Os estudos que envolvem a relação entre a pessoa com Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo (TEA) e as Tecnologias Assistivas ainda são incipientes no que tangem aos dispositivos que favorecem o desenvolvimento da comunicação alternativa dos autistas. Para tanto, identificar as necessidades específicas de aprendizagem para esse tipo de deficiência requer o desenvolvimento de estudos e pesquisas que facilitem o estabelecimento dessa comunicação e facultem a inclusão dessas pessoas na sua relação ensino-aprendizagem. O Ambiente Digital de Aprendizagem para Crianças Autistas - ADACA, é um projeto de pesquisa e extensão que está sendo realizado na Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), onde são desenvolvidas ferramentas computacionais com o objetivo de auxiliar na aprendizagem da criança com autismo, contribuindo para a inclusão digital dessas crianças. O TEA consiste em um distúrbio que engloba o comprometimento nas áreas relacionadas à comunicação, à interação e às ações simbólicas. Além disso, compromete o comportamento geral e o desenvolvimento neuropsicológico da pessoa com TEA. Nesse sentido, a equipe do projeto ADACA vem desenvolvendo jogos e atividades educacionais de acesso gratuito para diferentes plataformas computacionais. Os jogos e atividades educativas são testados e analisados pelas crianças com autismo no LADACA (Laboratório do Ambiente Digital de Aprendizagem para Crianças Autistas) o qual é dividido em três ambientes (Lúdico, Computacional e Gerenciamento). Foram desenvolvidos também jogos e aplicativos para dispositivos móveis, para que sejam usados onde a criança estiver. Trata-se de um projeto interdisciplinar envolvendo as áreas de Ciências da Computação, Fonoaudiologia e Psicologia e do desenvolvimento da aprendizagem, gerando dados para se pensar em estratégias de intervenção e atuação com pessoas com TEA que favoreçam sua interação e desenvolvimento com as habilidades e competências que lhe concernem.

Cardioviruses cause serious disease, mainly in rodents, including diabetes, myocarditis, encephalomyelitis, and multiple sclerosis-like disseminated encephalomyelitis. Recently, a human virus isolate obtained 25 years ago, termed Saffold virus, was sequenced and classified as a cardiovirus. We conducted systematic molecular screening for Saffold-like viruses in 844 fecal samples from patients with gastroenteritis from Germany and Brazil, across all age groups. Six cardioviruses were identified in patients <6 years of age. Viral loads were 283,305-5,044,412,175 copies/g of stool. Co-infections occurred in 4 of 6 children. No evidence for outbreak-like epidemic patterns was found. Phylogenetic analysis identified 3 distinct genetic lineages. Viral protein 1 amino acids were 67.9%-77.7% identical and had a distance of at least 39.4% from known cardioviruses. Because closely related strains were found on 2 continents, global distribution in humans is suspected. Saffold-like viruses may be the first human cardiovirus species to be identified. The genus Wittmackia has 44 species distributed in two centers of diversity: the Brazilian clade and the Caribbean clade. The Brazilian clade includes 29 species, with geographic distribution concentrated in the Northeast of Brazil. This study reports the morphology, ultrastructure, pollen viability and stigma receptivity by different microscopy techniques of 23 species of the genus Wittmackia endemic to Brazil and occurring in Atlantic Forest areas. Pollen morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy by the weak lactic acetolysis method. Histochemical tests were performed with Alexander's solution and fluorescein diacetate. For in vitro germination of pollen grains, two culture media were evaluated. Stigma receptivity was evaluated with hydrogen peroxide and α-naphthyl acetate. The Wittmackia genus presented biporate pollen grains, monads to tetrads, with oblate, suboblate or oblate-spheroidal shape, circular or elliptical scope, and heteropolar or sub-isopolar morphology. The stigmas are of the conduplicate-spiral type, with differences in color and size. In both histochemical tests, high viability was observed, mainly at anthesis, coinciding with in vitro germination. The species presented high enzymatic activity during receptivity, with a very strong positive response, mainly at anthesis. Studies of pollen morphology and viability provide important information for the conservation and genetic improvement of Wittmackia species, also assisting in the taxonomy of the genus and the reproductive success of future controlled crosses., (© 2025 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Anaerobic digestion of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) offers an environmentally friendly alternative for waste disposal, converting it into methane for energy recovery. Typically, FVW digestion is conducted in a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) due to its ease of use and stability with solid concentrations between 5 and 10%. However, CSTRs are limited to organic loading rates (OLRs) of about 3 kg COD/m 3 .day, resulting in large reactor volumes, low methane productivity, and costly wet digestate handling. This work introduces a novel method for methane production from FVW using a high-rate reactor system. The proposed approach involves grinding, centrifuging, and/or pressing the FVW to separate it into liquid and solid phases. The liquid phase is then digested in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, while the solid phase undergoes digestion in a dry methanization reactor. A model incorporating all biological reactors was implemented in the Anaerobic Digestion Model 1 (ADM1) to provide a theoretical basis for the experimental development of this system. The current simulation scenarios offer initial references for operating the experimental system, which will, in turn, generate data for further model refinement. For instance, constrained liquid-gas mass transfer was considered for dry fermentation, with additional potential biochemical kinetic limitations to be incorporated following on experimental evidence. Triatominae are recognized as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan which is the etiological agent of Chagas disease. A specimen of Triatoma delpontei was found at Porto Murtinho in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. This is the first report of the occurrence of T. delpontei to the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. With the present finding, the total number of triatomines recorded in Mato do Grosso do Sul reaches 17 species, while T. delpontei, previously recorded only from Rio Grande do Sul, is now recorded to a second Brazilian state. Based on the information available in the literature, a meticulous and organized compilation has been crafted, highlighting the cytogenetics differentiations of the species occurring in this state. This work emphasizes the importance of continuous research and surveillance on Triatominae, recognized as vectors of T. cruzi.

