Introducción. En 2023, Chile conmemoró 50 años de la dictadura cívico-militar en medio de un contexto de profunda relativización y negacionismo de los derechos fundamentales. Durante la revuelta de octubre de 2019 se produjeron graves violaciones a los derechos humanos ejecutadas por agentes del Estado, las que en su mayoría no han tenido cierre judicial. En este contexto, la última encuesta del Instituto Nacional de Derechos Humanos señala que la población tiene una percepción negativa respecto de la garantía y protección de los derechos humanos en el país, elemento relevante considerando tres décadas de justicia transicional y de los compromisos suscritos por el Estado chileno en materia de derechos humanos. La Educación en Derechos Humanos orientada a la creación de una cultura de respeto a los derechos fundamentales y a generar una educación de la libertad que combata todas las formas de discriminación y violencia, constituye un aspecto relevante en la formación en Trabajo Social como profesión de derechos humanos. No obstante, la literatura indica variadas dificultades en la real incorporación de este enfoque en las trayectorias formativas y proyectos educativos. Metodología. Se realizó una investigación con carácter exploratorio y cuantitativo cuyo objetivo fue indagar en las percepciones que estudiantes de la carrera de Trabajo Social de una universidad estatal del norte de Chile tenían respecto de los derechos humanos. La metodología contempló la aplicación de un cuestionario online a una muestra aleatoria simple (154 casos) con un margen de 95% de error. El instrumento se estructuró en torno a preguntas abiertas, de selección múltiple y ordinales las que posteriormente fueron procesadas y analizadas. Resultados. Los resultados indican que existe una percepción positiva sobre los derechos humanos, considerándolos una herramienta para la protección de la dignidad de las personas, asociados a conceptos como igualdad, dignidad, respeto y libertad. Sin embargo, se aprecia una percepción negativa sobre la garantía de los derechos humanos, situación que es consistente con resultados nacionales y otras encuestas de percepción realizadas en Argentina. En relación con la formación en derechos humanos, las personas que participaron valoran positivamente los conocimientos entregados en la carrera de Trabajo Social, no obstante, requieren de mayores elementos para identificar las instancias a las que recurrir al observar vulneraciones y una mayor formación en herramientas específicas para la exigibilidad. Discusión. De acuerdo con la evidencia que indica la literatura, los resultados coinciden con otros estudios que muestran una percepción favorable a los derechos humanos, identificando una serie de vulneraciones, sobre todo en los Derechos Económicos y Sociales. Así, se evidencia la necesidad de vincular la formación en derechos con la práctica cotidiana del Trabajo Social, a través de metodologías activas, para formar agentes críticos capaces de asumir la defensa y promoción de derechos. Conclusiones. Se requiere avanzar en el fortalecimiento de la Educación en Derechos Humanos en Trabajo Social, desde una mirada crítica, entregando herramientas concretas que permitan el ejercicio pleno y la garantía de derechos necesaria, considerando el contexto de racionalidad neoliberal existente en el país.

Abstract Objective To estimate the economic impact for the society, generated as a consequence of the onset of loss of vision and irreversible legal blindness, for the main ophthalmologic diseases in Spain: glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic macular edema (DME), age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and high myopia (HM). Methods A cost analysis model was developed to estimate the economic burden of glaucoma, DR, DME, AMD and HM over a 10-year time horizon (2021-2030), from a societal perspective in Spain. The epidemiological and economic parameters used in the model were obtained through a literature review. Prevalence, incidence, and progression stages were used to establish the epidemiological flows. Annual costs per patient from publications were included and classified into direct healthcare, direct non-healthcare and indirect costs. Costs from other countries were converted based on purchasing-power-parity (€EUR, PPP). Epidemiological parameters about population and cost results were validated by a panel of experts. All costs were adjusted to euros, 2021 (€, 2021), and using the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of the last 10 years, extrapolated to 2030 euros (€, 2030). Results It was estimated that the total population of patients with the main diseases pathologies (glaucoma, DR, DME, AMD and HM) will increase to 7.99 million patients by 2030, representing an increase of 103%. The total cost by 2030 of all pathologies would amount to 99.8 billion euros. Direct non-healthcare costs account for the largest item (44%), followed by loss of productivity costs (38%), and direct healthcare costs (18%). The pathologies with the highest cumulative costs will be glaucoma (€33.6 billion) and DME (€19.8 billion).The greatest increment costs compared to 2021 will likely be generated by pathologies related to diabetes mellitus, such as DR (703%) and DME (317%). Conclusions Knowing the costs associated with the pathologies that generate loss of vision and irreversible legal blindness is essential to understand the socioeconomic impact associated with these pathologies. Furthermore, the high cost of treating these diseases makes necessary to coordinate efforts between administrations, together with the support of patient associations, to meet their needs.

IntroductionThe prevalence of myopia has increased significantly in recent years including an earlier onset of myopia development on the pediatric population. The main objective of the study is to compare CUVAF (Conjunctival Ultraviolet Autofluorescence) in children with and without myopia to validate its usefulness as an outdoor protective biomarker.MethodsA case–control observational study was conducted in a child cohort from subjects that attended to the Ophthalmology Department of Clínica Universidad de Navarra for an ophthalmological examination. The general exclusion criteria were (among others): amblyopia, congenital myopia, general ophthalmic disease, and any conjunctival alteration that might difficult the measurement of the CUVAF area. All participants underwent an automatic objective refraction under cycloplegic effect, biometry to measure axial length (AL) and central corneal radius (CCR), and completed a questionnaire about their lifestyle habits. A total of 4 images of the bulbar conjunctiva were taken with blue light in order to quantify the CUVAF area.ResultsA total of 263 subjects (6 to 17 years old) were analyzed with no significant differences in demographic data between case group and control group. There were 50 non-myopic subjects (19%) and 213 myopic subjects (81%). In relation to the outdoor activities (OA), myopic subjects spent significantly fewer hours per week outdoors than the control-group (p = 0.03). About the CUVAF area, the differences between groups were statistically significant, showing that the myopic group has a significantly smaller CUVAF area than the control-group (0.33 ± 0.72 mm2 vs. 0.78 ± 1.22 mm2; p = 0.0023), likewise, the frequency of CUVAF area absence between both groups showed an odds ratio (OR) of 2.52 (CI95% 1.33–4.74). A Pearson correlation test was done, obtaining a strong significant inverse correlation between myopia degree-CUVAF area (r = 0.1877; IC95% 0.068–0.302), and also ratio (AL/CCR)-CUVAF area (p = 0.002 and p = 0.04) respectively.ConclusionCUVAF is a useful biomarker for OA and it has an inverse relationship with myopia degree also in pediatric age, especially after the age of 12, so it could be useful to differentiate the risk of developing myopia. Having a CUVAF area greater than that corresponding to age, protect to myopia 2.5 times, being almost 5 times the protection in case of high myopia.

