Abstract

Sub-Saharan Africa is under-represented in global biodiversity datasets, particularly regarding the impact of land use on species population abundances. Drawing on recent advances in expert elicitation to ensure data consistency, 200 experts were convened using a modified-Delphi process to estimate intactness scores: the remaining proportion of an intact reference population of a species group in a particular land use, on a scale from 0 (no remaining individuals) to 1 (same abundance as the reference) and, in rare cases, to 2 (populations that thrive in human-modified landscapes). The resulting bii4africa dataset contains intactness scores representing terrestrial vertebrates (tetrapods: ±5,400 amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and vascular plants (±45,000 forbs, graminoids, trees, shrubs) in sub-Saharan Africa across the regions major land uses (urban, cropland, rangeland, plantation, protected, etc.) and intensities (e.g., large-scale vs smallholder cropland). This dataset was co-produced as part of the Biodiversity Intactness Index for Africa Project. Additional uses include assessing ecosystem condition; rectifying geographic/taxonomic biases in global biodiversity indicators and maps; and informing the Red List of Ecosystems.

Abstract

AimMacroecological studies that require habitat suitability data for many species often derive this information from expert opinion. However, expert-based information is inherently subjective and thus prone to errors. The increasing availability of GPS tracking data offers opportunities to evaluate and supplement expert-based information with detailed empirical evidence. Here, we compared expert-based habitat suitability information from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with habitat suitability information derived from GPS-tracking data of 1,498 individuals from 49 mammal species.LocationWorldwide.Time period1998-2021.Major taxa studiedForty-nine terrestrial mammal species.MethodsUsing GPS data, we estimated two measures of habitat suitability for each individual animal: proportional habitat use (proportion of GPS locations within a habitat type), and selection ratio (habitat use relative to its availability). For each individual we then evaluated whether the GPS-based habitat suitability measures were in agreement with the IUCN data. To that end, we calculated the probability that the ranking of empirical habitat suitability measures was in agreement with IUCN's classification into suitable, marginal and unsuitable habitat types.ResultsIUCN habitat suitability data were in accordance with the GPS data (> 95% probability of agreement) for 33 out of 49 species based on proportional habitat use estimates and for 25 out of 49 species based on selection ratios. In addition, 37 and 34 species had a > 50% probability of agreement based on proportional habitat use and selection ratios, respectively.Main conclusionsWe show how GPS-tracking data can be used to evaluate IUCN habitat suitability data. Our findings indicate that for the majority of species included in this study, it is appropriate to use IUCN habitat suitability data in macroecological studies. Furthermore, we show that GPS-tracking data can be used to identify and prioritize species and habitat types for re-evaluation of IUCN habitat suitability data.

Abstract

Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets) have demonstrated impressive capabilities in image classification; however, the manual creation of these models is a labor-intensive and time-consuming endeavor due to their inherent complexity. This research introduces an innovative approach to Convolutional Neural Network (ConvNet) architecture generation through the utilization of the Symbiotic Organism Search ConvNet (SOS_ConvNet) algorithm. Leveraging the Symbiotic Organism Search optimization technique, SOS_ConvNet evolves ConvNet architectures tailored for diverse image classification tasks. The algorithm's distinctive feature lies in its ability to perform non-numeric computations, rendering it adaptable to intricate deep learning problems. To assess the effectiveness of SOS_ConvNet, experiments were conducted on diverse datasets, including MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, CIFAR-10, and the Breast Cancer dataset. Comparative analysis against existing models showcased the superior performance of SOS_ConvNet in terms of accuracy, error rate, and parameter efficiency. Notably, on the MNIST dataset, SOS_ConvNet achieved an impressive 0.31 % error rate, while on Fashion-MNIST, it demonstrated a competitive 6.7 % error rate, coupled with unparalleled parameter efficiency of 0.24 million parameters. The model excelled on CIFAR-10 and BreakHis datasets, yielding accuracies of 82.78 % and 89.12 %, respectively. Remarkably, the algorithm achieves remarkable accuracy while maintaining moderate model size.