Anaerobic digestion has emerged as the most appealing waste management strategy in biorefineries. Particularly, recent studies have highlighted the energy advantages of waste co-digestion in industrial biorefineries and the use of two-stage systems. However, there are some concerns about moving the system from laboratory testing to industrial scale. One of them is the high level of investment that is required. Therefore, this study carried out a techno-economic analysis (scale-up and energy production, economic and risk analysis, and factorial design) to assess the feasibility of single- and two-stage systems in the treatment of cheese whey and glycerin for the production of hydrogen and methane. Scenarios (S1 to S9) considered thermophilic and mesophilic single and two-stage systems with different applied organic loading rates (OLR A ). The analyses of scale-up and energy production revealed that S3 (a thermophilic single-stage system operated at high OLR A 17.3 kg-COD.m -3 .d -1 ) and S9 (a thermophilic-mesophilic two-stage system operated at high OLR A 134.8 kg-COD.m -3 .d -1 and 20.5 kg-COD.m -3 .d -1 , respectively) were more compact and required lower initial investment compared to other scenarios. The risk analysis performed by a Monte Carlo simulation showed low investment risks (10 and 11%) for S3 and S9, respectively, being the electricity sales price, the key determining factor to define whether the project in the baseline scenario will result in profit or loss. Lastly, the factorial design revealed that while the net present value (NPV) is positively impacted by rising inflation and electricity sales price, it is negatively impacted by rising capitalization rate. Sugarcane vinasse exits the distillation process at high temperatures, which may differ from the optimal temperatures for dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion. A 15 °C temperature increase, for example, stops sugarcane vinasse methane generation, making distillery vinasse digestion complicated. Conversely, in other aspects, co-digesting vinasse and glycerol has been proven to stabilize methane production from vinasse because of sulfate dilution. However, glycerol has not been tested to stabilize vinasse digestion under temperature changes. Thus, this study compared the effects of different temperature settings on the co-digestion of 10 g COD L -1 of vinasse and glycerol (50 %:50 % on a COD basis) in anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (AFBR), i.e., an acidogenic and a methanogenic one-stage AFBRs operated at 55, 60, and 65 °C, and two methanogenic AFBRs fed both with acidogenic effluent (one operated at room temperature (25 °C) and the other at 55, 60, and 65 °C). The co-digestion provided steady methane generation at all AFBRs, with methane production rates ranging from 2.27 to 2.93 L CH 4 d -1  L -1 , whether in one or two stages. A feature of this research was to unravel the black box of the role of sulfate in the digestion of sugarcane vinasse, which was rarely studied. Desulfovibrio was the primary genus degrading 1,3-propanediol into 3-hydroxypropanoate after genome sequencing. Phosphate acetyltransferase (EC: 2.3.1.8, K00625) and acetate kinase (EC: 2.7.2.1, K00925) genes were also found, suggesting propionate was metabolized. In practical aspects, regarding the two-stage systems, the thermophilic-mesophilic (acidogenic-methanogenic) configuration is best for extracting additional value-added products because 1,3-propanediol may be recovered at high yields with steady methane production at reduced energy expenditure in a reactor operated at room temperature. Background: Here, Leishmania presence in sand flies from Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, after visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was investigated., Methods: In April 2022, two light traps were deployed within and around the residence for two days post-VL case report., Results: A total of 120 Lutzomyia longipalpis were collected. Suprapyloric flagellates were found in a female sand fly with eggs and residual blood during midgut dissection. Sequencing of ITS1 and cytb fragments confirmed Leishmania infantum DNA and identified Homo sapiens as the blood source, respectively., Conclusions: This study emphasizes the importance of monitoring sand flies in VL endemic areas.

