Geophysical and geological data from the North Mozambique Channel acquired during the 2020–2021 SISMAORE oceanographic cruise reveal a corridor of recent volcanic and tectonic features 200 km wide and 600 km long within and north of Comoros Archipelago. Here we identify and describe two major submarine tectono-volcanic fields: the N’Droundé province oriented N160°E north of Grande-Comore Island, and the Mwezi province oriented N130°E north of Anjouan and Mayotte Islands. The presence of popping basaltic rocks sampled in the Mwezi province suggests post-Pleistocene volcanic activity. The geometry and distribution of recent structures observed on the seafloor are consistent with a current regional dextral transtensional context. Their orientations change progressively from west to east (${\sim }$N160°E, ${\sim }$N130°E, ${\sim }$EW). The volcanism in the western part appears to be influenced by the pre-existing structural fabric of the Mesozoic crust. The 200 km-wide and 600 km-long tectono-volcanic corridor underlines the incipient Somalia–Lwandle dextral lithospheric plate boundary between the East-African Rift System and Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Copper (Cu), an essential trace mineral regulating multiple actions of inflammation and oxidative stress, has been implicated in risk for preterm birth (PTB). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the association of maternal Cu concentration during pregnancy with PTB risk and gestational duration in a large multicohort study including diverse populations. METHODS: Maternal plasma or serum samples of 10,449 singleton live births were obtained from 18 geographically diverse study cohorts. Maternal Cu concentrations were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The associations of maternal Cu with PTB and gestational duration were analyzed using logistic and linear regressions for each cohort. The estimates were then combined using meta-analysis. Associations between maternal Cu and acute-phase reactants (APRs) and infection status were analyzed in 1239 samples from the Malawi cohort. RESULTS: The maternal prenatal Cu concentration in our study samples followed normal distribution with mean of 1.92 μg/mL and standard deviation of 0.43 μg/mL, and Cu concentrations increased with gestational age up to 20 wk. The random-effect meta-analysis across 18 cohorts revealed that 1 μg/mL increase in maternal Cu concentration was associated with higher risk of PTB with odds ratio of 1.30 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08, 1.57) and shorter gestational duration of 1.64 d (95% CI: 0.56, 2.73). In the Malawi cohort, higher maternal Cu concentration, concentrations of multiple APRs, and infections (malaria and HIV) were correlated and associated with greater risk of PTB and shorter gestational duration. CONCLUSIONS: Our study supports robust negative association between maternal Cu and gestational duration and positive association with risk for PTB. Cu concentration was strongly correlated with APRs and infection status suggesting its potential role in inflammation, a pathway implicated in the mechanisms of PTB. Therefore, maternal Cu could be used as potential marker of integrated inflammatory pathways during pregnancy and risk for PTB.

BackgroundDespite existing policies promoting companionship, it remains uncommon in Tanzania. Pregnant women select a trusted individual to accompany them during childbirth, providing emotional, physical, and spiritual support. The World Health Organization recommends birth companionship as integral to intrapartum care for positive maternal and fetal outcomes.ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the experiences of pregnant women and healthcare providers regarding childbirth companionship at a tertiary health facility in Tanzania.MethodsParticipants were purposefully selected for qualitative exploratory interviews. Focused group discussions were conducted with pregnant women attending antenatal clinics, and in-depth interviews were held with healthcare providers at Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital in Tanzania. Braun and Clarke's six-step thematic analysis approach was used to analyze the data.ResultsThree major themes emerged: "Bonding and Learning with Spouse/Partner," "Assurance of Maternal Safety," and "Fear of Blame and Breach of Confidentiality." These themes highlight a strong desire among both pregnant women and healthcare providers for companionship during labor, particularly from male partners. Emotional support and safety were cited as key reasons. Fear, however, was identified as a major obstacle, with providers concerned about potential exposure of mistakes and pregnant women fearing a violation of their privacy rights regarding health matters.ConclusionPregnant women expressed a strong desire for companionship throughout labor. However, companionship faced challenges due to staff shortages and inadequate privacy in labor wards. There is a pressing need to enhance childbirth companionship practices and policies in low-resource settings.

Conservation scientists continue to debate the strengths and weaknesses of REDD+ as an instrument to slow greenhouse gas emissions in the developing world. We propose that general positions on this debate are less helpful than drawing lessons from specific investigations into the features of individual projects that make them successful or not. Here, focusing on a site-specific REDD+ intervention in Pemba, Zanzibar (Tanzania), we examine the circumstances under which REDD+ has a chance of success, teasing out specific features of both REDD+ interventions and the socio-economic and institutional contexts that render REDD+ a potentially valuable complement to community forestry. Additionally, we highlight some unanticipated positive outcomes associated with the design features of REDD+ projects. Our broader goal is to move away from ideologically-driven debate to empirically-based identification of general conditions where REDD+ could work, and to provide policy recommendations.

