ABSTRACT: Introduction: Oral cancer has emerged as a significant public health issue, with 90% of instances because of avoidable causes. Smokeless tobacco usage is thought to be a substantial source of cytological alterations in the oral mucosa, and snuff (Shamma) is often used in Saudi Arabia. In this study, we investigated community awareness of Shamma as a cause of oral cancer in the Jazan region's general population. Methods: A cross-sectional A self-administered questionnaire was used in analytical research of people in the Jazan region to determine their awareness of Shamma consumption and its association with oral cancer. The collected data were analysed with SPSS software. Results: About 1380 participants were included in the study. 730 (52.9%) were females and most of the participants (63%) were between eighteen and thirty years old. About three-quarters 1022 (74.1%) of the participants had previously heard about oral cancer, 457 (44.7%) stated that it is possible to avoid oral cancer and 593 (58%) mentioned that oral cancer is treatable. About 45.1% of the participants believe that older ages are risk factor of oral cancer. Concerning awareness of the warning oral cancer's symptoms and signs; more than half (76.9%) mentioned oral ulcers. Regarding knowledge about risk factors for oral cancer; the most often mentioned ones were smokeless tobacco (87%), smoking (86%), followed by khat chewing (62.1%), and alcohol (58.9%). About 66.2% of the participants have tried to stop Shamma in the past 12 months. We found that gender and age are a risk factor for oral cancer, where they are correlated significantly with knowledge and awareness of smokeless tobacco (P value < 0.001 and 0.049, respectively. Conclusion: Good overall awareness and knowledge about Shamma and smokeless tobacco. More than half of the individuals recognized Shamma as an oral cancer risk factor with accuracy. Oral ulcers were revealed to be the most well-known sign of oral cancer among survey participants. It was shown that there was a significant correlation between gender awareness and knowledge levels. Background: COVID-19 and malaria cause significant morbidity and mortality globally. Co-infection of these diseases can worsen their impact on public health. This review aims to synthesize literature on the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 and malaria co-infection to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using MeSH terms and keywords from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to January 2023. The review included original articles on COVID-19 and malaria co-infection, evaluating their methodological quality and certainty of evidence. It was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023393562). Results: Out of 1,596 screened articles, 19 met the inclusion criteria. These studies involved 2,810 patients, 618 of whom had COVID-19 and malaria co-infection. Plasmodium falciparum and vivax were identified as causative organisms in six studies. Hospital admission ranged from three to 18 days. Nine studies associated co-infection with severe disease, ICU admission, assisted ventilation, and related complications. One study reported 6% ICU admission, and mortality rates of 3%, 9.4%, and 40.4% were observed in four studies. Estimated crude mortality rates were 10.71 and 5.87 per 1,000 person-days for patients with and without concurrent malaria, respectively. Common co-morbidities included Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory disorders. Conclusion: Most patients with COVID-19 and malaria co-infection experienced short-term hospitalization and mild to moderate disease severity. However, at presentation, co-morbidities and severe malaria were significantly associated with higher mortality or worse clinical outcomes. These findings emphasize the importance of early detection, prompt treatment, and close monitoring of patients with COVID-19 and malaria co-infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The human gut microbiota is crucial to maintaining health and preventing diseases. The general population's knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding microbiota composition and the factors affecting it remain poorly understood in Saudi Arabia. The present cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices among the general population in the Jazan Province of Saudi Arabia regarding the gut microbiota and its main influencing factors. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was employed, utilizing a validated self-administered online questionnaire to collect data from participants aged 18 years and older. The study population excluded nonresidents of the Jazan region, individuals below 18, and those who declined to participate. Nonrandomized convenience sampling was used to recruit participants from the Jazan Province, targeting the general population. Results: One thousand one hundred twenty-six participants completed the survey, resulting in a response rate of 93%. Most participants (50.4%) had average microbiota knowledge, 14.7% demonstrated good understanding, and 34.9% had poor knowledge. Regarding probiotics, the findings indicated that 76.4% of participants exhibited insufficient knowledge, 21.1% had average knowledge, and 2.5% displayed good knowledge. Most participants (65.7%) held a neutral attitude toward antibiotics and probiotics. Conclusion: This study highlights a significant gap in understanding probiotics among the general population in the Jazan Region. Comprehensive education and awareness campaigns are urgently needed to promote a better understanding of microbiota composition, its significance for health, and the potential benefits of probiotics. Background: Monkeypox outbreaks in non-endemic