1. A Sparse Multicover Bifiltration of Linear Size

Abstract

The $k$-cover of a point cloud $X$ of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ at radius $r$ is the set of all those points within distance $r$ of at least $k$ points of $X$. By varying the order $k$ and radius $r$ we obtain a two-parameter filtration known as the multicover bifiltration. This bifiltration has received attention recently due to being parameter-free and its robustness to outliers. However, it is hard to compute: the smallest known equivalent simplicial bifiltration has $O(|X|^{d+1})$ simplices, where $d$ is the dimension. In this paper we introduce a $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation of the multicover that has linear size $O(|X|)$, for a fixed $d$ and $\epsilon$. The methods also apply to the subdivision Rips bifiltration on metric spaces of bounded doubling dimension to obtain analogous results., Comment: 20 pages. Comments welcome

2. Probabilistic Analysis of Multiparameter Persistence Decompositions

Abstract

Multiparameter persistence modules can be uniquely decomposed into indecomposable summands. Among these indecomposables, intervals stand out for their simplicity, making them preferable for their ease of interpretation in practical applications and their computational efficiency. Empirical observations indicate that modules that decompose into only intervals are rare. To support this observation, we show that for numerous common multiparameter constructions, such as density- or degree-Rips bifiltrations, and across a general category of point samples, the probability of the homology-induced persistence module decomposing into intervals goes to zero as the sample size goes to infinity.

Abstract

Epilepsy is a prevalent neurological disorder that affects approximately 1% of the global population. Around 30-40% of patients do not respond to pharmacological treatment, leading to a significant negative impact on their quality of life. Closed-loop deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising treatment for individuals who do not respond to medical therapy. To achieve effective seizure control, algorithms play an important role in identifying relevant electrographic biomarkers from local field potentials (LFPs) to determine the optimal stimulation timing. In this regard, the detection and classification of events from ongoing brain activity, while achieving low power through computationally unexpensive implementations, represents a major challenge in the field. To address this challenge, we here present two lightweight algorithms, the ZdensityRODE and the AMPDE, for identifying relevant events from LFPs by utilizing semantic segmentation, which involves extracting different levels of information from the LFP and relevant events from it. The algorithms performance was validated against epileptiform activity induced by 4-minopyridine in mouse hippocampus-cortex (CTX) slices and recorded via microelectrode array, as a case study. The ZdensityRODE algorithm showcased a precision and recall of 93% for ictal event detection and 42% precision for interictal event detection, while the AMPDE algorithm attained a precision of 96% and recall of 90% for ictal event detection and 54% precision for interictal event detection. While initially trained specifically for detection of ictal activity, these algorithms can be fine-tuned for improved interictal detection, aiming at seizure prediction. Our results suggest that these algorithms can effectively capture epileptiform activity; their light weight opens new possibilities for real-time seizure detection and seizure prediction and control., Comment: submitted to Plos One

The space of degree d smooth projective hypersurfaces of CP n admits a scanning map to a certain space of sections. We compute a rational homotopy model of the action by conjugation of the group U (n + 1) on this space of sections, from which we deduce that the scanning map induces a monomorphism on cohomology when d > 2. 6. Delaunay Bifiltrations of Functions on Point Clouds

Abstract

The Delaunay filtration $\mathcal{D}_{\bullet}(X)$ of a point cloud $X\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is a central tool of computational topology. Its use is justified by the topological equivalence of $\mathcal{D}_{\bullet}(X)$ and the offset (i.e., union-of-balls) filtration of $X$. Given a function $\gamma: X \to \mathbb{R}$, we introduce a Delaunay bifiltration $\mathcal{DC}_{\bullet}(\gamma)$ that satisfies an analogous topological equivalence, ensuring that $\mathcal{DC}_{\bullet}(\gamma)$ topologically encodes the offset filtrations of all sublevel sets of $\gamma$, as well as the topological relations between them. $\mathcal{DC}_{\bullet}(\gamma)$ is of size $O(|X|^{\lceil\frac{d+1}{2}\rceil})$, which for $d$ odd matches the worst-case size of $\mathcal{D}_{\bullet}(X)$. Adapting the Bowyer-Watson algorithm for computing Delaunay triangulations, we give a simple, practical algorithm to compute $\mathcal{DC}_{\bullet}(\gamma)$ in time $O(|X|^{\lceil \frac{d}{2}\rceil +1})$. Our implementation, based on CGAL, computes $\mathcal{DC}_{\bullet}(\gamma)$ with modest overhead compared to computing $\mathcal{D}_{\bullet}(X)$, and handles tens of thousands of points in $\mathbb{R}^3$ within seconds., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 8 tables. 8. Decomposition of zero-dimensional persistence modules via rooted subsets