BackgroundSelenium (Se), an essential trace mineral, has been implicated in preterm birth (PTB). We aimed to determine the association of maternal Se concentrations during pregnancy with PTB risk and gestational duration in a large number of samples collected from diverse populations.MethodsGestational duration data and maternal plasma or serum samples of 9946 singleton live births were obtained from 17 geographically diverse study cohorts. Maternal Se concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis. The associations between maternal Se with PTB and gestational duration were analysed using logistic and linear regressions. The results were then combined using fixed-effect and random-effect meta-analysis.FindingsIn all study samples, the Se concentrations followed a normal distribution with a mean of 93.8 ng/mL (SD: 28.5 ng/mL) but varied substantially across different sites. The fixed-effect meta-analysis across the 17 cohorts showed that Se was significantly associated with PTB and gestational duration with effect size estimates of an OR=0.95 (95% CI: 0.9 to 1.00) for PTB and 0.66 days (95% CI: 0.38 to 0.94) longer gestation per 15 ng/mL increase in Se concentration. However, there was a substantial heterogeneity among study cohorts and the random-effect meta-analysis did not achieve statistical significance. The largest effect sizes were observed in UK (Liverpool) cohort, and most significant associations were observed in samples from Malawi.InterpretationWhile our study observed statistically significant associations between maternal Se concentration and PTB at some sites, this did not generalise across the entire cohort. Whether population-specific factors explain the heterogeneity of our findings warrants further investigation. Further evidence is needed to understand the biologic pathways, clinical efficacy and safety, before changes to antenatal nutritional recommendations for Se supplementation are considered.

Mixed lineage kinase like protein (MLKL) is a key mediator of necroptosis. While previous studies highlighted the important role of MLKL as one of the central regulators of brain damage against acute ischemic neuronal injury, how the activation of MLKL mediates brain injuries and cell death remains unclear, especially in astrocytes. In a transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) rat model in vivo, and an oxygen-glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGD/Re) injury model in both primary cultured astrocytes and human astrocytes, we show that necrosulfonamide (NSA), a MLKL specific inhibitor, reduces infarction volume and improves neurological deficits in tMCAO-treated rats. In addition, NSA treatment, as well as RIP1K inhibitor Nec-1 or RIP3K inhibitor GSK-872 treatment, decreases the OGD/Re-induced leakage of LDH in both primary cultured astrocytes and human astrocytes. NSA treatment also reduces the number of propidium iodide (PI)-positive cells, and prevents the upregulation of necroptotic biomarkers such as MLKL/p-MLKL, RIP3K/p-RIP3K, and RIP1K/p-RIP1K in ischemic penumbra of cerebral cortex in tMCAO-treated rats or in OGD/Re-treated human astrocytes. Importantly, NSA treatment blocks both the nucleus and nuclear envelope localization of MLKL/p-MLKL and RIP3K/p-RIP3K in ischemic cerebral cortex induced by tMCAO. Similarly, Co-immunoprecipitation assay shows that NSA treatment decreases tMCAO- or OGD/Re- induced increased combination of MLKL and RIP3K in nuclear envelope of ischemic penumbra of cerebral cortex or of primary cultured astrocytes, respectively. RIP3K inhibitor GSK-872 also reduces tMCAO-induced increased combination of MLKL and RIP3K in nuclear envelope of ischemic penumbra of cerebral cortex. These data suggest NSA exerts protective effects against focal ischemia/reperfusion injury via inhibiting astrocytic necroptosis through preventing the upregulation of necroptotic kinases as well as blocking both the nucleus and nuclear envelope co-localization of p-MLKL and p-RIP3K. The translocation of p-MLKL, along with p-RIP3K, to the nuclear envelope and the nucleus may play a crucial role in MLKL-mediated necroptosis under ischemic conditions.

Purpose — The main goal of this study is to determine the relationship between job security and entrepreneurial activities. Method — This study used the quantitative method and secondary data in this investigation. The questionnaire was collected from 96 entrepreneurs for the sample size, where the collected data is from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) project database in Oman. The Smart-PLS technique’s simple regression method was employed to analyze data. Result — The empirical result found that there is a significant link between job security and entrepreneurial activity. In addition, job security makes the entrepreneur develop long-term strategic plans. In general, the government orientations in Oman 2040 vision support entrepreneurship and support openness, while Oman 2040 vision wants to reduce the contribution of oil revenues and raise the contribution of non-oil revenues. Contribution — This research contributes to the existing literature by improving the understanding of the significance of job security in improving entrepreneurial activity practices for entrepreneurs' projects. Furthermore, the finding provides empirical evidence of the ability of job security to be a valuable instrument for sustainable entrepreneurial activity.