This paper argues that the passive participles in eventive passives (what is commonly referred to as 'verbal passives') are adjectival in Spanish. Thus, there is no categorial difference between eventive and stative passives (the latter commonly known as `adjectival passives'. I show that the differences between eventive and stative passive participles, and the argument structure configurations that each type allows, can be accounted for without the need to posit a different morphological category for each type. Rather, the grammatical context in which the participle is inserted will allow for a simpler (stative) or more complex (eventive) structure for the base verb. I thus also argue against a stativization operation in stative passives: what we have is a base verb that only spells out the result state of the event, not a verb that spells out a telic structure and then is stativized by a purported higher operator.

La prevalencia y severidad del asma en niños está en aumento en diversos países del mundo, sin embargo es poco lo que se conoce en nuestro país, por lo que es importante evaluar la tendencia de esta enfermedad en Lima. El presente es un estudio epidemiológico que describe la prevalencia y severidad de síntomas sugerentes de asma en niños escolares de 13-14 años del distrito de Santiago de Surco, Lima, mediante el cuestionario estándar del lnternational Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC). Se empleó un muestreo aleatorio simple, considerando como unidad muestral a todos los colegios registrados en la USE-10. Se entrevistaron a un total de 3174 niños, siendo retirados 37 cuestionarios, por lo que el tamaño muestra! final fue de 3137 niños. Se reporta una prevalencia de asma de 26.0%; el 24% tenían el antecedente de haber sido diagnosticados por un médico alguna vez. De los 814 niños que presentaron sibilancias recurrentes, el 70.8% reportaron la presencia de asma inducida por el ejercicio y el 42.8% reportaron la presencia de tos nocturna. Finalmente el 6.7% reportaron episodios severos de broncoespasmo. Los datos que presentamos nos indican que el asma es una enfermedad altamente prevalente en Lima, que amerita nuestra atención por ser un importante problema de salud pública. Estudios posteriores podrán determinar cuáles son los factores que intervienen en su presentación.

Using a multiscale approach, we investigate the influence of measuring current on the calculated anisotropic magnetoresistance of nanostructures, derived from the magnetization configuration obtained with micromagnetic codes. We analyze the subtle implicit assumptions and potentially overlooked approximations inherent in standard procedures that largely disregard the inhomogeneous distribution of electric current within the sample and the magnetic field generated by the current itself. As a preliminary study, we review various methods for determining resistance from the calculated magnetization distribution. We then focus on the impact of non-uniform current distribution arising from variations in resistivity due to different local magnetization orientations. Finally, we assess the significance of the magnetic field produced by the measuring current. For these analyses, we develop self-consistent procedures that iteratively solve the micromagnetic problem using MuMax3 and the Laplace equation with COMSOL Multiphysics. In general, our results validate the standard approach of calculating anisotropic magnetoresistance directly from the angle of the magnetization provided by micromagnetic codes, especially for typical (small) values of the magnetoresistance coefficient. However, we demonstrate that materials with larger AMR coefficients may require more sophisticated calculation methods. An important aspect for comparison with experimental results is the analysis of electrical contacts, where the measuring current can significantly alter the magnetization distribution and, consequently, the magnetoresistance of the nanostructure, even for small AMR coefficients.

This study introduces a novel surrogate safety indicator, the ‘effective radius’, and a dynamic tracking methodology for assessing the safety of micromobility (MM) users on isolated bike lane curves, with a focus on geometric characteristics. The methodology involves six main pillars, including site selection, geometric data collection, video recording, speed and position extraction, visualization, and analysis. Naturalistic video data of bike lane users are captured to observe user behavior, and specific points along the curve centerline are identified for monitoring lateral position and speed on a selected curve site in Valencia, Spain. The analysis centers on a bidirectional bike lane featuring a sharp horizontal curve, incorporating the effective radius criteria to evaluate MM users' responses to geometry and environmental conditions. Findings reveal significant variation in effective radius, especially during left turns, primarily due to the geometry factor and the lane's positioning outside the curve. Lateral displacement heat maps indicate that left-turn users often have higher tendencies to violate dedicated lanes, posing collision risks. The speed analysis underscores potential conflicts and reduced handling capabilities for users breaching lane boundaries. The imperative need for well-informed design and safety measures in micromobility infrastructure is emphasized, considering the impact of geometric factors on user behavior and safety.

El artículo analiza la trayectoria de la carrera de Trabajo Social de la Universidad de Atacama, Chile, en materia de producción académica e investigación en temáticas socioambientales. Esta región en las últimas décadas ha tenido un aumento de conflictos en esta materia, lo que requiere avanzar en procesos formativos e investigativos que se adecúen a dicho contexto, en una región cuyo modelo extractivista ha generado disputas territoriales, entre diversos actores siendo las comunidades locales las más afectadas. Bajo una metodología de investigación documental con fuentes de carácter secundario, se describen y analizan las principales acciones y productos en el periodo 2008-2023 reflejando un sostenido aumento en la producción de investigaciones en materias socioambientales en la carrera a nivel del pregrado y desde los y las docentes adscritos/as. En conclusión, la formación en Trabajo Social y la disciplina, debe considerar la relación sociedad-naturaleza como transcendental, sobre todo cuando esta formación se realiza en y desde contextos extractivistas o zonas de sacrificio en donde todos los actores del proceso educativo son parte de dicho contexto, conviviendo cotidianamente con los efectos que esta condición produce.

Relative humidity is a crucial parameter in several fields, such as air quality monitoring, food storage, or control of industrial processes. In this study, we propose a wireless humidity sensor based on magnetoelastic resonance sensors functionalized with Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs). Different MOF water harvesters were tested as sensor active coatings: MOF-801, MOF-808, UiO-66-NH2, Al-Fumarate, and CAU-23. Their water absorption capacity and overall performance, when integrated into the sensors, were evaluated. As expected, the selected MOFs showed promising water harvesting capacity, enabling a successful sensor response to humidity in a wide range of relative humidity: 3%–85%. These humidity sensors showed a great sensitivity, stability, and selectivity to water molecules. The response time of the devices was around 15 s, with stabilization and recovery times in adsorption and desorption processes of less than 1 min for certain ranges of operation. In addition to the satisfactory behavior as humidity sensors, magnetoelastic resonators have emerged as a promising tool for the characterization of the dynamic adsorption capacity of MOF materials, as they easily provide a quantitative measure of the water mass adsorbed by the material.

