Abstract

The article offers information on heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and the need for immediate detection and treatment in order to reduce morbidity and mortality rates. It references the ninth edition released by the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) in 2012. Diagnosis is made through clinical and serologic assessment. Treatment consists of the discontinuation of heparin exposure and the use of a non-heparin anticoagulant such as lepirudin, argatroban and bivalrudin.
