Abstract

The time of the onset and the nature of the extension in the Aegean area have been problematic owing to the confusion of neotectonic replacement structures with neotectonic revolutionary structures. This paper concerns two rift systems of different age and orientations in the Gekova region of southwestem Anatolia. The first system has a northwest-southeast trend with a Middle to Upper Miocene infill, whereas the second system is orientated in an east-west direction and filled with Plio-Quaternary rocks. Structural and palaeomagnetic data indicate that the first system originally had a north-south trend, and then bodily rotated anticlockwise to its present orientation before the end of the Miocene. Both the orientations and the structural patterns of these cross-cutting rift systems suggest that they resulted from two different and successive tectonic regimes. Regional geology suggests that the generative regime of the older system was characterized by north-south compression and related to the palaeotectonic evolution of southwestem Anatolia, whereas that of the younger system is characterized by north-south extension and relates to the neotectonic evolution of this region. This inference contradicts, at least in southwestern Anatolia, some recent claims that the extensional tectonics and the related rift formation in the Aegean region began in the early Miocene, with the alleged demise of the compressional palaeotectonic during the late Oligocene, but is consistent with older views that placed the onset of north-south extension into the later middle Miocene. The formation of the Aegean Sea seems to be the result of these two complicated and contrasting, succesive tectonic regimes that have affected this region since middle Miocene times.

Abstract

In the present paper, the effect of La2O3 (0.25, 0.5 and 1 wt.%) addition on the phase stability, porosity, density, hardness, fracture toughness, compressive strength and brittleness index of hydroxyapatite modified with 1 wt.% of MgO was investigated. Hydroxyapatite (HA) without additives sintered at 1300°C has mixture of dominant hydroxyapatite phase with beta-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP), alpha-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and calcium oxide (CaO) phases. The microstructure is characterized with transgranular microcracks and oversized grains. Although the density and hardness of the pure HA increased with increasing temperature, a steady decrease in fracture toughness (from 0.96 to 0.71MPa•m1/2) and compressive strength (from 130.2 to 65.6MPa) was observed. For the HA modified with 1 wt.% of MgO the highest compressive strength (183.2MPa) and fracture toughness (1.47MPa•m1/2) were obtained at 1200°C and at this temperature the brittleness index was 3.24 μm-1/2. Increase in the sintering temperature led to the increase of the brittleness index of the pure HA,MgO modified HA and La2O3-MgO modified HA samples. The addition of 1 wt.%La2O3 to 1 wt.% MgO-HA contributed to the increase in the compressive strength of about 10%(from 183.2 to 202.0MPa), fracture toughness of about 69% (from 1.37 to 2.32MPa•m1/2) and also decrease of the brittleness index from 3.24 to 2.18 μm-1/2. The best performance after sintering at 1300°C was obtained for the MgO-HA sample with 0.25wt.% La2O3. As a result of this study, a new candidate material for biomedical application with superior mechanical properties and the phases that do not cause adverse reactions in the human body could be 1 wt.% MgO-HA modified with 1 wt.% La2O3 and sintered at 1200°C.

46. Palaeoenvironmental investigation of sapropelic sediments from the Marmara Sea: A biostratigraphic approach to palaeoceanographic history during the last glacial-Holocene

Abstract

High-resolution micropalaeontological examination of two cores recovered from the Central Basin of the Marmara Sea distinguishes seven biostratigraphical zones within pre-sapropelic (Pr1 & 2 zones), sapropelic (Sap1 & 2 zones) and post-sapropelic (Po1-2-3 zones) sediments. The pre-sapropelic sediments at the basal section of the cores reflect the lake stage of the Marmara Sea when it was isolated both from the Black and Mediterranean seas. First colonization of foraminifers at about 11-10.4 ky BP indicate the beginning of marine conditions following the entry of Mediterranean waters through the Çanakkale Strait. Sapropelic sediments deposited at about 10.3-6.2 ky BP were associated with enhanced productivity of the surface waters, as inferred from the confined abundance of Globigerina bulloides in sapropelic zones. The first stage of the sapropelic deposition started under anoxic-close to anoxic bottom water conditions and continued in clysoxic-suboxic conditions, as deduced from benthic foraminiferal assemblages. Towards the end of the sapropelic deposition, suboxic conditions dominated. The most enriched ?18O values occur within the sapropelic sediments suggesting that a relative freshening of the surface water must have occurred afber deposition of the sapropelic sediments; this observation casts doubt on the postulated strong Black Sea outflow during their formation. Post-sapropelic sediments deposited during the last 6 ky BP have been divided into three intervals by distinct distribution patterns of foraminiferal fauna, possibly indicating relative changes in the Marmara Sea during the Late Holocene. The benthic foraminiferal assemblages in these intervals show that suboxic bottom conditions continued from the last stage of the sapropelic deposition up to the present day. Copyright © TÜBITAK.
