Abstract

The Earth climate system is out of energy balance, and heat has accumulated continuously over the past decades, warming the ocean, the land, the cryosphere, and the atmosphere. According to the Sixth Assessment Report by Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, this planetary warming over multiple decades is human-driven and results in unprecedented and committed changes to the Earth system, with adverse impacts for ecosystems and human systems. The Earth heat inventory provides a measure of the Earth energy imbalance (EEI) and allows for quantifying how much heat has accumulated in the Earth system, as well as where the heat is stored. Here we show that the Earth system has continued to accumulate heat, with 381±61 ZJ accumulated from 1971 to 2020. This is equivalent to a heating rate (i.e., the EEI) of 0.48±0.1 W m−2. The majority, about 89 %, of this heat is stored in the ocean, followed by about 6 % on land, 1 % in the atmosphere, and about 4 % available for melting the cryosphere. Over the most recent period (2006–2020), the EEI amounts to 0.76±0.2 W m−2. The Earth energy imbalance is the most fundamental global climate indicator that the scientific community and the public can use as the measure of how well the world is doing in the task of bringing anthropogenic climate change under control. Moreover, this indicator is highly complementary to other established ones like global mean surface temperature as it represents a robust measure of the rate of climate change and its future commitment. We call for an implementation of the Earth energy imbalance into the Paris Agreement's Global Stocktake based on best available science. 3. The complex and spatially diverse patterns of hydrological droughts across Europe

Abstract

This study presents a new data set of gauged streamflow (N = 3,224) for Europe spanning the period 1962–2017. The Monthly Streamflow of Europe Dataset (MSED) is freely available at http://msed.csic.es/. Based on this data set, changes in the characteristics of hydrological drought (i.e., frequency, duration, and severity) were assessed for different regions of Europe. Due to the density of the database, it is possible to delimit spatial patterns in hydrological droughts trend with the greatest detail available to date. Results reveal bidirectional changes in monthly streamflow, with negative changes predominating over central and southern Europe, while positive trends dominate over northern Europe. Temporally, two dominant patterns were noted. The first pattern corresponds to a consistent downward trend in all months, evident for southern Europe. A second pattern was noted over central and northern Europe and western France, with a predominant negative trend during warm months and a positive trend in cold months. For hydrological drought events, results suggest a positive trend toward more frequent and severe droughts in southern and central Europe and conversely a negative trend over northern Europe. This study emphasizes that hydrological droughts show complex spatial patterns across Europe over the past six decades, implying that hydrological drought behavior in Europe has a regional character. Accordingly it is challenging to adopt “efficient” strategies and policies to monitor and mitigate drought impacts at the continental level.

Abstract

This paper reports on a new satellite sensor, the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) experiment. GERB is designed to make the first measurements of the Earth's radiation budget from geostationary orbit. Measurements at high absolute accuracy of the reflected sunlight from the Earth, and the thermal radiation emitted by the Earth are made every 15 min, with a spatial resolution at the subsatellite point of 44.6 km (north--south) by 39.3 km (east--west). With knowledge of the incoming solar constant, this gives the primary forcing and response components of the top-of-atmosphere radiation. The first GERB instrument is an instrument of opportunity on Meteosat-8, a new spin-stabilized spacecraft platform also carrying the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared (SEVIRI) sensor, which is currently positioned over the equator at 3.5[degrees]W. This overview of the project includes a description of the instrument design and its preflight and in-flight calibration. An evaluation of the instrument performance after its first year in orbit, including comparisons with data from the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) satellite sensors and with output from numerical models, are also presented. After a brief summary of the data processing system and data products, some of the scientific studies that are being undertaken using these early data are described. This marks the beginning of a decade or more of observations from GERB, as subsequent models will fly on each of the four Meteosat Second Generation satellites.

Abstract

National audience; Historical in situ sub-daily rainfall observations are essential for the understanding of short-duration rainfall extremes but records are typically not readily accessible and data are often subject to errors and inhomogeneities. Furthermore, these events are poorly quantified in projections of future climate change making adaptation to the risk of flash flooding problematic. Consequently, knowledge of the processes contributing to intense, short-duration rainfall is less complete compared with those on daily timescales. The INTENSE project is addressing this global challenge by undertaking a data collection initiative that is coupled with advances in high-resolution climate modelling to better understand key processes and likely future change. The project has so far acquired data from over 23 000 rain gauges for its global sub-daily rainfall dataset (GSDR) and has provided evidence of an intensification of hourly extremes over the US. Studies of these observations, combined with model simulations, will continue to advance our understanding of the role of local-scale thermodynamics and large-scale atmospheric circulation in the generation of these events and how these might change in the future.

Abstract

Cascade is a multi-institution project studying the temporal and spatial organization of tropical convective systems. While cloud resolving numerical models can reproduce the observed diurnal cycle of such systems they are sensitive to the chosen resolution. As part of this effort, we are comparing results from the Met. Office Unified Model to data from the Global Earth Radiation Budget satellite instrument over the African Monsoon Interdisciplinary Analyses region of North Africa. We use a variety of mathematical techniques to study the outgoing radiation and the evolution of properties such as the cloud size distribution. The effectiveness of various model resolutions is tested with a view to determining the optimum balance between resolution and the need to reproduce the observations.

