PURPOSE To evaluate the micro-shear bond strength (μSBS) of different bonding protocols to commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) using two universal adhesives and Alloy Primer. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 120 cubes of CP Ti were airborne-particle abraded and then divided into 6 groups (n = 20 each) according to bonding protocol: (1) Scotchbond Universal (SU; 3M ESPE), (2) Alloy Primer (AP; Kuraray) + SU; (3) G-Premio Bond (GP; GC); or (4) AP + GP. The specimens from groups 1 to 4 were cemented with RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE), while those from groups 5 and 6 were cemented using Panavia F2.0 cement (PAN; Kuraray) without and with prior AP application, respectively. After 24 hours, half the specimens were subjected to μSBS measurement and the other half to thermocycling (5,000 cycles) before testing. Data were analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk, two-way analysis of variance, Games-Howell, and independent sample t test (α = .05). RESULTS The μSBS values obtained from the AP + SU group were significantly higher than from the GP (P = .003) and the AP + GP (P = .022) groups. After thermocycling, the μSBS of both groups treated with SU were significantly higher than those other groups (P < .001). The application of AP could not improve adhesion of resin cements to CP Ti. Thermocycling significantly reduced the μSBS values of the PAN group, whereas it noticeably enhanced the adhesion of SU and AP + SU. The predominant failure mode in all groups was adhesive. CONCLUSION The application of AP, followed by SU, produced the most effective bonding to CP Ti, which was able to endure limited thermal aging.

Aim:To evaluate the effect of surface treatments of implant abutment and metal framework on the retention of implant-supported cement-retained bridge with short abutments. Methodology:Straight implant abutments of sizes (4.3 mm × 4 mm) and analogues were selected and mounted on the acrylic block. Four such assemblies were made. 40 number of 3-unit metal framework were casted and divided into four groups. Group 1- (control group) No modification. Group 2- The abutments were subjected to surface modifications by bur, cementing surface of the framework was sandblasted. Group 3- The abutments were subjected to surface modifications by bur and framework was sandblasted and also subjected to alloy primer (M.L. Primer Shofu Inc.) Group 4- Both the abutment and framework are subjected to sandblasting and alloy primer. The framework was cemented with a Resin cement (Panavia F). Retention tests were conducted with a universal testing machine (5 mm/min), and tensile bond strengths were recorded. Statistics:Data were subjected to one-way analysis of variance, Post Hoc Tukey’s significant difference test, (α = 0.05). Results:The mean retentive force for Group 1 was 200.70 +- 22.930 N, for Group 2 was 460.70 +- 96.40 N, for Group 3 was 749.80 +- 134.474 N and for Group 4 was 658.00 +- 20.025 N. Group 3 showed highest mean peak force required for dislodging the metal framework from the abutments after cementation than all the other groups at 749.80 N. Conclusion:Modification of the implant abutment by bur and sandblasting while modification of 3-unit metal framework by sandblasting and alloy primer showed the highest retention and demonstrated the significant difference in the tensile bond strength than all other groups. &nbsp

Background: The type of housing retaining material may affect the bond strength of the housing to denture base resin. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the bond strength of locator housing attached to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture base resin secured with different retaining materials. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study Forty-four PMMA blocks (10 mm × 15 mm × 15 mm) were prepared with a central cylindrical canal inside to allow the insertion of locator housings. The prepared specimens were then randomly divided into four groups (n = 11). Each group received one of the following retaining materials for housing insertion: Auto-polymerized acrylic resin (APAR), auto-polymerized composite resin (Quick up), application of alloy primer on titanium housing plus Quick up (AL-Quick), and heat-polymerized acrylic resin (HPAR). The specimens were thermocycled 5000 times between 5°C and 55°C, followed by 1000 cycles of vertical insertion separation on the locator abutment. A push-out force was applied on the flat back surface of the housing after which the failure and shear bond strength values were calculated. The data were analyzed using one way-ANOVA and Games-Howell test (α = 0.05). Results: HPAR group had significantly higher shear bond strength values compared to the other groups (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found among the other remaining material groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Inserting of locator housing using HPAR resulted in higher bond strength between housing and denture base resin. The application of alloy primer did not improve the bond strength of locator housing which was retained with “Quick up”.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the adhesive performance of three different universal adhesives to repair aged amalgam by composite resins with or without Alloy Primer. Materials and Methods: Sixty amalgam samples were prepared, aged, and randomly divided into 12 main groups according to adhesive procedures used. Composite buildups were placed on amalgam surfaces. After micro-shear bonding test, the fracture surfaces were examined under the scanning electron microscopy statistical analysis was performed using two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc tests. Results: Without use of Alloy Primer, all of the universal adhesives provided similar bond strength values with conventional adhesives (P > 0.05); however, an Alloy Primer significantly increased the bond strength values of universal adhesives (P < 0.05). No significant difference in bond strength values was noted for conventional adhesives with or without Alloy Primer (P > 0.05) except for Clearfil SE Bond (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded; using Alloy Primer before universal adhesives increased the bond strength significantly.

