Due to pollution and climate-change fear, further increased by the COVID19 pandemic, consumers are looking for body and mind health by the request of more effective and safe products, including the anti-aging skincare cosmeceuticals.. The term “cosmeceuticals” was coined in 1962 as a fusion of cosmetic and pharmaceutical to cover a new class of products able to achieve aesthetic and drug-like benefits. They not only improve the skin’s appearance, but also treat different dermatological conditions, through a physiological activity, shown by in vitro and in vivo studies. This new category of cosmetics should contain no recognized drugs, but nonetheless have medicinal value. Consumers, in fact, are looking for products able to regenerate the skin and maintain not only a youthful appearance together with well-ness and well-being, but preserving the environment also. Consequently, they are searching for cosmetics and food made with high-quality natural ingredients, packaged with biodegradable materials and realized by sustainable technologies, possibly at zero waste. Consumers, in fact, are afraid of the pollution and plastics invading lands and oceans, causing many frequent disasters on our planet. New and smart tissues and films, made by polysaccharides and natural active ingredients, are proposed as innovative cosmeceuticals. These non-woven tissues, embedded by micro/nano complexes of chitin and lignin encapsulating different active ingredients, could represent a new category of vehicles that are characterized for their high effectiveness and safeness. Moreover, they do not induce allergic nor sensitizing phenomena, being biodegradable; skin- and environmentally friendly; and free of preservatives, emulsifiers, colors, fragrances and any kind of chemicals. Last but not least, polysaccharides, chitin and lignin may be obtained from industrial and agro-forestry waste, safeguarding the natural raw materials for the future generations.

The present study deals with the evaluation of the age-defying potential of topical cream formulations bearing Geranium essential oil/Calendula essential oil-entrapped ethanolic lipid vesicles (ELVs). Two types of cream formulations were prepared, viz., conventional and ELVs spiked o/w creams. Essential oil- (EO-) loaded ELVs were characterized by vesicle size, polydispersity index, encapsulation efficiency, and scanning electron microscopy. The cream formulations were evaluated for homogeneity, spreadability, viscosity, pH, in vitro antioxidant capacity, sun protection factor, and in vitro collagenase and elastase inhibition capacity. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was performed to ascertain skin permeation of conventional and vesicular cream. The results of in vitro antioxidant studies showed that GEO-/CEO-loaded vesicular creams have notable antioxidant capacity when compared to nonvesicular creams. GEO- or CEO-loaded vesicular creams exhibited the highest SPF value 10.26 and 18.54, respectively. Both the EO-based vesicular creams showed in vitro collagenase and elastase enzyme inhibition capacity. CLSM images clearly depicted that vesicular cream deep into the skin layers. From the research findings, the age-defying potential and photoprotective effects of GEO and CEO were confirmed. It can be concluded that ELVs are able to preserve the efficiency of EOs and have the potential to combat skin aging.

The present investigation was aimed to find out the sun protection factor (SPF) and antioxidant potential of geranium essential oil (GEO) and calendula essential oil (CEO) because having a combination of these two properties moves up the oils as an active ingredient of various cosmeceutical formulations for their preventive and protective properties. Essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation of Pelargonium graveolens leaves (GEO) and Calendula officinalis flowers (CEO). The composition and identification of chemical constituents of oils were determined by GCMS analysis. Free radical scavenging activity was measured by nitric oxide scavenging activity and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. It was observed that both GEO and CEO have the potential to reduce or prevent oxidative stress and can be used in skin care regimen to slow down skin aging via its antioxidant properties. In vitro SPF was determined by a very simple and rapid spectroscopic method. SPF value of GEO and CEO was found to 6.45 and 8.36, respectively. The SPF of CEO was higher than GEO, and the results of SPF show that these essential oils can be employed in sunscreen formulations to protect the skin from sunburn. From the results, it can be concluded that the combined antioxidant and SPF property of GEO and CEO can provide synergistic photoprotective effect or lift up the additional value of the cosmeceutical formulation.

The present study deals with the evaluation of antiaging potential of carrot seed oil-based cosmetic emulsions. Briefly, cosmetic emulsions composed of carrot seed oil in varying proportions (2, 4, and 6% w/v) were prepared using the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) technique. Coconut oil, nonionic surfactants (Tween 80 and Span 80), and xanthan gum were used as the oil phase, emulgent, and emulsion stabilizer, respectively. The formed emulsions were evaluated for various physical, chemical, and biochemical parameters such as the zeta potential, globule size measurement, antioxidant activity, sun protection factor (SPF), skin irritation, and biochemical studies. The zeta potential values ranged from -43.2 to -48.3, indicating good stability. The polydispersity index (PDI) of various emulsion formulations ranged from 0.353 to 0.816. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl- (DPPH) and nitric oxide-free radical scavenging activity showed the antioxidant potential of the prepared carrot seed oil emulsions. The highest SPF value (6.92) was shown by F3 having 6%w/v carrot seed oil. Histopathological data and biochemical analysis (ascorbic acid (ASC) and total protein content) suggest that these cosmetic emulsions have sufficient potential to be used as potential skin rejuvenating preparations.