BackgroundPrograms that aim to improve the detection hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) should establish which neonates suffering from perinatal asphyxia need to be monitored within the first 6 h of life.MethodAn observational prospective cohort study of infants with gestational age ≥35 weeks, and above 1,800g, were included according to their arterial cord pH value (ApH): ≤7.00 vs. 7.01–7.10. Data was collected including obstetrical history, as well as neonatal comorbidities, including the presence of HIE, that happened within 6 h of life. A standardized neurological exam was performed at discharge.ResultsThere were 9,537 births; 176 infants with ApH 7.01–7.10 and 117 infants with ApH ≤7.00. All 9 cases with moderate-to-severe HIE occurred among infants with ApH ≤7.00. The incidence of global and moderate-severe HIE was 3/1,000 and 1/1,000 births, respectively. Outcome at discharge (abnormal exam or death) showed an OR 12.03 (95% CI 1.53, 94.96) in infants with ApH ≤7.00 compared to ApH 7.01–7.10 cohort. Ventilation support was 5.1 times (95% CI 2.87, 9.03) more likely to be needed by those with cord ApH ≤7.00 compared to those with ApH 7.01–7.10, as well as hypoglycemia (37% vs. 25%; p = 0.026). In 55%, hypoglycemia occurred despite oral and/or intravenous glucose administration had been already initiated.ConclusionsCord pH 7.00 might be a safe pH cut-off point when developing protocols to monitor infants born with acidemia in order to identify infants with moderate or severe HIE early on. There is non-negligible comorbidity in the ApH ≤7.00 cohort, but also in the 7.01–7.10 cohort.

Bioequivalence (BE) studies are considered the standard for demonstrating that the performance of a generic drug product in the human body is sufficiently similar to that of its comparator product. The objective of this article is to describe the recommendations from participating Bioequivalence Working Group for Generics (BEWGG) members of the International Pharmaceutical Regulators Programme (IPRP) regarding the conduct and acceptance criteria for BE studies of immediate release solid oral dosage forms. A survey was conducted among BEWGG members regarding their BE recommendations and requirements related to study subjects, study design, sample size, single or multiple dose administration, study conditions (fasting or fed), analyte to be measured, selection of product strength, drug content, handling of endogenous substances, BE acceptance criteria, and additional design aspects. All members prefer conducting single dose cross-over designed studies in healthy subjects with a minimum of 12 subjects and utilizing the parent drug data to assess BE. However, differences emerged among the members when the drug’s pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics become more complex, such that the study design (e.g., fasting versus fed conditions) and BE acceptance criteria (e.g., highly variable drugs, narrow therapeutic index drugs) may be affected. The survey results and discussions were shared with the ICH M13 Expert Working Group (EWG) and played an important role in identifying and analyzing gaps during the harmonization process. The draft ICH M13A guideline developed by the M13 EWG was endorsed by ICH on 20 December 2022, under Step 2.

Introduction: The objective of the study was to establish the normal range for the levels of antithrombin (AT), protein C (PC), and protein S (PS) in the first week post birth in mother–infant pairings, adjusting for obstetric and perinatal factors, based on 2 different laboratory methods. Methods: Determinations were carried out in 83 healthy term neonates and their mothers, establishing 3 postpartum age groups: 1−2 days, 3 days, and 4−7 days. Results: There were no differences in the levels of any of the proteins between the different age groups in neonates or mothers in the first week post birth. Human health and well-being, and how they are affected by terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems have been the subject of numerous studies. In contrast, there are very few such studies relating to marine ecosystems. Here, in the context of the Mediterranean Sea, we assess evidence of the broad interplay of relationships between marine habitats and human health and well-being. Our review shows that the major Mediterranean marine habitats provide various provisioning, cultural and regulating services that improve physical and mental health in a number of different ways. These include: (i) the provision of seafood rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help to reduce the risk of developing certain types of illnesses; and also, species that produce bioactive compounds that are potential sources of new drugs; (ii) the provision of blue spaces – areas of water suitable for leisure and recreational activities able to inspire, educate, and appeal to the aesthetic senses – that not only increase physical and psychological health, but also foster an individual and collective sense of place and identity and contribute to improving social relations; and (iii) the regulation of climate change, and of water quality and pollution, for example via sequestration of carbon and heavy metals, thus reducing the associated health risks. Our results show that Mediterranean marine habitats are valuable for health and well-being, thus highlighting the need to conserve as much of these habitats as possible (particularly through marine protected areas) and to carry out new studies to determine the specific causal pathways by which certain characteristics of marine habitats – including biotic (e.g. marine biodiversity) and abiotic (e.g. water quality) factors – affect human health and well-being.

Urban micromobility represents a significant shift towards sustainable cities, underscoring the paramount importance of its safety. With the surge in micromobility adoption, collisions involving micromobility devices, such as bicycles and e-scooters, have surged in recent years. The second most common crash type involving these vehicles is one that only involves a micromobility vehicle (single micromobility crashes). This study analyzed 6030 single micromobility crashes that occurred in Spanish urban areas from 2016 to 2020. The Random Forest methodology was applied to create a classification model for the purpose of characterizing these crashes, predicting their injury severity, and identifying the primary influencing factors. To address the issue of imbalanced data, resulting from the relatively smaller dataset of fatal and seriously injured crashes compared to slightly injured ones, the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) was applied.The results indicate that certain behaviors, such as not wearing a helmet, riding for leisure, and instances of speeding violations, have the potential to increase injury severity. Additionally, crashes occurring at intersections or at cycle lanes with bad pavement conditions are likely to result in more severe outcomes. Furthermore, the concurrent presence of various other factors also contributes to an escalation in crash injury severity.These findings have the potential to provide valuable insights to authorities, assisting them in the decision-making process to enhance micromobility safety and thereby promoting the creation of more equitable and sustainable urban environments.

La necesidad de formar personas promotoras de desarrollo local capaces de gestionar los procesos y de realizar investigaciones comunitarias efectivas, nos motivó a realizar esta investigación. La formación de habilidades investigativas en ellas, fundamentadas desde sólidos criterios científicos sobre la base del trabajo comunitario y las habilidades a potenciar para su desempeño exitoso, han sido la base de la propuesta. Los enfoques de desarrollo local en Cuba se asumen como procesos particulares de transformaciones, las y los promotores deben ser capaces de asumir responsablemente las investigaciones y diagnósticos para lograr un acercamiento a la realidad social y a su entorno.

Abstract In the present framework of global warming, it is unclear whether evolutionary adaptation can happen quick enough to preserve the persistence of many species. Specifically, we lack knowledge about the adaptive potential of the different populations in relation to the various constraints that may hamper particular adaptations. There is evidence indicating that early flowering often provides an adaptive advantage to plants in temperate zones in response to global warming. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the adaptive potential for advancing flowering onset in Lupinus angustifolius L. (Fabaceae). Seeds from four populations from two contrasting latitudes in Spain were collected and sown in a common garden environment. Selecting the 25% of the individuals that flowered earlier in the first generation, over three generations, three different early flowering selection lines were established, involving both self‐crosses and outcrosses. All artificial selection lines advanced their flowering significantly with respect to the control line in the northernmost populations, but not in the southern ones. Selection lines obtained from outcrossing had a greater advancement in flowering than those from self‐crossing. No differences were found in the number or weight of the seeds produced between control and artificial selection lines, probably because plants in the common garden were drip irrigated. These results suggest that northern populations may have a greater adaptive potential and that southern populations may be more vulnerable in the context of climate warming. However, earlier flowering was also associated with changes in other traits (height, biomass, shoot growth, specific leaflet area, and leaflet dry matter content), and the effects of these changes varied greatly depending on the latitude of the population and selection line. Assessments of the ability of populations to cope with climate change through this and other approaches are essential to manage species and populations in a more efficient way.

