Abstract

Chromium (Cr) contamination of soil has substantially deteriorated soil health and has interfered with sustainable agricultural production worldwide and therefore, its remediation is inevitable. Inoculation of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in association with nanotechnology has exerted broad based impacts in agriculture, and there is an urgent need to exploit their synergism in contaminated soils. Here, we investigated the effect of co-application of Cr-tolerant "Pseudomonas aeruginosa CKQ9" strain and nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) in improving the phytoremediation potential of aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis L.) under Cr contamination. Soil was contaminated by using potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) salt and 15 mg kg−1 contamination level in soil was maintained via spiking and exposure to Cr lasted throughout the duration of the experiment (120 days). We observed that the co-application alleviated the adverse impacts of Cr on aloe vera, and improved various plant attributes such as plant height, root area, number of leaves and gel contents by 51, 137, 67 and 49% respectively as compared to control treatment under Cr contamination. Similarly, significant boost in the activities of various antioxidants including catalase (124%), superoxide dismutase (87%), ascorbate peroxidase (36%), peroxidase (89%) and proline (34%) was pragmatic under contaminated soil conditions. In terms of soil Cr concentration and its plant uptake, co-application of P. aeruginosa and nZVI also reduced available Cr concentration in soil (50%), roots (77%) and leaves (84%), while simultaneously increasing the relative production index by 225% than un-inoculated control. Hence, integrating PGPR with nZVI can be an effective strategy for enhancing the phytoremediation potential of aloe vera. Combined effect of PGPR and nanotechnology in the bioremediation of toxic contaminants is well reported in literature. Most of these reports comprise the use of hyperaccumulator plants for phytoextraction of heavy metals. However, phytostabilization potential of hyperaccumulators is still un-explored. Abstract

In this study, copper (Cu)- and manganese (Mn)-based layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets were produced by modest and low-cost hydrothermal technique to display an improved photocatalytic performance toward the degradation of aqueous methylene blue (MB). The morphological and structural properties of the as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized through various techniques comprising XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDS, and their MB degradation activity was evaluated under visible light irradiation. SEM results explore that the synthesized LDH materials have a sheet-like morphology and are stacked layer by layer. Various analysis parameters, such as the effect of the contact time, concentration and pH of MB solutions were performed to optimize the performance of fabricated LDH materials. The results revealed that the as-synthesized CuAl-LDH and MnAl-LDH exhibited a 74.95 and 70.93% removal of MB under solar light within 180 min. Moreover, synthesized photocatalysts showed an excellent performance of up to four regeneration cycles. We believe that this study provides novel mechanistic insights into the design and preparation of highly competent photocatalysts using low-cost materials, with applications in environmental remediation. 39. MOLECULAR PHYLOGENETICS AND DATING OF ARECACEAE IN BANGLADESH INFERRED FROM MATK AND RBCL GENES.

Abstract

A molecular phylogenetic investigation was undertaken for 30 species belonging to 15 genera of the palm family Arecaceae in Bangladesh to infer evolutionary relationships and molecular dating utilizing plastid-based matK and rbcL genes through multifacetedalgorithm driven approaches with Neighbor-Joining, Maximum-Likelihood, and Bayesian Inference methods. The study revealed that matK has better species discrimination efficiency than rbcL gene due to its highly variable nature. Transition/transversion bias test corroborated this finding as matK showed higher bias (2.632) than rbcL (2.235). Nucleotide substitution patterns were visualized via HYPERMUT program, which unveiled higher variability in matK and lower variability in rbcL alignment. Phylogenetic trees constructed with matK revealed monophyletic nature of origin for all the three subfamilies, viz. Arecoideae, Coryphoideae and Calamoideae, while rbcL trees exhibited polyphyly for Coryphoideae and monophyly for Arecoideae and Calamoideae. All the nine tribes belonging to three subfamilies demonstrated monophyletic nature in matK trees. Bootstrap support and Bayesian posterior probability were found to be higher in matK topologies than that of rbcL. The molecular clock test unraveled an equal evolutionary rate for matK and unequal rate for rbcL sequences. Molecular dating approach unveiled Calamoideae to be the most ancient subfamily (65.75 MYA) among the three subfamilies that originated during the Late Cretaceous period in the Mesozoic era, whereas Coryphoideae and Arecoideae were found to have originated in the Cenozoic era.
