these particles tend to penetrate highly sensitive areas of the body such as the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB), leading to undesired effects. In addition, these particles possess a high probability of retention, which can lead to genotoxicity and biochemical toxicity. Increasing particle size is a means for addressing these problems but also suppresses the superparamagnetism. We have overcome this particle size limit by synthesizing unique polycrystalline iron oxide nanoparticles composed of multiple nanocrystals of 10 to 15 nm size while tuning particle size from 160 to 400 nm. These so-called superparticles preserve superparamagnetic characteristics and exhibit excellent hyperthermia responses. The specific absorption rates (SAR) exceed 250 W/g (HAC = 800 Oe, f = 310 kHz) at a low concentration of 0.5 mg/mL, indicating their capability in cancer treatment with minimum dose. Our study underscores the potential of size-tunable polycrystalline iron oxide superparticles with superparamagnetic properties for advanced biomedical applications and sensing technologies.

2. Exploring the complex interplay of anisotropies in magnetosomes of magnetotactic bacteria

Abstract

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are of significant interest for biophysical applications, particularly in cancer treatment. The biomineralized magnetosomes produced by these bacteria are high-quality magnetic nanoparticles that form chains through a highly reproducible natural process. Specifically, Magnetovibrio blakemorei and Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense exhibit distinct magnetosome morphologies: truncated hexa-octahedral and truncated octahedral shapes, respectively. Despite having identical compositions (magnetite, Fe3O4) and comparable dimensions, their effective uniaxial anisotropies differ significantly, with M. blakemorei showing ~25 kJ/m^3 and M. gryphiswaldense ~11 kJ/m^3 at 300K. This variation presents a unique opportunity to explore the role of different anisotropy contributions in the magnetic responses of magnetite-based nanoparticles. This study systematically investigates these responses by examining static magnetization as a function of temperature (M vs. T, 5 mT) and magnetic field (M vs. H, up to 1 T). Above the Verwey transition temperature (110 K), the effective anisotropy is dominated by shape anisotropy, notably increasing coercivity for M. blakemorei by up to two-fold compared to M. gryphiswaldense. Below this temperature, the effective uniaxial anisotropy increases non-monotonically, significantly altering magnetic behavior. Our simulations based on dynamic Stoner-Wohlfarth models indicate that below the Verwey temperature, a uniaxial magnetocrystalline contribution emerges, peaking at ~22-24 kJ/m^3 at 5 K, values close to those of bulk magnetite. This demonstrates the profound impact of anisotropic properties on the magnetic behaviors and applications of magnetite-based nanoparticles and highlights the exceptional utility of magnetosomes as ideal model systems for studying the complex interplay of anisotropies in magnetite-based nanoparticles.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has found application in Human Activity Recognition (HAR) in competitive sports. To date, most Machine Learning (ML) approaches for HAR have relied on offline (batch) training, imposing higher computational and tagging burdens compared to online processing unsupervised approaches. Additionally, the decisions behind traditional ML predictors are opaque and require human interpretation. In this work, we apply an online processing unsupervised clustering approach based on low-cost wearable Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs). The outcomes generated by the system allow for the automatic expansion of limited tagging available (e.g., by referees) within those clusters, producing pertinent information for the explainable classification stage. Specifically, our work focuses on achieving automatic explainability for predictions related to athletes' activities, distinguishing between correct, incorrect, and cheating practices in Nordic Walking. The proposed solution achieved performance metrics of close to 100 % on average.

Abstract

Recent studies confirm the applicability of Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)-based systems for human motion analysis. Notwithstanding, high-end IMU-based commercial solutions are yet too expensive and complex to democratize their use among a wide range of potential users. Less featured entry-level commercial solutions are being introduced in the market, trying to fill this gap, but still present some limitations that need to be overcome. At the same time, there is a growing number of scientific papers using not commercial, but custom do-it-yourself IMU-based systems in medical and sports applications. Even though these solutions can help to popularize the use of this technology, they have more limited features and the description on how to design and build them from scratch is yet too scarce in the literature. The aim of this work is two-fold: (1) Proving the feasibility of building an affordable custom solution aimed at simultaneous multiple body parts orientation tracking; while providing a detailed bottom-up description of the required hardware, tools, and mathematical operations to estimate and represent 3D movement in real-time. (2) Showing how the introduction of a custom 2.4 GHz communication protocol including a channel hopping strategy can address some of the current communication limitations of entry-level commercial solutions. The proposed system can be used for wireless real-time human body parts orientation tracking with up to 10 custom sensors, at least at 50 Hz. In addition, it provides a more reliable motion data acquisition in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi crowded environments, where the use of entry-level commercial solutions might be unfeasible. Abstract

