In this paper, attention is focused on the analysis and optimization of energy flows in networked systems via a fluid-dynamic approach. Considering the real case of an energy hub, the proposed model deals with conservation laws on arcs and linear programming problems at nodes. Optimization of the energy flows is accomplished by considering a cost functional, which estimates a term proportional to the kinetic energy of the overall system in consideration. As the real optimization issue deals with an integral formulation for which precise solutions have to be studied through variational methods, a decentralized approach is considered. First, the functional is optimized for a simple network having a unique node, with an incoming arc and two outgoing ones. The optimization deals with distribution coefficients, and explicit solutions are found. Then, global optimization is obtained via the local optimal parameters at the various nodes of the real system. The obtained results prove the correctness of the proposed approach and show the evident advantages of optimization procedures dealing with variational approaches.

The secure operation of the transmission grid is of primary importance for any power system operator. However, the introduction of new technologies, market deregulation, and increasing levels of interconnectivity have made the analysis and assessment of power system security both more challenging and essential than ever. In this context, data-driven-based methodologies are being increasingly employed to classify and anticipate insecure future states, and make inferences on potential triggers of undesired operational conditions. This paper provides a comprehensive and systematic review of this fast-moving research area and covers data-driven-based methodologies deployed in both static and dynamic security assessment. Particular attention is paid to recent trends, such as the use of spatiotemporal feature selection algorithms and the increasing research activity in short-term voltage stability and frequency stability, which are not yet widely assessed as a collective in the existing literature.

Wakes between neighboring wind turbines are a significant source of energy loss in wind farm operations. Extensive research has been conducted to analyze and understand wind turbine wakes, ranging from aerodynamic descriptions to advanced control strategies. However, there is a relatively overlooked research area focused on characterizing real-world wind farm operations under wake conditions using Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) parameters. This study aims to address this gap by presenting a detailed discussion based on SCADA data analysis from a real-world test case. The analysis focuses on two selected wind turbines within an onshore wind farm operating under wake conditions. Operation curves and data-driven methods are utilized to describe the turbines’ performance. Particularly, the analysis of the operation curves reveals that a wind turbine operating within a wake experiences reduced power production not only due to the velocity deficit but also due to increased turbulence intensity caused by the wake. This effect is particularly prominent during partial load operation when the rotational speed saturates. The turbulence intensity, manifested in the variability of rotational speed and blade pitch, emerges as the crucial factor determining the extent of wake-induced power loss. The findings indicate that turbulence intensity is strongly correlated with the proximity of the wind direction to the center of the wake sector. However, it is important to consider that these two factors may convey slightly different information, possibly influenced by terrain effects. Therefore, both turbulence intensity and wind direction should be taken into account to accurately describe the behavior of wind turbines operating within wakes.

The performance evaluation of wind turbines operating in real-world environments typically relies on analyzing the power curve, which shows the relationship between wind speed and power output. However, conventional univariate models that consider only wind speed as an input variable often fail to fully explain the observed performance of wind turbines, as power output depends on multiple variables, including working parameters and ambient conditions. To overcome this limitation, the use of multivariate power curves that consider multiple input variables needs to be explored. Therefore, this study advocates for the application of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methods in constructing data-driven power curve models that incorporate multiple input variables for condition monitoring purposes. The proposed workflow aims to establish a reproducible method for identifying the most appropriate input variables from a more comprehensive set than is usually considered in the literature. Initially, a sequential feature selection approach is employed to minimize the root-mean-square error between measurements and model estimates. Subsequently, Shapley coefficients are computed for the selected input variables to estimate their contribution towards explaining the average error. Two real-world data sets, representing wind turbines with different technologies, are discussed to illustrate the application of the proposed method. The experimental results of this study validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in detecting hidden anomalies. The methodology successfully identifies a new set of highly explanatory variables linked to the mechanical or electrical control of the rotor and blade pitch, which have not been previously explored in the literature. These findings highlight the novel insights provided by the methodology in uncovering crucial variables that significantly contribute to anomaly detection.

Rising wind energy integration, accompanied by a decreasing level of system inertia, requires additional sources of ancillary services. Wind turbines based on doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) can provide inertial and primary frequency support when equipped with specific controls. This paper investigates the effect of frequency support provision by DFIGs on the small-signal stability of power systems. To this end, a modified version of the Kundur two-area test system is employed to analyze different scenarios. Wind energy generation is either added to the existing system or displaces part of the synchronous generation. Simulations show that primary frequency support tends to improve the damping of electromechanical oscillations and deteriorate it for converter control-based ones. On the other hand, the inertial response depends on the control parameters.

The growing attention to environmental issues is leading to an increasing integration of renewable energy sources into electrical grids. This integration process could contribute to power system decarbonization, supporting the diversification of primary energy sources and enhancing the security of energy supply, which is threatened by the uncertain costs of conventional energy sources. Despite these environmental and economical benefits, many technological and regulatory problems should be fixed in order to significantly increase the level of penetration of renewable power generators, which are connected to power transmission and distribution systems via power electronic interfaces. Indeed, these converter-interfaced generators (CIGs) perturb grid operation, especially those fueled by non-programmable energy sources (e.g., wind and solar generators), affecting the system stability and making power systems more vulnerable to dynamic perturbations. To face these issues, the conventional operating procedures based on pre-defined system conditions, which are currently adopted in power system operation tools, should be enhanced in order to allow the “online” solution of complex decision-making problems, providing power system operators with the necessary measures and alerts to promptly adjust the system. A comprehensive analysis of the most promising research directions and the main enabling technologies for addressing this complex issue is presented in this paper.