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of the presence of conjunctival ultraviolet autofluorescence (CUVAF) with the level and progression of myopia and the impact of reduced sunlight exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic confinement (PC). Methods: A retrospective observational study was carried out using three cohorts, children (9–17 years old), young adults (18–25 years old), and adults (>40 years old) with myopia (≤0.75D) and at least three annual eye examinations (before and after PC). All participants underwent an automatic objective refraction and CUVAF area analysis. All the participants filled out a questionnaire regarding lifestyle and myopia history. Results: The 298 recruited participants showed that during the PC, children’s and young adults' myopia progression rate increased on average by −0.50 and −0.30 D/year, respectively, compared with the pre-pandemic level (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.01). A significantly greater progression was observed in those with low baseline myopia compared to those with moderate or high myopia (p < 0.01). CUVAF shows its protective effect associated with outdoor activity (OA) with regard to the age of onset of myopia and mean diopters (p < 0.01). In fact, although there were no differences in the increase in diopters between children with and without CUVAF during the PC, those who had CUVAF started with lower gains (−0.3 D/year) compared to those who did not (−0.5 D/year; p < 0.05). The myopia treatments (atropine drops, Ortho-K, and MiSight® contact lenses) showed a reduction effect in myopic progression rate post-PC in comparison with non-treated children (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001 and p < 0.01, respectively). Conclusions: The strict restriction of OA during PC led to the rate of myopia progression doubling among children and young adults. This progression occurred mainly in children with previously low myopia, and CUVAF, as a biomarker of OA, reflects its potential to provide benefits in the form of recommended behavioral changes to protect against the development of myopia.

Vaccination against PCV2 has been proven to be an effective measure to reduce the severity of TB in wild boar. The combination of this measure with strategies focused on treating other key concomitant pathogens, such as nematodes, could be a useful strategy. This study assesses whether a combination of deworming treatments and PCV2 vaccination may reduce the prevalence and severity of TB in wild boar. The study was conducted on five game estates in mid-western Spain where four groups of wild boar were produced: control, vaccinated, dewormed and vaccinated-dewormed. Wild boars from all groups were hunted between 2017 and 2020, and all of them received a TB diagnosis based on pathological and microbiological tests. Generalised linear models were used to explore the effect of deworming and PCV2 vaccination on TB prevalence and severity. PCV2-vaccinated animals showed lower probabilities of suffering severe TB lesions. However, no differences regarding TB severity were found between dewormed and non-dewormed wild boar. PCV2 vaccination reduces TB severity in wild boar. However, annual deworming does not produce a long-term parasitological reduction that can influence the development of TB in wild boar, nor does it improve the effect of PCV2 vaccination on TB.

The following article seeks to identify the image of the Catholic Church projected by the newspapers La Nación (Argentina), La Tercera (Chile), El Comercio (Peru), El Tiempo (Colombia), and Excélsior (Mexico) during the first ten months of the Covid-19 pandemic. In order to achieve this objective, a qualitative and quantitative analysis methodology was used in the selected journalistic texts where, based on the framing method and common places (topoi), we sought to establish the role played by the Church and religious organizations during the health crisis. The relevance of this study lies in the fact that it allows us to understand the way in which the press presented the actions of the Church during the coronavirus emergency, what were the emphases and the underlying arguments used by the media. This contributes to the analysis of the communicative processes of the Church in periods of crisis, processes that involve its authorities, the faithful and society as a whole.

The current European Union fisheries policy encourages improving handling practices to increase the survival of discards. Trawling on the Mediterranean upper slope often generates over 30% of discards of the total catch. Among other species, Nephrops norvegicus juveniles are abundantly returned to the sea, sometimes exceeding 40% of discarded biomass. N. norvegicus discard survival probability has been recently shown to be related to vitality on board and to vary seasonally, being especially low during the summer (0.06). Environmental characteristics (especially, high on-deck temperature in summer) make it necessary to improve vitality on board in order to increase discard survival. We therefore tested new discard handling methodologies for a Mediterranean mixed trawl fishery, with N. norvegicus as the target species. The results showed a survival rate on board higher than 0.8 resulting from vitality status improvements achieved by immersing N. norvegicus in cooled seawater on board during the catch selection and discard time. The implementation of this method would make an important contribution to more sustainable Mediterranean trawl fisheries.

Automated vehicles are designed to maintain both longitudinal and transverse control along a road section under certain favorable conditions. The conditions that ensure a safe operation of an automated vehicle are referred to as Operational Design Domain (ODD). So far, the concept of ODD has focused on the automated vehicle and how it is designed to operate autonomously and safely under certain conditions. However, Road Administrations and Operators would be probably more interested in formulating the concept of ODD from the road standpoint, identifying the sections that really allow an optimal and safe operation for all automated vehicles. Hence, this study introduces the concept of Operational Road Section (ORS), that is, defined as a road section, that is, compatible with all automated vehicles’ ODDs. This would result in very low disengagements of SAE Level 2 and 3 vehicles, and no disengagements at all of any SAE Level 4 vehicle, as long as their conditions do not vary. These road sections are determined as the overlapping of all the ODDs corresponding to all the automated vehicles traveling through a road segment. The concept of ORS will play a key role in the identification of the road features that promote a safe automated driving. With this information, Road Administrations and Operators could 1) establish improvement actions for extended automated operation and thus longer ORSs; and 2) manage driving restrictions to certain driving automation systems. Finally, a case study is presented showing the applicability of the ORS concept on a two-lane rural road segment.

Abstract Serious intraocular toxicity cases have been reported worldwide after the use of different perfluorocarbon liquids. The current study reports for the first-time the clinical pictures of cases of acute intraocular toxicity caused by MEROCTANE, a perfluoro-octane commercialized by a Turkish company and distributed in many countries. A series of 18 cases from Chile and Spain was retrospectively analysed. To evaluate the impurity profile, a suspicious MEROCTANE sample (lot OCT.01.2013) was analysed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry and compared with a non-suspicious sample of the same commercial perfluoro-octane (lot OCT 722011). Cytotoxicity was tested following a direct-contact method, taking into consideration the high volatility and hydrophobicity of perfluoro-octane and following the ISO 10993 guideline. Cytotoxicity test showed clear cytotoxic effects of the analysed batch (less than 9% of cell viability). Moreover, chemical analysis demonstrated the presence of many contaminants, some highly toxic (acids and alcohols). Perfluorocarbon liquids are useful tools for intraocular surgery but companies and Agencies of Medical Devices must implement measures that guarantee the safety of these products based on both chemical and cytotoxicity analysis for every batch. Medical staff should be encouraged to report any suspected case to their respective National Agencies.