This study presents the outcomes of empirical investigations pertaining to human-vehicle interactions involving an autonomous vehicle equipped with both internal and external Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) within a crosswalk scenario. The internal and external HMIs were integrated with implicit communication techniques, incorporating a combination of gentle and aggressive braking maneuvers within the crosswalk. Data were collected through a combination of questionnaires and quantifiable metrics, including pedestrian decision to cross related to the vehicle distance and speed. The questionnaire responses reveal that pedestrians experience enhanced safety perceptions when the external HMI and gentle braking maneuvers are used in tandem. In contrast, the measured variables demonstrate that the external HMI proves effective when complemented by the gentle braking maneuver. Abstract

Human activity recognition and clinical biomechanics are challenging problems in physical telerehabilitation medicine. However, most publicly available datasets on human body movements cannot be used to study both problems in an out-of-the-lab movement acquisition setting. The objective of the VIDIMU dataset is to pave the way towards affordable patient gross motor tracking solutions for daily life activities recognition and kinematic analysis. The dataset includes 13 activities registered using a commodity camera and five inertial sensors. The video recordings were acquired in 54 subjects, of which 16 also had simultaneous recordings of inertial sensors. The novelty of dataset lies in: (i) the clinical relevance of the chosen movements, (ii) the combined utilization of affordable video and custom sensors, and (iii) the implementation of state-of-the-art tools for multimodal data processing of 3D body pose tracking and motion reconstruction in a musculoskeletal model from inertial data. The validation confirms that a minimally disturbing acquisition protocol, performed according to real-life conditions can provide a comprehensive picture of human joint angles during daily life activities.

Abstract

The critical role of AMPA receptor (AMPAR) trafficking in long-term potentiation (LTP) of excitatory synaptic transmission is now well established, but the underlying molecular mechanism is still uncertain. Recent research suggests that PSD-95 captures AMPARs via an interaction with the AMPAR auxiliary subunits-transmembrane AMPAR regulatory proteins (TARPs). To determine if such interaction is a core minimal component of the AMPAR trafficking and LTP mechanism, we engineered artificial binding partners, which individually were biochemically and functionally dead but which, when expressed together, rescue binding and both basal synaptic transmission and LTP. These findings establish the TARP/PSD-95 complex as an essential interaction underlying AMPAR trafficking and LTP.

17. Automatic Selection of Machine Learning Models for Armed People Identification

Abstract

This research aims to improve the automatic identification of armed people in surveillance videos. We focus on people armed with pistols and revolvers. Furthermore, we use the YOLOv4 to detect people and weapons in each video frame. We developed a series of algorithms to create a dataset with the information extracted from the bounding boxes generated by YOLOv4 in real-time. Thereby, we initially developed six-armed people detectors (APD) based on six machine learning models: Random Forest Classifier (RFC-APD), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP-APD), Support Vector Machine (SVM-APD), Logistic Regression (LR-APD), Naive Bayes (NB-APD), and Gradient Boosting Classifier (GBC-APD). These models use 20 predictors to make their predictions. These predictors are computed from the bounding box coordinates of the detected people and weapons, their distances, and areas of intersection. Based on our results, the RFC-APD was the best-performing detector, with an accuracy of 95.59%, a recall of 94.51%, and an F1-score of 95.65%. In this work, we propose to create selectors for deciding which APD to use in each video frame (APD4F) to improve the detection results. Besides, we implemented two types of APD4Fs, one based on a Random Forest Classifier (RFC-APD4F) and another in a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP-APD4F). We developed 44 APD4Fs combining subsets of the six APDs. Both APD4F types outperformed most of the independent use of all six APDs. A multilayer perceptron-based APD4F, which combines an MLP-APD, a NB-APD, and a LR-APD, presented the best performance, achieving an accuracy of 95.84%, a recall of 99.28% and an F1 score of 96.07%.

24. The potential for solar-diesel hybrid mini-grids in refugee camps: A case study of Nyabiheke camp, Rwanda

Abstract

Electricity access in refugee camps is often limited to critical operations for humanitarian agencies and typically powered by fossil fuel generators. We study the economic and environmental benefits that optimised fully renewable and diesel-hybrid mini-grid designs can provide in humanitarian settings by displacing diesel use. Considering the case study of Nyabiheke camp in Rwanda we found that these benefits are substantial, with savings up to 32% of total costs and 83% of emissions, and cost payback times ranging from 0.9 to 6.2 years. Despite of their different cost structures, we find that all hybridisation levels of the system provide cost and emission savings compared to the incumbent diesel system. We highlight how modelling tools can facilitate the introduction and progressive expansion of systems as well as inform operational considerations on the ground. This study demonstrates how financial resources, environmental objectives and operational timeframes will influence the most appropriate system design for humanitarian actors on a case-by-case basis.

