La forma di allevamento GDC (Geneva Double Curtain) è largamente diffusa nell’areale padano in relazione alla sua adattabilità ai terreni di pianura e pedecollinari con media e buona fertilità dove fornisce interessanti risultati produttivi sia in termini quantitativi che qualitativi. Alla base dell’efficace gestione di questo sistema di allevamento vi è il mantenimento di una netta separazione delle cortine che può essere garantita sia da una corretta potatura invernale che da un’adeguata pettinatura della chioma. La pettinatura, tradizionalmente eseguita manualmente, può essere resa più rapida ed efficiente con l’impiego di specifiche attrezzature. Nel corso del 2019 in un vigneto di Trebbiano romagnolo allevato a GDC in provincia di Ravenna, è stata effettuata una valutazione comparativa della pettinatura manuale, eseguita da due operatori collocati su una piattaforma mobile, rispetto alla pettinatura meccanica eseguita da un prototipo che, grazie all’azione di organi meccanici convogliatori e di un flusso d’aria che agisce sui tralci orientandone la posizione, consente di sostituire quasi totalmente l’azione dell’uomo nel posizionamento dei germogli nell’interfila. L’operazione meccanica è stata eseguita ad una velocità media di 3 km/h ottenendo una capacità di lavoro di 0,51 ha/h circa 5 volte superiore da quella garantita dal cantiere manuale, 0,1 ha/h. Conseguentemente, anche i tempi di impiego della manodopera sono stati nettamente inferiori con la pettinatura meccanica 5,8 h/ha rispetto a 23 h/ha richiesti nell’intervento manuale. Ipotizzando una superficie media di impiego di 20 ha e simulando i costi di richiesti per l’acquisto e la gestione del mezzo meccanico la pettinatura con il prototipo consente di ridurre il costo di intervento di circa il 40% (175 €/ha contro circa 300 €/ha per il cantiere manuale).

La conoscenza della variabilità spaziale delle caratteristiche vegeto-produttive di un vigneto è il presupposto per l’introduzione di tecniche di viticoltura di precisione come l’applicazione a rateo variabile dei nutrienti. In un vigneto non irriguo di Trebbiano romagnolo allevato a GDC sito nella Valle del Senio sono state effettuate, nel corso del 2018 e 2019, misure speditive del vigore vegetativo impiegando sensori prossimali attivi GreenSeeker® applicati su veicolo e misure della distribuzione delle rese e della qualità delle uve sulla base di un reticolo di campionamento rappresentativo dell’intero vigneto. Nel corso dei due anni di indagine sono state inoltre rilevate le fallanze e le piante che presentavano evidenti sintomi del Mal dell’esca e della Flavescenza dorata/ Legno nero, georeferenziandone la posizione tramite GPS. Le informazioni puntuali delle rese, parametri qulitativi e del vigore (NDVI) sono state interpolate e gli strati informativi raster ottenuti sono stati sovrapposti e intersecati per verificare la presenza di sotto aree del campo con comportamento omogeneo. Nel corso dei due anni di prove sono state inoltre realizzate mappe di prescrizione per la fertilizzazione azotata basandosi sulla analisi dei dati di vigore. Sulla base delle mappe di prescrizione sono state effettuate due applicazioni a rateo variabile di fertilizzante azotato che hanno previsto dosi massime di N per le aree di medio vigore, dosi intermedie per le aree caratterizzate da alto vigore e nessuna applicazione per le aree con vigore più basso e quelle che presentavano fallanze e/o piante malate. I campionamenti alla vendemmia hanno indicato produzioni più elevate nelle zone dove prevaleva l’alto vigore, evidenziando che in tali zone la concentrazione zuccherina si attestava su livelli inferiori rispetto alle parti del vigneto meno vigorose. La gestione differenziata del fertilizzante azotato ha consentito di risparmiare 15 unità di azoto mantenendo un adeguato livello di vigore vegetativo sull’intero campo.

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVMs) in children are rare lesions characterized by abnormal low resistance vascular structures connecting a pulmonary artery to a pulmonary vein, resulting in an intrapulmonary right-to-left shunt. The insidious onset and variable signsand symptoms make diagnosis difficult, especially in children. PAVMs can be single or multiple, congenital or acquired, and up to 47-80% of cases are associated with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT).We present the case of a 12-year-old female teenager referred to our center for epistaxis, headache, fatigue and weakness, with evidence of mild oxygen desaturation. Bubble test showed a right-to-left shunt and pulmonary angio-CT confirmed the diagnosis. Percutaneous selective embolization was performed with full recovery of normal arterial oxygen saturation. When differentiating between mild oxygen desaturation and exercise intolerance in children and adolescents, physicians should be aware of the possibility of PAVMs as a cause.&nbsp