Purpose To evaluate the shear bond strengths of two gingiva-colored materials (an indirect composite material and a denture base acrylic resin) to zirconia ceramics and determine the effects of surface treatment with various priming agents. Methods A gingiva-colored indirect composite material (CER) or denture base acrylic resin (PAL) was bonded to zirconia disks with unpriming (UP) or one of seven priming agents ( n =11 each), namely, Alloy Primer (ALP), Clearfil Photo Bond (CPB), Clearfil Photo Bond with Clearfil Porcelain Bond Activator (CPB+Act), Metal Link (MEL), Meta Fast Bonding Liner (MFB), MR. bond (MRB), and V-Primer (VPR). Shear bond strength was determined before and after 5000 thermocycles. The data were analyzed with the Kruskal–Wallis test and Steel-Dwass test. Results The mean pre-/post-thermalcycling bond strengths were 1.0–14.1MPa/0.1–12.1MPa for the CER specimen and 0.9–30.2MPa/0.1–11.1MPa for the PAL specimen. For the CER specimen, the ALP, CPB, and CPB+Act groups had significantly higher bond strengths among the eight groups, at both 0 and 5000 thermocycles. For the PAL specimen, shear bond strength was significantly lower after thermalcycling in all groups tested. After 5000 thermocycles, bond strengths were significantly higher in the CPB and CPB+Act groups than in the other groups. Conclusions For the PAL specimens, bond strengths were significantly lower after thermalcycling in all groups tested. The MDP functional monomer improved bonding of a gingiva-colored indirect composite material and denture base acrylic resin to zirconia ceramics.

Objective To evaluate the abilities of the DCB and the NTP test for measuring adherence of an adhesive joint between a resin and a metal interface. Methods Two-hundred stainless steel metal beams (diam. 50×5×2 mm) were cast and treated by the following methods: (1) sandblasting with aluminum oxide, followed by treatment with (2) the Rocatec system or (3) the Alloy primer. Superbond and Panavia F 2.0 were used as adhesives. The fracture energy (G1C) and fracture toughness (K1C) of two adhesives were compared by two-way analysis of variance. Results With the DCB test, Superbond was more effective than Panavia, regardless of the surface treatment and conditions of crack propagation. The overall effectiveness of the treatments was in the following order: sandblasting + Rocatec > sandblasting alone > sandblasting + Alloy primer. The adherence energy in an aqueous medium was lower than that in air. With the NTP test, similar performances were obtained with three surface treatments. However, the potential of Rocatec seemed slightly higher. Conclusions The DCB and NTP tests provide independent measures of the inherent value of an adhesive. Rocatec appeared to provide greater resistance of the bonded joints in an aqueous environment.

Introduction: In modern dentistry, as the patient’s demand for aesthetic dentistry increases, the use of tooth-coloured restorative material increase correspondingly. One among them is the use of Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) restorations. However, fracture of PFM crown is a common problem in restorative dentistry. Various methods have been advocated to repair fractured porcelain. Aim: The aim of present study was to evaluate the efficiency of the two different bonding systems in reference to three different surface treatments on Nickel Chromium (Ni-Cr) alloys by evaluating the shear bond strength at metal and resin interface. Materials and Methods: A total of 80 Ni-Cr alloys measuring 1x1 cm square blocks were cast using lost wax technique. After casting, the specimens were grouped into four groups based on the surface treatments planned. The four groups were further subdivided into two subgroups based on the bonding technique. The subgroup A samples was treated with Single Bond Universal (SBU) and subgroup B samples was treated with Alloy Primer (AP) and SBU. After surface treatment of the sample, a clear plastic tube measuring 4 mm diameter and 4 mm length was placed and composite resin was packed and cured. Shear bond testing of all the groups was performed on Universal testing machine. Results: The means and standard deviations of Shear Bond Strength (SBS) values in MPa were calculated for each group, and the results were statistically analysed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests. All statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software version 10.0. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, Erbiumdoped Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (Er-YAG) Laser treated alloy surfaces bonded along with AP displayed highest shear bond strength and subgroup B samples bond strength was significantly higher.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of three metal priming agents on the bond strength of adhesive resin cement to Silver-Zinc-Tin-Indium (Ag-Zn-Sn-In) alloy and pure Ag, Zn, Sn, and In. The specimens were air-abraded with alumina and then primed with one of three metal priming agents: V-Primer, Estenia Opaque Primer, or Alloy Primer. The metal disks were bonded with adhesive resin cement (Super-Bond Bulk-mix technique). Shear bond strengths (n=10/group) were determined before and after 50,000 thermocycles for Ag-Zn-Sn-In alloy as well as after 5,000 thermocycles for pure Ag, Zn, Sn and In. For Ag-Zn-Sn-In alloy, the post-thermocycling bond strength of the Alloy Primer group was significantly higher than that of the other primers. It can be concluded that Alloy Primer containing both the vinyl-thione monomer (VBATDT) and hydrophobic phosphate monomer (MDP) is effective for bonding Ag-Zn-Sn-In alloy and pure Ag, Zn and Sn.