Abstract

We study the decomposition of zero-dimensional persistence modules, viewed as functors valued in the category of vector spaces factorizing through sets. Instead of working directly at the level of vector spaces, we take a step back and first study the decomposition problem at the level of sets. This approach allows us to define the combinatorial notion of rooted subsets. In the case of a filtered metric space $M$, rooted subsets relate the clustering behavior of the points of $M$ with the decomposition of the associated persistence module. In particular, we can identify intervals in such a decomposition quickly. In addition, rooted subsets can be understood as a generalization of the elder rule, and are also related to the notion of constant conqueror of Cai, Kim, M\'emoli and Wang. As an application, we give a lower bound on the number of intervals that we can expect in the decomposition of zero-dimensional persistence modules of a density-Rips filtration in Euclidean space: in the limit, and under very general circumstances, we can expect that at least 25% of the indecomposable summands are interval modules., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

9. Filtration-Domination in Bifiltered Graphs

Abstract

Bifiltered graphs are a versatile tool for modelling relations between data points across multiple grades of a two-dimensional scale. They are especially popular in topological data analysis, where the homological properties of the induced clique complexes are studied. To reduce the large size of these clique complexes, we identify filtration-dominated edges of the graph, whose removal preserves the relevant topological properties. We give two algorithms to detect filtration-dominated edges in a bifiltered graph and analyze their complexity. These two algorithms work directly on the bifiltered graph, without first extracting the clique complexes, which are generally much bigger. We present extensive experimental evaluation which shows that in most cases, more than 90% of the edges can be removed. In turn, we demonstrate that this often leads to a substantial speedup, and reduction in the memory usage, of the computational pipeline of multiparameter topological data analysis.

Abstract

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder (the third most common, following stroke and migraines). A key aspect of its diagnosis is the presence of seizures that occur without a known cause and the potential for new seizures to occur. Machine learning has shown potential as a cost-effective alternative for rapid diagnosis. In this study, we review the current state of machine learning in the detection and prediction of epileptic seizures. The objective of this study is to portray the existing machine learning methods for seizure prediction. Internet bibliographical searches were conducted to identify relevant literature on the topic. Through cross-referencing from key articles, additional references were obtained to provide a comprehensive overview of the techniques. As the aim of this paper aims is not a pure bibliographical review of the subject, the publications here cited have been selected among many others based on their number of citations. To implement accurate diagnostic and treatment tools, it is necessary to achieve a balance between prediction time, sensitivity, and specificity. This balance can be achieved using deep learning algorithms. The best performance and results are often achieved by combining multiple techniques and features, but this approach can also increase computational requirements.

12. History of Science Meets History of Art on Galileo's Telescope: An Integrated Approach for Science Education

Abstract

An interdisciplinary approach to science education through history of art is proposed. The approach is innovative, as the artworks complement the history, philosophy and sociology of science contents to increase students' interest and motivation. The approach integrates humanities and science education through history of art, which requests interdisciplinary cooperation of the teachers of the school subjects involved with historical curriculum contents. The approach is elaborated through the case of Galileo's telescope, which provides specific features on the relationships between science and technology (scientific instrumentation applied to generate knowledge), nature of science, and science-technology-society relationships, where history and art meet each other. Further, history of art contributes some contemporary artworks on Galileo case that highlight all those relationships. The explicitness, perception, beauty and accessibility of the paintings may also be a key element to develop teachers' and students' interest and motivation in teaching and learning science through its integration with history of art. Finally, the interdisciplinary educational approach develops a teaching-learning sequence on the basis of Galileo's telescope to guide teaching the issue in science education through history of art. This didactic exemplification elaborates some aims, contents, resources and activities throughout the human, social, philosophical, artistic, scientific and historical aspects involved in the case of Galileo that teachers must adapt to specific subjects, degree and students.

32. Science Teacher Education on Nature of Science through Explicit and Reflective Curriculum Development

Abstract

Nature of science (NOS) is a key component of scientific literacy, so science teacher education on NOS is critical to ensure students' scientific literacy. According to mainstream NOS literature, explicit and reflective interventions are recommended to effectively teach NOS. This paper presents an experience for the initial education of secondary science teachers, which focuses on teachers' professional and pedagogical content knowledge development on NOS. A mixed-method approach involving quantitative and qualitative activities was applied to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention to improve teachers' NOS understanding. The quantitative activity was carried out through a quasi-experimental design with pre-post-test assessments, and the qualitative activity involved the teachers' development of a teaching-learning sequence on a controversial science historical case and their self-reflections on their NOS beliefs, as expressed in the sequence and the answers to the test. The participants are two cohorts of Spanish high-school science teachers enrolled in the Master's course to earn their pre-service education license to teach in Spanish schools. The results diagnosed pre- and post-test teachers' NOS beliefs, their actual improvements, and their self-assessments of their understanding of and changes on NOS. The findings showed an overall modest improvement of teachers' NOS understanding, the differential impact of treatment across cohorts, teachers, and NOS issues, and the difficulty of the self-reflection processes to develop teachers' awareness of their NOS beliefs. Furthermore, this ability was positively and significantly related to post-test and improvement indexes. Finally, the impact, generalization, improvement, and limits of the intervention model are discussed.