4. A spiking neural algorithm for the Network Flow problem

Abstract

It is currently not clear what the potential is of neuromorphic hardware beyond machine learning and neuroscience. In this project, a problem is investigated that is inherently difficult to fully implement in neuromorphic hardware by introducing a new machine model in which a conventional Turing machine and neuromorphic oracle work together to solve such types of problems. We show that the P-complete Max Network Flow problem is intractable in models where the oracle may be consulted only once (`create-and-run' model) but becomes tractable using an interactive (`neuromorphic co-processor') model of computation. More in specific we show that a logspace-constrained Turing machine with access to an interactive neuromorphic oracle with linear space, time, and energy constraints can solve Max Network Flow. A modified variant of this algorithm is implemented on the Intel Loihi chip; a neuromorphic manycore processor developed by Intel Labs. We show that by off-loading the search for augmenting paths to the neuromorphic processor we can get energy efficiency gains, while not sacrificing runtime resources. Abstract

Accurately quantifying species' area requirements is a prerequisite for effective area-based conservation. This typically involves collecting tracking data on species of interest and then conducting home-range analyses. Problematically, autocorrelation in tracking data can result in space needs being severely underestimated. Based on the previous work, we hypothesized the magnitude of underestimation varies with body mass, a relationship that could have serious conservation implications. To evaluate this hypothesis for terrestrial mammals, we estimated home-range areas with global positioning system (GPS) locations from 757 individuals across 61 globally distributed mammalian species with body masses ranging from 0.4 to 4000 kg. We then applied block cross-validation to quantify bias in empirical home-range estimates. Area requirements of mammals 1, meaning the scaling of the relationship changed substantially at the upper end of the mass spectrum.

Abstract

Sub-Saharan Africa is under-represented in global biodiversity datasets, particularly regarding the impact of land use on species’ population abundances. Drawing on recent advances in expert elicitation to ensure data consistency, 200 experts were convened using a modified-Delphi process to estimate ‘intactness scores’: the remaining proportion of an ‘intact’ reference population of a species group in a particular land use, on a scale from 0 (no remaining individuals) to 1 (same abundance as the reference) and, in rare cases, to 2 (populations that thrive in human-modified landscapes). The resulting bii4africa dataset contains intactness scores representing terrestrial vertebrates (tetrapods: ±5,400 amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and vascular plants (±45,000 forbs, graminoids, trees, shrubs) in sub-Saharan Africa across the region’s major land uses (urban, cropland, rangeland, plantation, protected, etc.) and intensities (e.g., large-scale vs smallholder cropland). This dataset was co-produced as part of the Biodiversity Intactness Index for Africa Project. Additional uses include assessing ecosystem condition; rectifying geographic/taxonomic biases in global biodiversity indicators and maps; and informing the Red List of Ecosystems.

Abstract

The degree of knowledge and understanding of construction stakeholders, particularly pro-ject managers, about the environmental impacts of construction processes has to be improved because construction is one of the major causes of environmental pollution worldwide. This study aims to assess the most common environmental impacts of the DahabTower building project in Mogadishu. To achieve this objective, this study’s evaluation of the project’s impact has used a checklist matrix. Environmental risks were discovered to be present in the project, including waste generation (municipal, construction, and demolition wastes); changes in the characteristics of the soil; and the emission of air pollutants, among others. These risks are similar to those that are present in the majority of infrastructure and construction projects. Through the suggested mitigation strategies, these risks may be effectively controlled and monitored through preferred mitigation steps.