In this study, we investigated the presence of Leishmania in sand flies collected from a peridomestic area in Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul, after an autochthonous case of cutaneous leishmaniasis was confirmed. A total of 1,542 sand flies belonging to seven species were collected, with Lu. cruzi being the most prevalent (94.3%). We detected the presence of DNA from Le. infantum (7 pools) and Le. braziliensis (3 pools) by sequencing the ITS1 amplicon in ten pools, all of which were composed of engorged (3) and non-engorged (7) females of Lu. cruzi. We collected 24 engorged females, with Homo sapiens being the most common blood meal source (91.6%), followed by Dasyprocta azarae and Canis lupus familiaris (4.2% each). To our knowledge, this is the first molecular evidence of Le. braziliensis in wild-caught Lu. cruzi in Brazil, suggesting its potential role as a vector for this parasite., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare no conflicts of interest. Objective: Investigate the prevalence of postural changes and correlate them with body weight and the weight of schoolchildren's backpacks in a school in the city of São João del-Rei-MG. Material and., Methods: The study is an original type, with a cross-sectional design, where 109 schoolchildren of both sexes and mean age of 13 years were evaluated. The New York scale was used for posture analysis, measuring body weight, height, backpack weight, and Body Mass Index (BMI). The ANOVA statistical test and Pearson's correlation test were used, considering a significance level of 0.05., Results: According to the results, the general average of the scores of postural problems was 68.7 points, with a predominance in the head, spine, hips, trunk, and abdomen. The regions of shoulder, feet, and neck presented mean scores below seven. The mean height was 1.61 m, body weight 56.03 kg, backpack weight 4.49 kg and BMI was 21.51 kg/m., Conclusion: Postural alterations are highly prevalent among the evaluated students. The most affected body segments are the head, spine, hips, trunk, and abdomen. However, this finding was not related to the weight of the backpacks or the students' body weight. However, different parameters must be used to analyze the factors that may be related to such findings, such as ergonomic changes, inadequate habits, growth spurt, among others. Anaerobic digestion for CH 4 recovery in wastewater treatment has been carried out with different strategies to increase process efficiency, among which co-digestion and the two-stage process can be highlighted. In this context, this study aimed at evaluating the co-digestion of cheese whey and glycerol in a two-stage process using fluidized bed reactors, verifying the effect of increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) (2-20 g-COD.L -1 .d -1 ) and temperature (thermophilic and mesophilic) in the second stage methanogenic reactor. The mesophilic methanogenic reactor (R-Meso) (mean temperature of 22 °C) was more tolerant to high OLR and its best performance was at 20 g-COD.L -1 .d -1 , resulting in methane yield (MY) and methane production (MPR) of 273 mL-CH 4 .g-COD -1 and 5.8 L-CH 4 .L -1 .d -1 (with 67% of CH 4 ), respectively. Through 16S rRNA gene massive sequencing analysis, a greater diversity of microorganisms was identified in R-Meso than in R-Thermo (second stage methanogenic reactor, 55 °C). Firmicutes was the phyla with higher relative abundance in R-Thermo, while in R-Meso the most abundant ones were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. Regarding the Archaea domain, a predominance of hydrogenotrophic microorganisms could be observed, being the genera Methanothermobacter and Methanobacterium the most abundant in R-Thermo and R-Meso, respectively. Background: In the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, sand flies and cases of visceral (VL) and cutaneous (CL) leishmaniases have been reported in almost all municipalities. The aim of this study was to analyze the geographic distribution of VL and CL in relation the sand fly species found in the municipalities of Mato Grosso do Sul., Methods: We analyzed VL and CL cases from 2001 to 2018 using data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). Data collected since 2003 on the presence of sand fly vectors (proven or suspected) were provided by the State Health Secretariat., Results: A total of 3566 and 3030 cases of VL and CL, respectively, were reported from 2001 to 2018. The municipalities with the most reported cases of VL were Campo Grande (2495), Três Lagoas (442), Corumbá (140) and Aquidauana (136); and those for CL were Campo Grande (635) and Bodoquena (197). The following sand fly species with vector potential were found in 59 municipalities (74.7%): Lutzomyia longipalpis, Lutzomyia cruzi, Nyssomyia whitmani, Migonemyia migonei, Nyssomyia neivai, Pintomyia pessoai, Bichromomyia flaviscutellata and Pintomyia fischeri. Sand flies were present in six municipalities where no cases of VL were reported and in two municipalities where no cases of CL were reported., Conclusions: Our results indicate that the geographical distribution of VL and CL in Mato Grosso do Sul expanded during the study period, and highlight the presence of sand fly vectors in municipalities where these diseases are currently considered to be non-endemic., (© 2022. Studies of the geographic distribution of sand flies and the factors associated with their occurrence are necessary to understand the risk of leishmaniasis transmission. The objective of this study was to characterize the sand fly fauna, particularly the spatial distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva), and correlate these with climate factors in the Dourados municipality, Brazil. The collection of sand flies was carried out with CDC Light Traps over two periods: at six sites for three consecutive nights each month from August 2012 to July 2013; and at four other sites for two consecutive nights each month from April 2017 to February 2018. We collected 591 sand flies in the first period and 121 in the second period for a total of 712 sand flies; 697 of the total collected were Lu. longipalpis. The minimum and maximum sand fly infestation rate (sites with vector presence) was 11.1% and 83.33% in the first period, and 0% and 50.0% in the second period. No sand flies with Leishmania were identified via PCR. Lu. longipalpis presented an aggregate disposition with excellent adjustment. Rainfall and relative humidity were the abiotic factors that influenced the vector infestation level. The aggregate distribution for this species was predicted by the environmental factors that favor the proliferation of Lu. longipalpis. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of chronic exposure to traffic from a heavy-duty diesel-fueled vehicle area on respiratory symptoms and airway inflammation in a nonsmoking adult and elderly population. Respiratory symptoms were evaluated by the ISAAC questionnaire (International Study of Asthma and Allergies questionnaire), and airway inflammation was assessed by fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO). Forty volunteers were selected from the 112 volunteers who completed the ISAAC questionnaire for the measurement of FeNO. The FeNO population comprised seven men (six aged ≥ 64 years old, four aged ≥ 75 years old) and 32 women (27 aged ≥ 64 years old, nine aged ≥ 75 years old). FeNO levels were tracked for six months, from November 2014 to June 2015. Results: Twenty-four percent of the volunteers reported having had wheezing in the chest in the last 12 months. However, only 2.7% of the volunteers reported doctor-diagnosed asthma. There was a positive association between FeNO and pollutants in most of the study months. An increase of 1 μg m -3 in NO 2 was associated with a mean increase of 1.08 ppb in FeNO, and an increase of 1 μg m -3 in O 3 was associated with a mean increase of 1.06 ppb in FeNO. The relative risk for NO 2 ranged from 1.009 to 1.32 and that for O 3 ranged from 1.014 to 1.020. Conclusion: The frequency of respiratory symptoms was much higher than the previously described levels of 6% in the Brazilian adult population. In summary, a high frequency of respiratory symptoms and high levels of FeNO were described in an underdiagnosed adult population living very close to a heavy-duty diesel-traffic area. The interior of caves usually presents climate, light, soil, flora and fauna that distinguish it from the external environment. Among the sandfly species found in caves, several may act as vectors of Leishmania spp. and others are a nuisance to humans due to their painful bites. This study sought to identify the phlebotomine fauna in a cavern with cave paintings ("Gruta do Pitoco") which attract tourists in Alcinopólis municipality, Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. The sandflies were collected from March 2014 to September 2015, with automatic light traps, installed monthly, in the entrance and interior of the cave and outside it. A total of 7645 specimens belonging to 27 species were collected. Lutzomyia dispar, Martinsmyia oliverai and those of the Lu. longipalpis complex (Lu. cruzi and Lu. longipalpis) were the predominant species. Among the three environments sampled, no great difference between species richness was observed. Comparing these environments, the interior of the cave presented the lowest diversity index due to the high frequency of Lu. dispar (46%). For the first time, specimens (only females) of the genus Deanemyia were collected in Mato Grosso do Sul state. Moreover, the study revealed the sympatric occurrence of Lu. cruzi and Lu. longipalpis, both proven vectors of L. infantum, and also Lu. dispar, a highly anthropophilic species, which often causes annoyance to those who visit the cave., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Leishmaniases are endemic in Brazil, where Leishmania infantum has been detected in humans, dogs, cats, and phlebotomine vectors. Monitoring synanthropic vector populations is critical for leishmaniasis control-surveillance in such transmission-prone areas. Here, a suite of molecular approaches were used to assess Leishmania infection prevalence and to identify blood-meal sources in a large sample of sand flies collected in anthropic environments of a Leishmania-transmission area in Mato Grosso do Sul State (Rio Verde de Mato Grosso municipality), Central-West Brazil. We sampled sand flies monthly (January-June 2014 and 2016) in one peri-domestic site within each of six neighborhoods with recent records of human visceral and/or tegumentary leishmaniasis. kDNA-qPCR plus rDNA ITS-sequencing were used to detect and identify Leishmania in pooled female sand flies. Individual engorged females (n = 58) were used for blood-meal analyses through High-Resolution Melting (HRM) targeting the mtDNA cytb gene. Overall, 90.5% of 420 CDC trap-nights yielded vectors, for a total catch of 24,989 sand flies. We sub-sampled and identified 3088 sand flies of 12 species, including 2775 Lutzomyia longipalpis (the most abundant species at all sampling sites) and 297 Nyssomyia whitmani. Female sand flies (n = 1261) were grouped in 159 pools, of which 92 Lu. longipalpis (minimum infection rate [MIR] 8%) and 7 Ny. whitmani pools (MIR 7%) were Leishmania kDNA-positive. Most positive Lu. longipalpis were collected in the 2016 rainy season. Sequencing confirmed L. infantum in Lu. longipalpis samples. HRM analyses identified chicken DNA in 57 sand flies (98.3%), 37 of which were Leishmania DNA-positive (64.9%); human blood was found in just one (Leishmania-negative) female. Thermoliquefaction of palm oil fiber was investigated using supercritical ethanol as solvent. A semi-continuous laboratory scale unit was developed to investigate the effects of temperature (300-500°C), heating rate (10-30°C.min -1 ) and cracking time (10-30min) on the conversion of biomass in bio-oil. The main advantage of the proposed process is that a pure solvent is pumping through the reactor that contains the biomass, dispensing the use of biomass slurries. The yield of bio-oil ranged from 56% to 84%, depending on the experimental conditions. It was observed that an increase in working temperature led to an increase in the bio-oil production. Cracking time and heating rate variation had not shown a considerable effect on the conversion of biomass. The chemical profiles of bio-oil determined by GC/MS, indicate that at low temperature mainly sugar derivatives are produced, while at higher temperatures alcohols and phenolic are the majority compounds of the bio-oil., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction: The diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infections depends on the parasite load, the specific gravity density of the parasite eggs, oocysts or cysts, and the density and viscosity of flotation or sedimentation medium where faeces are processed., Objective: To evaluate the concordance between zinc sulphate flotation and centrifugal sedimentation in the recovery of parasites in faecal samples of children., Materials and Methods: Faecal samples of 330 children from day care centers were evaluated by zinc sulphate flotation and centrifugal sedimentation techniques. The frequencies of detection of parasites by each method were determined and the agreement between the diagnostic techniques was evaluated using the kappa index, with 95% confidence intervals., Results: The faecal flotation in zinc sulphate diagnosed significantly more cases of Trichuris trichiura infection when compared to centrifugal sedimentation (39/330; 11.8% vs. 13/330; 3.9%, p<0.001), with low diagnostic concordance between methods (kappa=0.264; 95% CI: 0.102-0.427). Moreover, all positive samples for Enterobius vermicularis eggs (n=5) and Strongyloides stercoralis larvae (n=3) were diagnosed only by zinc sulphate. No statistical differences were observed between methods for protozoa identification., Conclusions: The results showed that centrifugal flotation in zinc sulphate solution was significantly more likely to detect light helminths eggs such as those of T. trichiura and E. vermicularis in faeces than the centrifugal sedimentation process.

