Ecosystem engineers are organisms able to modify their environment by changing the distribution of materials and energy, with effects on biotic and abiotic ecosystem components. Several ecosystem engineers are known, but for most of them the mechanisms behind their influence are poorly known. We detail the role of bats as ecosystem engineers in iron ore caves in the Carajás National Forest, Brazilian Amazonia, an area with > 1,500 caves, some holding ~150,000 bats. We analyzed the chemical composition of guano deposits in bat caves, radiocarbon-dated those deposits, and elucidated the chemical mechanisms involved and the role the bat guano has on modifying those caves. The insect-composed guano was rich in organic matter, with high concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus pentoxide and ferric oxide, plus potassium oxide, calcium and sulfur trioxide. Radiocarbon dating indicated guano deposits between 22,000 and 1,800 years old. The guano pH was mainly acid (from 2.1 to 5.6). Percolating waters in those bat caves were also acid (pH reaching 1.5), with the presence of phosphate, iron, calcium, nitrate and sulfate. Acid solutions due to guano decomposition and possible microbial activity produced various forms of corrosion on the caves´ floor and walls, resulting in their enlargement. Bat caves or caves with evidence of inactive bat colonies had, on average, lengths six times larger, areas five times larger, and volumes five times bigger than the regional average, plus more abundant, diversified and bigger speleothems when compared with other caves. In an example of bioengineering, the long-term presence of bats (> 22,000 years) and the guano deposits they produce, mediated by biological and chemical interactions over millennia, resulted in very unique ecological, evolutionary and geomorphological processes, whose working are just beginning to be better understood by science. However, the current expansion of mineral extraction activities coupled with the loosening of licensing and cave protection rules is a real conservation threat to the bat caves in Carajás. The destruction of those caves would represent an unacceptable loss of both speleological and biological heritage and we urge that, whenever they occur, bat caves and their colonies must be fully protected and left off-limits of mineral extraction.

O carste pode ser entendido como um sistema aberto, uma forma de relevo que resulta de processos que operam em conjunto nos subsistemas hidrológico e geoquímico. Os mecanismos de gênese e desenvolvimento de aquíferos cársticos levam à formação de meios anisotrópicos altamente descontínuos e heterogêneos, na sua estrutura espacial e no seu funcionamento temporal, podendo apresentar estrutura de permeabilidade hierárquica com fluxo turbulento. Apesar das limitações impostas pela anisotropia do meio, a descarga de aquíferos cársticos tende a concentrar-se em uma única ressurgência, permitindo, para entender suas propriedades, o uso da análise de sistemas baseada em estatística de séries temporais. O arranjo espacial complexo da drenagem subterrânea tem implicações no sinal hidrológico do exutório do sistema, de forma que a correta interpretação dos espectros obtidos prescindem de uma adequada caracterização da estrutura da drenagem, por meio testes com traçadores. Neste contexto, este trabalho teve como objetivo investigar o sinal hidrológico e sua relação com os padrões de recarga e a geometria e distribuição espacial das drenagens subterrâneas dos aquíferos do planalto cárstico Alambari-Ouro Grosso, localizados na região cárstica do Vale do Ribeira, município de Iporanga, São Paulo. Os métodos e técnicas utilizados envolveram análises por meio de fotointerpretação, morfometria de depressões poligonais, identificação e tipificação in situ e em gabinete das feições de recarga e descarga do sistema, testes qualitativos e quantitativos com traçadores corantes, obtenção de séries históricas de parâmetros hidrológicos e estatística descritivas exploratórias em séries temporais. Os resultados obtidos a partir de testes com traçadores corantes e análises morfométricas demonstraram a existência, no mesmo sinclinal, de dois sistemas independentes e funcionalmente distintos: i) Sistema Alambari, responsável por drenar quase 80% da área das depressões poligonais do planalto e a maior área da contribuição alóctone aos sistemas (65,9%), apresentando assinaturas hidrológicas típicas de um carste bem desenvolvido; e ii) Ouro Grosso, composta por depressões poligonais menos expressivas, recargas difusas, armazenamento epicárstico/pedológico e comportamento mais inercial. O sistema Alambari apresenta ainda depressões poligonais com as maiores declividades e a maior amplitude altimétrica, o que representa recargas potencialmente mais energéticas que no sistema Ouro Grosso. As séries temporais demonstraram que, em qualquer estação climática, o sistema Ouro Grosso é mais inercial que o sistema Alambari e o efeito memória da vazão menos variável em