Purpose The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of priming agents and artificial aging with thermocycling on shear bond strengths of two resin-based luting agents to a translucent zirconia material. Methods A total of 308 pairs of translucent zirconia disk specimens were divided into seven treatment groups: Alloy Primer (ALP), Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus (CCP), Meta Fast Bonding Liner (MFB), MR. bond (MRB), Super-Bond PZ Primer Liquid B (PZB), V-Primer (VPR), and an unprimed group (UP). The specimens in each group were bonded with Panavia V5 Universal (UNI) and Opaque shade (OPA). Shear bond strengths (n = 11 each) were tested before and after 5000 thermocycles. The data were analyzed with the Kruskal–Wallis test and the Steel–Dwass test. Results For both 0 and 5000 thermocycles, the ALP (47.8 and 41.5 MPa, respectively) and CCP (45.8 and 42.3 MPa, respectively) groups showed significantly higher bond strengths than other groups in the UNI luting agent. For the OPA luting agent, CCP group (45.8 MPa) exhibited the highest pre-thermocycling bond strength in all groups. The ALP (32.4 MPa) and CCP (36.5 MPa) groups had significantly higher post-thermocycling shear bond strengths than other groups. In several groups, the shear bond strengths of the UNI luting agent were significantly higher than those of the OPA luting agent before and after thermocycling. Conclusions Application of priming agents containing hydrophobic phosphate monomer (MDP) yielded the durable bond strengths of resin-based luting agents to a translucent zirconia material.

Material and Methods: Twenty-four blocks of nickel-chromium with dimensions of 5x5x5 mm were cast and divided into four groups of six blocks. Each group was conditioned with the following surface treatments: G1- sandblasting with Al 2 O 3 (50 µm) + Alloy Primer (Kuraray); G2-sandblasting with Al 2 O 3 (50 µm) + 37% phosphoric acid + Adper Single Bond 2 (3M); G3- Cojet-Sand System (3M); G4- Cojet-Sand System (3M) + Adper Single Bond 2 (3M). On the conditioned face of the metal blocks was applied composite resin until obtaining a symmetrical resin block . These sets were split up, obtained 96 samples of 10x1x1 mm, with adhesive surface of 1 mm². After thermocycling (500 cycles at 5-55 °C) all samples were submitted to the microtensile test in an universal test machine (EMIC) with crosshead speed of 1mm/min. Results: Means and standard deviation of bond strength (MPa) were: G1: 24.49 ± 4.80, G2: 19.51 ± 3.90, G3: 38.93 ± 3.37 and G4: 36.49 ± 3.45. The data were analyzed by the analysis of variance test (ANOVA) indicating that values of bond strength of the group G3 and G4 were significantly larger than the groups G1 and G2. Conclusion: It was concluded that the NiCr alloy conditioned with Cojet-Sand (G3 and G4) increased the values of bond strength to composite resin compared to the surface treatments of groups G1 and G2.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of acidic primers on adhesive bonding to sintered alumina. Alumina disk specimens were primed with one of the following acidic materials: Acryl Bond, All Bond II Primer B, Alloy Primer, Estenia Opaque Primer, Eye Sight Opaque Primer, M.L. Primer, MR. Bond, and Super-Bond Liquid. The disks were bonded with an adhesive resin (Super-Bond) initiated with a tri-n-butylborane (TBB) derivative, and bond strengths were determined. Average bond strength before thermocycling varied from 42.9 to 44.3 MPa, whereas post-thermocycling bond strength ranged from 22.0 to 42.8 MPa. Of the nine groups assessed, reduction of bond strength after thermocycling was not significant in three: Alloy Primer, Estenia Opaque Primer, and Eye Sight Opaque Primer. It can be concluded that phosphate-based primers are recommended for bonding sintered alumina with Super- Bond resin. (J Oral Sci 52, 571-576, 2010)