Abstract

Government expenditures possess the potential to exert either a favorable or detrimental influence on an economy. Augmentations in public investment yield augmented yields, enhancing the output and employment status of any nation and propelling economic expansion. The study conducts an in-depth investigation into the intricate relationship between government spending, public investment, and their impact on economic growth. It offers a nuanced understanding of this complex interplay by drawing on economic theories, empirical studies, and real-world examples. The study employs robust econometric methods, specifically the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression, to investigate the impact of public investment and domestic investment on GDP growth. The results reveal a strong and positive relationship between both public investment and domestic investment with economic growth. Specifically, a one percent increase in domestic investment correlates with a substantial 53.1 percent increase in GDP, emphasizing the significance of private sector investments. Similarly, a one percent increase in public investment results in a notable 23.3 percent GDP increase, highlighting the role of government-led initiatives, particularly infrastructure projects, in promoting economic growth. These findings validate the importance of a balanced approach that leverages both public and private investments for sustainable economic growth. The study underscores the importance of balancing public and private investments for economic growth while emphasizing the need for tailored policies that consider specific contextual factors in emerging economies like Somalia.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between agriculture and economic growth in Somalia over the period from 1980 to 2020. The research objectives encompassed describing the role of agriculture employment, agriculture exports, and crop production in contributing to economic development during the specified time frame. To achieve these objectives, the study employed the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, a form of regression analysis that utilizes historical data to identify relationships between variables. The dependent variable chosen to represent economic development was the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while the independent variables included the agriculture employment rate, agriculture exports, and crop production. Data analysis was performed using E-views software, and descriptive statistics and graphical representations were utilized to present the findings effectively. Secondary data were sourced from reputable institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) for the extensive period from 1980 to 2020. The results revealed a positive relationship between the agricultural sector and Somalia's GDP, indicating that an increase in agricultural activities positively impacted the country's economic growth. These findings highlight the significance of agriculture as a driving force behind economic development in Somalia during the examined period. As such, policymakers and stakeholders should consider investing in and promoting the agriculture sector to foster sustainable economic growth in the country.

In response, fiscal policy has taken center stage as the primary means of economic management by the government. This study aims to investigate the asymmetric impact of fiscal policy on Somalia's economic growth, utilizing annual time series data spanning from 1970 to 2019 and employing the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model. The results indicated the existence of cointegration among the variables. In the long run, both increases and decreases in government expenditure exhibited a significant positive effect on economic growth, with a more pronounced impact observed for decreases in public expenditure compared to increases in government spending. Furthermore, in the short run, both increases and decreases in government expenditure had a significant positive effect on economic growth, although an increase in government spending showed a stronger impact on economic growth compared to a decrease in government expenditure. Notably, the study surpassed various diagnostic tests, ensuring the robustness of the findings. Based on these results, we recommend that policymakers prioritize fiscal policy, particularly public spending, as a crucial channel for fostering economic growth. Additionally, directing public spending towards productive sectors of the economy and promoting fiscal transparency are suggested as means to achieve fiscal policy objectives effectively. Public Interest Statement: Somalia faces a persistent challenge of high dollarization, rendering conventional monetary policy tools ineffective. In response, fiscal policy has become the primary tool for economic management. The asymmetric impact of fiscal policy on economic growth in Somalia remains an underexplored area in the literature, particularly in the context of a least developed country. The research takes the initiative to investigate and understand the asymmetric impact of fiscal policy on Somalia's economic growth. By utilizing the NARDL model, it aims to provide policymakers with nuanced insights into the specific dynamics of fiscal policy in Somalia. The study evaluates both expansionary and contractionary fiscal policies to offer comprehensive recommendations for effective economic development in this unique and complex environment. Policymakers in Somalia benefit from tailored strategies derived from the study, enabling them to navigate the economic challenges effectively. Researchers and economists gain valuable insights into the asymmetric effects of fiscal policy in a least developed country, contributing to the broader understanding of economic dynamics. The government of Somalia can use the research findings to enhance the design and implementation of fiscal policies, particularly in the allocation of public spending, fostering more effective economic growth. The general population in Somalia stands to benefit from improved economic conditions resulting from more targeted and efficient fiscal policies. This may lead to increased employment opportunities and better living standards. Abstract