Alambari, característica provavelmente associada a maior capacidade de drenagem do sistema. Comportamento semelhante ao da vazão foi observado na condutividade elétrica, com exceção no inverno de 2017 (o mais seco), onde observou-se uma subida gradativa da mesma, demonstrando que a memória da condutividade elétrica pode refletir a resposta rápida do sistema a impulsos de chuva ou o comportamento de longo prazo associado à lenta e constante mineralização das águas do sistema. O comportamento da condutividade elétrica no sistema Ouro Grosso é anômalo, uma vez que as injeções de água meteórica no sistema resultam em picos de saturação e não diluição. Este fenômeno foi explicado a partir da noção de \"efeito pistão\", ou seja, um impulsionamento de águas saturadas na rede fraturada e nos reservatórios epicársticos/pedológicos, resultando na disponibilização de água mineralizada ao sistema. A análise das correlações cruzadas mostrou que na relação chuva versus condutividade elétrica, nos períodos relativamente mais secos, a desmineralização da água é menor. As análises também evidenciaram o comportamento dos reservatórios dinâmicos cujo fluxo de água mineralizada aumenta quando a recarga é mais intensa. Karsts can be understood as an open system, a form of relief resulting from processes that operate together in the hydrological and geochemical subsystems. The mechanisms of genesis and development of karst aquifers lead to the formation of highly discontinuous and heterogeneous anisotropic media, in their spatial structure and in their temporal functioning, being able to present a hierarchical permeability structure with turbulent flow. Despite the limitations imposed by the environmental anisotropy, the discharge of karst aquifers tends to concentrate in a single resurgence, allowing, to understand its properties, the use of systems analysis based on time series statistics. The complex spatial arrangement of the underground drainage has implications in the hydrological signal of the exudate of the system, so that the correct interpretation of the obtained spectra doesn\'t have an adequate characterization of the structure of the drainage, through tests with tracers. In this context, the objective of this work was to investigate the hydrological sign and its relation with the recharge patterns and the geometry and spatial distribution of the subterranean drainage of the aquifer of the Alambari-Ouro Grosso karst plateau, located in the karst region of the Ribeira Valley, southeastern Brazil. The methods and techniques used involved analysis through photointerpretation, morphometry of polygonal depressions, in situ identification and typing, and in the recharge and discharge characteristics of the system, qualitative and quantitative tests with dye tracers, obtaining historical series of hydrological parameters and descriptive statistics in time series. The results obtained from tests with dye tracers and morphometric analysis showed the existence, in the same syncline, of two independent and functionally distinct systems: i) Alambari System, responsible for draining almost 80% of the area of the polygonal depressions of the plateau and the largest area of the allochthonous contribution to the systems (65.9%), presenting hydrological signatures typical of a well developed karst; and ii) Ouro Grosso, composed of less expressive polygonal depressions, diffuse refills, epikarst/pedological storage and more inertial behavior. The Alambari system also has polygonal depressions with the highest slopes and the highest altimetric amplitude, which represents potentially more energetic recharges than in the Ouro Grosso system. The time series showed that, in any weather season, the Ouro Grosso system is more inertial than Alambari system and the flow memory effect is less variable in Alambari, a characteristic probably associated to the greater drainage capacity of the system. Similar behavior to the flow rate was observed in the electrical conductivity, except in the winter of 2017 (the driest), where it was observed a gradual increase, demonstrating that the electrical conductivity memory can reflect the rapid response of the system to impulses of rainfall or the long-term behavior associated with the slow and steady mineralization of the system\'s waters. The behavior of the electrical conductivity in the Ouro Grosso system is anomalous, since the injections of meteoric water into the system result in saturation and non-dilution peaks. This phenomenon was explained by the notion of \"piston effect\", a saturated water propulsion in the fractured network and in the epikarst/pedological reservoirs, resulting in the availability of mineralized water to the system. The analysis of the cross correlations showed that in the relationship between rainfall versus electrical conductivity, in the relatively drier periods, water demineralization is lower. The analyzes also showed the behavior of the dynamic reservoirs whose mineralized water flow increases when the recharge is more intense.

