When blood flow is restored, oxidative and inflammatory molecules are distributed throughout the bloodstream, triggering both local and systemic damage. Our goal was to evaluate the potential of three antioxidant and/or anti–inflammatory compounds (curcumin, dexmedetomidine and α-tocopherol) to prevent or reverse local and systemic damage induced by i–IRI.Methods: i-IRI was induced by placing a microvascular clip in the superior mesenteric artery of female WAG/RijHsd rats; the clip was removed after 1h and reperfusion was allowed for 4h. Curcumin (200 mg/kg, orally), α-tocopherol (20 mg/kg, i.p.), and dexmedetomidine (5 or 20 μg/kg, s.c.; DEX5 and DEX20, respectively) were administered. Blood and terminal ileum specimens were collected for biochemical and histological determination. Furthermore, D-xylose absorption test was performed to evaluate intestinal absorption; after completing the 1-hour ischemia and 4-hour reperfusion period, 1 mL of aqueous D-xylose solution (0.615 mg/mL) was administered orally, and one hour later, plasma D-xylose levels were quantified.Results: The histological injury degree (HID) measured by the Chiu scale was significantly reduced when the treatments were applied (non-treated rats, 2.6 ± 0.75; curcumin, 1.54 ± 0.8; DEX5, 1.47 ± 0.7; DEX20 1.14 ± 0.5; and α-tocopherol, 1.01 ± 0.6); intestinal absorptive capacity also improved in all cases healthy rats (2.06 ± 0.07 μg/mL; non-treated, 1.18 ± 0.07 μg/mL; curcumin 1.76 ± 0.3 μg/mL; DEX5, 2.29 ± 0.2 μg/mL; DEX20, 2.25 ± 0.26 μg/mL; and α-tocopherol 1.66 ± 0.21 μg/mL). However, it failed to reduce liver enzyme levels. Finally, only dexmedetomidine significantly reduced urea and creatinine levels compared to non-treated animals.Conclusion: All drugs were effective in reducing HID, although α-tocopherol was effective to a greater extent. Abstract

Helium implantation in epitaxial thin films is a way to control the out-of-plane deformation independently from the in-plane strain controlled by epitaxy. In particular, implantation by means of a helium microscope allows for local implantation and patterning down to the nanometer resolution, which is of interest for device applications. We present here a study of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) films where strain was patterned locally by helium implantation. Our combined Raman, XRD and TEM study shows that the implantation causes an elongation of the BiFeO3 unit cell and ultimately a transition towards the so-called super-tetragonal polymorph via states with mixed phases. In addition, TEM reveals the onset of amorphization at a threshold dose that does not seem to impede the overall increase in tetragonality. The phase transition from the R-like to T-like BiFeO3 appears as first-order in character, with regions of phase coexistence and abrupt changes in lattice parameters.

Abstract

Chapter 17 in High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) : Preliminary Design Report. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up a new energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 7,000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design value and the integrated luminosity (total collisions created) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complex and exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require about ten years to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), will rely on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11-12 tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 300 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation. Abstract

There is an increasing acknowledgment that suicidal behaviors are negatively affected by school failure in adolescents and young adults. However, no systematic reviews with meta-analysis have been performed to evaluate the strength of this association. We assessed the magnitude of association of school failure as risk factor for suicide behavior in adolescents and young adults. Six international databases were searched up until January 2017. Inclusion criteria were: (1) assessment of suicide attempt or suicide; (2) case-control or cohort studies; (3) subjects aged 12-26 years; (4) school failure evaluated, which includes low academic performance, school dropout, school expulsion, and grade repetition. Random effect models were used; population attributable risks (PARs) were estimated. From 26,883 potentially eligible articles, 14 (62,298 individuals) were included. Meta-analyses could only be performed for suicide attempt. A history of school dropout (OR 6.44, 95% CI 3.03-13.65), low academic performance (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.22-1.81), and school failure (OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.49-2.64) were significant risks of suicide attempts. Highest PAR estimates were 9.9% for school dropout, 5.1% for low academic performance, and 6.7% for any school failure. Only one study has been found for suicide, but results suggest an association with school dropout. Results show that the students who had school failure are at higher risk of suicide attempt and probably for suicide. The development of effective programs to prevent suicidal behaviors in educational settings may be an effective strategy to reduce these behaviors. However, reliable conclusions from this review are limited by the small amount of included studies for analysis.

Abstract

Abstract Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), the key CO2-fixing enzyme in photosynthesis, is notorious for its low carboxylation. We report a highly active and assembly-competent Form II Rubisco from the endosymbiont of a deep-sea tubeworm Riftia pachyptila (RPE Rubisco), which shows a 50.5% higher carboxylation efficiency than that of a high functioning Rubisco from Synechococcus sp. PCC7002 (7002 Rubisco). It is a simpler hexamer with three pairs of large subunit homodimers around a central threefold symmetry axis. Compared with 7002 Rubisco, it showed a 3.6-fold higher carbon capture efficiency in vivo using a designed CO2 capture model. The simple structure, high carboxylation efficiency, easy heterologous soluble expression/assembly make RPE Rubisco a ready-to-deploy enzyme for CO2 capture that does not require complex co-expression of chaperones. The chemosynthetic CO2 fixation machinery of chemolithoautotrophs, CO2-fixing endosymbionts, may be more efficient than previously realized with great potential for next-generation microbial CO2 sequestration platforms.

Abstract

This research is framed within a broader line in which the author addresses the reciprocal relations between Art and Architecture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Thus, the essential figure of Álvaro Siza, architect and artist, is analysed in relation to the role of drawing in his process of artistic-architectural ideation. The aim is to clarify, not only the genius of his production, but above all and especially his role as a catalyst and defender of a total art, undoubtedly charged with mysticism. In this sense, his integrative conception of art makes it possible to see the richness of his thought, which is expressed through a 'hand that knows', that is, wise, human and divine at the same time.

Consequently, institutions like the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are pressing towards the adoption of measures that increase the industry efficiency, like Just-In-Time (JIT) operations. Methods and Results This paper shows why the Sea Traffic Management (STM) concept, based on stakeholder collaboration, is a JIT enabler. To do so, we analyze 1 year of navigation data of 33 ships, estimating the impact of JIT barriers on shipping and showing the benefits that the adoption of STM, with different maturity levels, could provide to the industry. Our evaluation shows that, only for containerships, STM can help reducing by 15–23% of fuel consumption and GHG emissions.

Abstract

The volutid gastropod Zidona dufresnei is an important fishery resource from the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. This species exhibits strong interpopulation differences in life history features, which lead to postulate the existence of two morphotype ('normal' and 'dwarf'). In this study, we combine and compare traditional and geometric morphometrics to capture shell shape variation of Z. dufresnei among three populations from Mar del Plata (37° S) to San Matías Gulf (42° S) to test the hypothesis that the phenotypic variation already described in the life cycle and size is also expressed in the shell shape. Significant differences in the shell morphology among these three populations were detected, mainly associated to the maximum size of individuals and shell shape. The Bahía San Antonio morphotype had shells with higher general roundness and weight compared to San Matías Gulf and Mar del Plata morphotypes, which were not differentiated. Our results support the hypothesis of Lahille (1895) who distinguished the morphotype of Bahía San Antonio ('dwarf' morphotype) as Voluta angulata affinis. The functional significance of the variability found is discussed in terms of the ecological and genetic effects on shape and size.