Five years after the identification of Zika virus as a human teratogen, we reviewed the early clinical manifestations, collectively called congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). Children with CZS have a very poor prognosis with extremely low performance in motor, cognitive, and language development domains, and practically all feature severe forms of cerebral palsy. However, these manifestations are the tip of the iceberg, with some children presenting milder forms of deficits. Additionally, neurodevelopment can be in the normal range in the majority of the non-microcephalic children born without brain or eye abnormalities. Vertical transmission and the resulting disruption in development of the brain are much less frequent when maternal infection occurs in the second half of the pregnancy. Experimental studies have alerted to the possibility of other behavioral outcomes both in prenatally infected children and in postnatal and adult infections. Cofactors play a vital role in the development of CZS and involve genetic, environmental, nutritional, and social determinants leading to the asymmetric distribution of cases. Some of these social variables also limit access to multidisciplinary professional treatment.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of severe vision loss in older individuals in developed countries. Despite advances in our understanding of AMD, its pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been proposed to play a role in AMD development. In this study, we aimed to characterize MMP-13 in AMD. We used retinal pigment epithelial cells, a murine model of laser-induced choroidal neovascularization, and plasma samples from patients with neovascular AMD to conduct our study. Our results show that MMP13 expression significantly increased under oxidative stress conditions in cultured retinal pigment epithelial cells. In the murine model, MMP13 was overexpressed in both retinal pigment epithelial cells and endothelial cells during choroidal neovascularization. Additionally, the total MMP13 levels in the plasma of patients with neovascular AMD were significantly lower than those in the control group. This suggests a reduced diffusion from the tissues or release from circulating cells in the bloodstream, given that the number and function of monocytes have been reported to be deficient in patients with AMD. Although more studies are needed to elucidate the role of MMP13 in AMD, it could be a promising therapeutic target for treating AMD.

Climate change poses a novel threat to biodiversity that urgently requires the development of adequate conservation strategies. Living organisms respond to environmental change by migrating to locations where their ecological niche is preserved or by adapting to the new environment. While the first response has been used to develop, discuss and implement the strategy of assisted migration, facilitated adaptation is only beginning to be considered as a potential approach. Here, we present a review of the conceptual framework for facilitated adaptation, integrating advances and methodologies from different disciplines. Briefly, facilitated adaptation involves a population reinforcement that introduces beneficial alleles to enable the evolutionary adaptation of a focal population to pressing environmental conditions. To this purpose, we propose two methodological approaches. The first one (called pre-existing adaptation approach) is based on using pre-adapted genotypes existing in the focal population, in other populations, or even in closely related species. The second approach (called de novo adaptation approach) aims to generate new pre-adapted genotypes from the diversity present in the species through artificial selection. For each approach, we present a stage-by-stage procedure, with some techniques that can be used for its implementation. The associated risks and difficulties of each approach are also discussed.

The development of second-entry topical products is hampered by several factors. The excipient composition should be similar to the reference product because excipients may also contribute to efficacy. Conventional pharmacokinetic bioequivalence studies were not considered acceptable because drug concentrations are measured downstream after the site of action. There was no agreed methodology to characterize the microstructure of semisolids, and waivers of therapeutic equivalence studies with clinical endpoints were not possible. Only the vasoconstrictor assay for corticosteroids was accepted as a surrogate. This paper describes the implementation of the European Union’s stepwise approach for locally acting products to cutaneous products, discusses the equivalence requirements of the EMA Draft Guideline on the Quality and Equivalence of Topical Products, and compares them with the US Food and Drug Administration recommendations. Step 1 includes the possibility of waivers for simple formulations based on in vitro data only (Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + IVRT). Step 2 includes step 1 requirements plus a kinetic study (TS/IVPT/PKBE) to compare the local availability of complex formulations. Step 3 refers to clinical studies with pharmacodynamic/clinical endpoints. As excipients may affect the local tolerability and efficacy of the products, the similarity of excipient composition is required in all steps, except where clinical endpoints are compared.

We demonstrate how resonant planar coils may be used as sensors to detect and quantify magnetic nanoparticles reliably. A coil’s resonant frequency depends on the adjacent materials’ magnetic permeability and electric permittivity. A small number of nanoparticles dispersed on a supporting matrix on top of a planar coil circuit may thus be quantified. Such nanoparticle detection has application detection to create new devices to assess biomedicine, food quality assurance, and environmental control challenges. We developed a mathematical model for the inductive sensor response at radio frequencies to obtain the nanoparticles’ mass from the self-resonance frequency of the coil. In the model, the calibration parameters only depend on the refraction index of the material around the coil, not on the separate magnetic permeability and electric permittivity. The model compares favourably with three-dimensional electromagnetic simulations and independent experimental measurements. The sensor can be scaled and automated in portable devices to measure small quantities of nanoparticles at a low cost. The resonant sensor combined with the mathematical model is a significant improvement over simple inductive sensors, which operate at smaller frequencies and do not have the required sensitivity, and oscillator-based inductive sensors, which focus on just magnetic permeability.

Se realiza un análisis sobre la empleabilidad, la situación del empleo en los graduados universitarios en las diversas carreras y las problemáticas reales para encontrar empleo acorde con los estudios realizados, en aras de lograr un posicionamiento laboral estable, reconocido y valorado por la sociedad y el ser humano. Se concreta entonces la relación entre la empleabilidad de los graduados universitarios y la realidad socioeconómica imperante que dominan este aspecto social de tanto interés en nuestra sociedad.

Retinal Müller glial cells (MGs) are among the first to demonstrate metabolic changes during retinal disease and are a potential source of regenerative cells. In response to a harmful stimulus, they can dedifferentiate acquiring neural stem cells properties, proliferate and migrate to the damaged retinal layer and differentiate into lost neurons. However, it is not yet known how this reprogramming process is regulated in mammals. Since glucose and oxygen are important regulatory elements that may help directing stem cell fate, we aimed to study the effect of glucose variations and oxidative stress in Müller cells reprogramming capacity and analyze the participation the histone deacetylase SIRT6, as an epigenetic modulator of this process. We found that the combination of high glucose and oxidative stress induced a decrease in the levels of the marker glutamine synthetase, and an increase in the migration capacity of the cells suggesting that these experimental conditions could induce some degree of dedifferentiation and favor the migration ability. High glucose induced an increase in the levels of the pluripotent factor SOX9 and a decrease in SIRT6 levels accompanied by the increase in the acetylation levels of H3K9. Inhibiting SIRT6 expression by siRNA rendered an increase in SOX9 levels. We also determined SOX9 levels in retinas from mice with a conditional deletion of SIRT6 in the CNS. To further understand the mechanisms that regulate MGs response under metabolic impaired conditions, we evaluated the gene expression profile and performed Gene Ontology enrichment analysis of Müller cells from a murine model of Diabetes. We found several differentially expressed genes and observed that the transcriptomic change involved the enrichment of genes associated with glucose metabolism, cell migration, development and pluripotency. We found that many functional categories affected in cells of diabetic animals were directly related to SIRT6 function. Transcription factors enrichment analysis allowed us to predict several factors, including SOX9, that may be involved in the modulation of the differential expression program observed in diabetic MGs. Our results underline the heterogeneity of Müller cells response and the challenge that the study of metabolic impairment in vivo represents.

