Sub-Saharan Africa is under-represented in global biodiversity datasets, particularly regarding the impact of land use on species population abundances. Drawing on recent advances in expert elicitation to ensure data consistency, 200 experts were convened using a modified-Delphi process to estimate intactness scores: the remaining proportion of an intact reference population of a species group in a particular land use, on a scale from 0 (no remaining individuals) to 1 (same abundance as the reference) and, in rare cases, to 2 (populations that thrive in human-modified landscapes). The resulting bii4africa dataset contains intactness scores representing terrestrial vertebrates (tetrapods: ±5,400 amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and vascular plants (±45,000 forbs, graminoids, trees, shrubs) in sub-Saharan Africa across the regions major land uses (urban, cropland, rangeland, plantation, protected, etc.) and intensities (e.g., large-scale vs smallholder cropland). This dataset was co-produced as part of the Biodiversity Intactness Index for Africa Project. Additional uses include assessing ecosystem condition; rectifying geographic/taxonomic biases in global biodiversity indicators and maps; and informing the Red List of Ecosystems.

Review of the book: Peter, Fabienne. The grounds of political legitimacy. Oxford University Press, 2023, 232 págs.

Purpose: This study examines principal rotation in China to gain empirical insights from the policy analysis and succession strategies that principals employ to gain internal and external support in their new schools. Design/methodology/approach: We employed document analysis and a case study approach. Interviews were conducted with officials in 5 local educational agencies and 40 principals from 5 different regions who were undergoing rotation. Thematic analysis was used to identify common patterns and themes in the interview responses. Findings: We explored how the principal-rotation policy was implemented, including the goals, standards, targeted principals, tools and other aspects of the policy in China. The study revealed the challenges faced by the rotated principals and their succession strategies. Originality/value: Our study contributes to the field of educational leadership by shedding light on the implementation and impact of principal rotation in mainland China.

Purpose: Principals' well-being worldwide is under increasing threat due to the challenging and complex nature of their work and growing demands. This paper aimed at developing and validating a multidimensional Principal Well-being Inventory (PWI) and examining the state and consequences of principal well-being. Design/methodology/approach: This paper involves four independent samples of principals working in schools from Hong Kong and Mainland China. The research design consisted of four phases with four sequential empirical studies. Phase 1 was to establish the content validity (literature review and Study 1); Phase 2 was to test the construct validity (Study 2 and Study 3); Phase 3 was to build the criterion validity (re-use the data from Study 3) and Phase 4 was to test the cross-validity of the PWI (Study 4). Findings: Based on published literature and four successive empirical studies, a 24-item PWI was created via a theoretical-empirical approach of test construction. Validity was confirmed through construct-, content-, criterion- and cross-validity testing. The PWI covers the six important well-being dimensions -- physical, cognitive, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual -- to present a general picture of principals' occupational well-being associated with job nature, well-being literacy, leadership and context. Research limitations/implications: The inventory will aid efforts to promote principal well-being as an essential component of schoolwide well-being, quality education and a wellness society. Practical implications: During the post-COVID-19 period, this project is deemed both critical and timely so that quality education will not be sacrificed due to factors affecting principal well-being. Originality/value: This theoretically and empirically validated inventory serves as a robust tool for comprehensively understanding principal well-being and a fuller exploration of their well-being literacy, drivers and outcomes.

