Our surveys yield evidence of breeding of Zygonyx torridus in the Moulouya River, of Sympetrum sinaiticum in the Oriental province, and also of Boyeria rene, which remained unrecorded for more than three decades. We confirm the occurrence of Brachythemis impartita in the study area, by providing new sightings. Our results also revealed the range expansion of several other species whereas some previously known species in the region were not found. We found a clear dominance of the Palearctic elements, mainly Mediterranean, with a high proportion of Ibero-Maghrebian endemic species. This chorotype pattern is similar to patterns observed for other macroinvertebrate groups in the same study area. This study carried out between March and August 2014, offers a monitoring of nine abiotic descriptors in 11 sampling stations chosen along Oued Melloulou, main tributary on the left bank of Oued Moulouya. The use of partial triadic analysis facilitates the monitoring of spatio-temporal variability of these physico-chemical descriptors, and highlights the evolution of their spatial structure. The obtained results showed that Oued Melloulou enjoys an average to very good quality water, and that this watercourse is spared for the moment, from large domestic and industrial pollution.

To contribute to the knowledge of Potamon algeriense bio–ecology in eastern Morocco and the Moulouya watershed, a total of 90 stations were surveyed between 2013 and 2016. Of these, only 14 stations (out of the 90 surveyed) were positive concerning the occurrence of this species, which was found to be limited to the middle and lower watercourses of the Moulouya watershed, and specifically to Oued Za, Zegzel and the lower watercourse of the sub–basin Mouth of the Moulouya. The results of the statistical analyses showed that the main factors influencing the distribution and abundance of Potamon algeriense were temperature, BOD5, and conductivity.

The aim of this study is to investigate the longitudinal zonation of macroinvertebrates assemblages in the Za River basin, the main tributary of Moulouya River (Morocco). This work carried out in three campaigns between March and August 2014 on 12 stations selected. This study allowed the identification of 137 species classified in 109 genera and 65 families. In addition to the physicochemical parameters measured three times in each station, a description of the aquatic environment was made to characterize each of the stations surveyed; in particular with regard to altitude, slope, Emberger quotient, thermal amplitude, kilometers at the source, current velocity and bioclimatic zones. The treatment of this benthic population as well as the stations environmental descriptors, using Foucart' factorial correspondence analysis (FCA) and partial triadic analysis (PTA) respectively, allowed for the development of a typology of this watercourse, where altitude and current speed seem to play a major role in the distribution of benthic invertebrates. The biocenotic study revealed the presence of three stationary groupings corresponding to four faunal groups.

Melloulou River, which is located in Middle Atlas of Morocco, is a good example of a very wet and poorly known basin, and therefore of special conservation concern. The aim of this study was to draw up an initial inventory of the benthic macroinvertebrates taxa, and to analyze its longitudinal distribution in the basin, particularly searching for the main abiotic factors addressing its zonation for improving future management and conservation actions. The study allowed identifying 161 taxa belonging to 127 genera and 80 families, most new records for northeast Morocco. The biotypology, which was studied by using Foucart' Factorial Correspondence Analysis (FCA), Partial Triadic analysis (PTA), and IndVal showed a longitudinal distribution of macroinvertebrates mainly governed by altitude, slope and current velocity. The studied biota revealed the presence of three assemblages and an important number of ubiquitous species not included in any group. The first group is located in the upper courses of Melloulou River representing a community proper of a crenon-rhithron zone; the second occurs in the middle and lower courses, and clearly reflects the community of a large potamon; the third one is a mixture of taxa capable to colonize the entire study area. Our finding, highlight the singular aquatic biodiversity occurring in the Melloulou River and its extraordinary changing water dynamic over time, which are key factors for future monitoring, as well as managing and conservation actions.

New faunistic and distributional data on aquatic Hemiptera from the Oriental Region of Morocco and the Moulouya River basin, covering an area of 119,268 km2, are presented. An annotated list of 45 species, 21 genera and 11 families is provided. Nine species are new records for the entire studied area, and two for the Moulouya River basin. We rediscovered Velia noualhieri iberica and Notonecta viridis after eight decades. We also provide novel records for Aphelocheirus pemae and Hebrus atlas, which were recently described from Morocco, and for the invasive corixid Trichocorixa verticalis verticalis. The dominance of species with broad distributions points to the high dispersal dynamics of the Hemiptera community in the study area, similar to that of other areas where a semiarid climate prevails.

In developed countries the longitudinal ecological pattern of large rivers is often strongly influenced by water pollution and flow regulation. The relationship between macroinvertebrate communities and this anthropogenic environment was studied along the French Rhone River. Collected specimens were identified to both family and species level and the results compared. Along the 512 km of this 7th-8th-order river, 10 reaches were chosen for study. Macroinvertebrates were collected 3 times during spring and summer 1991, using 2 techniques, artificial substrates and hand nets Environmental variables (16) were measured and associated with the collected faunistic communities, composed of 73 species or 53 families, depending on the level of identification. The faunistic and environmental structures were compared by means of a co-inertia analysis carried out on the 2 matrices. For the environmental variables and for both families and species, the longitudinal changes were preponderant. The correlation between fa...

The present work fits in the framework of a survey of the impact of domestic discharges from the city of Taourirt on the physicochemical and biological quality of the running waters of the Za wadi, which is a permanent tributary of the Moulouya River. The domestic releases do not receive any treatment before their discharge. The study was carried out at three stations: a reference station upstream from the discharge point and the two downstream stations. The quantitative collection of the macroinvertebrates was performed with a Surber net (0.4 mm aperture mesh) that allowed sampling of a reduced surface area of 0.025 m2. The inventory of the benthic fauna revealed a taxonomic diversity of 47 families and 64 taxa harvested in the quantitative samples. The spatiotemporal monitoring of several physicochemical and biological variables provided evidence of a relatively intense pollution. This pollution resulted in an important inorganic and organic load to the wadi downstream from the discharge point. This load decreased downstream as a result of the degradation of part of the organic load, due to the action of heterotrophic micro-organisms, and as a result of sedimentation, dilution and natural self-purification phenomena. Use of various metrics and biotic indices (e.g., Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) score, Average Score Per Taxa (ASPT), Shannon-Wiever Diversity Index (H), Biotic Index (IB), taxonomic richness and equitability) differentiated the reference site (Bridge of Taourirt) from the slightly affected (Ouled Lefkir) and deteriorated (Principal Discharge) sites. These biotic indices decrease with increased degradation of water quality. On the other hand, the Simpson index (D) and the Modified Hilsenhoff Biotic Index (mHBI) increase in poor water quality. The organization of the communities at the different sampling sites appeared to be closely linked to the environmental conditions: hydrological mode, chemical characteristics and riparian vegetation controlled the taxonomic richness and abundance of the macroinvertebrates.
