1. Ab Initio Liquid Hydrogen Muon Cooling Simulations with ELMS in ICOOL

Abstract

This paper presents new theoretical results on the passage of muons through liquid hydrogen which have been confirmed in a recent experiment. These are used to demonstrate that muon bunches may be compressed by ionisation cooling more effectively than suggested by previous calculations. Muon cooling depends on the differential cross section for energy loss and scattering of muons. We have calculated this cross section for liquid H2 from first principles and atomic data, avoiding traditional assumptions. Thence, 2-D probability maps of energy loss and scattering in mm-scale thicknesses are derived by folding, and stored in a database. Large first-order correlations between energy loss and scattering are found for H2, which are absent in other simulations. This code is named ELMS, Energy Loss & Multiple Scattering. Single particle trajectories may then be tracked by Monte Carlo sampling from this database on a scale of 1 mm or less. This processor has been inserted into the cooling code ICOOL. Significant improvements in 6-D muon cooling are predicted compared with previous predictions based on GEANT. This is examined in various geometries. The large correlation effect is found to have only a small effect on cooling. The experimental scattering observed for liquid H2 in the MUSCAT experiment has recently been reported to be in good agreement with the ELMS prediction, but in poor agreement with GEANT simulation., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

2. Neutrino Oscillation Effects in Soudan-2 Upward-stopping muons

Abstract

Upward-going stopping muons initiated by atmospheric \numu and \anumu interactions in the rock below the Soudan 2 detector have been isolated, together with a companion sample of neutrino-induced single muons, created within the detector, which travel downwards and exit. The downward-going sample is consistent with the atmospheric-neutrino flux prediction, but the upward-going sample exhibits a sizeable depletion. Both are consistent with previously reported Soudan-2 neutrino-oscillation results. Inclusion of the two samples in an all-event likelihood analysis, using recent 3D-atmospheric-neutrino-flux calculations, reduces both the allowed oscillation parameter region and the probability of the no-oscillation hypothesis., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

We report a measurement of the atmospheric neutrino flavor ratio, R, using a sample of quasi-elastic neutrino interactions occurring in an iron medium. The flavor ratio (tracks/showers) of atmospheric neutrinos in a 3.9 fiducial kiloton-year exposure of Soudan 2 is 0.64 +- 0.11 (stat.) +- 0.06 (syst.) of that expected. Important aspects of our main analysis have been checked by carrying out two independent, alternative analyses; one is based upon automated scanning, the other uses a multivariate approach for background subtraction. Abstract

The atmospheric neutrino flavour ratio measured using a 1.52 kton-year exposure of Soudan 2 is found to be 0.72 +- 0.19 +0.05 -0.07 relative to the expected value from a Monte Carlo calculation. The possible background of interactions of neutrons and photons produced in muon interactions in the rock surrounding the detector has been investigated and is shown not to produce low values of the ratio., Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 3 ps files, and 2 style files. 6. Experimental investigations in elementary particle physics

Abstract

An account is given of some of the results of an experiment undertaken by a collaboration of five British and one German Hydrogen Bubble Chamber Groups. A beam of 6 GeV/c K− mesons was injected into the British National Hydrogen Bubble Chamber at the proton synchrotron at CKPN, Geneva. A total of 300,000 pictures or 1800 kms, of K− track was scanned for interactions. The scanning measuring and identification of two classes of interaction in the Oxford sample of film are described in detail. A scheme which uses a computer to do the book keeping of the scanned information is mentioned - this was developed by the author as a result of experience with this experiment. The treatment of losses, biases and ambiguities is discussed at some length - a new method is used to correct for the lose of sigmas at small decay angles in the laboratory and a discussion of the meaning of the probability associated with a kinematic fit leads to ideas affecting the interpretation of ambiguous fits. Special problems affecting the analysis of antibody final states are discussed and solutions put into practice. Careful treatment is given to final states which derive large weights from losses. A discussion of the optimum way of selecting resonances and choosing histogram bin sizes is to be found in an appendix. From a brief discussion of the theory of Unitary Symmetry we are lead to consider the omega minus and its quantum numbers. An original investigation by the author into the isospin of the omega takes the form of a search for s neutral baryon of strangeness −3. The fact that the state is not found is of even greater interest for the quark model of Unitary Symmetry. The latter is described briefly and a search is made for other states forbidden by the model. A survey is made of final states containing a hyperon and mesons. Evidence in favour of a new Y•1 resonance at 1680 MeV decaying to (λπ) supports the findings of W. Derrick et al. at 5.5 GeV/c. A strong forward peak of lambdas in the lambda four pion and lambda five pion final states appears to be associated with strong production of positively charged meson resonances decaying into three pions. These resonances appear at 1100, 1500 and 164O MeV and are identified with A1, A2 and π(1640). The A2 appears to decay to (ρπ) although the data suggests that the A1 does not. Similar features were seen in the lambda four pion state at 3.5 OeV. These findings are important since the A1 has only been seen before in final states confused by "Deck" diffractive effects. The decay correlations of the reaction K−p → ρ° are calculated from first principles and compared with experiment. This paves the way for the study of the double peripheral production mechanism. Detailed discussion of two final states (K−p → ∑°π+π− and K−p → K*−π+n) is used to set forth the general features of the model. It is shown that the matrix element for the former may be derived directly from that for the well known reaction π−p → ∑°K*° by crossing symmetry. Although the data are not definitive, they provide general for the model.