Background: Middle leaders are well placed to exert a positive influence on teacher learning, due in part to their proximity to the classroom. However, to maximise that potential, more needs to be understood about the complex connections between instruction-oriented middle leadership and professional learning, particularly in non-Western contexts. Purpose: This study, undertaken in a Chinese context, investigated how middle leaders, specifically those who headed teaching-research groups (TRGs), enacted their instructional leadership to influence teacher learning and build teacher capacity. Method: A qualitative, multi-case design was employed. Participants included 6 vice-principals, 18 TRG heads and 24 classroom teachers. Data collection, in the form of semi-structured interviews, observations, and field notes, was conducted over four months in six schools in China. Data analysis involved the synthesis of participant narratives to identify how middle leaders made sense of, and promoted, teacher learning through their instructional leadership. Findings: Analysis allowed themes and sub-themes to emerge, suggesting four domains of leadership practice: (i) nurturing teacher job-embedded learning, (ii) creating a climate conducive to teacher learning, (iii) engaging teachers in school-based action research and (iv) mobilising external resources to develop teachers. From this, an early-stage conceptual model was created, describing how middle leaders used their instructional leadership as a primary pathway of influence, and how they emphasised relational bonds and organisational structure to stimulate teacher learning. Conclusion: The findings provide insights into middle leadership in the Chinese context, yielding a view into core practices of middle leadership for teacher learning, and drawing attention to teacher development practices that are relevant in other contexts internationally. Tapping into the potential of the middle leader to support teachers' professional learning can contribute to wider school improvement, ultimately benefitting all learners.

Promoting teacher professional learning by empowering established master teachers as leaders is a priority in many societies, including America, Australia, and Canada. Yet, few systems have implemented strategies that allow this to happen at scale. China is one of the few societies that engage master teachers in spreading learning. They do this through several initiatives, one of which is through Master Teacher Studios (MTSs). This article investigates how teacher leadership is enacted in an MTS and how the studio leader nurtures teacher learning across schools. Teacher leadership is widely touted as powerful means for improving teacher professional learning within and beyond schools. However, relatively few empirical studies have examined how teacher leaders promote teacher professional learning, especially in China. This paper uses one provincial- level MTS in Zhejiang province, an economically and educationally advanced region in China, to explore the leadership practices of the MTS host, a master teacher in promoting the MTS members' professional learning. The paper identifies three major leadership strategies adopted by the host of MTS: acting as a conduit between local government and studio members, "yanchuan shenjiao" ('mentoring in words and demonstrating in deeds'), and providing studio members with intellectual, social, and emotional supports.

The guest-dependent flexibility of the pillared-layered metal-organic framework (MOF), Zn2bdc2dabco·X(guest), where guest = EtOH, DMF or benzene, has been examined by high-pressure single crystal X-ray diffraction. A pressure-induced structural phase transition is found for the EtOH- and DMF-included frameworks during compression in a hydrostatic medium of the guest species, which is dependent upon the nature and quantity of the guest in the channels. The EtOH-included material undergoes a phase transition from P4/mmm to C2/m at 0.69 GPa, which is accompanied by a change in the pore shape from square to rhombus via super-filling of the pores. The DMF-included material undergoes a guest-mediated phase transition from I4/mcm to P4/mmm at 0.33 GPa via disordering of the DMF guest. In contrast, the benzene-included framework features a structure with rhombus-shaped channels at ambient pressure and shows direct compression under hydrostatic pressure. These results demonstrate the large influence of guest molecules on the high-pressure phase behavior of flexible MOFs. Guest-mediated framework flexibility is useful for engineering MOFs with bespoke pore shapes and compressibility.

Purpose: This paper aims to explore developments over the past 25 years in the knowledge base on instruction-oriented middle leadership in schools. The authors document the trends in the literature since middle leadership began to attract scholarly interest in the late 1990s and explore the shifting structural and content patterns in the knowledge base. Design/methodology/approach: The authors use a topographic methodology to analyse both structural elements and major results drawing from 147 peer-reviewed journal articles. Findings: The authors draw on the review's outcomes to propose a model that frames a core set of middle leaders' instructional leadership practices. They also identify the personal, departmental, organizational and external influences shaping middle leadership practices and identify a lack of research conducted outside Anglo-American societies. This gap in the literature suggests the need for the increased study of middle leadership in different national settings and systems and how these influence the practice and enactment of middle leaders around instruction. There is also a need to employ a greater range of methodologies to understand middle leaders' instructional roles. Research limitations/implications The paper lays a foundation for the future development of middle leadership for instruction and highlights signposts to guide future inquiry. Originality/value: The paper contributes to the middle leader knowledge base by focussing on their enactment of instructional leadership.