Aims : To test the effects of varying degrees of vigour on vine growth, cropping, grape composition and wine quality. Methods and results : The study was conducted in 2008-2009 in a cv. Sangiovese (V. vinifera L.) vineyard (Tuscany). Two uniform zones marked by low (LV) and high (HV) vigour vines were pinpointed using an NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) map. Soil analysis showed similar texture in both zones, but total soil nutrients were lower in LV than in HV. While only LV vines showed soil water content close to wilting point in 2008, they demonstrated lower leaf area and yield and higher berry sugar and anthocyanin concentrations compared to HV vines. Chemical and wine tasting analysis of the wines made in 2009 showed that the LV wines had better sensory attributes than the HV wines, despite their excessive ethanol content. Conclusions : The differences in vigour, yield and must and wine quality of LV compared to HV vines were linked to variations in soil fertility and water retention capacity. Precision vineyard management practices like supplementary fertilization and irrigation should be used to increase vigour and yield and to decrease sugar content in LV grapes. Cover crop may be used in HV vines to decrease their vigour and yield. Significance and impact of the study : The study confirms that the evaluation of within-field variability is crucial for site-specific vineyard management.

High serum levels of testosterone and estradiol, the bioavailability of which may be increased by Western dietary habits, seem to be important risk factors for postmenopausal breast cancer. We hypothesized that an ad libitum diet low in animal fat and refined carbohydrates and rich in low-glycemic-index foods, monounsaturated and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and phytoestrogens, might favorably modify the hormonal profile of postmenopausal women. One hundred and four postmenopausal women selected from 312 healthy volunteers on the basis of high serum testosterone levels were randomized to dietary intervention or control. The intervention included intensive dietary counseling and specially prepared group meals twice a week over 4.5 months. Changes in serum levels of testosterone, estradiol, and sex hormone-binding globulin were the main outcome measures. In the intervention group, sex hormone-binding globulin increased significantly (from 36.0 to 45.1 nmol/liter) compared with the control group (25 versus 4%,; P0.0001) and serum testosterone decreased (from 0.41 to 0.33 ng/ml; -20 versus -7% in control group; P = 0.0038). Serum estradiol also decreased, but the change was not significant. The dietary intervention group also significantly decreased body weight (4.06 kg versus 0.54 kg in the control group), waist:hip ratio, total cholesterol, fasting glucose level, and area under insulin curve after oral glucose tolerance test. A radical modification in diet designed to reduce insulin resistance and also involving increased phytoestrogen intake decreases the bioavailability of serum sex hormones in hyperandrogenic postmenopausal women. Additional studies are needed to determine whether such effects can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.

Aims: Recent trials on Sangiovese vines have shown that hand defoliation of shoot basal leaves at pre-bloom is effective in reducing fruit set and yield, leading to better grape composition and quality. The present work was performed to assess whether similar outcomes could be obtained by a more economically viable mechanical approach, which appears to be extremely attractive in cultivars such as Sangiovese, marked by high or very high yield potential and heavy, fairly compact clusters quite sensitive to rot. Methods and results: The trial was designed to compare pre-bloom mechanical defoliation (MD), hand defoliation (HD) and no defoliation (C) on Sangiovese vertical shoot positioned and spur pruned cordon de Royat trained vines. In the HD treatment, the first six basal leaves of each shoot were removed (70 % of leaf area), whereas in the MD treatment 33 % of the leaf area was removed from the basal part of the shoots. HD and MD compared to C reduced fruit set (HD = 29.8%; MD = 24.2%; C = 35.5 %), yield per shoot (HD = 546 g; MD = 516 g; C = 764 g), cluster weight (HD = 292 g; MD = 272 g; C = 382 g) and berry weight (HD = 2.17 g; MD = 2.31 g; C = 2.45 g), but improved total soluble solids (HD = 23.0 °Brix; MD = 22.5 °Brix; C = 20.8 °Brix) and total anthocyanins (HD = 837 mg/kg of grapes; MD = 744 mg/kg of grapes; C = 647 mg/kg of grapes). Leaf photosynthesis, measured in 2007, increased only temporarily after HD and MD as compared to control. Conclusions: The pre-bloom HD of shoot basal leaves confirmed its positive effect on crop yield control and grape composition, leading to better grape quality. The pre-bloom MD of the basal part of the shoots maintained most of the advantages associated with HD, although only half of the leaf area removed by hand was removed by the machine. Significance and impact of the study: Pre-bloom mechanical defoliation can replace hand defoliation and partially replace the time-consuming and costly manual cluster thinning technique, which is often used in high yield cultivars such as Sangiovese.