However, unfortunately it turns out that the compensation provided by the Government to the residents of Tamansari 11 is deemed unfair, which means the Government should be able to provide compensation that is much more appropriate, taking into account that they have lived in the area for more than 20 years and that is where they can also get compensation. income from the livelihood they have, for example trading, then making the house as a boarding house and so on. The problems that occur in compensation for land procurement in Tamansari 11, Bandung City are based on DPKP3 Decree Number 538.2/1325a/DPKP3/2017 and the principle of justice for compensation for land acquisition in Tamansari 11, Bandung City. To answer this research, the analytical methods used are normative and qualitative. The results of this study that the principle of justice against compensation for land acquisition in Tamansari 11 Bandung City has not been achieved where this occurs because the Bandung city government does not carry out land acquisition procedures, namely deliberation to determine compensation as based on Law Number 2 of 2012.

Albendazole/ivermectin combination therapy is a promising alternative to benzimidazole monotherapy alone for Trichuris trichiura control. We used fecal DNA metabarcoding to genetically characterize Trichuris spp. populations in patient samples from Côte d'Ivoire showing lower (egg reduction rate <70%) albendazole/ivermectin sensitivity than those from Laos and Tanzania (egg reduction rates >98%). Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1 and ITS2 metabarcoding revealed the entire detected Côte d'Ivoire Trichuris population was phylogenetically distinct from T. trichiura found in Laos and Tanzania and was more closely related to T. suis. Mitochondrial genome sequencing of 8 adult Trichuris worms from Côte d'Ivoire confirmed their species-level differentiation. Sequences from human patients in Cameroon and Uganda and 3 captive nonhuman primates suggest this novel species, T. incognita, is distributed beyond Côte d'Ivoire and has zoonotic potential. Continued surveillance by using fecal DNA metabarcoding will be needed to determine Trichuris spp. geographic distribution and control strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Objectives: Despite efforts within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goal to end malnutrition by 2030, malnutrition and soil-transmitted helminth infections persist in sub-Saharan Africa. A significant barrier to success is the inadequate understanding of effective intervention methods. Most research on the gut microbiota's role in health has been conducted in developed countries, leaving a critical gap in knowledge regarding low-income populations. This study addresses this gap by expanding research on the gut microbiota of underprivileged populations to help tackle these public health challenges. Methods: We employed 16S rDNA sequencing to assess the bacterial gut microbiota composition of 60 children (mean age: 26.63 ± 6.36 months) and their 58 mothers (mean age: 30.03 ± 6.31 years) in Pemba, with a focus on helminth infection and nutritional status. Results: Our differential abundance analysis identified bacterial taxa that were significantly negatively associated with both helminth infections and malnutrition, highlighting the potential for microbiota-directed interventions to address these health issues simultaneously. Notably, we identified Akkermansia, Blautia, Dorea, and Odoribacter as promising probiotic candidates for such interventions. In stunted children, positive co-occurrences were observed between Lactobacillus, Prevotella, and Bacteroides, while Escherichia/Shigella displayed negative co-abundance relationships with short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) producers in the gut microbiota. These findings suggest that administering Lactobacillus and SCFA-producing probiotics to children may foster the growth of beneficial bacteria like Prevotella and Bacteroides while reducing the relative abundance of Escherichia/Shigella, potentially enhancing overall health. Conclusions: This study underscores the importance of microbiota-directed interventions in children and women of reproductive age as promising strategies, alongside established approaches, for combating helminth infections and malnutrition in vulnerable populations. Oyek is a healthy alternative food and is needed by various levels of society because it is high in carbohydrates and low in sugar. The production of motorcycle taxis in Lumbir Village still uses traditional methods and processing. In order to be able to penetrate a wider market and be able to increase the economic value of residents, it is important to apply appropriate technology for processing motorcycles. The application of appropriate technology will be efficient and sustainable with the institutional support of solid and skilled farmer groups. Empowerment of farmer organizations through production management and marketing is a necessity. The framework of this service activity was carried out and was welcomed by the residents of Lumbir Village. The activity was carried out using a participatory method by involving the target audience, namely the Mekar Sari farmer group with 24 members, the Sido Rukun farmer group with 20 members and community members to play an active role in the activity and was accompanied by a technology application team who acted as extension workers and facilitators. as well as continuous evaluation and monitoring. The monitoring results are expected to increase the desire and motivation to improve the standard of living and welfare of the target community. This technology transfer has answered the partner’s problems, namely First, the technological aspect: the availability of appropriate technology for processing motorcycles that are more modern, efficient, healthy and of good quality. The technology includes grinding machines, rice granules, solar and gas drying houses and product packaging equipment. Second, the Social Aspect: the service provider has made a social approach to the village government, community leaders and farmers about the benefits of motorcycle production technology. The conclusion is that in general, the application of this technology can increase the economic level of the members of the cassava farmer group, build a more efficient and quality processing system, and increase the economic value of the motorcycle product with the existence of quality motorcycle products, modern packaging and production permits from the government.
