Abstract

Observing systems are the tool to study climate change when they provide the basic information to assess changes: time-series of good quality data. Marine observatories historically involved the collection of physical data as seawater temperature and salinity, but, in relative recent time, timeseries have been improved with relevant data about C fluxes and other climate related variables., e.g. nutrients, DMS or dissolved CO2, also thanks to improved technology of measurements. Parallel to data collection by moored instruments, time-series are also derived from regular hydrological survey and CTD casts. Although these CTD surveys do not have the robust time coverage of moorings, they are often replicated on a regular basis, resulting in a time-series. The marine observing system in Ny-Ålesund provides a full coverage of the major ocean variables relevant to monitor climate-related changes in Arctic sea water properties. It has been built around the permanent mooring Dirigibile Italia and has been improved with other measurements and observations. Italian moorings were first deployed at sea in September 2000 and 2001 in a site that was in the innermost part of the fjord at that time (Aliani et al., 2004). Melting of tidewater glaciers' ice tongues produced in big changes in Ny-Ålesund and the mooring Dirigibile Italia, which is the core of the present-day observing system, has been positioned close to the inner moraine. Sediment traps and new sensors were added to the traditional CT recorders and regular CTD surveys were performed within FIKO project during moorings maintenance, resulting in a large data set every year since September 2010 when the mooring was first deployed. These data after Quality Control will be delivered to the CNR Arctic Data Center and available for modelling. Taking advantage of the presence of Dirigibile Italia marine observatory, experiments have been performed in Ny-Ålesund about the microbial communities in seawater and about the technological exploitation of autonomous vehicles for measuring in extreme and very dangerous environments as the glacier's front, which successfully brought an instrumented AUV to touch Kronebreen glacier (Zappalà et al., 2016, 2017). Time-series of thermohaline properties from the mooring Dirigibile Italia (MDI) revealed a large seasonal variability (? = -1.82 / 6.26°C, S = 34 / 35) and from the beginning of the time-series an increasing trend in temperature (0.07 °C y-1) was measured showing constant minima, and progressively higher warm peaks. An average total mass flux (TMF) of about 20 g m-2 d-1, with the highest peaks recorded in summer-fall months (avg. flux, ~100 g m-2 d-1) and reduced fluxes in autumn-winters (avg. flux, ~7 g m-2 day-1). The terrestrial input due to the melting of glacier terminations generated an increase of the detritus, and the surface runoff introduced debris into the sea from the permafrost surface layer erosion (D'Angelo et al., 2018). All this variability may affect prokaryotic and phytoplanktonic biomass and microbial remineralization rates over short time scales (Azzaro et al., 2017; Caroppo et al., 2017). Nowadays, the Italian marine experimental platform has two pillars. The first is the marine observatory centered on the mooring(s) MDI which will deliver oceanographic data to IADC. The second pillar is the experimental platform that derives from the presence of the marine observatory, which is used for dedicated experiments. Together with Climate Change Tower atmospheric measurements, they are a solid and multidisciplinary approach to monitoring climate change in the Arctic.

Abstract

Since the exhalative crisis of 2002 cruises were carried out to investigate morphology, magnetic and gravity fields, fluid escape, plume anomalies, biological and microbiological activity, benthic fluxes, early diagenesis, mineralogy and geochemistry of water and sediments of the hydrothermal system of Panarea. The volcanic complex was mapped by multibeam, including backscatter analysis, and magnetometric surveys were done to detect low magnetization in areas with hydrothermal activity, i.e., vents, sulphide deposits, chimney fields. CTD by ship and on ROV detected acidic plumes at bottom (minimum pH value 6.5) and mid depths. An Automatic Benthic Chamber was deployed on a terrace (40m) and in depressions with gascharged and hydrothermally altered sediments (80m). At the 40m site, strong releases of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and Fe, Mn, Zn (75.7, 2.0, 2.9, 3.4 mmol m-2 day-1) were found. Average decrease of pH in the chamber was ~4 units day-1 with a H+ benthic flux of 0.32 mmol m-2 day-1). DIC values of seawater had average 2.3, increasing to 3.1 on degassing vents, while 7.5 mmol was measured on top of a bubbling core. ROV dives explored and sampled several sites; active chimneys (black, red crusts and yellowishorange precipitates at top) were recovered on the SE flanks of Basiluzzo; pH value of 5 was measured aboard on sediments. XRD and XRF data on the external crust showed Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides, including goethite and opal, with Co, Ce, Sr, Zn and Cu enrichments, whereas the inner part are depleted of Fe, Mn and other metals, mostly under detection limits. SEM imagery shows porous filamentous minerals, that are probably bacterial in origin. Dives to SW discovered fields of partially or totally relict chimneys at the same depth (~200m). Chimneys are present on the edges of slope failures and settled on areas of relative lower positive magnetic anomaly, indicating possible shallow depth level of hydrothermal alteration. Reddish crusts and sediments, and acid, gas boiling water (pH 5.5) were cored at 90 m depth upslope of the 'active' chimneys; upslope from the 'relict' chimney's fields, oxized-normal sediments were found. Biological investigations on the sediments revealed a community strongly dominated by the amphipod Ampelisca ledoyeri (43.8 % of the total abundance), probably dwelling in the tubepatches. Rare species were detected on the chimney's samples. The phylogenetic diversity of microbial communities in the precipitates collected on chimneys and on Bottaro vent was analyzed by bacterial and archaeal 16S rDNA clone libraries, showing a dominance of sulfur-oxidazing epsilon and gamma proteobacteria. Very interesting groups of archaea were revealed including methanotrophic Thermoplasmatales and members of SM1 candidate division. Overall prokaryotic diversity was found similar to that of deep sea hydrothermal vents and other sulfidic habitats. White microbial mats were found in an area S of Panarea, on a NS oriented fracture.

