International audience; This study aimed at determining the relationship between fetal chromosomal disorders (CDs), including trisomy 21 (T21), and on first- and second-trimester maternal blood plasma, to identify the time-course metabolic adaptations to the conditions and the possible new plasma biomarkers. Furthermore, a definition of a joint circulatory (plasma) and excretory (urine) metabolic description of second-trimester CDs was sought.

21. Technical performance assessment of Inflow effects: experimental urban sewer system in Portugal

Abstract

In separate domestic sewer systems the excess of wastewater volumes in wastewater treatment plants can be due to infiltration into the sewer system from the groundwater, or due to storm water inflows coming from cross connections of storm drains, connected impervious areas and leaking manholes covers. In general, the effects of inflow/infiltration (I/I) are relatively obvious but usually there is no objective information on its quantification, origin and economic impact. The location and detection of cross connections in selected areas together with the technical performance assessment of the system can support the establishment of intervention priorities. If done extensively, without selection of the most affected areas, this procedure can be time consuming and expensive, especially for large sewer systems without clear benefits. However, if integrated in the planning of O&M interventions it can be a means of updating system information and correcting the malfunctions of the sewer system and improve its performance. In this paper a study on I/I in an experimental urban catchment of 4.5 ha, near Lisbon, in Portugal is presented. The main objectives of the work were to evaluate and quantify I/I effects on the system performance and to identify the number and location of cross connections as a first step to define a broader methodology.

22. Recombination nodules in coleopteran species: Palembus dermestoides (Tenebrionidae) and Epicauta atomaria (Meloidae)

Abstract

This work describes the first report about the occurrence of recombination nodules (RNs) in spread pachytene cells of two species of Coleoptera: Palembus dermestoides (Tenebrionidae) and Epicauta atomaria (Meloidae). The RNs were observed in preparations contrasted with phosphotungstic acid. Considering RN morphology and its occurrence in pachytene bivalents (one per autosome bivalent) these structures were interpreted to be late RNs. P. dermestoides and E. atomaria have 2n = 20 chromosomes including an Xyp sex determination system. In spite of most frequently subtelocentric morphology observed in the autosomes of both species, the occurrence of RNs is limited only to the synaptonemal complex (SC) structure of the long arms. These findings are in agreement with those obtained using light microscopy analysis in which only one chiasma or terminalization event is observed per autosomal bivalent in early or late metaphase I cells. The RNs have the same average width of the SC of each analyzed species, a circular shape, strong electron density, and are observed mainly between the lateral elements of the SC. The RNs of P. dermestoides and E. atomaria have approximately the same average size (width), 180 ± 20 nm and 160 ± 80 nm, respectively. The absence of RNs in the short arms and its occurrence in the long arms are discussed considering the short arm pericentromeric and pro-centric heterochromatin.

Abstract

Wastewater services are fundamental for the protection of public health and environment, population well-being and sustainable development of communities. The value of urban water assets represents a major part of all public infrastructures. These assets must be managed rationally and efficiently, justifying investment priorities in a clear and straightforward way. Effective decision-making requires a comprehensive approach allowing the incorporation of desired performance at acceptable risk levels, considering investment and operational costs. Advanced sewer infrastructure asset management (IAM) is key to achieve and ensure adequate future levels of service, in issues such as flooding of urban areas, pollution prevention, balancing performance, risk and cost. The paper illustrates the integration of different support tools and methods by implementation of the AWARE-P procedure for planning IAM, demonstrated by the experience of fourteen wastewater utilities. Results showed the effectiveness of the tools and methods at different stages of the AWARE-P methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