The degradation of subterranean habitats is believed to represent a serious threat for the conservation of obligate subterranean dwellers (troglobites), many of which are short-range endemics. However, while the factors influencing cave biodiversity remain largely unknown, the influence of the surrounding landscape and patterns of subterranean connectivity of terrestrial troglobitic communities have never been systematically assessed. Using spatial statistics to analyze the most comprehensive speleological database yet available for tropical caves, we first assess the influence of iron cave characteristics and the surrounding landscape on troglobitic communities from the Eastern Amazon. We then determine the spatial pattern of troglobitic community composition, species richness, phylogenetic diversity, and the occurrence of frequent troglobitic species, and finally quantify how different landscape features influence the connectivity between caves. Our results reveal the key importance of habitat amount, guano, water, lithology, geomorphology, and elevation in shaping iron cave troglobitic communities. While mining within 250 m from the caves influenced species composition, increasing agricultural land cover within 50 m from the caves reduced species richness and phylogenetic diversity. Troglobitic species composition, species richness, phylogenetic diversity, and the occurrence of frequent troglobites showed spatial autocorrelation for up to 40 km. Finally, our results suggest that the conservation of cave clusters should be prioritized, as geographic distance was the main factor determining connectivity between troglobitic communities. Overall, our work sheds important light onto one of the most overlooked terrestrial ecosystems, and highlights the need to shift conservation efforts from individual caves to subterranean habitats as a whole.

An area of 417 km2 in southeastern Brazil was mapped in detail regarding karst features in quartzite. Landforms typically assigned to carbonate karst terrains are largely absent, except for discrete occurrences of towers and collapse dolines. Caves are the most conspicuous landform, although occurring at a lower density than in most Brazilian carbonate areas. A total of 11 caves were mapped and studied in detail. Caves tend to develop at shallow depths parallel to the slope surface, controlled by lithological facies and the hydraulic gradient. Petrographical analyses suggest that mica (sericite) lenses within the quartzite and both sericite and iron around quartz grains may favour grain disaggregation and later erosional removal in a shallow phreatic environment. Quartzite caves represent a common feature in southeastern Brazil but tend to be isolated features rather than an integrated and areally extensive hydrological system typical of many carbonate settings.

O presente trabalho apresenta os resultados da caracterização geoespelológica das Grutas Baixada das Crioulas I e II, bem comoos principais aspectos espeleogenéticos associada a este sistema cárstico desenvolvido em rochas quatzíticas. Há, ainda hoje, grandecontrovérsia em torno da denominação de formas de relevo em rochas não carbonáticas, que apresentam similitudes com aquelasdesenvolvidas em relevo cárstico. Entre essas formas, destacam-se aquelas desenvolvidas em rochas quartzíticas Onze cavernasdesenvolvidas em rochas desta litologia em um conjunto montanhoso situado no município de Itambé do Mato Dentro, borda leste daSerra do Espinhaço Meridional (MG), foram localizadas e analisadas. Elas foram estudadas com o objetivo principal de compreender osprocessos de formação inerentes a essas feições. As cavernas Gruta Baixada das Crioulas I e Gruta Baixada das Crioulas II formam uminteressante sistema cárstico na região, com importantes atributos morfológicos, litológicos, estruturais e de depósitos endorcársticos. AGruta Baixada das Crioulas I destaca-se por seus atributos morfométricos, pois a caverna supera os 1000m de desenvolvimento horizontale 75m de desnível,medidas estas bastante representativas em se tratando de cavernas desenvolvidas em rochas quartzíticas,tanto emMinas Gerais, quanto no Brasil.Palavras-chave: geoespeleologia, sistema cárstico, quartzito, Serra do Espinhaço. This research presents the results of the geospeleological characterization of the caves Gruta