Limited but increasing research has noted that middle leaders (MLs) play a crucial role in structuring a supportive working environment to help entrepreneurial teachers transform educational innovation into practice. This study aims to increase understanding of the extent to which MLs with different levels of experience influence teacher entrepreneurial behaviour (TEB). The study employs the three dimensions of the 'person-environment fit model,' namely, person-organisation fit, person-group fit, and person-job fit, as a theoretical lens to examine the relationships among MLs, working environment, and TEB. Findings revealed that the more years of experience MLs have in post, the more influence they have in promoting TEB; however, they have limited influence over shaping the working environment, especially the person-organisation environment. Furthermore, the mediating effect of the person-environment fit model was complex because teacher entrepreneurial behaviour was perceived to be a result of the synergy between the person-group and person-job environment. The findings advance knowledge about middle-leadership and teacher-entrepreneurial behaviour across the three dimensions of the person-environment fit model. They also highlight the importance of MLs' leading experience for TEB and further enrich the understanding of how MLs struggle to support TEB in a hierarchical working environment.

Purpose: Despite the continuous growth of empirical studies exploring professional learning communities (PLCs) across different education systems, little is known about PLC instruments developed and used in existing research. This article aims to capture a full picture of existing PLC instruments developed since 1990. In so doing, the authors also pay attention to the seminal work of Karen Seashore Louis in alignment with the theme of the special issue. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the authors' searching databases, the authors identified eleven PLC instruments and 26 applied studies using the PLC instruments since 1990. Following this, the authors closely reviewed the identified studies and their relationships (i.e. which one influences which). Findings: The authors' review illuminates the measurement domains, conceptual origins and methodological soundness of the existing instruments and captures the impact of Louis's work on the applied studies using PLC instruments. Originality/value: Given that PLCs are seen as a policy measure to sustain and scale up school improvement internationally, the authors' review provides a better understanding of what and how researchers have measured the effect of PLCs on school improvement. As the first of its kind, the authors believe that their findings can give researchers valuable ideas about how to develop and use a PLC instrument.

This paper addresses the critical challenge of detecting, separating, and classifying partial discharges in substations. It proposes two solutions: the first involves developing a signal conditioning system to reduce the sampling requirements for PD detection and increase the signal-to-noise ratio. The second approach uses machine learning techniques to separate and classify PD based on features extracted from the conditioned signal. Three clustering algorithms (K-means, Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), and Mean-shift) and the Support Vector Machine (SVM) method were used for signal separation and classification. The proposed system effectively reduced high-frequency components up to 50 MHz, improved the signal-to-noise ratio, and effectively separated different sources of partial discharges without losing relevant information. An accuracy of up to 93% was achieved in classifying the partial discharge sources. The successful implementation of the signal conditioning system and the machine learning-based signal separation approach opens avenues for more economical, scalable, and reliable PD monitoring systems.

Seven multi-component molecular crystals containing O-H⋯O/O+-H⋯O- and N+-H⋯O- short strong hydrogen bonds (SSHBs) have been engineered by combining substituted organic acids with hydrogen bond acceptor molecules N,N-dimethylurea and isonicotinamide. In these materials, the shortest of the SSHBs are formed in the N,N-dimethylurea set for the ortho/para nitro-substituted organic acids whilst a twisted molecular approach favours the shorter SSHBs N+-H⋯O- in the isonicotinamide set. Temperature dependent proton migration behaviour has been explored in these systems using single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SCSXRD). By using a protocol which considers a combination of structural information when assessing the hydrogen atom (H-atom) behaviour, including refined H-atom positions alongside heavy atom geometry and Fourier difference maps, temperature dependent proton migration is indicated in two complexes (2: N,N-dimethylurea 2,4-dinitrobenzoic acid 1 : 1 and 5: isonicotinamide phthalic acid 2 : 1). We also implement Hirshfeld atom refinement for further confidence in this observation; this highlights the importance of having corroborating trends when applying the SCSXRD technique in these studies. Further insights into the SSHB donor-acceptor distance limit for temperature dependent proton migration are also revealed. For the O-H⋯O/O+-H⋯O- SSHBs, the systems here support the previously proposed maximum limit of 2.45 Å whilst for the charge assisted N+-H⋯O- SSHBs, a limit in the region of 2.55 Å may be suggested.