This study updates the geographic distributions of phlebotomine species in Central-West Brazil and analyses the climatic factors associated with their occurrence. The data were obtained from the entomology services of the state departments of health in Central-West Brazil, scientific collections and a literature review of articles from 1962-2014. Ecological niche models were produced for sandfly species with more than 20 occurrences using the Maxent algorithm and eight climate variables. In all, 2,803 phlebotomine records for 127 species were analysed. Nyssomyia whitmani, Evandromyia lenti and Lutzomyia longipalpis were the species with the greatest number of records and were present in all the biomes in Central-West Brazil. The models, which were produced for 34 species, indicated that the Cerrado areas in the central and western regions of Central-West Brazil were climatically more suitable to sandflies. The variables with the greatest influence on the models were the temperature in the coldest months and the temperature seasonality. The results show that phlebotomine species in Central-West Brazil have different geographical distribution patterns and that climate conditions in essentially the entire region favour the occurrence of at least one Leishmania vector species, highlighting the need to maintain or intensify vector control and surveillance strategies.

Background: The genus Evandromyia is widely found in Brazil, but occurs mainly in Brazilian savannah. To date 13 species have been described in the subgenus Aldamyia. Here we described a new species of Evandromyia (Aldamyia) collected in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil., Methods: Measurements were made using a micrometer eyepiece on an Olympus CH-2 binocular microscope and drawings were executed with the aid of a camera lucida., Results: The new species, Evandromyia orcyi sp. nov., is closely related to Evandromyia lenti, Evandromyia carmelinoi and Evandromyia evandroi, however, characteristics of the male terminalia and female spermathecae distinguish it from other species of the genus Evandromyia., Conclusion: With the description of Evandromyia orcyi sp. nov., six species of the subgenus Aldamyia have been reported from the State of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Affinity chromatography (AC) is one of the most important techniques for the separation and purification of biomolecules, being probably the most selective technique for protein purification. It is based on unique specific reversible interactions between the target molecule and a ligand. In this affinity interaction, the choice of the ligand is extremely important for the success of the purification protocol. The growing interest in AC has motivated an intense research effort toward the development of materials able to overcome the disadvantages of conventional natural ligands, namely their high cost and chemical and biological lability. In this context, synthetic dyes have emerged, in recent decades, as a promising alternative to biological ligands. Herein, detailed protocols for the assembling of a new chromatographic dye-ligand affinity support bearing an immobilized aminosquarylium cyanine dye on an agarose-based matrix (Sepharose CL-6B) and for the separation of a mixture o f three standard proteins: lysozyme, α-chymotrypsin, and trypsin are provided.

To understand the geographic distribution of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Brazil, both the climatic niches of Lutzomyia longipalpis and VL cases were analysed. Distributional data were obtained from 55 of the 79 counties of MS between 2003-2012. Ecological niche models (ENM) of Lu. longipalpis and VL cases were produced using the maximum entropy algorithm based on eight climatic variables. Lu. longipalpis showed a wide distribution in MS. The highest climatic suitability for Lu. longipalpis was observed in southern MS. Temperature seasonality and annual mean precipitation were the variables that most influenced these models. Two areas of high climatic suitability for the occurrence of VL cases were predicted: one near Aquidauana and another encompassing several municipalities in the southeast region of MS. As expected, a large overlap between the models for Lu. longipalpis and VL cases was detected. Northern and northwestern areas of MS were suitable for the occurrence of cases, but did not show high climatic suitability for Lu. longipalpis. ENM of vectors and human cases provided a greater understanding of the geographic distribution of VL in MS, which can be applied to the development of future surveillance strategies.

Introduction: A sero-epidemiological survey was undertaken to detect the circulation of arboviruses in free-living non-human primates., Methods: Blood samples were obtained from 16 non-human primates (13 Sapajus spp. and three Alouatta caraya) that were captured using terrestrial traps and anesthetic darts in woodland regions in the municipalities of Campo Grande, Aquidauana, Jardim, Miranda and Corumbá in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The samples were sent to the Instituto Evandro Chagas (IEC) in Ananindeua, Pará, Brazil, to detect antibodies against 19 species of arboviruses using a hemagglutination inhibition test (HI)., Results: Of the 16 primates investigated in the present study, five (31.2%) were serologically positive for an arbovirus. Of these five, two (12.5%) exhibited antibodies to the Flavivirus genus, one (6.2%) exhibited a monotypic reaction to Cacipacoré virus, one (6.2%) was associated with Mayaro virus, and one (6.2%) was positive for Oropouche virus., Conclusions: Based on the positive serology observed in the present study, it was possible to conclude that arboviruses circulate among free-living primates. The viruses in the areas studied might have been introduced by infected humans or by primates from endemic or enzootic areas. Studies of this nature, as well as efficient and continuous surveillance programs, are needed to monitor viral activities in endemic and enzootic regions.

We estimated the geographic distributions of triatomine species in Central-West Region of Brazil (CW) and analysed the climatic factors influencing their occurrence. A total of 3,396 records of 27 triatomine species were analysed. Using the maximum entropy method, ecological niche models were produced for eight species occurring in at least 20 municipalities based on 13 climatic variables and elevation. Triatoma sordida and Rhodnius neglectus were the species with the broadest geographic distributions in CW Brazil. The Cerrado areas in the state of Goiás were found to be more suitable for the occurrence of synanthropic triatomines than the Amazon forest areas in the northern part of the state of Mato Grosso. The variable that best explains the evaluated models is temperature seasonality. The results indicate that almost the entire region presents climatic conditions that are appropriate for at least one triatomine species. Therefore, it is recommended that entomological surveillance be reinforced in CW Brazil.

To determine possible cosavirus association with clinical disease, we used real-time reverse transcription PCR to test children and HIV-positive adults in Brazil with and without gastroenteritis. Thirteen (3.6%) of 359 children with gastroenteritis tested positive, as did 69 (33.8%) of 204 controls. Low prevalence, frequent viral co-infections, and low fecal cosavirus RNA concentrations argue against human pathogenicity.

