The following essay touches on a highly interesting problem for politically sensitive adult education: What are the ‘costs’ of educational advancement? The answer is sought in biographies of three prominent examples: Pierre Bourdieu, Annie Ernaux and Didier Eribon. The data is based on autobiographically oriented reflections of the protagonists – symptomatically not ‘classic’ autobiographies. The concentration on France has to do with the fact that in the French cultural tradition this level of reflection – not least through the works of the selected authors – has gained a particular meaning. The selection itself relates to astonishing differences in the influences of historical times and the relevance of cohort experiences. The result of the analysis is undoubtedly an ‘essayistic dramatisation’, not a hasty generalisation, but it could stimulate scientific discussion and systematic empirical research.

Die „Generalistikstudie“ bezieht sich auf eine umfangreiche qualitative Analyse der Diskurse, die sich mit den Auswirkungen des neuen Pflegeberufegesetzes (PflBG) auf die Pflege(bildungs)landschaft im Land Brandenburg auseinandersetzen. Das Gesetz ist seit Januar 2020 in Kraft, und sein Einfluss ist längst spürbar, weil seine Vorgaben beträchtliche Veränderungen des Ausbildungscurriculums der Pflege voraussetzen. Diese Option beeinflusst die anhaltende Pflege(bildungs)reformdiskussion im Lande, deren Profil Gegenstand der hier präsentierten Ergebnisse sein wird. Dabei geht es um „Diskurse“, die diese Reform betreffen. Solche Diskurse lassen sich als einflussreiche „Meinungscluster“ in einem „mentalen Feld“ darstellen. Dazu wurden drei Gruppendiskussionen mit jeweils sechs Schulleiter:innen durchgeführt und insgesamt 19 Expert:inneninterviews mit Vertreter:innen verschiedener Funktionen im Feld der Pflegeausbildung. Ergebnis der Studie ist die Identifikation von vier Bedeutungsclustern: (1) „Generalistik ohne Bodenhaftung“. Damit ist eine Diskursvariante gemeint, die der portugiesische Erziehungsphilosoph António Nóvoa mit Bezug auf „lebenslanges Lernen“ einmal einen planetspeak discourse genannt hat: eine Art „Geschwätz über den Wolken“. Die Beteiligten reden über etwas, und keiner scheint präzise zu wissen, worum es geht. (2) „Altenpflege als Opfer“. Dieser Diskurs hat eine doppelte Pointe: Er repräsentiert die harten ökonomischen Interessen der Altenpflege-Lobby, die bei der generalistischen Ausbildung den um erhebliche Praxisstunden reduzierten Anteil der für sie ‚billigen‘ Nutzung der Auszubildenden beklagen. Er berührt aber auch eine spezifische Betroffenheit bei den Mitarbeiter:innen der Altenpflege, die durch die generalistische Orientierung wesentliche Schwerpunktsetzungen der Altenpflege gefährdet sehen. (3) „Wir brauchen Hilfe“. Die auf die Alltagspraxis in den Pflegeschulen zukommenden Zusatzverpflichtungen (z.B. bei der Entwicklung neuer Curricula), die den „Hilfediskurs“ produzieren, bedürfen der flankierenden Begleitung durch erfahrene Expert:innen. (4) „Pflege mit Kopf und Hand“, ein Innovationsdiskurs, der von einer Pflegebildungselite geführt wird, die „Vorbehaltstätigkeiten“ des Pflegeberufes betont und den reflective practitioner (Donald Schön) im Auge hat und wirklich neue Perspektiven anzielt. Dieser Diskurs wird nur von einer Minderheit vertreten. Das Ergebnis deutet auf eine komplizierte Situation, die nach expertiser Begleitung und Beratung verlangt. The “Generalistic Study” refers to a comprehensive qualitative analysis of the discourses dealing with the effects of the new Nursing Professions Act (PflBG) on the nursing (education) landscape in the state of Brandenburg. The law has been in force since January 2020 and its impact has long been felt because its claims require significant changes to the nursing curriculum. This option influences the ongoing long-term nursing (education) reform discussion in the country, the profile of which will be the subject of the results presented here. It is about “discourses” that relate to this reform. Such discourses can be represented as influential “opinion clusters” in a “mental space”. For this purpose, three group discussions were conducted with six head teachers within each group and a total of 19 expert interviews with representatives of various functions in the field of nursing education. The result of the study is the identification of four meaning clusters: (1) “Generalistics without being down to earth”. This refers to a discourse variant that the Portuguese educational philosopher António Nóvoa once called a ‘planetspeak discourse’ with reference to “lifelong learning”: a sort of “chatter above the clouds”. The people involved are talking about something and nobody seems to know exactly what it is about. (2) “Elderly care as a victim”. This discourse has a double point: It represents the hard economic interests of the geriatric care lobby, which in generalistic training complains about the fact that the proportion of trainees’ work hours which being considered “cheap” has been remarkably reduced. However, it also touches on a specific concern among the employees of geriatric care, who see essential priorities of geriatric care endangered by the generalist orientation. (3) “We need help”. The additional obligations that come with everyday practice in nursing schools (e.g. in the development of new curricula), which produce this “help discourse”, require accompanying support from experienced experts. (4) “Care with head and hand”, an “innovation discourse”, which is proactively led by a nursing education elite, which emphasises “reserved activities” of the nursing profession and has the ‘reflective practitioner’ (Donald Schön) in mind and really aims for new perspectives. This discourse is only represented by a small minority. The result points to a complicated situation that requires expert guidance and advice.