Abstract

The large-scale deep-sea biodiversity distribution of the benthic fauna was explored in the Mediterranean Sea, which can beseen as a miniature model of the oceans of the world. Within the framework of the BIOFUN project (‘‘Biodiversity andEcosystem Functioning in Contrasting Southern European Deep-sea Environments: from viruses to megafauna’’), weinvestigated the large spatial scale variability (over .1,000 km) of the bathyal macrofauna communities that inhabit theMediterranean basin, and their relationships with the environmental variables. The macrofauna abundance, biomass,community structure and functional diversity were analysed and the a-diversity and b-diversity were estimated across sixselected slope areas at different longitudes and along three main depths. The macrobenthic standing stock and a-diversitywere lower in the deep-sea sediments of the eastern Mediterranean basin, compared to the western and central basins. Themacrofaunal standing stock and diversity decreased significantly from the upper bathyal to the lower bathyal slope stations.The major changes in the community composition of the higher taxa and in the trophic (functional) structure occurred atdifferent longitudes, rather than at increasing water depth. For the b-diversity, very high dissimilarities emerged at all levels:(i) between basins; (ii) between slopes within the same basin; and (iii) between stations at different depths; this thereforedemonstrates the high macrofaunal diversity of the Mediterranean basins at large spatial scales. Overall, the food sources(i.e., quantity and quality) that characterised the west, central and eastern Mediterranean basins, as well as sediment grainsize, appear to influence the macrobenthic standing stock and the biodiversity along the different slope areas.

49. Floating debris in the Ligurian Sea, Western Mediterranean

Abstract

Results from visual sightings of large foating debris are presented,taken in the Ligurian Sea,a sub-basin of the north-western Mediterranean Sea which belongs to the recently stated ‘‘Cetacean Sanctuary’’.Data have been collected during three oceanographic cruises, during the summer of 1997 and 2000. Results for the 1997 data suggest a debris density of the order of 15 –25 objects km 2, while for the 2000 data, a lower density of the order of 3 –1.5 objects km 2 is found.The difference between the two results appears statistically significant using simple tests. Possible reasons for the observed variability are discussed,including meteorological forcing, marine currents and debris input variability.

Abstract

A comparative study for abundance, biomass and diversity was carried out for the prokaryote, meiofauna and macrofauna communities at three depth stations (1200, 1800 and 2100 m) along the Malta Escarpment (Mediterranean Sea). Our investigation showed a two-fold increase with depth in prokaryote abundance; the contribution of prokaryote biomass to the total benthic biomass was predominant at all depths. Bacteria were the dominant prokaryote component and Archaea formed a considerable fraction (20%-30%) of the prokaryote assemblages. The meio- and macrofauna abundances and meiofauna biomass did not decrease significantly with depth but macrofauna biomass did. The a diversity did not follow a clear bathymetric trend for both nematode and macrofauna species. Probably because of the large number of eurybathic nematode genera, nor did the turnover diversity in nematode composition change down the depth gradient. Conversely, for the macrofauna there was a perceptible change in community composition between the shallowest station and the two deeper stations. Food availability affected only the macrobenthic component. The increase in the prokaryote organisms with depth and the dominance of nematodes and macrofauna deposit feeders suggest active grazing by the two benthic components on microbes. This would transfer energy to the higher trophic levels through the microbial compartment.