Due to high genome plasticity, the evolutionary fate and geographical history of picornaviruses is hard to follow. Here, we determined the complete coding sequences of eight human parechoviruses (HPeV) of types 1, 5 and 6 directly from clinical samples from Brazil. The capsid genes of these strains were not remarkably different from European, North American and Japanese HPeV. Full genome analysis revealed frequent intertypic recombination in the non-structural genome region. In addition, evidence of recombination between viruses of the same type in the capsid-encoding genome region among HPeV1 and HPeV4 was obtained. Bayesian phylogenetic analysis indicated that strains without evidence of recombination with each other in any genome region were separated by no more than 35 years of circulation. Interestingly, in the 3C gene, all Brazilian parechoviruses grouped together regardless of serotype. The most recent common ancestor of these strains dated back 108 years, suggesting long-term endemicity of this particular P3 genome lineage in South America. Our results support the idea that picornavirus replicative genes acquire capsid proteins introduced by new strains. Under certain epidemiological conditions, replicative genes may be maintained in circumscript geographical regions.

Introduction: Triatoma sordida Stål, 1859 populations were investigated for susceptibility to deltamethrin., Methods: This study aimed to analyze the resistance of 11 populations of insects from the States of Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul by topical application bioassays., Results: The estimated LD50 and RR50 showed high levels of susceptibility (LD50 < 1 and RR50 < 2). However, analysis of the slope of the dose response curve showed that the populations of insects in the towns of Firminópolis/GO, Posse/GO, Poxoréu/MT, Douradina/MS and Aparecida do Taboado/MS present great probability of evolving resistance and, thus, are more likely to tolerate treatment with deltamethrin., Conclusions: Small changes in susceptibility and low levels of resistance were detected, but the temporal changes of susceptibility should be continuously monitored to adequately guide the actions of vector-control of DC.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to carry out an analysis of urban phlebotomine fauna and a survey of infestations (intradomiciliary and peridomiciliary) in Ponta Porã municipality State of Mato Grosso do Sul., Methods: Sand flies were collected with automatic CDC light traps, installed monthly on three consecutive nights, from 18 h to 6h, from September 2005 to September 2007., Results: A total of 3,946 phlebotomines, representing eight species, were captured, among which was a large predominance of Lutzomyia longipalpis, presenting high indexes of frequency, constancy, abundance and dominance. Of the total, 82.9% were males and 17.1% females. The monthly average number (136.29 ± 152.01) of males captured being, much larger than that of females. Although the average number of phlebotomines in the intradomicile was much larger than that in the peridomicile, there was no significant statistical difference. A positive correlation was found between the abundance of phlebotomines and the average daily maximum temperature, precipitation and relative atmospheric humidity., Conclusions: The predominance of Lutzomyia longipalpis in Ponta Porã municipality is a reason for concern as regards the possibility of outbreaks of visceral leishmaniasis in the area, because this species is the main Leishmania chagasi vector not only in Mato Grosso do Sul but also nationwide.

This study identified the complete genomic sequence of four type 2 and type 3 human Saffold-like cardioviruses (SLCVs) isolated in Germany and Brazil. The secondary structures of the SLCV internal ribosome entry sites (IRESs) were deduced based on RNA base-pairing conservation and co-variation, using an established Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) IRES structure as a reference. The SLCV IRES was highly similar to that of TMEV, but motifs critical in TMEV for binding of the polypyrimidine tract-binding protein (PTB) were disrupted. In TMEV, corresponding alterations have been associated with reduced neurovirulence in mice. In the non-structural genome region, there was evidence of multiple intertypic recombination events between different SLCV types. Between viruses of the same type, recombination also occurred in the capsid-encoding genome region. There were apparently no recombination events between mouse TMEV and human SLCV. In another genus of the family Picornaviridae, Enterovirus, natural recombination occurs strictly within species and can serve as an additional criterion for delimiting species. Accordingly, the results of this study suggest that SLCV and TMEV may represent distinct species within the genus Cardiovirus.

This paper describes the occurrence of Psammolestes coreodes Bergroth, 1911, for the first time in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. In 2006, a specimen was caught in a peridomestic environment in the municipality of Miranda, thereby including Mato Grosso do Sul within the geographical distribution of this species.

Human parechoviruses (HPeVs) were detected by reverse transcription-PCR in 16.1% of 335 stool samples from children <6 years of age with enteritis in Salvador, Brazil. Whole genome sequencing of 1 sample showed a novel HPeV that has been designated as HPeV8.

Between 2000 and 2004, a survey of Triatominae fauna (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and examination of natural infection caused by Trypanosomatidae in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, was conducted. A total of 13,671 specimens were collected. Through fauna analysis on the insects that were caught, Triatoma sordida was characterized as very abundant, very frequent, constant and dominant. The rates of natural infection with Trypanosoma cruzi were 3.2% for Panstrongylus geniculatus, 0.6% for Rhodnius neglectus and 0.1% for Triatoma sordida. Nevertheless, the State of Mato Grosso do Sul is free from endemic vector transmission.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are tumors of mesodermal origin, comprising about 1% of all adult neoplasms. Management of such tumors is an important medical challenge. TP53 codon 72 polymorphism results in either the arginine or proline form of the p53 protein; several studies have investigated whether codon 72 polymorphisms are risk and prognostic factors for cancer. We investigated p53 codon 72 polymorphism (Arg72Pro) frequencies with respect to the susceptibility and the clinical outcome of patients with STS. A series of 100 STS were genotyped for the p53 Arg72Pro polymorphism using polymerase chain reaction. Genotype frequencies were compared to a group of 85 healthy donors (controls). Possible associations between polymorphic genotypes, clinicopathological factors and survival of STS patients were also investigated. Genotypic frequencies obtained for STS patients did not significantly differ from that obtained for controls. In the STS group, p53 codon 72 polymorphic variants were not significantly associated with gender, age, tumor size, clinical stage, tumor grade, histology, or nodal or distant metastasis. The five-year overall survival rate for the STS group was 48%; it was significantly affected by tumor grade, clinical stage, and nodal and distant metastasis. Soft tissue sarcoma patients with the Pro/Pro variant had a reduced survival rate (30%), when compared to the p53 Arg/Arg (45%) and the p53 Arg/Pro groups (55%). However, the differences between these groups were not significant (P = 0.44).

