The present research aimed to quantitatively and economically evaluate Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) fruit as a non-timber forest product for a resident rural community across three consecutive years. A forest stand of 50 hectares in Kalaleh village, Northwest of Iran (Arasbaran biosphere reserve), was selected. After estimating the number of stems per hectare, the rate of fruit production rate was determined. Forty five individuals were then selected and assessed for their vegetative characteristics, including total height (m), crown height (m), crown diameter (m), diameter at breast height (mm), number of coppice shoots and annual fruit production (kg). Relationships between the vegetative characteristics and fruit production were then determined using multiple regression analysis to estimate the total fruit production per ha (estimated number of stems per hectare x mean fruit production per stem). Questionnaires and interviews were conducted to determine the number of stakeholders, quantity of fruit harvested and their harvesting methods; in addition to the costs and revenues of the harvest. Our results indicated that in 2012, 2013 and 2014, the annual total fruit production and local harvesting rates were: (i) 17 500, 10 705 and 8 169 kg and (ii) 4 900, 6 540 and 6 700 kg respectively. The revenue from selling the fruit contributed from 3.6% to 7.3% to household livelihoods. Mean economic rent of Cornelian cherry utilization and the average expected value of the forest were US$ 52.9 and US$ 17.6 respectively, while the average marketing margin of utilization was 65.5%. We believe that the inflated harvest rate recorded in 2014, which was above the allowable quota, might be a crucial threat to viability and also the sustainability of the forest stand. In conclusion, launching and implementing non-timber forest products projects including tree domestication is required to help conserving biodiversity in one hand and to sustainably manage natural resources in the other hand.

One of the most basic criteria in documenting rangeland use prospects is the recognition of byproducts and their economic appraisal. The current study was conducted to assess the economic indices of exploiting byproduct production in Shahindej, Northwest Iran. For this purpose, 24 by-product-generating species were selected in 114 locations that belong to 49 rangeland units. The total expected value of 24 by-product generating species yield and forage production was calculated at 44.22 USD ha−1. The results of this study showed that the sustainability of natural resources depends on the effective participation and empowerment of local communities. Furthermore, by-product exploitation contributes significantly to the local economy and employment while also reducing grazing intensity. Overall, the findings of this study show that by-product earnings should be considered in range management schemes and comprehensive natural-area management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetation cover is known as one of the most dominant parameters in soil erosion that can considerably affect soil erosion drivers. This study aimed to assess the effects of vegetation cover on soil conservation in Arasbaran Forests, Iran. A part of Arsbaran forests has been protected for 45 years. The other part has not been under protection during these years. This study was carried out in order to investigate the effects of forest protection management on the changes in the amount of soil erosion and compare it with the non-protection sector. To this end, 66 samples were grouped in the two selected elevation classes. Out of every three sample plots, one plot was randomly selected for collecting soil samples. Landsat 8 images and a Digital Elevation Model were utilized for sample collection via ENVI (Environment for Visualizing Images) and GIS (Geographic Information System), respectively. Then, the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was employed to estimate the annual soil loss in the studied sites. The results showed the annual soil erosion of 9.84 and 10.06 tons per hectare/year for protected and non-protected areas, respectively. Moreover, the average annual soil erosion of 9.95 tons per hectare/year was calculated for the whole Arasbaran Forests. The results of the statistical test revealed no significant difference between protected and non-protected sites in terms of erosion rates (p > 0.05). Based on the findings, despite the non-significant and slightly lower soil loss per unit area in the protected site, there is a notable soil loss throughout the entire non-protected area. It appears necessary to conduct a thorough review of existing conservation laws and to closely monitor their effective implementation. This step is crucial for enhancing the effectiveness of forest conservation management in mitigating soil erosion. The results show that absolute forest protection alone cannot make a big difference in preventing soil erosion. In this regard, there is a need to carry silviculture measures to manage protected forest stands to increase the sustainability of the forest. Ecotourism plays a critical strategic role in regional development. In many remote communities, ecotourism is the main contributing factor in their economic growth. The role of ecotourism development in the sustainability of the local economy is widely known. However, the local communities' role in the development of the industry has been neglected. The presented study, therefore, examines the importance of community engagement as the missing link in the successful development of the ecotourism industry. This research uses strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats methodology and analytic network process technique to determine the importance of the strategies directly related to the local community in comparison to other ecotourism development strategies. Arasbaran Biosphere Reserve, in northwest Iran, was used as a case study. A decision-making model containing 20 clusters, 69 sub-factors, and seven alternatives were developed in SuperDecisions software. The results showed in overall, the strategies directly related to the local community are more effective than all the other strategies. There were significant differences between the local community's point of view and local authorities on the importance of community engagement. The results also indicated lack of trust and willingness of local authorities had been the main contributions in unsuccessful community engagement programs in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our ability to forecast future Land use/cover changes (LUCC) is extremely limited due to lack of understanding of how rapid and drastic changes like socio-economic shocks and disturbances (e.g., policy changes and economic crises) affect land use/cover. Energy policies changing in Iran have been implemented since 2010. In this study, we explored whether changes in energy policies affect the sustainability of forest cover and LUCC. Results showed that in the time periods of before and after implementation of the policies, 2,841 and 3,155 ha of forests converted to other land covers, respectively. It was also revealed that forest and rangelands degradation and their conversion to croplands and built-up areas have had the most contribution to increasing area of these land covers. Calculation annual rate of deforestation showed an increase in deforestation activities after the plan (−0.40% versus −0.53%). On the other hand, the population growth in the first period was 10,074 people, which was higher than the population increase in the second period (9,803 people). Therefore, it can be argued that the effect of the energy policies is likely to be greater than the increase in population and it appears to be able to cause a transition of land systems.