9. Monitoring changes in precipitation and radiative energy using satellite data and climate models

Abstract

Current changes in the tropical hydrological cycle, including water vapour and precipitation, are\ud presented over the period 1979-2008 based on a diverse suite of observational datasets and\ud atmosphere-only climate models. Models capture the observed variability in tropical moisture while\ud reanalyses cannot. Observed variability in precipitation is highly dependent upon the satellite\ud instruments employed and only cursory agreement with model simulations, primarily relating to the\ud interannual variability associated with the El Niño Southern Oscillation. All datasets display a positive\ud relationship between precipitation and surface temperature but with a large spread. The tendency for\ud wet, ascending regions to become wetter at the expense of dry, descending regimes is in general\ud reproduced. Finally, the frequency of extreme precipitation is shown to rise with warming in the\ud observations and for the model ensemble mean but with large spread in the model simulations. The\ud influence of the Earth’s radiative energy balance in relation to changes in the tropical water cycle are\ud discussed

Abstract

Many studies have been made of the water vapor feedback, in both satellite data and climate model simulations. Most infer the magnitude of the feedback from the variability present in geographical distributions of the key variables, or from their seasonal variations, often using data only over the oceans. It is argued that a more direct measure of the feedback should come from the interannual variability of global mean quantities, because this timescale and space scale is more appropriate for such a global phenomenon. To investigate this suggestion, the feedback derived from the simulations of clear-sky longwave fluxes (CLERA), which used data from the 15-yr reanalysis project of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, is compared with simulations by the latest version of the Hadley Centre climate model. Results are taken from an integration of the atmosphere-only version of the climate model with prescribed sea surface temperatures, as well as from a control and a global warming simulation by the coupled ocean--atmosphere version. There is broad consistency between the results from CLERA and the climate model as to the strength of the feedback, although there is considerable scatter in the CLERA results. The signal of changes in the well-mixed greenhouse gases is weak in CLERA but is dominant in the global warming simulation and has to be removed in order to diagnose the water vapor feedback. This result has implications for the exploitation of long time series of satellite and other data to study this and other feedbacks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Toxic effects of 5-hydroxymethyldeoxyuridine (HMUdR) were studied in white Swiss mice. Pathological, hematological, and clinical chemistry parameters were examined. Systemic toxicity was not observed in mice after ip administration of HMUdR in single doses up to 2000 kg/kg. Mice administered HMUdR daily for 15 days at 200 mg/kg, ip, manifested loss of weight, rough hair coat, diarrhea, swollen abdomens, weakness, lethargy, and a 20% mortality rate. Hematological and clinical chemistry parameters of all mice receiving HMUdR were within normal limits. At necropsy, all organs were grossly normal but microscopic examination of tissues of treated mice revealed the presence of shortened, thickened villi in the small intestine, nuclear vacuolation and necrosis of intestinal crypt epithelial cells, and some cytoplasmic vacuolation causing nuclear margination in hepatocytes. All histological lesions were reversible with cessation of treatment. HMUdR was active against murine L1210 and L5178Y leukemias in cell culture. The concentrations required to inhibit cell growth 50% compared to untrated cells was 2 and 4 μ m , respectively. When HMUdR was administered ip at 50, 100, or 200 mg/kg in five daily doses to mice implanted with L1210 cells, life spans increased 20, 30, or 33% over placebo-treated controls.

Abstract

Massive economic and population growth, and urbanization are expected to lead to a tripling of anthropogenic emissions in southern West Africa (SWA) between 2000 and 2030. However, the impacts of this on human health, ecosystems, food security, and the regional climate are largely unknown. An integrated assessment is challenging due to (a) a superposition of regional effects with global climate change; (b) a strong dependence on the variable West African monsoon; (c) incomplete scientific understanding of interactions between emissions, clouds, radiation, precipitation, and regional circulations; and (d) a lack of observations. This article provides an overview of the DACCIWA (Dynamics–Aerosol–Chemistry–Cloud Interactions in West Africa) project. DACCIWA will conduct extensive fieldwork in SWA to collect high-quality observations, spanning the entire process chain from surface-based natural and anthropogenic emissions to impacts on health, ecosystems, and climate. Combining the resulting benchmark dataset with a wide range of modeling activities will allow (a) assessment of relevant physical, chemical, and biological processes; (b) improvement of the monitoring of climate and atmospheric composition from space; and (c) development of the next generation of weather and climate models capable of representing coupled cloud–aerosol interactions. The latter will ultimately contribute to reduce uncertainties in climate predictions. DACCIWA collaborates closely with operational centers, international programs, policymakers, and users to actively guide sustainable future planning for West Africa. It is hoped that some of DACCIWA’s scientific findings and technical developments will be applicable to other monsoon regions.