The first occurrence of Panstrongylus guentheri Berg in Brazil is presented. This species had been reported only in the territories of Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Uruguay. We have extended the geographic distribution of this Triatominae, with two specimens captured in Bodoquena and Itaporã cities, both in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. These specimens were found in the intradomestic environment.

Objective: To investigate the spatial distribution of Aedes albopictus population to provide input for developing sampling plans and supporting decision making on the control of this vector in field sampling., Methods: A study was carried out in an urban area that has a vestige of primary vegetation, 20 km away from Dourados, Midwestern Brazil. Ten samplings were conducted between January 28, 2003 and April 9, 2003, using ovitraps which were monitored once a week, and distributed in a fixed sample area with 10 collection points for each sampling 300 m away from each other. Aggregation indexes were calculated and adjusted to the following theoretical frequency distribution: negative binomial, positive binomial and Poisson's., Results: The sample variance was higher than the sampling mean, resulting in mean-variance indexes above the unit (32.066, 29.410, 14.444, 58.840, 56.042, 111.262, 70.140, 50.701, 93.221 and 8.481). Morisita's index was also statistically above the unit in all samplings (6.275, 3.947, 1.484, 3.725, 3.014, 5.450, 3.214, 3.886, 3.954 and 5.810), and K parameter ranged 0 and 8 (0.174, 0.309, 1.867, 0.332, 0.449, 0.203, 0.408, 0.314, 0.306 and 0.200). The Chi-square test for adjustment to the negative binomial distribution, positive binomial distribution, and Poisson's distribution was not statistically significant., Conclusions: Ae. albopictus population in the studied municipality showed an aggregated standard spatial distribution. This means that when individual vectors are found in a certain site, it is likely that other vectors can be found in the proximities, recommending insecticide spraying for vector control in this site without requiring sampling other sites in this same locality.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report is to describe the clinical characteristics and histological abnormalities on full-thickness intestinal biopsy in seven children from the Gastroenterology (GI) outpatient clinic. METHODS: A retrospective study of all patients who attended the GI outpatient clinic in the last ten years. The medical records of seven patients were reviewed, and all the relevant clinical data recorded. Diagnosis was based on clinical, laboratorial, and histological findings. CONCLUSION: Although this is a rare syndrome, the differential diagnosis shall be performed whenever the patient presents signs and symptoms of obstruction along the digestive tract with no association of any mechanical cause. Studies shall be encouraged regarding the precocious and accurate diagnosis, using less invasive techniques and specific therapeutics (both clinical and surgical), in order to improve life quality and extended survival of affected patients.

Objective: To evaluate the cardiac abnormalities and their evolution during the course of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, as well as to correlate clinical and pathological data., Methods: Twenty-one patients, admitted to the hospital with the diagnosis of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, were prospectively studied and followed until their death. Age ranged from 19 to 42 years (17 males). ECG and echocardiogram were also obtained every six months. After death, macro- and microscopic examinations were also performed., Results: The most frequent causes of referral to the hospital were: diarrhea or repeated pneumonias, tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis or Kaposi sarcoma. The most frequent findings were acute or chronic pericarditis (42%) and dilated cardiomyopathy (19%). Four patients died of cardiac problems: infective endocarditis, pericarditis with pericardial effusion, bacterial myocarditis and infection by Toxoplasma gondii., Conclusion: Severe cardiac abnormalities were the cause of death in some patients. In the majority of the patients, a good correlation existed between clinical and anatomical-pathological data. Cardiac evaluation was important to detect early manifestations and treat them accordingly, even in asymptomatic patients.

Mother-pup interaction, as well as other behavioral reactions were studied during the lactation period in 24 litters of Wistar rats and their dams fed either a 16% (control - C; 12 litters) or a 6% (malnourished - M; 12 litters) protein diet. The diets were isocaloric. Throughout lactation there was a 36.4% weight loss of M dams and a 63% body weight deficit in the M pups when compared to control pups. During this period, half of the litters were exposed daily to additional tactile stimulation (CS or MS), while the other half were submitted to normal rearing conditions (CN or MN). The tactile stimulation of pups (handling) consisted of holding the animal in one hand and gently touching the dorsal part of the animal's body with the fingers for 3 min. A special camera and a time-lapse video were used to record litter behavior in their home cages. Starting at 6 p.m. and ending at 6 a.m., on days 3, 6, 12, 15, 18 and 21 of lactation, photos were taken at 4-s intervals. An increase in the frequency (154.88 +/- 16.19) and duration (455.86 +/- 18.05 min) of suckling was observed throughout the lactation period in all groups compared to birth day (frequency 24.88 +/- 2.37 and duration 376.76 +/- 21.01 min), but the frequency was higher in the C (84.96 +/- 8.52) than in the M group (43.13 +/- 4.37); however, the M group (470.2 +/- 11.87 min) spent more time suckling as compared with the C group (393.67 +/- 13.09 min). The M dams showed a decreased frequency of resting position throughout the lactation period (6.5 +/- 2.48) compared to birth day (25.42 +/- 7.74). Pups from the C group were more frequently observed separated (73.02 +/- 4.38) and interacting (258.99 +/- 20.61) more with their mothers than the M pups (separated 66.94 +/- 5.5 and interacting 165.72 +/- 12.05). Tactile stimulation did not interact with diet condition, showing that the kind of stimulation used in the present study did not lead to recovery from the changes induced by protein malnutrition. The changes in mother-pup interaction produced by protein malnutrition of both may represent retardation in neuromotor development and a higher dependence of the pups on their mothers. These changes may represent an important means of energy saving and heat maintenance in malnourished pups.