El nivel de atención de un estudiante en su entorno escolar está relacionado con diferentes variables fisiológicas del cuerpo humano. El estudio de las señales fisiológicas relacionadas con el nivel de atención como ondas cerebrales, frecuencia cardíaca, entre otros, ha revelado grandes avances en los últimos tiempos. En este trabajo se presenta el desarrollo de un sistema para medir la atención en tiempo real y de forma cuantitativa. Las variables sensadas para poder determinar el nivel de atención del usuario son: Las ondas cerebrales tipo beta y dos ángulos que describen la postura corporal del estudiante. Se busca la correlación el porcentaje de atención que se obtiene de las ondas cerebrales, con los ángulos obtenidos de la postura corporal a través de un análisis matemático. El coeficiente de correlación resultante denota que la postura corporal puede considerarse como un parámetro que influye en el nivel de atención de los estudiantes.

(1) Background: this article investigates which PK metrics in a single-dose study (concentration at the end of posology interval, Cτ, partial areas under the curve, pAUCs, or half-value duration, HVD) are more sensitive and less variable for predicting the failure of a prolonged-release product at steady-state that was the bioequivalent for Cmax, AUC0-t and AUC0-inf, in the single-dose study; (2) Methods: a cross-over study was performed in 36 subjects receiving desvenlafaxine 100 mg prolonged-release tablets. Conventional (Cmax, AUC0-t and AUC0-inf) and additional (Cτ, pAUCs and HVD) PK metrics were considered after single-dose conditions. Predicted PK metrics at steady state (AUC0-τ, Cmax,ss, and Cτ,ss) were derived using a population PK model approach; (3) Results: the existing differences in the shape of the concentration–time curves precluded to show equivalence for Cτ,ss in the simulated study at steady state. This failure to show equivalence at steady state was predicted by Cτ, pAUCs and HVD in the single-dose study. Cτ was the most sensitive metric for detecting the different shape, with a lower intra-subject variability than HVD; (4) Conclusions: conventional PK metrics for single-dose studies (Cmax, AUC0-t and AUC0-inf) are not enough to guarantee bioequivalence at steady state for prolonged-release products.

Background Acute bacterial conjunctivitis (ABC) is a relatively common medical condition caused by different pathogens. Although it rarely threatens vision, it is one of the most common conditions that cause red eyes and may be accompanied by discomfort and discharge. The study aimed to identify and characterize inpatients with ABC treated with topical antibiotics. Methods The EHRead® technology, based on natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning, was used to extract and analyze the clinical information in the electronic health records (EHRs) of antibiotic-treated patients with conjunctivitis and admitted to five hospitals in Spain between January 2014 and December 2018. Categorical variables were described by frequency, whereas numerical variables included the mean, standard deviation, median, and quartiles. Results From a source population of 2,071,812 adult patients who attended the participating hospitals in the study period, 11,110 patients diagnosed with acute conjunctivitis were identified. Six thousand five hundred eighty-three patients were treated with antibiotics, comprising the final study population. Microbiology was tested only on 12.1% of patients. Antibiotics, mainly tobramycin, and corticosteroids, mainly dexamethasone, were usually prescribed. NSAIDs were also used in about 50% of patients, always combined with antibiotics. Conclusions The present study provided a realistic representation of the hospital practice concerning managing patients with acute antibiotic-treated conjunctivitis. The diagnosis is usually based on the clinical ground, microbiology is rarely tested, few bacteria species are involved, and local antibiotics are frequently associated with corticosteroids and/or NSAIDs. Moreover, this study provided clinically relevant outcomes, based on new technology, that could be applied in clinical practice.

Some years ago, excipients were considered inert substances irrelevant in the absorption process. However, years of study have demonstrated that this belief is not always true. In this study, the reasons for a bioequivalence failure between two formulations of silodosin are investigated. Silodosin is a class III drug according to the Biopharmaceutics Classification System, which has been experimentally proven by means of solubility and permeability experiments. Dissolution tests have been performed to identify conditions concordant with the non-bioequivalent result obtained from the human bioequivalence study and it has been observed that paddles at 50 rpm are able to detect inconsistent differences between formulations at pH 4.5 and pH 6.8 (which baskets at 100 rpm are not able to do), whereas the GIS detects differences at the acidic pH of the stomach. It has also been observed that the differences in excipients between products did not affect the disintegration process, but disintegrants did alter the permeability of silodosin through the gastrointestinal barrier. Crospovidone and povidone, both derivatives of PVP, are used as disintegrants in the test product, instead of the pregelatinized corn starch used in the reference product. Permeability experiments show that PVP increases the absorption of silodosin—an increase that would explain the greater Cmax observed for the test product in the bioequivalence study.

This article describes an overview of waivers of in vivo bioequivalence studies for additional strengths in the context of the registration of modified release generic products and is a follow-up to the recent publication for the immediate release solid oral dosage forms. The current paper is based on a survey among the participating members of the Bioequivalence Working Group for Generics (BEWGG) of the International Pharmaceutical Regulators Program (IPRP) regarding this topic. Most jurisdictions consider the extrapolation of bioequivalence results obtained with one (most sensitive) strength of a product series as less straightforward for modified release products than for immediate release products. There is consensus that modified release products should demonstrate bioequivalence not only in the fasted state but also in the fed state, but differences exist regarding the necessity of additional multiple dose studies. Fundamental differences between jurisdictions are revealed regarding requirements on the quantitative composition of different strengths and the differentiation of single and multiple unit dosage forms. Differences in terms of in vitro dissolution requirements are obvious, though these are mostly related to possible additional comparative investigations rather than regarding the need for product-specific methods. As with the requirements for immediate release products, harmonization of the various regulations for modified release products is highly desirable to conduct the appropriate studies from a scientific point of view, thus ensuring therapeutic equivalence.

Obesity is a serious health problem that has increased in recent decades. It is a chronic disease responsible for serious physical, psychological and social problems, reaching to alter the quality of life of people who suffer from it. Bariatric surgery is the best treatment for obesity even in its most severe levels, since in addition to reducing excess weight, it achieves a high rate of improvement and remission of metabolic comorbidities, improving the quality and expectation of life of the operated patients. Within bariatric procedures, laparoscopic gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy are the most performed worldwide. Quality of life is defined as, the perception that the obese person has of their physical, psychological, and social limitations and the reduction of opportunities. The success of the surgery consists of changing the quality of life of the patient. The results should not be evaluated only according to the initial loss or late weight gain, complications or sequelae of one or another technique or the subsequent need for cosmetic surgery, but a series of factors derived from the patients themselves should be taken into account, which together define the quality of life and even the cost / benefit ratio.

