Structures resembling semiclathrates probably arise in liquid aqueous solutions of piperidine at the amine mole fraction below 0.03. With the increasing concentration, the structures gradually decay, but the 1:1 complexes of piperidine with water remain linked one to another through the O-H...O bonds between the hydration water molecules. A periodic order of the bicontinuous microemulsion type occurs in the range of the mole fractions from 0.08 to 0.5. In the piperidine-rich mixtures, the 1:1 complexes are dispersed uniformly in the amine. Relatively low stabilization energy of these complexes probably causes that piperidine is totally miscible with water.

New mixed cationic liposomes based on L-{\alpha}-phosphatidylcholine and dihexadecylmethylhydroxyethylammonium bromide (DHDHAB) were designed to overcome the BBB crossing by using the intranasal route. Synthesis and self-assembly of DHDHAB were performed. A low critical association concentration (0.01 mM), good solubilization properties toward hydrophobic dye Orange OT and antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (MIC=7.8 {\mu}g.mL-1) and Bacillus cereus (MIC=7.8 {\mu}g.mL-1), low hemolytic activities against human red blood cells (less than 10%) were achieved. Conditions for preparation of cationic vesicle and mixed liposomes with excellent colloidal stability at room temperature were determined. The intranasal administration of rhodamine B-loaded cationic liposomes was shown to increase bioavailability into the brain in comparison to the intravenous injection. The cholinesterase reactivator, 2-PAM, was used as model drug for the loading in cationic liposomes. 2-PAM-loaded cationic liposomes displayed high encapsulation efficiency (~ 90 %) and hydrodynamic diameter close to 100 nm. Intranasally administered 2-PAM-loaded cationic liposomes were effective against paraoxon-induced acetylcholinesterase inhibition in the brain. 2-PAM-loaded liposomes reactivated 12 +/- 1% of brain acetylcholinesterase. This promising result opens the possibility to use marketed positively charged oximes in medical countermeasures against organophosphorus poisoning for reactivation of central acetylcholinesterase by implementing a non-invasive approach, via the "nose-brain" pathway.

The interactions among neutral polymer polyacrylamide (PAM) and the biosurfactant Surfactin and four betaines, N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (SDDAB), N-tetradecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (STDAB), N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (SHDAB), and N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-2-ammonio-acetate (C12BE), in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) have been studied by surface tension measurements, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and rheological experiments. It has been confirmed that the length of alkyl chain is a key parameter of interaction between betaines and PAM. Differences in scattering contrast between X-ray and neutrons for surfactants and PAM molecules provide the opportunity to separately follow the changes of structure of PAM and surfactant aggregates. At concentrations of betaines higher than CMC (critical micelle concentration) and C2 (CMC of surfactant with the presence of polymer), spherical micelles are formed in betaines and betaines/PAM solutions. Transition from spherical to rod-like aggregates (micelles) has been observed in solutions of Surfactin and Surfactin/SDDAB ({\alpha}Surfactin = 0.67 (molar fraction)) with addition of 0.8 wt % of PAM. The conformation change of PAM molecules only can be observed for Surfactin/SDDAB/PAM system. Viscosity values follow the structural changes suggested from scattering measurements i.e., gradually increases for mixtures PAM -> Surfactin/PAM -> Surfactin/SDDAB/PAM in PBS.

Superparamagnetic {\gamma}-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (5 nm diameter) were synthesized in water. The bare particles exhibit good colloidal stability at ~ pH 2 because of the strong electrostatic repulsion with a surface charge of +25 mV. The polyacrylic acid (PAA)-coated particles exhibit remarkable colloidal stability at ~ pH 7 with abundant free carboxyl groups as reactive sites for subsequent functionalization. In this work, we used zeta potential analysis, transmission electron microscopy, small angle X-ray scattering, and Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to investigate the adsorption behavior of U (VI) on bare and coated colloidal superparamagnetic nanoparticles at pH 2 and pH 7. At pH 2, uranyl ion (UO22+) absorbed on the surface of the bare particles with decreasing particle surface charge. This induced particle agglomeration. At pH 7, uranyl ion (UO22+) hydrolyzed and formed plate-like particles of uranium hydroxide that were ~ 50 nm in diameter. The PAA-coated iron oxide nanoparticles absorbed on the surface of these U (VI) hydroxide plates to form large aggregates that precipitate to the bottom of the dispersion. At both pH 2 and pH 7, the resulting U (VI)/nanoparticle complex can be easily collected and extracted from the aqueous environment via an external magnetic field. The results show that both bare and polymer-coated superparamagnetic {\gamma}-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are potential absorbents for removing U (VI) from water.