Abstract

This Letter reports results from the MINOS experiment based on its initial exposure to neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam. The rates and energy spectra of charged current nu(mu) interactions are compared in two detectors located along the beam axis at distances of 1 and 735 km. With 1.27x10(20) 120 GeV protons incident on the NuMI target, 215 events with energies below 30 GeV are observed at the Far Detector, compared to an expectation of 336 +/- 14 events. The data are consistent with nu(mu) disappearance via oscillations with vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar=2.74(-0.26)(+0.44)x10(-3) eV(2) and sin(2)(2 theta(23))> 0.87 (68% C.L.).

Abstract

Upward-going stopping muons initiated by atmospheric \numu and \anumu interactions in the rock below the Soudan 2 detector have been isolated, together with a companion sample of neutrino-induced single muons, created within the detector, which travel downwards and exit. The downward-going sample is consistent with the atmospheric-neutrino flux prediction, but the upward-going sample exhibits a sizeable depletion. Both are consistent with previously reported Soudan-2 neutrino-oscillation results. Inclusion of the two samples in an all-event likelihood analysis, using recent 3D-atmospheric-neutrino-flux calculations, reduces both the allowed oscillation parameter region and the probability of the no-oscillation hypothesis., 23 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

(G. J. Feldman is the Harvard author) The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment uses an accelerator-produced neutrino beam to perform precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters in the "atmospheric neutrino" sector associated with muon neutrino disappearance. This long-baseline experiment measures neutrino interactions in Fermilab's NuMI neutrino beam with a near detector at Fermilab and again 735 km downstream with a far detector in the Soudan Underground Laboratory in northern Minnesota. The two detectors are magnetized steel-scintillator tracking calorimeters. They are designed to be as similar as possible in order to ensure that differences in detector response have minimal impact on the comparisons of event rates, energy spectra and topologies that are essential to MINOS measurements of oscillation parameters. Abstract

A study of the properties of charm particles produced in 360 GeV/c p-p interactions is reported. The experiment was performed using the high resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC in association with the European Hybrid Spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Details of the exposure and operation of the spectrometer are given and the methods used to extract the charm data are presented. The essential physics results on the decay properties (lifetime, branching ratios) as well as on the hadroproduction properties (cross sections forD, ",F, ?c,D, correlations between charm particles) are given.

Abstract

We present the results of a search for charm F mesons in 360 GeV/ c π − p interactions. Several methods have been used; all yield no evidence for the F and are interpreted as 90% confidence level cross section upper limits.

Abstract

In an experiment with a 360 GeV/c $\pi^{-}$ beam at the CERN SPS using the high resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC and the European Hybrid Spectrometer, an event has been observed of the type $\pi^{-}p$ to $D^{0}D^{0}+8$ prongs. The fully reconstructed decay modes are $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ and $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{-}$, with all six charged tracks being detected in the spectrometer and all four photons from the $\pi^{0}$ decays detected in the lead glass gamma detection system. The $D^{0}$ has momentum $119.0 \pm 0.6$ GeV/c, $x_{F}=0.31$, length $4.1 \pm 0.1$ mm and proper lifetime $(2.1 \pm 0.1)\times10^{-13}$s. The $D^{0}$ has momentum $78.5 \pm 0.3$ GeV/c, $x_{F}=0.19$, length $7.5 \pm 0.1$ mm and proper lifetime $(5.9 \pm 0.1)\times 10^{-13}$s.