Baixada das Crioulas I and II,as well as the main speleogenetic aspects associated to this karst system developed in quartzite rocks. There are still controversies aboutthe denomination of features developed in non-carbonate rocks that present similarities with those developed in karstic relief. Amongthese features, those developed in quartzite rocks can be highlighted. Eleven caves formed in quartzite rocks were found in a mountainouslocation in the municipality of Itambé do Mato Dentro, the eastern border of Serra do Espinhaço Meridional, Minas Gerais State. They werestudied with the objective to understand the inherent processes involved in their formation and development. The caves Gruta Baixada dasCrioulas I and Gruta Baixada das Crioulas II form a karst system with important morphological, lithological, structural and endokarstdeposits that are characteristic of karstic forms. That is the case of the Gruta Baixada das Crioulas I which is outstanding because of itsmorphometric attributes with a length of more than 1000m and a depth of approximately 75m. These measures are fairly representativewhen compared to other caves in quartzite located not only in Minas Gerais but also in Brazil.Keywords: geospeleology, karst system, quartzite, Serra do Espinhaço.

CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico A organização, análise e discussão sobre os sedimentos encontrados em algumas cavernas da região cárstica de Lagoa Santa foi o objetivo deste projeto, que teve como etapa inicial o levantamento daquelas cavernas que continham sedimentos clásticos investigados e seus dados disponíveis na literatura, em que os primeiros modelos sobre a origem, transporte e deposição foram sugeridos. De modo geral, os principais autores para o tema na região demonstram que os sedimentos encontrados nas cavernas são oriundos da cobertura metapelítica (siltitos e argilitos) da Formação Serra de Santa Helena que deu origem a cobertura pedológica atual – alóctone. Esse material inconsolidado chega até as cavernas por meio de fissuras e fendas alargadas – material epicárstico, e com a acoplagem entre as aberturas das cavernas com a vertente. Possuem percentuais elevados de SiO3, Al2O3 e concentrações importantes de FeO3, indicando maior tempo de exposição a condições de lixiviação e concentração de minerais – oxidação e redução. Os sedimentos clásticos autóctones são caracterizados por blocos abatidos de granulometria variada, fragmentos de espeleotemas e o produto residual da rocha, que para os calcários do Membro Lagoa Santa, é incipiente. Quanto aos mecanismos de transporte, prevalecem as corridas de lama ou detritos e suspensão. Estes mecanismos promovem a mistura e seleção do material inconsolidado de acordo com o ambiente de deposição (rede de condutos), que impõem condições distintas a circulação das águas, muitas vezes numa mesma galeria. Quanto à organização dos sedimentos – estratigrafia, apresentam sequências de fácies sedimentares argilosas (muitas vezes cimentadas por calcita), entre o vermelho e o amarelo, com restos fossilíferos da megafauna extinta e da fauna atual, além de fragmentos de calcário, intercalados por níveis calcíticos (pisos estalagmíticos). Desta maneira, foram selecionadas novas cavernas com depósitos de sedimentos passíveis de análises: Grutas da Escada e Irmãos Piriás. Apreendendo um misto de ambientes de deposição influenciados por processos fluviais/lacustres (Gruta Irmãos Piriás) e vadoso (Gruta da Escada), foram realizadas análises descritivas e laboratoriais das fácies sedimentares levantadas nas duas cavernas para relacionar a origem, mecanismos de transporte e o ambiente de deposição aos quais foram submetidos. Os modelos de origem, mecanismos de transporte e deposição apresentados por diversos autores para os depósitos em cavernas da região foram corroborados, tanto nos padrões de granulometria, composição química, organização estratigráfica, como para o ambiente de deposição. Na Gruta da Escada a textura predominantemente argilosa encontrada nas fácies, os elevados percentuais de SiO3, Al2O3 e FeO3, a estratigrafia com contatos erosivos, piso estalagmítico revestindo/selando o depósito, demostram atributos comuns aos da região. Por outro lado, na Gruta Irmãos Piriás, a característica fluvial e o produto residual da rocha (SiO3) deram novas informações