Unlabelled: The interaction between the effects of different levels of protein malnutrition and environmental stimulation was investigated in young male rats in the elevated plus-maze (EPM). Litters (dam plus 6 male and 2 female pups) were fed a 16% (, Control: C), 10% (Malnourished: M10) or 6% (Malnourished: M6) protein diet. Half of the litters were daily exposed to additional stimulation (CS, MS10 or MS6), while the other half was maintained in normal rearing conditions (CN, MN10 or MN6). The stimulation (handling) consisted of holding the rat in one hand and gently touching the dorsal part of the body with the fingers for 3 min. On the 22nd day of life (weaning), two male pups from each group were tested in the plus-maze. Two male pups continued to receive the same diet as their mothers, and the other two were fed a non-purified lab chow diet until 35 days of age when they were tested in the plus-maze (LN, LS, LN10, LS10, LN6 and LS6 groups). Results showed that environmental stimulation increased open arms exploration both at 22 and 35 days of age, indicating an anxiolytic effect of this procedure. Younger rats (22 days of age) explored significantly more the open arms of the maze as compared with older rats (35 days of age), indicating an increase in anxiety with age. M6 animals showed significantly higher percentages of open arm entries and less frequent attempts to enter open arms in the maze as compared with C and M10 animals. These results suggest that even a short period of protein deficiency can produce alterations in the emotional response of rats in the elevated plus-maze. In addition, the data demonstrated that protein deficiency more severe than 10% is necessary to produce behavior alterations in the EPM test.

Purpose: To describe the cardiac findings in children with AIDS, the follow-up with treatment and the correlation between clinical and pathological features., Methods: We studied prospectively 25 children with clinical-laboratorial diagnosis of AIDS, ages between 3 months and 11 years, even those without cardiac symptoms. We classified the signs of AIDS following that of CDC-Atlanta 1994. Eight children died and it was done necropsy in six with macro and microscopic examinations., Results: Fifteen cases had already complications of AIDS and were classified as C2 and C3, 5 as B2, 3 B1 and 2 as A1. Beside the symptoms related to the disease and infections we found signs of congestive heart failure III and IV (NYHA) in 5 children, pericardial effusion in 5, (one of them had cardiac tamponade). In the electrocardiogram (EKG), 8 children had repolarization abnormalities. In 1st echocardiogram (ECHO) we found some features of dilated myocardiopathy in 8 (6 were asymptomatic) 5 of those had pericardial effusion, one child had huge amount of pericardial liquid and also increased measures of intraventricular septum and posterior wall of left ventricle by ECHO and confirmed by necropsy examination. All cases of diagnosis of myocardiopathy received treatment with captopril and 4 also received furosemide and digoxina. Even under oral treatment three of them had deterioration of heart failure but after combined anti-retroviral drugs they showed better cardiac functions. From the six necropsied cases, two had increased heart weight without myocarditis, one had toxoplasma pancarditis and other one had fibrocalcic vasculopathy., Conclusion: We found several assymptomatic cases already with decreased ventricular function. Some worsened of heart failure even under apropriate treatment and showed better cardiac index after combined anti-retroviral drugs.

Purpose: To analyze myocardial abnormalities in patients of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome with clinical and pathological correlation., Methods: We selected 50 cases, retrospectively, age ranged from 3 months to 40 years, all of them had myocardial changes and the data of clinical records fulfilled our protocol. Cases of others cardiac diseases were not included., Results: The pathological findings were: myocarditis in 33 (11 had severe myocarditis) and degenerative hystological lesions in 17. The etiologic agents detected were: Toxoplasma in 11, Cryptococcus in 7 and Cytomegalovirus in 3. In 12 cases we could not find any agent. In 15 cases occurred others lesions: endocarditis, pericarditis and sarcoma of Kaposi. It was noted tachycardia in 15 cases, decrease of heart sounds in 12, arterial hypotension in seven, systolic murmur in 8, galop rhythm in 7, pericardial friction rub in 3, arrhythmia in 2. Four patients had congestive heart failure. The EKG showed sinus tachycardia in 18, ST and T changes in 10, low voltage in 5, ST segment elevation in 5 and extrasystoles in 3 cases. The echocardiogram findings were: pericardial effusion in 9 cases and 9 had ventricular dysfunction., Conclusion: The cardiac lesions were very important even in patients without clinical signals. We need others prospective studies with viral identification trying to detect specific lesions of HIV.

A fatal case of a stressed newborn baby who developed tricuspid insufficiency due to an anterior papillary muscle infarction of the right ventricle, related to perinatal anoxia is reported. The baby needed resuscitation management and had a systolic murmur soon after birth. The echocardiographic examination showed a flail anterior leaflet of the tricuspid valve due to an avulsed anterior papillary muscle. There was rupture of chordae tendineae between anterior and posterior leaflet. Necrosis and calcium deposit were found in the area. The conclusion was that the anoxia in perinatal period, in most cases, causes transient lesions, but in few cases might be severe and fatal. It is important a complete cardiac evaluation in every case of prolonged perinatal stress.