Der vorliegende Forschungsbericht (Kurzfassung) stellt die Ergebnisse einer qualitativen Berufsfeldanalyse zur Situation der ‚Pflegeassistenz‘ im Land Brandenburg vor und präsentiert ein daraus entwickeltes Kompetenzprofil für die zukünftige generalistische Ausbildung von Pflegefachassistent*innen. Empirische Basis der Berufsfeldanalyse sind 44 Expert*inneninterviews sowie 11 teilnehmende Beobachtungen und anschließende Fokusinterviews der beobachteten Personen in verschiedenen Versorgungssettings der Pflege. Sowohl in den Expert*inneninterviews als auch in den teilnehmenden Beobachtungen zeigte sich, dass die Kernkompetenz der Pflegeassistent*innen in der personenzentrierten Grundpflege pflegebedürftiger Menschen gesehen wird. Pflegefachassistent*innen arbeiten eng mit Pflegefachfrauen und Pflegefachmännern zusammen. Als Kernmerkmale ihrer Tätigkeit haben sich die große (auch körperliche) Nähe, die Häufigkeit der Kontakte und die Kontinuität der Beziehungen zu den zu pflegenden Menschen gezeigt. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird in der Studie der Vorschlag gemacht, zukünftig die Berufsbezeichnung Pflegefachassistent*in anstelle von Pflegehelfer*in zu wählen. Ebenso wird dafür plädiert, dass die Ausbildung von Pflegefachassistent*innen über ein Jahr hinausgehen sollte, damit die Assistent*innen im Anschluss an ihre Ausbildung die Tätigkeiten kompetent ausführen können, die sie in der Regel jetzt schon in der Praxis übernehmen (müssen). Wie schwierig es allerdings ist, ein einheitliches Bild zu zeichnen, zeigt sich vor allem bei einem Vergleich der Meinungscluster in den verschiedenen Berufsdomänen: Die Expert*inneninterviews aus den Pflegeschulen dokumentieren in ihrer Mehrzahl eine überraschende Distanz zu den Pflegeassistent*innen. Viele werten sie ab. Dieser Eindruck wiederholt sich nicht in den Kliniken. Die Pflegefachkräfte können mehrheitlich das Engagement der Assistent*innen wertschätzen. Diese Tendenz verstärkt sich noch in den Pflegeheimen, weil hier die Dauer und Intensität der Kontakte mit den Klient*innen vor allem von den Pflegehelfer*innen getragen wird. Anders ist das in der ambulanten Pflege. Hier überwiegt aufgrund des Zeitdrucks und des Fachkräftemangels die Fokussierung auf das pflegetechnisch Notwendige. Das Gesamtbild erscheint damit eher widersprüchlich. Die Situation in den verschiedenen Berufsdomänen ist kaum vergleichbar. Umso notwendiger wäre eine Vereinheitlichung der Ausbildungsanforderungen im Sinne eines generalistischen Konzepts auch für die Pflegefachassistenz. Die Studie schließt mit einem differenzierten Vorschlag zur „Kernkompetenz“ und den ausdifferenzierten Kompetenzbereichen der Pflegefachassistenz. This research report (short version) presents the results of a qualitative professional field analysis on the situation of “nursing assistants” in the state of Brandenburg and presents a competence profile developed from this for the future generalistic training of nursing assistants. The empirical basis of the professional field analysis are 44 expert interviews and 11 participant observations and subsequent focus interviews of the observed persons in different care settings. Both the expert interviews and the participating observations showed that the core competence of the nursing assistants is seen in the person-centered basic care of people in need of care. Nursing assistants work closely with nurses. The core characteristics of their work have been the emotional and physical closeness, the frequency of contacts and the continuity of relationships with the people to be cared for. Against this background, the study proposes choosing the job title nursing assistant instead of nursing aide in the future. It is also advocated that the training of nursing assistants should last longer than a year so that the assistants can competently carry out the activities after their training that they usually (have to) take on in practice. Nevertheless, how difficult it is to draw a uniform picture of the (future) occupation becomes particularly evident when comparing the opinion clusters in the various professional domains: the majority of the expert interviews from the nursing schools show a surprising distance to the nursing assistants. Many devalue them. This impression is not repeated in the clinics. Most of the nursing staff can appreciate the commitment of the assistants. This tendency is even more pronounced in the nursing homes, because here the duration and intensity of the contacts with the clients are mainly borne by the nursing assistants. It is different in outpatient care. Due to the time pressure and the shortage of skilled workers, the focus here is on what is technically necessary for care. The overall picture appears to be rather contradictory. The situation in the various professional domains is hardly comparable. It would be all the more necessary to standardise the training requirements in the sense of a general concept for nursing assistants. The study concludes with a differentiated proposal for the “core competence” and the differentiated areas of competence of nursing assistants.

This article discusses an apparently ‘outdated’ concept of thinking about learning within the lifespan. Obviously, the term ‘biographical learning’ has been replaced by the label of ‘lifelong learning’. In a first section, this position is critically examined and the importance of the biography for all learning experiences is emphasised. In a second step of argumentation, it is conceptually specified what the peculiarity of biographical learning actually is. The specifity of this learning concept can only be understood from a biographical perspective through the dimensions of ‘temporality’, ‘contextuality’ and ‘reflexivity’. The concluding third part introduces the concept of ‘biographicity’ and proposes a theoretical understanding of the complex biographical learning idea using the ‘grammar metaphor’ from language theory.