countries emphasize the importance of being prepared to prevent its progression to a pandemic. To effectively control monkeypox, healthcare providers must have sufficient knowledge and good attitudes and practices to limit its spread. We initiated this project to assess the factors associated with health workers' knowledge and attitude toward monkeypox in southwestern Saudi Arabia. Methods: We included 398 eligible health workers working at various health facilities. Data was collected using an online survey, and participants had an opportunity to consent. We conducted descriptive statistics for all variables and used chi-square statistics, t-test, and multivariate analysis to establish the association between health workers' demographic characteristics and knowledge of monkeypox disease. Results: The mean age was 30.93 ± 8.25 years for the included participants, and most of them were between 22 and 29 years, male, single, nurses, working in government hospitals, and had worked for at least five years. The chi-square and t-test showed that the participants' knowledge level was significantly related to age, marital status, job title, and medical practice. Most of the participants had low knowledge and good attitudes toward monkeypox prevention measures. Multivariate analysis showed that higher knowledge was associated with younger age after controlling all other significant bivariate relationships between knowledge and demographics. Conclusions: This study found low knowledge levels and high good attitude levels of monkeypox among the participants. As such, there is a need to support health workers in understanding monkeypox epidemiology, prevention, and treatment. INTRODUCTION Smoking cessation has significant health benefits. The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy and related factors of smoking cessation therapies in the Jazan Region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study that took place at smoking cessation clinics in primary healthcare centers between January 2019 and January 2020. RESULTS This study enrolled a total of 103 people. The success rate for quitting smoking was 36% at three months, with a 13% relapse rate at six months. Age (p=0.017), occupation (p=0.046), daily cigarette intake (p=0.015), and number of visits (p=0.001) were all found to be significant determinants of smoking cessation. In the multivariate analysis, only the number of visits increased the likelihood to quit smoking (AOR=0.31; 95% CI: 0.15-0.63). Self-efficacy was cited as the primary reason for quitting smoking by 71% of the participants, whereas family support, smoking cessation therapies, and friends' support were cited as predictive variables by 18%, 10%, and 1% of the participants, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Smokers who received the smoking cessation intervention package were three times more likely to succeed in giving up smoking when compared to those who received the routine service. Regular follow-up during smoking cessation interventions significantly enhanced the quit rate. It is recommended that pharmacotherapy strategies and intense therapy performed face-to-face with a cessation counselor be combined to improve the quit rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Brucellosis is an endemic zoonotic infection in Saudi Arabia, including Jazan Province, and epidemiological reports about this disease are limited. In this study, we aimed to investigate knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding brucellosis among the general population of Jazan Province, southwestern Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted using a pretested questionnaire that assessed the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward Brucellosis. The calculated sample size was 384, and 1,055 participants were included representing various genders, ages, and levels of education. Data were collected between March and April 2022 and analyzed using descriptive, chi-square, and t-test analyses. Results: Only 50% of the included participants have heard about Brucellosis. Among those who had heard about Brucellosis, 70% had a good knowledge about Brucellosis and that was signifi- cantly associated with male gender, being healthcare workers (HCWs), and having a higher level of education. Participants who directly involved in animal care represented 9%, and attitudes and practices regarding brucellosis were varied from average to unsatisfactory. This variation was significantly affected by the level of knowledge. Conclusion: About 50% of the general population of Jazan Province had never heard about Brucellosis, in a region found prevalent for this disease. Good knowledge was recorded in 70% of those who were aware of Brucellosis, which was significantly associated with the male sex, job as being HCW, and having a higher level of education. These results necessitate public awareness campaign activities to improve knowledge and practices, especially among women, the younger generation, and individuals with limited educational backgrounds. Introduction Herpes zoster (HZ) is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and can lead to complications such as postherpetic neuralgia. Although vaccines are available to prevent HZ, the level of concern about HZ and its vaccines in our region remains unknown. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding HZ and the HZ vaccines among adults aged ≥50 years in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire distributed to adults aged ≥50 years and data were collected on demographics, knowledge of HZ and its vaccines, attitudes, and practices. Multiple logistic regression examined factors associated with knowledge levels. Results Of 295 participants, 58% and 67.5% had low knowledge of HZ and its vaccines, respectively. Knowledge of HZ significantly differed by age, education, and occupation. Only 50% knew HZ affects nerves and skin and 28.8% knew HZ can be transmitted between individuals. Knowledge of the vaccine significantly differed by gender and information source. Conclusions This population has substantial knowledge gaps regarding HZ and vaccination. Background: The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the social stigma directed toward patients with HIV are serious public health issues. We aimed to evaluate the HIV knowledge base and stigmatizing attitudes toward patients with HIV among students enrolled in medical schools in Saudi Arabia., Methods: This cross-sectional study included students at medical colleges in Saudi Arabia and was conducted between February and March 2023. We used non-random convenience sampling with an online chain referral via a validated Arabic questionnaire composed of 35 questions. Data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistics., Results: A total of 1,213 medical students (women: 56.6%) participated in the study. Students in clinical years had a higher level of HIV knowledge than their pre-clinical colleagues. Logistic regression analysis revealed that participants who gave incorrect answers to questions related to mother-to-child and casual contact HIV transmission had a higher likelihood of harboring a negative attitude towards patients with HIV. Conversely, those who correctly answered queries on prevention and treatment were less likely to have stigmatizing attitudes. A significant proportion of this cohort harbored negative attitudes toward patients with HIV, with the sex and geographic location of participants being significant predictors of negative attitudes., Conclusion: Our data have revealed a significant percentage of medical students in Saudi Arabia to have misconceptions about HIV transmission and prevention, and stigmatizing attitudes toward patients with HIV, indicating a need for targeted interventions to enhance the HIV knowledge base in this population of future caregivers., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.net.)

Background: With evolving diabetes technology, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and time in range have been advanced as critical measurements to assess complications. They have shown improvement in A1C levels and decreased episodes of blood glucose extrusion., Aims: This study aimed to assess the awareness and utilization of blood glucose time in range and its effectiveness in reducing the risk of blood glucose extrusion and improving blood glucose metrics among patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus., Methods: A retrospective study included 342 patients who met the inclusion criteria and were using the CGM, aiming for a TIR of 70% daily. Glycemic control was followed using TIR data, blood glucose extrusion frequency (including hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia events), active sensor time, average blood glucose, and glucose management indicator (GMI) levels., Results: A total of 342 individuals participated in this study, the majority of whom were below 18 years of age (62.3%). The hypoglycemic frequency was significantly increased compared to the baseline, and most participants experienced hypoglycemia events (p = 0.0001). The incidences increased over time, with 90.9% and 93% having hypoglycemia at 60 and 90 days (p = 0.0001), respectively. The active scan and sensor time were not followed, which led to the blood glucose target not being achieved, with no improvement throughout the study. Consequently, no improvement occurred in glycemic control., Conclusion: CGM technology has been promising and proven effective in improving glycemic. Background The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare continues to spark interest and has been the subject of extensive discussion in recent years as well as its potential effects on future medical specialties, including radiology. In this study, we aimed to study the impact of AI on the preference of medical students at Jazan University in choosing radiology as a future specialty. Methodology An observational cross-sectional study was conducted using a pre-tested self-administered online questionnaire among medical students at Jazan University. Data were cleaned, coded, entered, and analyzed using SPSS (SPSS Inc., USA) version 25. Statistical significance was defined as a P-value of less than 0.05. We examined the respondents' preference for radiology rankings with the presence and absence of AI. Radiology's ranking as a preferred specialty with or without AI integration was statistically analyzed for associations with baseline characteristics, personal opinions, and previous exposures among those who had radiology as one of their top three options. Results Approximately 27.4% of males and 28.3% of females ranked radiology among their top three preferred choices. Almost 65.2% were exposed to radiology topics through pre-clinical lectures. The main sources of information about AI for the studied group were medical students (41%) and the Internet (27.5%). The preference of students for radiology was significantly affected when it is assessed by AI (P < 0.05). Around (16.1%) of those who chose radiology as one of their top three choices strongly agree that AI will decrease the job opportunities for radiologists. Logistic regression analysis showed that being a female is significantly associated with an increased chance to replace radiology with other specialty when it is integrated with AI (Crude odds ratio (COR) = 1.91). Conclusion Our results demonstrated that the students' choices were significantly affected by the presence of AI.
