8. Difficulties in Emotion Regulation and Problematic Pornography Use: The Mediating Role of Loneliness.

Abstract

To analyze the association between difficulties in emotion regulation and problematic pornography use (PPU) and test the mediating effect of loneliness. All 339 participants (M = 28.53 years, SD = 10.32) completed online self-report scales assessing difficulties in emotion regulation, PPU, and loneliness. Difficulties in emotion regulation are positively correlated with PPU. Loneliness partially mediates the relationship between difficulties in emotion regulation and PPU. Gender and intimate relationship status had moderating effects on the tested mediation model. Greater difficulties in emotion regulation have a significant indirect effect on PPU through loneliness. Abstract

Therapeutic horticulture (TH) is a non-pharmacological approach to assist other psychiatric treatments and should be carried out according to organic principles for health reasons. The benefits of TH in individuals with mental health conditions can be found in the literature. However, it is scarce the information to understand if TH activities have advantages when compared to more conventional occupational therapies (OT), and this is the main objective of the present study. It was led in a psychiatric hospital in Portugal with 25 patients attending TH amongst other OT and 15 patients attending only OT. The instruments used were two questionnaires of sociodemographic and clinical data and patients’ preferences, and two evaluation instruments, the ‘Subjective Happiness Scale’ (SHS) and the short form of the ‘Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults’ (SELSA-S).The scores of the SHS and SELSA-S were generally similar for TH and OT groups, except the 'optimism about life' with a lower optimistic perception of life for the TH patients. It was found that the activities of TH were preferred to other OT by 48% of the patients in the TH group. The changes perceived by some of these TH patients included the perception of feeling more relaxed and happier. In this group, a greater number of days per week with activities provided lower loneliness and a greater happiness perspective compared to peers. For all patients, visits by family or friends also had a positive effect as revealed by the lower level of family emotional loneliness, compared to patients without visits. The findings and the benefits reported in the literature suggest that TH is an integrative treatment option, which merits further study and can be better tailored to maximize TH effectiveness.

Abstract

Introduction: Therapeutic horticulture (TH) can be considered a non-pharmacological approach to support psychiatric treatments for the improvement of physical and mental health, but information is lacking on whether it has advantages as compared to more conventional occupational therapies (OTs). Method: The study focused on institutionalized 25 clients attending TH among other OTs and 15 clients attending OT other than TH. The measures used were the 'Subjective Happiness Scale' (SHS) and the 'Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults' (SELSA-S), along with sociodemographic and clinical data. The study design was descriptive, observational and cross-sectional. Results: Scores obtained from the SHS and SELSA-S were generally similar for both groups, although 40% of clients in the TH group perceived relaxation. These are in agreement with previous studies performed with chronic schizophrenia clients reporting that TH might effectively decrease depression/anxiety symptoms, but the feeling of hopelessness and quality of life did not change, probably due to long-term institutionalization and required medication that may limit other effects. Within the TH group, clients preferred specific horticultural tasks and more days/week attending activities decreased loneliness and increased happiness. Conclusion: TH interventions as an integrative treatment option merits further study on both process and outcome evaluation, to maximize its effectiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A growing body of evidence acknowledges that cyberbullying is a public mental health issue that extends to college settings. Current literature highlights the need to conduct further research on gender differences in mental health indicators proposed by cyberbullying theoretical models in young adulthood. This study examines the specific link between victimization, gender, and self-esteem through the General Aggression Model for cyber victimization. We surveyed 796 Portuguese college students (381 females, 415 males; age range: 18–25) with the Cyberbullying Questionnaire–Victimization and the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. Over half of our sample reported victimization experiences at a given point in their lives. Male and female young adults do not differ in their involvement as victims of cyberbullying. College cyber victims reported less self-esteem than non-involved students. Only self-esteem emerged as a significant predictor of cyber victimization. Current findings deepen our knowledge of the negative impact cyberbullying has on the mental health of college students and offer empirical support to the development of prevention and intervention strategies focusing on the psychological maladjustment of young adults regardless of their gender. Abstract

Perceived stress is strongly associated with sleep problems. Despite the evidence linking these variables, research examining the reciprocal relationships between them using non-recursive models, which include feedback loop between endogenous variables, is lacking. The main objective was to analyse if there is a bidirectional relation between perceived stress and insomnia symptoms with a model using coping and quality of life as predictors of both variables. This is a cross-sectional study with a sample of 987 adults with insomnia symptoms (M = 40.90 years old; SD = 17.17). An exploratory Canonical Correlation Analysis assessed the interrelationships between a set of perceived stress and insomnia symptoms and a set of coping and quality of life variables. Structural Equation Modelling was used to explore the bidirectional relationships between perceived stress and insomnia symptoms, using coping strategies and quality of life as covariates. The first correlation (0.562), dominated by perceived stress, suggested a direct association with insomnia symptoms. The second correlation (0.146), dominated by insomnia symptoms, suggested a reverse association with perceived stress. The model showed good model fit indices (χ2(6) = 4.505, GFI = 0.999; RMSEA = 0.000 [CI 90% 0.000–0.035]). Self-blame, positive reframing, denial, self-distraction, social relationships, and environment were significant predictors of perceived stress; Denial and environment significantly predicted insomnia symptoms. Regarding the bidirectional relationship only perceived stress was a predictor of insomnia symptoms (β = 0.42, p ≤ 0.001). Insomnia symptoms depend on perceived stress, but no evidence of the direct effect of insomnia symptoms on perceived stress was observed. Although the bidirectional relationship has not been confirmed, this study supports the role of perceived stress in the management of insomnia symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. Suporte social e stress em fámílias de indivíduos com paralisia cerebral - impacto das habilitações literárias dos familiares e do nível funcional dos pacientes

Abstract

Este artigo analisa, através de um estudo empírico, alguns aspectos do suporte social e dos níveis de stress, em famílias de pessoas com Paralisia Cerebral. Analisa-se o impacto da escolaridade no suporte social percebido e do grau de autonomia funcional (em locomoção, alimentação e higiene) nos níveis de stress. A recolha de dados é feita através de duas escalas: Escala de Satisfação com o Suporte Social (Pais-Ribeiro, 1999) e a adaptação portuguesa (Silva et. al, 2003) da Life Esperiences Survey (Sarason, Johnson, & Siegel, 1978). Os resultados indicam que cuidadores com baixas habilitações e no outro extremo os cuidados com habilitações elevadas, se isolam mais e têm menor apoio social emocional que os cuidadores de habilitações médias.