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of acidic primers on adhesive bonding to sintered aluminum oxide (alumina). Alumina disks were primed with one of the following materials: Acryl Bond, All Bond 2 Primer B, Alloy Primer, Estenia Opaque Primer, Eye Sight Opaque Primer, M.L. Primer, MR. Bond, and Super-Bond Liquid. Specimens were then bonded with an acrylic resin initiated with partially oxidized tri-n-butylborane (TBBO), and bond strengths were determined. Unprimed specimen was employed as the control. Average bond strength before thermocycling ranged from 20.5 to 41.9 MPa, whereas post-thermocycling bond strength ranged from 0.0 to 40.0 MPa. Of the eight primers, Estenia Opaque Primer and Alloy Primer showed better adhesive performance than the other materials. This study aimed to evaluate the bonding behavior of two acrylic resin adhesives joined to titanium-aluminum-niobium (Ti-6Al-7Nb) alloy primed with two metal conditioners. Cast Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy disks were air-abraded with alumina and bonded with six combinations of two resin adhesives (Super-Bond C&B and Multi Bond) and three surface conditions (Alloy Primer, M.L. Primer, and unprimed control). Shear bond strengths were determined both before and after 20,000 thermal cycles. The tri-n-butylborane initiated Super-Bond C and B resin exhibited greater bond strength than the BPO-amine initiated Multi-Bond resin. Both the Alloy Primer with a hydrophobic phosphate and the M.L. Primer with a phosphonoacetate effectively improved the 24-hour bond strength of Multi-Bond resin as well as the post-thermocycling bond strength of Super-Bond C and B resin.

PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of surface treatments on retention of implant-supported restorations over short abutments. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred twenty metal copings were made on Straumann solid abutments (3 mm length). The copings were divided into 2 groups: control and air abraded (50 μm Al2O3). The copings were luted using Fleck's, Poly F, Panavia F, and Fuji Plus. In resin cements groups, 2 subgroups were studied base on the application of Alloy Primer (n = 10). After conditioning in saliva and 5000 thermal cycles, retentive strengths of specimens were measured. Data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA and Tukey honestly significant difference tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS Panavia F 2.0 combined with Alloy Primer showed the most retentive values. In control and air abraded groups, there was no significant difference between the studied luting agents. Alloy Primer significantly increased the retention of copings luted with Panavia F 2.0. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, the retentive strength of metal copings over short implant abutments was not improved by airborne-particle abrasion. However, Alloy primer enhanced the retention of metal copings that were luted using Panavia F 2.0.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different surface treatments on the tensile bond strength of single crowns on Implant Direct abutments cemented with resin cement. Materials and methods: In total, 28 Screw Plant implants and abutments were divided into four study groups: I, control; II, sandblasted abutment and crown; III, non-sandblasted abutment and alloy primer applied to a sandblasted crown; and IV, alloy primer applied to a sandblasted abutment and crown. Twenty-eight crowns were cemented to abutments of implants, and a umaxial tensile force was applied to the crowns using a universal test machine until cement failure occurred. Retention values were statistically analyzed. Results: All mean retention values significantly differed among groups. While the alloy primer applied to the sandblasted castings and abutments showed the highest mean value (564.73 +/- 13.66 N), the control group showed the lowest mean value (357.65 +/- 12.89N). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of functional monomers contained in the primers, as well as alumina particle abrasion on bonding between stainless steel and acrylic resin. SUS XM27 steel was primed with one of the following materials; Alloy Primer, Estenia Opaque Primer, M. L. Primer, and Super-Bond Liquid. Steel disks were either ground flat or alumina-blasted, primed with one of the four agents, and bonded with an acrylic resin (Unifast Trad). Bond strength was determined both before and after thermocycling (2,000 or 20,000 cycles). Among the four priming agents, the Alloy Primer and Estenia Opaque Primer, both of which contain 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP), exhibited better bonding performance than the others. Alumina air-borne particle abrasion considerably improved the durability of bonding between the steel and the resin material. It can be concluded that alumina blasting followed by priming with an MDP agent is recommended for bonding the resin and SUS XM27 steel.

Aims: To determine the in vitro shear bond strengths (SBS) of zirconia ceramic to resin composite after various primer treatments. Materials and Methods: Forty zirconia ceramic (Zeno, Wieland Dental) specimens (10 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick) were prepared, sandblasted with 50 μm alumina, and divided into four groups (n = 10). Three experimental groups were surface treated with three primers; CP (RelyX Ceramic Primer, 3M ESPE), AP (Alloy Primer, Kuraray Medical), and MP (Monobond Plus, Ivoclar Vivadent AG). One group was not treated and served as the control. All specimens were bonded to a resin composite (Filtek Supreme XT, 3M ESPE) cylinder with an adhesive system (Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus Adhesive, 3M ESPE) and then stored in 100% humidity at 37°C for 24 h before SBS testing in a universal testing machine. Mean SBS (MPa) were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test (α = 0.05). Results: Group AP yielded the highest mean and standard deviation (SD) value of SBS (16.8 ± 2.5 MPa) and Group C presented the lowest mean and SD value (15.4 ± 1.6 MPa). The SBS did not differ significantly among the groups (P = 0.079). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, the SBS values between zirconia ceramic to resin composite using various primers and untreated surface were not significantly different.