Microbiota-induced production of IL-22 by type 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3) plays an important role in maintaining intestinal health. Such IL-22 production is driven, in part, by IL-23 produced by gut myeloid cells that have sensed select microbial-derived mediators. The extent to which ILC3 can directly respond to microbial metabolites via IL-22 production is less clear, in part due to the difficulty of isolating and maintaining sufficient numbers of viable ILC3 ex vivo. Hence, we, herein, examined the response of the ILC3 cell line, MNK-3, to microbial metabolites in vitro. We observed that fecal supernatants (FS), by themselves, elicited modest levels of IL-22 and synergized with IL-23 to drive robust IL-22 production assayed by qRT-PCR and ELISA. The IL-22 synergistic activity of FS was not mimicked by an array of candidate microbial metabolites but could be attributed to bacterial proteins. Examining how MNK3 cells exposed to IL-23, FS, both, or neither via RNA-seq and immunoblotting indicated that FS activated MNK-3 cells in a distinct pattern from IL-23: FS activates p-38 MAPK while IL-23 activates STAT3 signaling pathways. Collectively, these studies indicate ILC3 sensing of microbiota proteins promotes IL-22 production suggesting the possibility of manipulating microbiota to increase IL-22 without risk of IL-23-mediated chronic inflammatory diseases. HtpB, the chaperonin of the bacterial pathogen L. pneumophila, is found in extracellular locations, even the cytoplasm of host cells. Although chaperonins have an essential cytoplasmic function in protein folding, HtpB exits the cytoplasm to perform extracellular virulence-related functions that support L. pneumophila's lifestyle. The mechanism by which HtpB reaches extracellular locations is not currently understood. To address this experimental gap, immunoelectron microscopy, trypsin-accessibility assays, and cell fractionation were used to localize HtpB in various L. pneumophila secretion mutants. Dot/Icm type IV secretion mutants displayed less surface-exposed HtpB and more periplasmic HtpB than parent strains. The analysis of periplasmic extracts and outer membrane vesicles of these mutants, where HtpB co-localized with bona fide periplasmic proteins, confirmed the elevated levels of periplasmic HtpB. Genetic complementation of the mutants recovered parent strain levels of surface-exposed and periplasmic HtpB. The export of GSK-tagged HtpB into the cytoplasm of infected cells was also Dot/Icm-dependent. The translocating role of the Dot/Icm system was not specific for HtpB because GroEL, the chaperonin of Escherichia coli, was found at the cell surface and accumulated in the periplasm of Dot mutants when expressed in L. pneumophila. These findings establish that a functional Dot/Icm system is required for HtpB to reach extracellular locations, but the mechanism by which cytoplasmic HtpB reaches the periplasm remains partially unidentified. In allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), a minority of patients have access to a suitable human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched related donor (MRD). To fill this gap, matched unrelated donors (MUDs) are an increasingly selected donor source. Usage and outcomes after MUD HCT for Canada are not described. We investigated temporal trends in MUD compared to MRD HCT from 2000 to 2019 using data reported to the Cell Therapy and Transplant Canada (CTTC) Registry. Of 7571 first allogeneic HCTs between 2000 and 2019, the proportion of MUD HCTs rose from 35.1% to 56.3% in the early (2000–2009) and later (2010–2019) eras, respectively. Comparing the two donor sources, the 5-year overall survival (OS) after MUD HCT for patients with malignant diseases was inferior to MRD HCT in the early era (p < 0.001). However, in the later era, OS was comparable for the two donor sources (p = 0.969). For patients with non-malignant diseases, the 5-year OS after MUD HCT was inferior to MRD in the early era (p < 0.001), but in the later era, the 5-year OS was similar between the two donor sources (p = 0.209). Improvements in OS after MUD HCT were accompanied by corresponding reductions in the 2-year non-relapse mortality after MUD HCT. We conclude that MUDs are the most common donor source in Canada, and key clinical outcomes after MUD have improved over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to almost identical boiling points of benzene and cyclohexane, the extraction of trace benzene from cyclohexane is currently performed