The limitation of transmission lines thermal capacity plays a crucial role in the safety and reliability of power systems. Dynamic thermal line rating approaches aim to estimate the transmission line’s temperature and assess its compliance with the limitations above. Existing physics-based standards estimate the temperature based on environment and line conditions measured by several sensors. This manuscript shows that estimation accuracy can be improved by adopting a data-driven Digital Twin approach. The proposed method exploits machine learning by learning the input–output relation between the physical sensors data and the actual conductor temperature, serving as a digital equivalent to physics-based standards. An experimental assessment on real data, comparing the proposed approach with the IEEE 738 standard, shows a reduction of 60% of the Root Mean Squared Error and a decrease in the maximum estimation error from above 10 °C to below 7 °C. These preliminary results suggest that the Digital Twin provides more accurate and robust estimations, serving as a complement, or a potential alternative, to traditional methods.

Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) are becoming the more prominent solution compared to fossil fuels cars technology due to its significant role in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction, flexible storage, and ancillary service provision as a Distributed Generation (DG) resource in Vehicle to Grid (V2G) regulation mode. However, large-scale penetration of PEVs and growing demand of energy intensive Data Centers (DCs) brings undesirable higher load peaks in electricity demand hence, impose supply-demand imbalance and threaten the reliability of wholesale and retail power market. In order to overcome the aforementioned challenges, the proposed research considers smart Distributed Power System (DPS) comprising conventional sources, renewable energy, V2G regulation, and flexible storage energy resources. Moreover, price and incentive based Demand Response (DR) programs are implemented to sustain the balance between net demand and available generating resources in the DPS. In addition, we adapted a novel strategy to implement the computational intensive jobs of the proposed DPS model including incoming load profiles, V2G regulation, battery State of Charge (SOC) indication, and fast computation in decision based automated DR algorithm using Fast Performance Computing resources of DCs. In response, DPS provide economical and stable power to DCs under strict power quality constraints. Finally, the improved results are verified using case study of ISO California integrated with hybrid generation.

The large penetration of wind generators in existing electrical grids induces critical issues that are pushing the system operators to improve several critical operation functions, such as the security analysis and the spinning reserve assessment, with the purpose of mitigating the effects induced by the injected power profiles, which are ruled by the intermittent and not-programmable wind dynamics. Although numerous forecasting tools have been proposed in the literature to predict the generated power profiles in function of the estimated wind speed, further and more complex phenomena need to be investigated in order to take into account the effects of the forecasting uncertainty on power system operation. In order to deal with this issue, this paper proposes a probabilistic model based on Markov chains, which predicts the wind power profiles injected into the grid, considering the real generator model and the effects of the power curtailments imposed by the grid operator. Experimental results obtained on a real case study are presented and discussed in order to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The large-scale deployment of pervasive sensors and decentralized computing in modern smart grids is expected to exponentially increase the volume of data exchanged by power system applications. In this context, the research for scalable and flexible methodologies aimed at supporting rapid decisions in a data rich, but information limited environment represents a relevant issue to address. To this aim, this paper investigates the role of Knowledge Discovery from massive Datasets in smart grid computing, exploring its various application fields by considering the power system stakeholder available data and knowledge extraction needs. In particular, the aim of this paper is dual. In the first part, the authors summarize the most recent activities developed in this field by the Task Force on “Enabling Paradigms for High-Performance Computing in Wide Area Monitoring Protective and Control Systems” of the IEEE PSOPE Technologies and Innovation Subcommittee. Differently, in the second part, the authors propose the development of a data-driven forecasting methodology, which is modeled by considering the fundamental principles of Knowledge Discovery Process data workflow. Furthermore, the described methodology is applied to solve the load forecasting problem for a complex user case, in order to emphasize the potential role of knowledge discovery in supporting post processing analysis in data-rich environments, as feedback for the improvement of the forecasting performances.

The Multiple Microgrids (MMGs) concept has been identified as a promising solution for the management of large-scale power grids in order to maximize the use of widespread renewable energies sources. However, its deployment in realistic operation scenarios is still an open issue due to the presence of non-ideal and unreliable communication systems that allow each component within the power network to share information about its state. Indeed, due to technological constraints, multiple time-varying communication delays consistently appear during data acquisition and the transmission process and their effects must be considered in the control design phase. To this aim, this paper addresses the voltage regulation control problem for MMGs systems in the presence of time-varying communication delays. To solve this problem, we propose a novel hierarchical two-layer distributed control architecture that accounts for the presence of communication latencies in the information exchange. More specifically, the upper control layer aims at guaranteeing a proper and economical reactive power dispatch among MMGs, while the lower control layer aims at ensuring voltage regulation of all electrical buses within each MG to the desired voltage set-point. By leveraging a proper Driver Generator Nodes Selection Algorithm, we first provide the best choice of generator nodes which, considering the upper layer control goal, speeds up the voltage synchronization process of all the buses within each MG to the voltage set-point computed by the upper-control layer. Then, the lower control layer, on the basis of this desired voltage value, drives the reactive power capability of each smart device within each MG and compensates for possible voltage deviations. Simulation analysis is carried out on the realistic case study of an MMGs system consisting of two identical IEEE 14-bus test systems and the numerical results disclose the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, as well as its robustness with respect to load fluctuations.

