This article investigated the complex interplay of choice, socioeconomic structural factors, and empowerment influencing engagement in sex work. The analysis was focused on pathways into and reasons for staying in sex work from in-depth qualitative interviews with participants (n = 37) recruited from the Durbar community-led structural intervention in Kolkata, India. Kabeer's theory of empowerment focused on resources, agency, and achievements was utilized to interpret the results. Results identified that contexts of disempowerment constraining resources and agency set the stage for initiating sex work, typically due to familial poverty, loss of a father or husband as a breadwinner, and lack of economic opportunities for women in India. Labor force participation in informal sectors was common, specifically in domestic, construction, and manufacturing work, but was typically insufficient to provide for families and also often contingent on sexual favors. The availability of an urban market for sex work served as a catalyst or resource, in conjunction with Durbar's programmatic resources, for women to find and exercise agency and achieve financial and personal autonomy not possible in other work or as dependents on male partners. Resources lost in becoming a sex worker due to stigma, discrimination, and rejection by family and communities were compensated for by achievements in gaining financial and social resources, personal autonomy and independence, and the ability to support children and extended family. Durbar's programs and activities (e.g., savings and lending cooperative, community mobilization, advocacy) function as empowering resources that are tightly linked to sex workers' agency, achievements, and sex work pathways.

Anaemia is a major public health concern in developing countries, particularly among children, adolescents, and women of reproductive age. The study aimed to assess the anaemia status among adolescent girls, pregnant, and lactating women with their contributing factors in the southern rural regions of Bangladesh. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 adolescent girls, 375 pregnant, and 375 lactating women using a multistage cluster-random sampling technique. Anaemia was measured through haemoglobin concentration in blood capillaries collected with a Hemocue 301 machine. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with anaemia. The average age of pregnant and lactating women was 24 years and 15.2 years for girls. Overall, the prevalence of anaemia was 50% among pregnant women, 46% among lactating women, and 38% among adolescent girls. The risk of anaemia among adolescent girls was higher among non-Muslim (aOR = 2.13, 95%CI:1.05–4.31), belonged to families having >5 members (aOR = 2.24, 95%CI:1.16–4.31) while exposure to media reduced their risk (aOR = 0.33, 95%CI:0.15–0.74). Pregnant women who consumed a diversified diet, washed their hands after toilet, and received ≥4 ANC visits had a lower likelihood of developing anaemia. Lactating women who were employed, consumed a diversified diet, washed their hands before preparing food, and after toilet, had been exposed to media, received ≥4 ANC visits, and consumed ≥90 IFA, had a lower risk of developing anaemia. However, anaemia was more likely to be associated with lactating women who were non-Muslim (aOR = 3.75; 95%CI:1.26–11.22). The high prevalence of anaemia emphasizes the need to reconsider the existing strategy for the prevention and control of micronutrient deficiencies in Bangladesh. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Students of color (SOC) face multiple barriers to being admitted and retained in social work doctoral programs. We describe these hurdles and propose approaches to circumvent them. Admission challenges include a lack of guidance, financial hurdles, underpreparedness, and racism directed at applicants. Retention challenges include a dearth of mentorship, financial hardship, lack of academic support, and discrimination experienced by students. We propose institutional and structural responses to these challenges. Programs should recruit from milieus marked by diversity, de-emphasize standardized scores and blind reviews in admissions, increase faculty of color numbers, establish crosscutting mentorship networks, and expand academic and financial support. At the structural level, teaching credentials for core classes should be reconsidered, research and publication reimagined, and community engagement emphasized. Finally, moves like the replacement of tenured with adjunct faculty and the initiation of doctorate in social work programs should be examined for their implications to the career prospects of SOC.

Bioremediation, a process that utilizes the capability of microorganism to degrade toxic waste, is emerging as a promising technology for the treatment of soil and groundwater contamination. The technology is very effective in dealing with petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. The aim of this study was to examine the composition of the microbial consortium during the ex situ experiment of bioremediation of soil heavily contaminated with crude oil and its products from the Oil Refinery Pančevo, Serbia. After a 5.5-month experiment with biostimulation and bioventilation, the concentration of the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) had been reduced from 29.80 to 3.29 g/kg (89 %). In soil, the dominant microorganism population comprised Gram-positive bacteria from actinomycete-Nocardia group. The microorganisms which decompose hydrocarbons were the dominant microbial population at the end of the process, with a share of more than 80 % (range 107 CFU/g). On the basis of the results, it was concluded that a stable microbial community had been formed after initial fluctuations.

Community-engaged and participatory methods are increasingly used by academic researchers. Power dynamics in academia shape the landscape in which researchers implement these methods, yet are rarely understood and intentionally addressed. Through the lens of social work researchers at different career stages, this article describes how power relations within academia present challenges to community-engaged and participatory research across four stages of the research process (participant/researcher relationship, study formulation, conducting research, and publication/dissemination). These challenges are located within four domains of power identified by intersectionality scholars: Institutional policies such as those for tenure and promotion and for research administration presented challenges with the structural domain. Decisions about how to implement and enforce policies and operationalize what counts for tenure and promotion were identified as challenges within the disciplinary domain. Norms about who belongs on a university campus and what types of research are valued exemplified the cultural domain, while dynamics about who is viewed as an expert exemplified challenges the interpersonal domain. Across the research process, the article identifies potential solutions and suggests strategies for intentional consideration by academic researchers and their institutions to conduct meaningful, inclusive, and socially just research that shares power with community. Among people living with HIV, trauma is associated with increased viral loads and obstructed access to HIV care. Trauma-Informed Care (TIC), a SAMHSA Evidence Based Practice, responds to the impact of trauma for service users by focusing on all aspects of service delivery systems and structures. TIC could be potentially lifesaving in regions where HIV rates continue to rise, like the U.S. South. Thus, the purpose of this study is to (1) understand the extent to which HIV service organizations in the U.S. South provide mental health and substance use services and referrals; (2) the extent to which they employ trauma informed care and (3) the barriers of employing trauma informed care. Analyzing quantitative data of 207 organizations, we found that less than a third of organizations provided a trauma informed intervention. Only 44% of organizations had participated in TIC training but 84% expressed interest in TIC training. Organizations who completed TIC training were 10 times more likely than those who did not to report that they implemented at least one trauma informed care strategies. Barriers to TIC implementation included lack of training, capacity, and resources. Building the capacity of organizations to implement TIC will be a key to ending the HIV epidemic.