The agricultural sector seems to be overshadowed by the services sector in the globalizing world, but it still maintains its importance. Because agricultural products will continue to meet the basic needs of countries in the future as they do today. The most important problem faced by the sector, which is so important, is that it is overly affected by climatic conditions and the low income of the farmers operating in this field. Because of these features, agriculture has been a sector supported by various tools. The aim of this study is to reveal the evaluation of Turkey's agricultural support policies in terms of world trends implemented the world and to make necessary inferences by evaluating Turkey's agricultural support policies in terms of world trends in this context. For this purpose, agricultural support policy trends of the EU and USA were examined in this study. The main material of this study consisted of previous studies on the subject and material obtained from the web pages of the relevant institutes. The study was carried out as a compilation of studies containing analyzes and thoughts about the current situation and future of agricultural support policy trends in line with the determined purpose. Of the observed countries, only the United States has a positive CSE, that meaning its consumers are not taxed. On the other hand, Turkey recorded the highest negative CSE values in the observed period, which means that Turkish consumers are taxed the most.

Abstract

The degree of knowledge and understanding of construction stakeholders, particularly pro-ject managers, about the environmental impacts of construction processes has to be improved because construction is one of the major causes of environmental pollution worldwide. This study aims to assess the most common environmental impacts of the DahabTower building project in Mogadishu. To achieve this objective, this study’s evaluation of the project’s impact has used a checklist matrix. Environmental risks were discovered to be present in the project, including waste generation (municipal, construction, and demolition wastes); changes in the characteristics of the soil; and the emission of air pollutants, among others. These risks are similar to those that are present in the majority of infrastructure and construction projects. Through the suggested mitigation strategies, these risks may be effectively controlled and monitored through preferred mitigation steps.

Departamento de Medio Ambiente y Agronomía​, Restoration of degraded drylands is urgently needed to mitigate climate change, reverse desertification and secure livelihoods for the two billion people who live in these areas. Bold global targets have been set for dryland restoration to restore millions of hectares of degraded land. These targets have been questioned as overly ambitious, but without a global evaluation of successes and failures it is impossible to gauge feasibility. Here we examine restoration seeding outcomes across 174 sites on six continents, encompassing 594,065 observations of 671 plant species. Our findings suggest reasons for optimism. Seeding had a positive impact on species presence: in almost a third of all treatments, 100% of species seeded were growing at first monitoring. However, dryland restoration is risky: 17% of projects failed, with no establishment of any seeded species, and consistent declines were found in seeded species as projects matured. Across projects, higher seeding rates and larger seed sizes resulted in a greater probability of recruitment, with further influences on species success including site aridity, taxonomic identity and species life form. Our findings suggest that investigations examining these predictive factors will yield more effective and informed restoration decision-making., We would like to thank the supporters of the Global Arid Zone Project. Abstract

This study investigated whether undergraduate students' cognitive experiences of using digital devices influenced their behaviour towards the conduct of e-assessment in Nigerian universities. It also examined if students' experiences of digital space in various ways using different platforms significantly influences their behaviour towards the conduct of e-assessment in Nigerian universities. The investigation was for the purpose of improving the assessment process and removing barriers that impede digital assessment in Nigerian universities. Ex-post-facto research design was adopted in the study. The sample consisted of an intact class of 280 Part 3 undergraduate students selected from a public university in Jigawa state during the 2020/2021 academic session. A self-developed instrument tagged: "Digital Learning and Assessment Questionnaire (DLAQ)", was used to collect data. Data were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Chi-Square (χ²) statistics. Also, percentile analysis was done using simple percentage statistical method. The results revealed that students' digital experiences significantly influenced their behaviour towards the conduct of e-assessment in Nigerian universities. Also, students' digital experiences significantly influenced their perceived efficiency of e-assessment delivery in Nigerian universities. Further, students' experiences of digital space in various ways using different platforms significantly influenced their behaviour towards the conduct of e-assessment in Nigerian universities. It was concluded that the need for fair assessment of undergraduate students becomes imperative through digital devices. Thus, the heterogeneity of student digital experiences raises some key considerations for Nigerian universities to rethink practices and to adopt diversified approaches to assess and examine their students. Trade of agricultural products has gained importance with the development of global trade. Cherries has a crucial place in Turkish agricultural exports. Fresh cherries are in the scope of this study. The aim of this study is to examine Turkey’s position and competitiveness in cherry trade. Trade Intensity Analysis Method which represents the course of trade flow among countries is used in the study. The study indicates that European countries which are Turkey’s tradition trade partner has a biggest trade share with Turkey and that share did not much change in years. By the way, Asia market especially China, became a game changer in cherry trade and Turkey should prepare itself for this situation.