Bioequivalence (BE) of products containing narrow therapeutic index (NTI) drugs in the European Union is currently established by demonstrating that the 90% confidence interval for the ratio of the population geometric means of the test compared to the reference product’s AUC, and in certain cases Cmax, is included within the tighter acceptance range of 90.00–111.11%. An alternative criterion, consisting of narrowed limits based on the within-subject variability of the reference product, was recently proposed. Its performance for a three-period partial replicate design was tested by simulation in terms of power to show BE, type I error (T1E) and sample size requirements. A new condition, a constraint on the test-to-reference geometric mean ratio (cGMR) to be contained within the range of 90.00–111.11%, was also tested. The probability of showing BE when the products differ more than 10% was increased, but only if the reference product’s within-subject variability was moderate-to-high. In recent years, cities are experiencing changes in the ways of moving around, increasing the use of micromobility vehicles. Bicycles are the most widespread transport mode and, therefore, cyclists’ behaviour, safety, and comfort have been widely studied. However, the use of other personal mobility vehicles is increasing, especially e-scooters, and related studies are scarce. This paper proposes a low-cost open-source data acquisition system to be installed on an e-scooter. This system is based on Raspberry Pi and allows collecting speed, acceleration, and position of the e-scooter, the lateral clearance during meeting and overtaking manoeuvres, and the vibrations experienced by the micromobility users when riding on a bike lane. The system has been evaluated and tested on a bike lane segment to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the collected data. As a result, the use of the proposed system allows highway engineers and urban mobility planners to analyse the behaviour, safety, and comfort of the users of e-scooters. Additionally, the system can be easily adapted to another micromobility vehicle and used to assess pavement condition and micromobility users’ riding comfort on a cycling network when the budget is limited.

Many species cannot either migrate or adapt at the rate of temperature increases due to climate warming. Therefore, they need active conservation strategies to avoid extinction. Facilitated adaptation actions, such assisted gene flow, aim at the increase of the evolutionary resilience of species affected by global change. In elevational gradients, marginal populations at the lower elevation edges are experiencing earlier snowmelt and higher temperatures, which force them to adapt to the new conditions by modifying their phenology. In this context, advancing the onset of flowering and seed germination times are crucial to ensure reproductive success and increase seedling survival prior to summer drought. Assisted gene flow may bring adaptive alleles and increase genetic diversity that can help throughout ontogeny. The main aim of this work is to assess the effects that different gene flow treatments could have on the desired trait changes in marginal populations. Accordingly, we established a common garden experiment in which we assayed four different gene flow treatments between Silene ciliata Pourr. (Caryophyllaceae) populations located in similar and different elevation edges, belonging to the same and different mountains. As a control treatment, within-population crosses of low elevation edge populations were performed. The resulting seeds were sown and the germination and flowering onset dates of the resulting plants recorded, as well as the seedling survival. Gene flow between populations falling on the same mountain and same elevation and gene flow from high-elevation populations from a different mountain to low-elevation populations advanced seed germination time with respect to control crosses. No significant effects of gene flow on seedling survival were found. All the gene flow treatments delayed the onset of flowering with respect to control crosses and this effect was more pronounced in among-mountain gene flows. The results of this study highlight two important issues that should be thoroughly studied before attempting to apply assisted gene flow in practical conservation situations. Firstly, among-populations gene flow can trigger different responses in crucial traits throughout the ontogeny of plant species. Secondly, the population provenance of gene flow is determinant and plays a significant role on the effects of gene flow.

Purpose: Albendazole is a benzimidazole carbamate drug with anthelmintic and antiprotozoal activity against intestinal and tissue parasites. It has been described that the administration with meals increases albendazole absorption. Our aim was to compare the systemic exposure in healthy volunteers of two albendazole formulations after a single oral dose under fed conditions and to evaluate the effect of breakfast composition on albendazole and albendazole sulfoxide bioavailability.Methods: 12 healthy volunteers were included in a 4-period, 4-sequence, crossover, open, randomized, bioequivalence clinical trial, including two stages to compare two formulations of albendazole. Single oral doses of 400 mg albendazole were administered under fed conditions (a low-fat breakfast in first stage and a high-fat breakfast in the second) separated by 7-day washout periods. Plasma albendazole and albendazole sulfoxide concentrations were measured by HPLC-MS/MS.Findings: Albendazole absorption was clearly influenced by the meal composition. A high-fat breakfast increased albendazole and albendazole sulfoxide area under the concentration–time curve (AUC) and maximum concentration (Cmax) by double, compared to a low-fat breakfast. The bioavailability of the two formulations was very similar, although the sample size was not sufficient to demonstrate bioequivalence because the intraindividual variability of albendazole was approximately 60%.Implications: The higher albendazole and albendazole sulfoxide levels when administered with a high-fat meal could be of importance in clinical practice. Since albendazole labeling recommends its administration with meals, it is necessary to insist on taking it with a fatty meal so that the effectiveness of albendazole is not compromised.

The aim of this study was to characterize methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCoNS) isolates from the healthy staff of a university veterinary hospital in order to assess their importance as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance and to determine their population structure and evolution. The study duration was over two years (2020–2021), 94 individuals were analyzed in duplicate, and 78 strains were obtained. The overall prevalence of methicillin-resistant strains detected throughout the study was 61.7%, with point prevalence values of 53.2% in 2020 and 31.5% in 2021. A total of 19.1% of the individuals analyzed were carriers throughout the study. The most frequently identified MRCoNs were Staphylococcus epidermidis (92.3%) and S. warneri (3.8%). A total of 75.6% of the isolates obtained showed the development of multi-resistance, preferentially against erythromycin, gentamicin, and tetracycline, and to a lesser extent against fusidic acid, norfloxacin, and clindamycin; these antimicrobials are frequently used in the veterinary field. Although most of the S. epidermidis isolates obtained showed wide genetic variability and low dispersion, which are characteristic of community-associated isolates, a small number of strains spread between individuals in close physical proximity and were maintained over time, forming stable clones. These clones generally maintained the same type of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) and had a similar antimicrobial resistance pattern.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is currently the main cause of severe visual loss among older adults in developed countries. The pathophysiology has not been clarified, but oxidative stress is believed to play a major role. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) may play a prominent role in several steps of the pathophysiology of AMD, especially in its neovascular form; therefore, there is of great interest in understanding their role in choroidal neovascularisation. This study aimed to elucidate the role of MMP10 in the development of choroidal neovascularisation (CNV). We have demonstrated that MMP10 was expressed by retinal pigment epithelium cells and endothelial cells of the neovascular membrane, in cell culture, mouse and human retina. MMP10 expression and activity increased under oxidative stress conditions in ARPE-19 cells. MMP10-/- mice developed smaller laser-induced areas of CNV. Furthermore, to exclude a systemic MMP10 imbalance in these patients, plasma MMP10 concentrations were assessed in an age- and sex-matched sample of 52 control patients and 52 patients with neovascular AMD and no significant differences were found between the groups, demonstrating that MMP10 induction is a local phenomenon. Our findings suggest that MMP10 participates in the development of choroidal neovascularisation and promotes MMP10 as a possible new therapeutic target.

