Introduction: Overexpression and the amplification of proto-oncogenic c-erythroblastic oncogene B (c-erbB-2) (HER-2/neu) encode transmembrane growth factor glycoprotein and are a part of the type I receptor tyrosine-protein kinase. It is known to play a role in the treatment of breast and stomach carcinomas. C-erbB-2 overexpression and amplification in urothelial carcinomas have also been demonstrated in many studies. However, possible treatment options and prognostic values are still not sufficiently defined. This study aims to determine the overexpression rate of c-erbB-2 in urothelial carcinomas. In addition, we sought to determine if there was a relationship between c-erbB-2 overexpression and clinical-pathological prognostic factors, such as histological grade, pathological stage, lymph node and distant organ metastasis, and survival time. Methods: C-erbB2 overexpression was examined using an immunohistochemical method performed on paraffin block samples of patients diagnosed with primary bladder urothelial carcinoma (n=41). The relationship of the data obtained after this examination with classical clinical-pathological prognostic factors, such as histological grade, pathological stage, regional lymph node metastasis, distant organ metastasis, and survival, was investigated. The obtained data were evaluated statistically. The alpha significance value was 0.05. Results: C-erbB-2 overexpression was positive in 9.75% (4/41) of the cases. c-erbB-2-positive tumors were all found to be at a high level. One patient was in stage T2, one stage T3, and two in stage T4. Three positive cases had lymph node metastasis; one patient did not have lymph node metastasis. Remote organ metastasis was not observed in any positive cases, and all positive cases were reported to survive. The fact that 75% (3/4) of the positive cases were lymph node metastasis may contribute to the literature. Discussion and Conclusion: Standardized laboratory methods should be used and studied in large series, including more patients representing various races to evaluate c-erbB-2 overexpression and amplification status in urothelial tumors as a treatment option with prognostic value. Background: Protein tyrosine kinase-7, a regulatory protein in the Wnt signaling pathway, was highly overexpressed in various cancer types and assumed to be related to prognosis. Aims: The purpose of this study is to assess whether protein tyrosine kinase-7 expression status in curatively resected gastric carcinoma would independently identify patients with a high risk of recurrence and death. Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: We included patients who were at least 18 years of age and diagnosed with gastric cancer. The exclusion criterion was a metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis or operation. Data on clinicopathological prognostic determinants and clinical courses, including the date of disease relapse and survival status, were collected with the use of medical records. Surgically removed tumor tissue specimens were examined by two independent pathologists at the pathology department of our institution. Protein tyrosine kinase-7 expression status was assessed with immunohistochemical processing and stratified on a scale ranging from 0 to +3 according to the extent of stained tumor cells. It was then further categorized into two groups, one being + (positive), including +1, +2, and +3 scores, another was-(negative), including-and +/- scores. Results: A total of 114 patients were analyzed. Protein tyrosine kinase-7 expression was present in 66.7% of the surgical tumor specimens. There was no statistically significant difference in almost all relevant parameters between the protein tyrosine kinase-7 positive and negative groups. The estimated median survival in the protein tyrosine kinase-7 positive group was significantly better than the protein tyrosine kinase-7 negative group (60 vs 22 months, p<0.001). Disease-free survival was found to be 55 months in the protein tyrosine kinase-7 positive group, whereas it was 21 months in the negative group (p=0.015). In the multivariate analysis, along with negative protein tyrosine kinase-7 expression, poor performance status, and advanced stage were significantly associated with the risk of death (p<0.001 for each). Conclusion: Compared to patients with negative PTK-7 expression, patients with positive PTK-7 expression have better disease-free survival and overall survival rates. Nodal (N) status and molecular subtypes are well-known prognostic factors for breast cancer patients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether there was a prognostic role of molecular subtypes for pN3a breast cancer patients in the modern therapeutic era. The present study retrospectively evaluated a total of 521 breast cancer patients who had 10 or more metastatic lymph nodes and received adjuvant systemic therapy at the Oncology Department of four different centers in Turkey between 2000–2015. Patients were divided into four molecular subtypes by immunohistochemical staining. There were no significant differences in relapse rates according to the molecular subtypes (P=0.07). The five year disease free survival rate was 62% for the whole study population, 67% for Luminal A tumors, 53% for Luminal B tumors, 64% for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive tumors and 56% for triple negative tumors. Luminal A patients had a better progression free survival when compared with Luminal B (P=0.026) and triple negative (P=0.07) patients. pT stage (P<0.001), and breast cancer subtype (P<0.001), remained significant independent factors for disease free survival. Objective: The treatment of gastroesophageal junction tumors remains controversial due to confusion on whether they should be considered as primary esophageal or as gastric tumors. The incidence of these tumors with poor prognosis has increased, thus creating scientific interest on gastroesophageal cancers. Esophagogastric cancers are classified according to their location by Siewert, and the treatment of each type varies. We evaluated the prognostic factors and differences in clinicopathologic factors of patients with gastroesophageal junction tumor, who have been treated and followed-up in our clinics. Material and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 187 patients with gastroesophageal junction tumors who have been operated and treated in the Oncology Department between 2005 and 2014. The chi-square test was used to evaluate differences in clinicopathologic factors among Siewert groups I, II and III. Prognostic factors were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analysis. Results: The median age of our patients was 62 years, and approximately 70% was male. Nineteen patients (10.2%) had Siewert I tumors, 40 (21.4%) II, and the remaining 128 (64.4%) had Siewert III tumors. Siewert III tumors were at more advanced pathologic and T stages. Preoperative chemoradiotherapy was mostly applied to Siewert group I patients. There was no difference between the 3 groups in terms of recurrence. While the median overall survival and 2-year overall survival rate were 26.6 months and 39.6%, the median disease free survival and disease free survival rates were 16.5 months and 30.1%, respectively. The N stage, pathologic stage, vascular invasion, lymphatic invasion, perineural invasion, surgical margin, and grade were associated with both overall survival and disease free survival, while pathologic stage and presence of recurrence were significant factors for overall survival. The median disease free survival for Siewert III tumors was 20 months, 11.3 month for Siewert I tumors, and 14 months for Siewert II tumors, but the finding was not statistically significant (p=0.08). Conclusion: Although gastroesophageal junction tumors were grouped according to their location and they exerted different clinicopathologic properties, their prognosis was similar. Background: Anxiety and fatigue are symptoms typically experienced by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. In dealing with these symptoms, listening to music may help patients. Methods: The randomized controlled study was conducted between May 1, 2022 and November 10, 2022 with 60 patients treated in the outpatient chemotherapy unit. The data were gathered using a patient information form, Brief Fatigue Inventory, and the State Trait Anxiety Inventory. In addition to standard treatment and care, 30-minute music was played with a passive listening method in a total of three cycles of chemotherapy in the intervention group patients who completed the first cycle and visited for the second cycle of chemotherapy. Results: According to the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) findings, the group variable significantly affected the post-test state anxiety scores when an adjustment was made for pre-test state anxiety scores (F = 240.398, P < 0.001, η² = 0.808). In addition, pretest state anxiety scores affected post-test results (F = 7.925, P = 0.007, η² = 0.122). According to the ANCOVA findings, the group variable significantly affected the post-test trait anxiety scores (F = 235.243, P < 0.001, η² = 0.805). In addition, pre-test trait anxiety scores affected post-test results (F = 34.977, P < 0.001, η² = 0.380). According to ANCOVA results, the group variable significantly affected post-test fatigue scores (F = 79.201, P < 0.001, η² = 0.582). In addition, pre-test scores affected post-test scores (F = 11.082, P = 0.002, η² = 0.163). Conclusion: We observed that music had positive effects on fatigue and anxiety levels in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. It may be recommended to include music intervention in nursing practices for cancer patients during chemotherapy. The study results demonstrated that music intervention can be used in nursing practices for cancer patients during chemotherapy. Its low-cost and non-invasive nature also provide ease of application. Objective: We evaluated the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (HP) positivity and glycemic regulation in type 2 diabetic patients. Material and Method: 315 type 2 diabetic patients admitted to Dr. Lütfi Kirdar Kartal Training and Research Hospital Internal Medicine Polyclinics were evaluated retrospectively. Fasting plasma glucose, HbAlc levels and urea breath test (UBT) results were analyzed. The relationship between HbAlc levels and UBT positivity were investigated. Results: Fasting plasma glucose was significantly higher in UBT positive patients (175.3±73.9 mgjdl) than in UBT negative patients (139.3±35.6 mg/dl) (p<0.05). HbAlc levels were also detected as significantly higher in UBT positive patients (8.0±2.1) than in the UBT negative ones (6.9±1.2) (p<0.05). Conclusion: We showed in our study that HP infection rates detected with UBT in diabetic patients are significantly higher in patients with poor glycemic control than in the ones with Light glycemic control.