Abstract

AMPA receptors (AMPARs) are fundamental elements in excitatory synaptic transmission and synaptic plasticity in the CNS. Long term potentiation (LTP), a form of synaptic plasticity which contributes to learning and memory formation, relies on the accumulation of AMPARs at the postsynapse. This phenomenon requires the coordinated recruitment of different elements in the AMPAR complex. Based on recent research reviewed herein, we propose an updated AMPAR trafficking and LTP model which incorporates both extracellular as well as intracellular mechanisms. 28. Rhizobial nitrogen fixation efficiency shapes endosphere bacterial communities and Medicago truncatula host growth

Abstract

Abstract Background Despite the knowledge that the soil–plant–microbiome nexus is shaped by interactions amongst its members, very little is known about how individual symbioses regulate this shaping. Even less is known about how the agriculturally important symbiosis of nitrogen-fixing rhizobia with legumes is impacted according to soil type, yet this knowledge is crucial if we are to harness or improve it. We asked how the plant, soil and microbiome are modulated by symbiosis between the model legume Medicago truncatula and different strains of Sinorhizobium meliloti or Sinorhizobium medicae whose nitrogen-fixing efficiency varies, in three distinct soil types that differ in nutrient fertility, to examine the role of the soil environment upon the plant–microbe interaction during nodulation. Results The outcome of symbiosis results in installment of a potentially beneficial microbiome that leads to increased nutrient uptake that is not simply proportional to soil nutrient abundance. A number of soil edaphic factors including Zn and Mo, and not just the classical N/P/K nutrients, group with microbial community changes, and alterations in the microbiome can be seen across different soil fertility types. Root endosphere emerged as the plant microhabitat more affected by this rhizobial efficiency-driven community reshaping, manifested by the accumulation of members of the phylum Actinobacteria. The plant in turn plays an active role in regulating its root community, including sanctioning low nitrogen efficiency rhizobial strains, leading to nodule senescence in particular plant–soil–rhizobia strain combinations. Conclusions The microbiome–soil–rhizobial dynamic strongly influences plant nutrient uptake and growth, with the endosphere and rhizosphere shaped differentially according to plant–rhizobial interactions with strains that vary in nitrogen-fixing efficiency levels. These results open up the possibility to select inoculation partners best suited for plant, soil type and microbial community. Video Abstract

35. RealMix: Towards Realistic Semi-Supervised Deep Learning Algorithms

Abstract

Semi-Supervised Learning (SSL) algorithms have shown great potential in training regimes when access to labeled data is scarce but access to unlabeled data is plentiful. However, our experiments illustrate several shortcomings that prior SSL algorithms suffer from. In particular, poor performance when unlabeled and labeled data distributions differ. To address these observations, we develop RealMix, which achieves state-of-the-art results on standard benchmark datasets across different labeled and unlabeled set sizes while overcoming the aforementioned challenges. Notably, RealMix achieves an error rate of 9.79% on CIFAR10 with 250 labels and is the only SSL method tested able to surpass baseline performance when there is significant mismatch in the labeled and unlabeled data distributions. RealMix demonstrates how SSL can be used in real world situations with limited access to both data and compute and guides further research in SSL with practical applicability in mind., Comment: Code available at https://github.com/uizard-technologies/realmix

Abstract

We tested the proposal that the C-terminal domain (CTD) of the AMPAR subunit GluA1 is required for LTP. We found that a knock-in mouse lacking the CTD of GluA1 expresses normal LTP and spatial memory, assayed by the Morris water maze. Our results support a model in which LTP generates synaptic slots, which capture passively diffusing AMPARs.

50. Tuning the Surface Energy of Hole Transport Layers Based on Carbazole Self‐Assembled Monolayers for Highly Efficient Sn/Pb Perovskite Solar Cells.

Abstract

Recently, carbazole‐based self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been utilized as hole transport layers (HTLs) in perovskite solar cells. However, their application in Sn or mixed Sn/Pb perovskite solar cells has been hindered by the poor wettability of the perovskite precursor solution on the carbazole surface. Here a self‐assembled bilayer (SAB) comprising a covalent monolayer (Br‐2PACz) and a noncovalent wetting layer (4CzNH3I) as the HTL in a Cs0.25FA0.75Sn0.5Pb0.5I3 perovskite solar cell is proposed. It is demonstrated that the wetting layer completely solves the problem due to the higher polarity of the surface and, furthermore, the ammonium groups help in the passivation of trap states at the buried SAB/perovskite interface. The introduction of the SAB enhances the device reproducibility with an average efficiency of 18.98 ± 0.28% (19.45% for the best device), compared to 11.54 ± 9.36% (19.34% for the best device) for the SAM‐only devices. Furthermore, the improved perovskite processability on the SAB helps to increase the reproducibility of larger size device, where, a 12.5% efficiency for a 0.8 cm2 active area device compared to 0.68% for the best SAM‐based solar cell is demonstrated. Finally, the device's operational stability is also improved to 358 hours (T80%), compared to 220 hours for the SAM‐based solar cell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