Abstract

A participatory processing diagnosis on fried sweetpotato was conducted with expert fryers to better understand desirable and non-desirable quality characteristics from their perspective. The study encompassed 20 expert fryers across 8 communities in Nigeria (Kano and Kwara States) and Ghana (Bawku, Upper East Region). In both countries, the desirable characteristics of raw sweetpotato for use in the frying operation included; smooth skin, regular shape, big root size, no holes, no off-odours and firmness. The main unit operations involved in preparation were five namely; peeling, slicing, washing, salting and deep frying. Deep frying was the most important unit operation determining the quality of fried sweetpotato product (involved pre-heating vegetable oil 120-185°C). During processing important attributes included; hard when slicing, non-sticky and non-slippery in the hands, uniform colour of slices, non or slight surface moisture and no off-odours. The fried sweetpotato desirable traits were; colour (uniform light brown or yellow/golden, orange with a brown tint), dry/filling/satisfying, hard/strong -at first bite, crispy, not soggy, not oily, and slight-moderately sugary. Preference of the varieties from most to least preferred by processors in Ghana was; Obare, Purupuru, Kuffour and Amuskwera with weighted scores of 32, 21, 16 and 11 respectively. In Nigeria, processors in Kwara State liked Alausa (32) most followed by Pakurumo (21), Tomude (18), Aragbe (12), Mother's Delight (9) and Elege (6) while for those in Kano state it was; Dan Izala (36), Dan China (24), Dan Bakalori (18), Dan Madagali (14), Dan Barmawa (8), Dan Silver (6) and Mother's Delight (6).

Abstract

Aim: Macroecological studies that require habitat suitability data for many species often derive this information from expert opinion. However, expert-based information is inherently subjective and thus prone to errors. The increasing availability of GPS tracking data offers opportunities to evaluate and supplement expert-based information with detailed empirical evidence. Here, we compared expert-based habitat suitability information from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with habitat suitability information derived from GPS-tracking data of 1,498 individuals from 49 mammal species. Location: Worldwide. Time period: 1998-2021. Major taxa studied: Forty-nine terrestrial mammal species. Methods: Using GPS data, we estimated two measures of habitat suitability for each individual animal: proportional habitat use (proportion of GPS locations within a habitat type), and selection ratio (habitat use relative to its availability). For each individual we then evaluated whether the GPS-based habitat suitability measures were in agreement with the IUCN data. To that end, we calculated the probability that the ranking of empirical habitat suitability measures was in agreement with IUCN's classification into suitable, marginal and unsuitable habitat types. Results: IUCN habitat suitability data were in accordance with the GPS data (> 95% probability of agreement) for 33 out of 49 species based on proportional habitat use estimates and for 25 out of 49 species based on selection ratios. In addition, 37 and 34 species had a > 50% probability of agreement based on proportional habitat use and selection ratios, respectively. Main conclusions: We show how GPS-tracking data can be used to evaluate IUCN habitat suitability data. Our findings indicate that for the majority of species included in this study, it is appropriate to use IUCN habitat suitability data in macroecological studies.