via the energy-intensive extractive distillation method. Their adsorptive separation by porous materials is hampered by their similar dimensions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with versatile pore environments are capable of molecular discrimination, but the separation of trace substrates in liquid-phase remains extremely challenging. Herein, we report a robust MOF (NKU-300) with triangular channels decorated with crown ether that can discriminate trace benzene from cyclohexane, exhibiting an unprecedented selectivity of 8615(10) for the mixture of benzene/cyclohexane (v/v = 1/1000). Remarkably, NKU-300 demonstrates exceptional selectivities for the extraction of benzene from cyclohexane over a wide range of concentrations of 0.1%–50% with ultrafast sorption kinetics and excellent stability. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and computational modelling reveal that multiple supramolecular interactions cooperatively immobilise benzene molecules in the triangular channel, enabling superior separation performance. Background: In Canada, as many as 24% of mothers are deferred from cord blood (CB) donation due to risk factors for Zika virus (ZIKV). However, the ZIKV epidemic has waned considerably since 2016, and there has not been any report of ZIKV transmission by CB transplantation, which questions this policy. Thus, we performed an analysis of the risk of introducing ZIKV in the CB supply maintained by Héma‐Québec (HQ) and Canadian Blood Services (CBS). Study Design and Methods: This simulation considered the following parameters: the risk of travel exposure in a high‐risk ZIKV country, the duration of travel, the daily risk of acquiring ZIKV in a high‐risk country, the probability of materno‐fetal ZIKV transmission, the probability of asymptomatic fetal viremia, and the probability of sexual transmission. A hundred million Monte Carlo simulations were run. Results: In the most‐likely scenario (probability of traveling to a high‐risk ZIKV country while pregnant = 0.178), the risk was estimated at 0.9 ZIKV‐positive donations per million donations (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.4–1.6)—or one every 868 years at HQ and one every 453 years at CBS. In the pessimistic model (probability of traveling to a high‐risk ZIKV country while pregnant = 0.240), the risk was estimated at 1.2 ZIKV‐positive donations per million donations (95% CI = 0.6–2.1)—or one every 644 years at HQ and one every 340 years at CBS. Discussion: We conclude that the risk of introducing ZIKV in the Canadian CB supply is too small to justify maintaining the current policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The response of the crystallographic structure of iodic acid has been determined using neutron diffraction up to 7.2 GPa. We observe no evidence of a direct structural phase transition. However, we do observe evidence of a molecular re-orientation, previously suggested by a high pressure experimental Raman study and computational study. We show how the crystal structure responds to the application of pressure and observe an increased extent of the halogen-bonding interactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study aimed to illustrate how contact (from match‐event data) and head acceleration event (HAE) (from instrumented mouthguard [iMG]) data can be combined to inform match limits within rugby. Match‐event data from one rugby union and rugby league season, including all competitive matches involving players from the English Premiership and Super League, were used. Playing exposure was summarised as full game equivalents (FGE; total minutes played/80). Expected contact and HAE exposures at arbitrary thresholds were estimated using match‐event and iMG data. Generalised linear models were used to identify differences in contact and HAE exposure per FGE. For 30 FGEs, forwards had greater contact than backs in rugby union (n = 1272 vs. 618) and league (n = 1569 vs. 706). As HAE magnitude increased, the differences between positional groups decreased (e.g., rugby union; n = 34 and 22 HAE >40 g for forwards and backs playing 30 FGEs). Currently, only a relatively small proportion of rugby union (2.5%) and league (7.3%) players exceeded 25 FGEs. Estimating contact and HAEs per FGE allows policymakers to prospectively plan and model estimated overall and position‐specific loads over a season and longer term. Reducing FGE limits by a small amount would currently only affect contact and HAE exposure for a small proportion of