sobre tipos de configurações para depósitos de sedimentos clásticos em cavernas do carste Lagoa Santa, onde a granulometria, estratigrafia e a composição química dos sedimentos sofrem forte influência hídrica, concentrando ainda mais óxidos de SiO3 e Al2O3, além de fornecer um ambiente de mistura dos materiais, e organização das fácies representadas por laminações e lentes, associadas a oscilação do nível de água. Particularmente as altas concentrações de sílica podem estar relacionadas ao resíduo insolúvel da rocha (membro Pedro Leopoldo), que apresenta concentrações importantes de sílica (23%), alumínio (2,95%) e ferro (1,75%), superiores às observadas nos calcários do Membro Lagoa Santa. The organization, analysis and discussion of the sediments found in some caves in the karst region of Lagoa Santa was the objective of this project, which had as an initial stage the survey of those caves that contained investigated clastic sediments and their data available in the literature, in which the first models on origin, transport and deposition were suggested. In general, the main authors on the subject in the region demonstrate that the sediments found in the caves come from the metapelitic cover (siltites and claystones) of the Serra de Santa Helena Formation, which gave rise to the current pedological cover – allochthonous. This unconsolidated material reaches the caves through widened fissures and crevices – epikarstic material, and with the coupling between the openings of the caves and the slope. They have high percentages of SiO3, Al2O3 and important concentrations of FeO3, indicating longer exposure time to leaching conditions and mineral concentration – oxidation and reduction. The autochthonous clastic sediments are characterized by collapsed blocks of varied granulometry, speleothem fragments and the rock waste product, which for the limestones of the Lagoa Santa Member, is incipient. As for the transport mechanisms, mud or debris and suspension races prevail. These mechanisms promote the mixing and selection of the unconsolidated material according to the deposition environment (duct network), which impose different conditions for the circulation of water, often in the same gallery. As for the organization of sediments - stratigraphy, they present sequences of clayey sedimentary facies (often cemented by calcite), between red and yellow, with fossiliferous remains of extinct megafauna, current fauna and limestone fragments, interspersed by calcitic levels (stalagmite floors). Thus, new caves with sediment deposits that could be analyzed were selected: Gruta da Escada and Irmãos Piriás. Seizing a mixture of deposition environments influenced by fluvial/lacustrine processes (Gruta Irmãos Piriás) and vadoso (Gruta da Escada), descriptive and laboratory analyzes of the sedimentary facies surveyed in the two caves were carried out to relate the origin, transport mechanisms and the environment of deposition to which they were submitted. The models of origin, transport and deposition mechanisms presented by several authors for the deposits in caves in the region were corroborated, both in terms of particle size, chemical composition, stratigraphic organization, as well as for the deposition environment. In Gruta da Escada, the predominantly clayey texture found in the facies, the high percentages of SiO3, Al2O3 and FeO3, the stratigraphy with erosive contacts, stalagmite floor covering/sealing the deposit, demonstrate attributes common to those of the region. On the other hand, in Gruta Irmãos Piriás, the fluvial characteristics and the rock waste product (SiO3) provided new information on types of configurations for clastic sediment deposits in caves of the karst Lagoa Santa, where the particle size, stratigraphy and chemical composition of sediments suffer strong water influence, concentrating even more SiO3 and Al2O3 oxides, in addition to providing an environment for mixing materials, and organization of facies represented by laminations and lenses, associated with oscillation of the water level. Particularly the high silica concentrations may be related to the insoluble rock residue (Pedro Leopoldo member), which presents important concentrations of silica (23%), aluminum (2.95%) and iron (1.75%), higher than those observed in the limestones of the Lagoa Santa Member.