In the present scenario, consumers are searching for personal care products that supply multiple benefits with minimal efforts. The outcome has been the introduction of nanotechnology-based cosmetic products that are safe to use and results driven. Some topical cosmetics can act efficaciously when they reach their target sites present in the deeper layers of the skin. The main problem with delivering active ingredients across the skin is the barrier function of the skin. Therefore, to get the maximum benefit from cosmetic products and to overcome the problems associated with their skin penetration, scientists are investigating various strategies to overcome these barrier properties. Vesicular carriers have been claimed to improve the topical delivery of active ingredients. This review offers a brief overview of current approaches in the research and development of vesicular carriers to improve the delivery and performance of active ingredients present in the cosmetics.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of addition of surfactant and water in diesel and to make an emulsified fuel considering the needs for vehicle performance and its cleanest possible operation. The total surfactant concentration in each of the diesel-water emulsion samples studied (span 20, span 80, tween 20, tween 80) is fixed at 1% w/w. The water content is variable at 5–15% w/w and the diesel content is varied from 84 to 94% w/w. Among all the tested nonionic surfactants, tween 80 is found to prominently reduce the carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Tween 20 reduced the NOx emission to a greater extent. Diesel emulsion with a fixed ratio of span 80 and tween 80 (1:1) efficiently reduced the overall emissions as compared to diesel alone. Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) beads of κ-Carrageenan and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) containing Ibuprofen were prepared by water-in-water emulsion gelation process using AlCl 3 as a cross-linking agent. The impact of different formulation variables like polymer ratio, gelation time, concentration of crosslinker on physico-chemical parameters and in-vitro drug release were studied. The IPN beads were investigated through Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. The prepared beads were slightly rough, folded spherical in shape and reflected improved drug encapsulation efficiency. Swelling ability and drug release of beads in alkaline medium was substantial as that of acidic medium. Formulations showed non-Fickian transport mechanism. The results of the study indicate that drug-loaded pH sensitive IPN beads could be used to diminish drug release in an acidic medium and to regulate the drug release in alkaline medium, which would help to minimize the gastric side effects of the model NSAID ibuprofen.

Polymers have always been valuable excipients in conventional dosage forms, also have shown excellent performance into the parenteral arena, and are now capable of offering advanced and sophisticated functions such as controlled drug release and drug targeting. Advances in polymer science have led to the development of several novel drug delivery systems. Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) have shown superior performances over the conventional individual polymers and, consequently, the ranges of applications have grown rapidly for such class of materials. The advanced properties of IPNs like swelling capacity, stability, biocompatibility, nontoxicity and biodegradability have attracted considerable attention in pharmaceutical field especially in delivering bioactive molecules to the target site. In the past few years various research reports on the IPN based delivery systems showed that these carriers have emerged as a novel carrier in controlled drug delivery. The present review encompasses IPNs, their types, method of synthesis, factors which affects the morphology of IPNs, extensively studied IPN based drug delivery systems, and some natural polymers widely used for IPNs.

Aim: The objective of the present research work was to develop stable extended release (ER) pellets of propranolol hydrochloride, an antihypertensive drug, for which drug release profi le is compared with reference to the multiple conventional dosage form i.e. marketed product “Inderal LA” (160 mg). Method: ER formulations were developed using fl uid bed layering and coating techniques on sugar spheres. Pellets were characterized in reference to the drug content, size distribution, scanning electron microscopy (SEM); dissolution study of various formulations was performed in 1.2 pH HCl buffer for 1.5 hours followed by testing in 6.8 pH phosphate buffer for 24 hours (USP Criteria). Stability studies of the optimized formulation were carried out for a period of 30 days at 40 ± 2°C and 75 ± 5% relative humidity and were found to be stable. SEM photograph confi rmed that the prepared pellets were spherical in nature. The drug content of the formulations was found in the range of 98 to 99.7% and the mean particle size of the drug loaded pellets was in the range of 1190 to 420 μm (F1 to F3 formulation). In the recent years pulmonary drug delivery system is found to be preferred route of administration for various drugs. It has been divided into 3 classes: Nebulizers, pMDI, DPI.DPI are used as an alternative to pMDI because pMDI contains propellant (CFC) which has ozone depletion characteristics. DPI delivers medication in the form of dry powder to lungs. DPI is formulated either as a carrier based system or carrier free system. A wide range of dry powder inhaler devices are presently available in the market to deliver drugs with maximum drug delivery and low variability. This review focuses on the DPI formulation, factors affecting performance of DPI, and evaluation parameters. The development of DPI is governed by regulatory bodies. Cosmeceuticals are the fastest growing segment of the personal care industry, and a number of topical cosmeceutical treatments for conditions such as photoaging, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and hair damage have come into widespread use. In the cosmeceutical arena nanotechnology has played an important role. Using new techniques to manipulate matter at an atomic or molecular level, they have been at the root of numerous innovations, opening up new perspectives for the future of cosmeceutical industry. Nanotechnology-based cosmeceuticals offer the advantage of diversity in products, and increased bioavailability of active ingredients and increase the aesthetic appeal of cosmeceutical products with prolonged effects. However increased use of nanotechnology in cosmeceuticals has raised concern about the possible penetration of nanoparticles through the skin and potential hazards to the human health. This review outlines the different nanoparticles used in various classes of cosmeceuticals, nanotechnology-based cosmeceutical products present in the market, and the potential risk caused by nanoparticles on exposure and recent regulatory steps taken to overcome them.

The aim of this study is to review the advantages of mucoadhesive microspheres, mechanisms, and theories involved in mucoadhesion, factors that affect the mucoadhesion and polymers in mucoadhesive drug delivery systems. Gastroretentive drug delivery systems are those which are retained in the stomach for a longer period of time and thereby improve the bioavailability of drugs. Mucoadhesion is a topic of current interest in the design of drug delivery systems. Mucoadhesion is currently explained by six theories: electronic, adsorption, wetting, mechanical, diffusion, and fracture. Microspheres constitute an important part of these particulate drug delivery systems by virtue of their small size and efficient carrier capacity, but coupling of bioadhesive properties to these microspheres has additional advantages such as prolong residence time of the dosage form at the site of absorption and intimate contact of the dosage form with the underline absorption surface contributed to improved therapeutic performance of the drug or improved bioavailability of drug, reduced dosing frequency, and improved patience compliance.
