In the present work, we overview the multidisciplinary development of a regular, lubricated, hermetic compressor which works in an on-off cycle, circular motion, single-speed, many tribological contacts, into an innovative, linear motion, variable displacement, single tribological contact, oil-less hermetic compressor presenting high versatility in terms of refrigerator design, sustainability and improved efficiency. The original approach encompassed the development of new surface engineering procedures applying purpose-oriented phases to soft substrates. Particular emphasis is given to the in situ fluorination of the tribolayer formed in the piston-cylinder tribopair. Although chlorinated halocarbons (CFC) are efficient refrigerants from a thermodynamic point of view, they do have serious environmental implications that have forced the refrigeration industry to switch to more environmentally friendly hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) based refrigerants. The first and most successful alternative to the CFCs was tetrafluorocarbon, particularly tetrafluoroethane (CF3CH2F), aka R134a refrigerant. The current trend to downsizing mechanical systems, smaller clearances, and increased speeds leading to greater energy efficiencies associated with miscibility issues imposing the use of costly, fully synthetic lubricants with the R134a refrigerant gas led to the introduction of a new hermetic compressor design, the Wisemotion®, the first, and until now, unique, oil-free hermetic compressor on the world market. In this context different types of multi-layers, their thickness, substrate material, processing routes, etc., have been studied and optimized. Si-rich hydrogenated DLC (a:C-H) presented enhanced tribological properties when tested under fluorine-rich atmospheres, and semi-industrial scale tests have been carried out to understand this point further. A homemade tribological emulator was developed allowing close-to-real tribopair, atmosphere, and imposed mechanical conditions used in an oil-free commercial hermetic compressor. The tests were carried under different stroke frequencies (5, 20, and 40 Hz) and atmospheres (R134a, ambient air, and argon). Results showed a strong influence of both atmosphere and stroke frequencies. The friction coefficients were significantly lower (~3.8X) for the refrigerant gas atmosphere, attributed to the fluorine and highly disordered graphitic structures rich tribolayers. Under the high frequency (40 Hz), the energy input seems to be a deterrent to the formation of stable tribolayers, and the DLC coating shatters on the first few sliding meters.

The objective of the present work was to study the effect of heat treatments in the microstructure, graphite nodules and mechanical properties of self-lubricating steels, to achieve this, self-lubricating steels (Fe + 0.45C + 4Ni + 1Mo %wt) and additions of 2 and 3 %wt SiC were fabricated. They were consequently heat treated in 3 different conditions: martempering at 180 °C and tempering at 530 °C and 300 °C respectively and austempering at 300 °C. Hardness, yield strength, tensile strength and work hardening behavior were studied in as-sintered and heat-treated samples. The microstructure was analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and micro-hardness. The transformation temperatures were determined using dilatometric tests. Results show that the presence of dissolved Si in the matrix due to SiC dissociation notably affects the morphology of the microstructure and transformation temperatures also affecting post heat treatment mechanical properties. The structure of graphite nodules produced by SiC dissociation is nott significantly affected by the heat treatments.

Recently, we presented the tribological evaluation of self-lubricating sintered steels produced by taking advantage of the powder injection molding process, the recently introduced plasma-assisted debinding and sintering process, and the in situ formation of solid lubricant particles. This new processing route promotes the in situ generation of nanostructured turbostratic graphite particles during silicon carbide dissociation. In this work, we present the influence of surface finishing on the tribological behavior of self-lubricating composites sintered at 1150°C with (3 and 5 wt%) and without SiC additions. We discuss the effects of the surface topography (Ra) on the friction coefficient and wear rates of specimens and counterbodies. The tribological behavior was analyzed using linear reciprocating sliding tests (constant load of 7 N, 60-min duration). It was shown that the reduction in surface roughness increased both the friction coefficients and wear rates of specimens and counterbodies, probably due to plastic deformation and consequent graphite reservoir sealing. Chemical analyses of the wear scars using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis showed a tribolayer that was composed predominantly of carbon and oxygen. Analyses of the wear scars showed traces of plastic deformation on both samples and counterbodies and the predominance of abrasion as the main wear mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low-expansion iron-nickel-cobalt alloys have been widely used in industrial applications, particularly in the manufacture of hybrid components where brazing to ceramics is required. The east microstructure of these alloys is austenitic. In the present study, alloys of differing composition were produced by powder injection molding (PIM). Iron powders with different particle-size distributions were used with the objective of producing microstructures containing austenite, martensite, and ferrite without adversely affecting densification during sintering. Dilatometric behavior of the multiphase iron nickel-cobalt alloys was investigated and microstructures selected that exhibited low thermal mismatch with respect to alumina, compared with cast iron-nickel-cobalt/ alumina joints, The results delineated the required balance of phases and. consequently, the expected thermal expansion properties were achieved by introducing 20 w/o of coarse iron particles into the injection molding feedstock. Powder metallurgy is a competitive technology to produce ferrous near net shape parts for diverse engineering applications. However, their inherent porosity increases the susceptibility to oxidation and sealing their surface is mandatory to avoid premature degradation. Alongside, polymer derived ceramics (PDCs), such as silicon-carbonitride, have drawn attention concerning their high temperature and chemical stability. However, PDCs undergo volume shrinkage during ceramization that leads to defect formation. The shrinkage can be compensated by the addition of fillers, which are also capable of tailoring the ceramic resulting properties. This work evaluates the processing of PDC-based coatings loaded with ZrO2 and glass fillers to compensate for the shrinkage, densify the coating and seal the sintered steel surface. Therefore, polymeric slurries were sprayed onto sintered steel substrates, which were pyrolyzed at different temperatures for microstructural and oxidation resistance evaluation. Microstructural modifications caused by the enhanced glass viscous flow during pyrolysis at 800 °C resulted in more homogeneous, dense and protective coatings, which reduced the mass gain up to 40 wt% after 100 h of oxidation at 450 °C in air in comparison to the uncoated substrate. Moreover, no macrocracks or spallation were detected, confirming the feasibility of PDC composite barrier coatings for sintered steels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