Mesoporous silica particles have been synthesized by sol-gel method from tetraethoxysilane (tetraethylorthosilicate, TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), in ethanol and water mixture, at different ratios of the of the silica precursors. Ammonia was used as catalyst at room temperature and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) as the structure directing agent. Nitrogen sorption, X-ray diffraction and small-angle neutron scattering gave information on the evolution of the gel structure and pore morphologies in the function of MTES/TEOS molar ratio. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis showed that with addition of MTES the exothermic peak indicating the oxidation of the low molecular weight organic fragments shift to higher temperature. A room-temperature, one-pot synthesis of MCM-41 type materials is presented, in which the variation of the MTES concentration allows to change the hydrophobicity, preserving the specific properties materials, like the ordered pore structure, large specific surface area and high porosity, making them suitable for selective uptake of guest species in drug loading applications. Specifically, the obtained materials had cylindrical pores, specific surface areas up to 1101 m2/g and total pore volumes up to 0.473 cm3/g. The obtained mesoporous materials are susceptible for further functionalization to improve their selective uptake of guest species in drug delivery applications.

Simulation (molecular dynamics and Car-Parrinello [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 2471 (1985)]) and diffraction (x-ray and neutron) studies on nitromethane are compared aiming at the determination of the liquid structure. Beyond that, the capabilities of the methods to describe liquid structure are discussed. For the studied liquid, the diffraction methods are performing very well in the determination of intramolecular structure, but they do not give detailed structural information on the intermolecular structure. The good agreement between the diffraction experiments and the results of molecular dynamics simulations justifies the use of simulations for the more detailed description of the liquid structure using partial radial distribution functions and orientational correlation functions. Liquid nitromethane is described as a molecular liquid without strong intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding, but with detectable orientational correlations resulting in preferential antiparallel order of the neighboring molecules.

Mesoporous silica particles of MCM-41 type were synthesized by sol-gel method from tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in 2-methoxyethanol and deionized water mixture in base conditions at room temperature. Ammonia or sodium hydroxides were used as catalysts and cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and n-dodecyl-trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) as structure directing agents. The porosities and the ordered structure have been analyzed using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, small angle neutron and X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, thermal analysis and FTIR spectroscopy. The samples consist of spherical particles of sub-micrometer size, with radially arranged pores. The comparison of the effect of the different surfactants and catalysts shows that by varying the surfactant type and their proportion, the pore sizes can be controlled. As compared to the commonly used ammonia catalyst, the use of NaOH as catalyst results in a much smaller porosity of the as-prepared materials. These materials are not resisting to the heat treatment at 700 C used for the template removal, and the ordered porous structure is completely lost.

The physicochemical characterization of the magnetoferritin biomacromolecule in terms of morphology, structural and magnetic properties shows that iron oxides can be efficiently loaded into apoferritin molecules, preserving their native biocompatible structure and affecting the morphology of the protein shell.

Mesoporous silica matrices have been prepared via classic acid catalyzed and sono-catalyzed sol-gel routes. Tetramethoxysilan (TMOS) and methyl-trimethoxysilane (MTMS) were used as silica precursors, and N-butyl-3-methylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate ([bmPy][BF4]) was employed as co-solvent and pore template. The ionic liquid (IL) to silica mole ratio was varied between 0.007 and 0.07. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption and small-angle neutron scattering measurements were used to characterize the obtained materials. The ionic liquid played the role of catalyst that affected the formation of the primary xerogel particles, and changed the porosity of the materials. Ultrasound treatment resulted in microstructure change on the level of the colloid particle aggregates. In comparison with IL containing xerogels, the IL containing sonogels show increased pore diameter, bigger pore volumes and diminished surface areas.

Magnetoferritin, a synthetic derivate of iron storage protein - ferritin, has been synthesized with different iron oxide loading values. Small-angle neutron scattering experiments were applied to study the structure of magnetoferritin solutions using contrast variation method by varying the light to heavy water ratio of the solvent. Higher iron loading leads to increasing of the neutron scattering length density of magnetoferritin and also to the increase of the polydispersity of complexes. The formation of the magnetic core and the variation of the protein shell structure upon iron loading are concluded.
