Abstract

Lakes around the world, including Ghana's Lake Volta, are facing insidious threats from pollutants due to high dependency on aquatic ecosystems. Cage aquaculture is expanding across Africa because of its potential to address food insecurity, provide livelihoods, and boost local economies. However, the uncontrolled expansion of cage aquaculture can have significant negative impacts on water resources, including environmental footprints that threaten biodiversity. Given the intensification of cage aquaculture for tilapia farming on Lake Volta, we advocate for a transition to inland-integrated aquaculture systems that promote circularity. Strengthening stakeholder collaboration is essential for enhancing competence in mapping inland aquaculture areas, identifying eco-friendly alternatives and reinforcing aquaculture regulations, with particular emphasis on cage culture on Lake Volta. These strategies can reduce the pressures imposed by tilapia cage farms on the lake while promoting best management practices. Additionally, capacity building must be an ongoing process to address knowledge gaps, including the development of effective preparedness plans executed during emergencies. The ongoing pollution from illegal mining in the Black Volta River, a tributary of Lake Volta, along with endemic diseases in the lake, further compounds fish health and welfare issues. This underscores the urgent need to implement inland transition strategies to protect the lake, mitigate disease spread, and ensure safe fish food production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: The intestine plays an important role in mediating between the bird and its nutritional environment. The yolk stalk, also known as Meckel's diverticulum, is a landmark between the jejunum and ileum. This work aimed to investigate the anatomical, histological, and electron microscopical features of cellular components of the Meckel's diverticulum (MD) in adult geese. Methods: The intestine was dissected from the bird's body cavity, and Meckel's diverticulum was exposed and prepared for light and electron microscopical examinations. Results: Our results revealed that the MD mucosa is thrown up into villi and crypts, and the mucosal epithelium is a columnar epithelium with goblet cells as well as intraepithelial lymphocytes. Lymphoid follicles and numerous immune cells were demonstrated within the lamina propria. The mucous glands were also observed within the lamina propria and among the lymphoid follicles. The lining epithelium of MD appeared with different staining affinities: dark cells (electron-dense) and light cells (electron-lucent) contained few mitochondria and more secretory vesicles, while dark cells contained more mitochondria and fewer secretory vesicles. Immunohistochemical analysis of MD revealed positive immunoreactivity for several markers, such as CD117, chromogranin, PLCβ, cytokeratin, MHC II, and S100. Abstract

The electrical system performance can be improved considerably by controlling the reactive power flow in the system. The reactive power control can be achieved by optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem solution and optimal integration of the FACTS devices. With high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) and the load growth, the ORPD solution became a challenging and a complex task due to the stochastic nature of the RERs and the load growth. In this regard, the aim of this paper is to solve the stochastic optimal reactive power dispatch (SORPD) with optimal inclusion of PV units, wind turbines and the unified power flow controller (UPFC) under uncertainties of the load growth and the generated powers. An Adaptive Beluga Whale Optimization (ABWO) is proposed for solving the SORPD which is based on the Fitness-Distance Balance Selection (FDBS) strategy and the territorial solitary males' strategy of the Mountain Gazelle Optimizer. The proposed ABWO is tested on IEEE 30-bus system and a comparison with other optimization techniques for solving the ordinary ORPD is presented for validating the proposed ABWO. The obtained results reveal that the TEPL is reduced from 5.3168 MW to 3.97985 MW with optimal integration of the RERs and UPFC. Likewise, the TEVD is reduced from 0.1794p.u. to 0.10689p.u. and the TVSI is decreased from 0.1289p.u. to 0.0476p.u.