Wetlands are ecosystems characterized by a high level of biodiversity and among those most under threat from human activities. Tintal (seasonally inundated forest dominated by Haematoxylum campechianum L.) are a characteristic wetland of the Yucatan Peninsula, and have a long history of commercial exploitation. In both conserved and human-disturbed wetlands, differences in relation to species richness, diversity and degree of specialization are expected. The objectives of this study were to analyze the variations in the richness and abundance between preserved and human-disturbed tintales, and to identify relationships between the characteristics of the epiphyte assemblage and the tintal assemblage. The study was carried out at 21 tintal sites in the Yucatan Peninsula, 10 preserved and 11 human-disturbed. At each sampled tintal sites, two 100 × 8 m (800 m2) transects were randomly plotted, in which the vascular epiphytes were quantified and identified. All the phorophytes (any plant on which an epiphyte grows) within the transects were divided into three microsites (low and middle trunk section, and branches), and all vascular epiphytes were recorded in each one of these microsites. Species-accumulation curves, dominance-diversity graph, Hill series diversity indices and species richness were calculated. Similarity matrices were calculated taking into account the relative abundance and the presence absence of the species, and a similarity analysis was performed. To assess the effect of the three microsites and the conservation status of tintales a generalized linear model was applied. The similarity matrices between locations for vascular epiphytes and phorophytes were correlated. The richness and abundance of vascular epiphyte species were related to degree of conservation but not with the richness, evenness, density, average DBH and average height of forophytes. A total of 55 taxa of vascular epiphytes (51 angiosperms, 4 ferns), 12 families and 7051 individuals were registered. The Orchidaceae family was the best represented (26 species, 3225 individuals). In preserved tintales, 6396 individuals (90.71% of the total), belonging to 49 taxa and 9 families were recorded. There is a similarity of 45.07% between both types of tintales. The preferred microsite in preserved and human-disturbed tintales was the branches (47 species; 5262 individuals). The most abundant species of tree was H. campechianum (62.84% of the total). The tintales can be important reservoirs of vascular epiphytes (richness and abundance) and they can function as islands and sources of diversity in degraded land matrices. In addition to working on the restoration of disturbed tintales, it is also essential to protect preserved tintales, considering the ecological importance of the latter. The tree species H. campechianum must be considered as a key species in this ecosystem.

This study surveyed the dental health of three Costa Rican indigenous populations and two rural, non-indigenous communities. Sixty-six individuals, both children and adults, were interviewed regarding dental hygiene practices and the dentition of eighty-eight children from the ages of two to thirteen was examined. The indigenous populations, on average, showed a more important number of anterior dental pathologies as compared to a non-indigenous group (42% vs 20%). Collectively, both access to and utilization of dental healthcare were worse within the indigenous communities; however, there was still great variation amongst all five sites.

Objective: To know the distribution of births of very low birth weight infants by day of the week, and whether this distribution affects the morbidity and mortality in this group of patients. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of data collected prospectively in the Spanish SEN1500 network (2002–2011). Outborn infants, patients with major congenital anomalies, and those who died in the delivery room were excluded. Births were grouped into “weekdays” and “weekends.” A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the independent effect of the birth moment on outcomes, and Cox regression for survival. Results: Out of a total of 27,205 very low birth weight infants born at and/or admitted to the participating centers, 22,961 (84.4%) met inclusion criteria. A reduction of 24% in the number of births was observed during the “weekends” compared with “weekdays”. Este artículo estudia el efecto de referencia disjunta en construcciones pasivas con ser y estar, que consiste en la imposibilidad de tener una lectura reflexiva. Muestro, basándome en un estudio empírico realizado a hablantes de castellano peninsular, que dicho efecto se produce en la pasiva con ser pero no en la pasiva con estar, y desarrollo una propuesta teórica para dar cuenta de los datos. Mi estudio contribuye a una comprensión más completa de las propiedades de los participios pasivos con ser y estar en español, y constituye una aportación al estudio actual de las pasivas verbales y adjetivales en diferentes lenguas.

Resumen: Introducción: La incidencia de la encefalopatía hipóxico-isquémica perinatal (EHI) y la implementación de la hipotermia terapéutica (HT) es desconocida en España. Método: Estudio transversal nacional en recién nacidos vivos (RNV) ≥ 35 semanas de gestación mediante cuestionario on-line en las 90 unidades neonatales de nivel iii. Se solicitaron datos de los RNV con EHI moderada-grave en los años 2012 y 2013, y de la implementación de la HT en junio del 2015. Resultados: Se recibieron datos de los 90 hospitales. La incidencia de EHI moderada-grave fue 0,77/1.000 RNV (IC del 95%, 0,72; 0,83). El 86% de los RNV con EHI recibieron HT (activa o pasiva), aumentando los que recibieron HT activa del 78% en 2012 al 85% en 2013 (p = 0,01). El 14% no recibió HT principalmente por retraso en el diagnóstico o en el traslado, o por no indicarse el tratamiento. El 57% de los RN nació en hospitales sin HT, siendo el traslado en hipotermia pasiva; en el 39% por equipos sin formación adecuada. En junio del 2015, 57/90 centros realizaban HT: 54 HT corporal total activa (todos con dispositivos servocontrolados). Existió heterogeneidad en la distribución por comunidades autónomas (CC. AA.) de centros con HT activa y en el número de RN que recibieron HT. Conclusiones: La incidencia de EHI moderada-grave es homogénea entre CC. AA. Aunque se constata un importante progreso en la implementación de la HT, es preciso mejorar la disponibilidad de HT activa entre CC. AA., así como el diagnóstico precoz y el traslado con garantías desde los centros emisores. Abstract: Introduction: There are no data on the incidence of hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) and the implementation of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) in Spain. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, national study, performed using an on-line questionnaire targeting level III neonatal care units in Spain. Participants were requested to provide data of all newborns ≥ 35 weeks of gestational age diagnosed with moderate-severe HIE over a two year-period (2012-2013), and of the implementation of TH up to June 2015. Results: All (90) contacted hospitals participated. HIE incidence rate was 0.77/1000 live newborns (95% CI 0.72 - 0.83). During 2012-2013, 86% of the newborns diagnosed with moderate-severe HIE received TH (active or passive). Active TH was increasingly used, from 78% in 2012 to 85% in 2013 (P=.01). Of the 14% that did not receive TH, it was mainly due to a delay in the diagnosis or inter-hospital transfer, and to the fact that the treatment was not offered. More than half (57%) were born in hospitals where TH was not provided, and passive hypothermia was used for inter-hospital patient transfer, and in 39% of the cases by inappropriately trained personnel. By June 2015, 57 out of 90 centres had implemented TH, of which 54 performed whole-body TH (using servo-controlled devices). The geographical distribution of centres with active TH, and the number of newborn that received TH, was heterogeneous. Conclusions: The incidence of moderate-severe HIE is homogeneous across Spanish territory. Significant progress is being made in the implementation of TH, however it is necessary to increase the availability of active TH between Autonomous Communities, to improve early diagnosis, and to guarantee high quality patient transfer to referral centres.