Prevention and mitigation of low probability, high impact events is becoming a priority for power system operators, as natural disasters are hitting critical infrastructures with increased frequency all over the world. Protecting power networks against these events means improving their resilience in planning, operation and restoration phases. This paper introduces a framework based on time-varying interval Markov Chains to assess system’s resilience to catastrophic events. After recognizing the difficulties in accurately defining transition probabilities, due to the presence of data uncertainty, this paper proposes a novel approach based on interval mathematics, which allows representing the elements of the transition matrices by intervals, and computing reliable enclosures of the transient state probabilities. The proposed framework is validated on a case study, which is based on the resilience analysis of a power system in the presence of multiple contemporary faults. The results show how the proposed framework can successfully enclose all the possible outcomes obtained through Monte Carlo simulation. The main advantages are the low computational burden and high scalability achieved.

Modern power system operation should comply with strictly reliability and security constraints, which aim at guarantee the correct system operation also in the presence of severe internal and external disturbances. Amongst the possible phenomena perturbing correct system operation, the predictive assessment of the impacts induced by extreme weather events has been considered as one of the most critical issues to address, since they can induce multiple, and large-scale system contingencies. In this context, the development of new computing paradigms for resilience analysis has been recognized as a very promising research direction. To address this issue, this paper proposes two methodologies, which are based on Time Varying Markov Chain and Dynamic Bayesian Network, for assessing the system resilience against extreme wind gusts. The main difference between the proposed methodologies and the traditional solution techniques is the improved capability in modelling the occurrence of multiple component faults and repairing, which cannot be neglected in the presence of extreme events, as experienced worldwide by several Transmission System Operators. Several cases studies and benchmark comparisons are presented and discussed in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods in the task of assessing the power system resilience in realistic operation scenarios.

Traditional energy systems were planned and operated independently, but the diffusion of distributed and renewable energy systems led to the development of new modeling concepts, such as the energy hub. The energy hub is an integrated paradigm, based on the challenging idea of multi-carrier energy systems, in which multiple inputs are conditioned, converted and stored in order to satisfy different types of energy demand. To solve the energy hub optimal scheduling problem, uncertainty sources, such as renewable energy production, price volatility and load demand, must be properly considered. This paper proposes a novel methodology, based on extended Affine Arithmetic, which enables the solving of the optimal scheduling problem in the presence of multiple and heterogeneous uncertainty sources. Realistic case studies are presented and discussed in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

The large-scale integration of renewable power generators in power grids may cause complex technical issues, which could hinder their hosting capacity. In this context, the mitigation of the grid voltage fluctuations represents one of the main issues to address. Although different control paradigms, based on both local and global computing, could be deployed for online voltage regulation in active power networks, the identification of the most effective approach, which is influenced by the available computing resources, and the required control performance, is still an open problem. To face this issue, in this paper, the mathematical backbone, the expected performance, and the architectural requirements of a novel decentralized control paradigm based on dynamic agents are analyzed. Detailed simulation results obtained in a realistic case study are presented and discussed to prove the effectiveness and the robustness of the proposed method.

The massive penetration of wind generators in electrical power systems asks for effective wind power forecasting tools, which should be high reliable, in order to mitigate the effects of the uncertain generation profiles, and fast enough to enhance power system operation. To address these two conflicting objectives, this paper advocates the role of knowledge discovery from big-data, by proposing the integration of adaptive Case Based Reasoning models, and cardinality reduction techniques based on Partial Least Squares Regression, and Principal Component Analysis. The main idea is to learn from a large database of historical climatic observations, how to solve the windforecasting problem, avoiding complex and time-consuming computations. To assess the benefits derived by the application of the proposed methodology in complex application scenarios, the experimental results obtained in a real case study will be presented and discussed.

Toxoplasma gondii, Rubella virus and Citomegalovirus are responsible for maternal-fetal infections that can cause severe consequences in fetus. The surveillance of these infections in pregnancy is made by specific antibodies detection and when necessary by demostrating the presence of the infectious agent in body fluids. We have evaluated the seroprevalence of antibodies in a cohort of 1100 pregnant women against Toxoplasma gondii, Rubella virus and Citomegalovirus. Our data show a low seroprevalence against Toxoplasma gondii, a suboptimal immunitary coverage against Rubella virus and a significative increase of incidence in Citomegalovirus infection. The study suggests the need of a multiprofessional and multidisciplinary approach for the right management of these maternal-fetal infections and underlines the pivot role played by Clinical Pathologists.