players who complete the most minutes. This may be beneficial for this cohort but is not an effective HAE and contact exposure reduction strategy at a population level, which requires individual player management. Given the positional differences, FGE limits should exist to manage appropriate HAE and contact exposure. Highlights: Estimating contact events and head acceleration events (HAEs) per full game equivalents (FGE, i.e., 80 minutes) allows policymakers to prospectively plan and model estimated overall and position‐specific loads over a season and longer term.Through retrospectively analysing FGE exposure, the findings demonstrate that only a small proportion of rugby players would be affected by a feasible reduction in FGE limits, but the difference in contact and HAE exposure for these players could be significant over the duration of a playing career.Per FGE in both rugby codes, forwards have a greater expected contact and head acceleration event exposure than backs, and thus any implemented FGE limits should at least be position group‐specific and ideally incorporate individual player management. Background: Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation remains limited when stem cell registrants cannot be contacted, are not medically fit, are unavailable, or unwilling to proceed. In a recent report, registrants who were prior blood donors were more likely to be available for donation. In this study, we analyzed extent to which recruiting blood donors to the Canadian Blood Services Stem Cell Registry (CBS SCR) can meet targets for ethnic diversity, age, and proximity to collection facilities. Methods and Results: We analyzed 124,496 active blood donors on July 1, 2023 regarding the criteria for recruitment to the CBS SCR. A total of 40,518 (32%) were younger than 36 years of age and 49% were first‐time donors (potential new recruits year over year). The ethnicity of blood donors younger than 36 years aligns more closely with the 2021 Canadian census compared to stem cell donors who were also previous blood donors, and to the current total inventory of all registrants on the CBS SCR. Of the blood donors, certain ethnic groups, including Black, Chinese, and First Nations/Indigenous, remain underrepresented. A greater proportion of active whole blood donors live within 400 km of a stem cell collection center (91%) compared to stem cell donors who donated during the past 10 years (80%). Conclusions: Recruitment of blood donors offers an opportunity to improve the ethnic diversity of the CBS SCR and increase proximity of registrants to stem cell collection centers. This paper explores the use of Lesson Study in primary schools in England as a powerful tool for developing teachers' pedagogical knowledge, and for shaping teaching practices that encourage children's engagement. Through Lesson Study, a critical space for dialogic engagement is generated, wherein children contribute to, and shape, teaching and teacher learning. Teachers' perspectives of using Lesson Study were captured using 26 semi-structured interviews and Bourdieu's notion of capital was used to conceptualise and analyse the impact on children. It is proposed that Lesson Study generates opportunities for teachers to explore relations of power through dialogue between teacher and child.

Purpose: This study aims to describe and analyze an innovative mechanism of teacher-led, system-wide professional learning that has been widely adopted since the beginning of the twenty-first century in China--the Master Teacher Studio (MTS). Design/methodology/approach: This paper drew from policy documents, published Chinese literature relating to MTSs and personal fieldwork experience in Shanghai, Guangdong and Zhejiang province. Findings: The article first outlines the context framing the system change, including its policy background and evolution, and then the MTS's purpose, formative process and structure. It finally examines major teacher learning activities and the leadership roles of the MTS hosts (leaders). Research limitations/implications: This study contributed to the knowledge base of system teacher leaders and how they lead cross-school leading. Practical implications: The MTS initiative described in this article shows the power of central system leadership to spread and embed effective teacher learning practices at schools. Originality/value: This article provides implications for understanding and practicing teacher system leadership to support teacher professional learning in different societies.
