Nonlinear phononic materials enable superior wave responses by combining nonlinearity with their inherent periodicity, creating opportunities for the development of novel acoustic devices. However, the field has largely focused on reversible nonlinearities, whereas the role of hysteretic nonlinearity remains unexplored. In this work, we investigate nonlinear shear wave responses arising from the hysteretic nonlinearity of frictional rough contacts, and harness these responses to enable programmable functions. By using a numerical approach, we solve the strongly nonlinear problem of shear wave propagation through a single contact and a periodic array of contacts, accounting for frictional effects. Specifically, the Jenkin friction model with experimentally obtained properties is used to capture the effects of stick–slip transition at the contacts. Results show that friction gives rise to shear-polarized eigenstrains, which are residual static deformations within the system. We then demonstrate how eigenstrain generation in multiple contacts can enable programmable functionalities such as an acoustically controlled mechanical switch, precision position control, and surface reconfigurability. Overall, our findings open new avenues for designing smart materials and devices with advanced functionalities via acoustic waves using the hysteretic nonlinearity of frictional contacts.

Contacting interfaces provide frictional damping in jointed structures subjected to high dynamic loads. Predicting this frictional damping during vibration cycles is highly important since it strongly affects the dynamic response of the assembly and hence the lifetime of parts. Since frictional damping is heavily influenced by the contact condition at the interface, the most direct and insightful approach is thereby to actively monitor the contact interface. Although several methods have already been proposed to monitor the contact interfaces quasi-statically or in pre-sliding, such as digital image correlation, X-Ray and ultrasound, only limited data is available of the frictional interface behaviour during high frequency vibration. To provide a better insight into the contact interface behaviour during high frequency cyclic motion, an optical method is here developed based on transparent friction specimens and total internal reflection, and applied to an existing friction test rig. The resulting measurements across the whole interface show a large variation in the real area of contact during each vibration cycle, which could be linked to the kinematics of the contact interface. This large variation is observed for the first time in high frequency oscillating contacts and is attributed to ageing effect and fracture of asperities. These two effects dominate the contact mechanism at different sliding velocities and induce variations in the real area of contact during each vibration cycle. These results suggest that the mechanisms behind high frequency contact behaviour are more complex than what commonly assumed in dynamics simulations.

Incorporating nonlinearity in periodic media not only enables enriched wave dynamics but also allows passive tunability of the wave responses. However, studies so far have been mostly focused on nonlinear mechanisms and responses of longitudinal wave propagation whereas shear propagation in the presence of strong nonlinearity is yet to be fully understood. In this talk, we study shear wave propagation through metamaterials with rough contacts including friction. The roughness of contacting surfaces results in structural instability causing the contacts to switch between different regimes—stick, partial slip, and gross slip—giving rise to strong nonlinearity. Moreover, due to the presence of friction, the contacts exhibit hysteretic nonlinearity, i.e., history-dependent response. In this study, we first experimentally evaluate the frictional properties of rough contacts by measuring high-frequency friction hysteresis loops. Then, we develop metamaterial with a periodic arrangement of these rough contacts and use the obtained frictional properties to numerically study nonlinear shear wave signatures. We evaluate higher harmonic generation and demonstrate how they can be tuned through excitation wave amplitude, external precompression, and surface roughness. These fundamental understandings can open new avenues for designing tailored material with memory-dependent nonlinearity for controlling shear wave propagation.

Underplatform dampers are widely used in turbomachinery to mitigate structural vibrations by means of friction dissipation at the interfaces. The modelling of such friction dissipation is challenging because of the high variability observed in experimental measurements of contact parameters. Although this variability is not commonly accounted for in state-of-the-art numerical solvers, probabilistic approaches can be implemented to include it in dynamics simulations in order to significantly improve the estimation of the damper performance. The aim of this work is to obtain uncertainty bands in the dynamic response of turbine blades equipped with dampers by including the variability observed in interfacial contact parameters. This variability is experimentally quantified from a friction rig and used to generate uncertainty bands by combining a deterministic state-of-the-art numerical solver with stochastic Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE) models. The bands thus obtained are validated against experimental data from an underplatform damper test rig. In addition, the PCEs are also employed to perform a variance-based global sensitivity analysis to quantify the influence of contact parameters on the variation in the nonlinear dynamic response via Sobol indices. The analysis highlights that the influence of each contact parameter in vibration amplitude strongly varies over the frequency range, and that Sobol indices can be effectively used to analyse uncertainties associated to structures with friction interfaces providing valuable insights into the physics of such complex nonlinear systems.

Dry friction in contact interfaces can have an important impact on the dynamic response of jointed structures subjected to vibration. It may cause frettingwear leading to a modification of the contact surface geometry by producing wear debris through material removal and dissipating energy. Consequently, the contact behaviour is modified and the worn geometry induces a change in vibrations level. Therefore, it is important to be able to simulate these complex phenomena occurring at the interfaces to predict the forced response of assembled structures and also their life-expectancy to design high confidence components. A multi-scale approach is implemented considering a slow-scale for wear phenomena and a fast-scale for the non-linear dynamic response and applied to validate an experimental test.

The tangential contact stiffness is an important parameter used in non-linear dynamic analyses of jointed structures since it can strongly affect the prediction of resonance frequencies. Many experimental techniques are available for contact stiffness estimations, but the reliability of such estimations remains unknown due to a lack of comparative studies. This paper proposes a comparative study of contact stiffness measurements obtained with two experimental techniques: hysteresis loop measurements and Frequency Based Substructuring (FBS). Hysteresis loops are traditionally measured with dedicated friction test rigs to provide, amongst others, contact stiffness estimations through local interface measurements. The assumption with hysteresis measurements is that the measured parameters are independent of the dynamics of the test rig and can therefore be used as input for analyses of other structures, as long as loading conditions and contact interfaces are comparable. An alternative approach to identify the contact stiffness is FBS, which uses information from the overall system dynamics. FBS has the advantage that it can be applied to any structure, without the need of building ad-hoc test rigs, consequently giving a structure-specific information. Despite this advantage over hysteresis measurements, it is as of yet not well understood how accurately FBS can extract contact stiffness values. This paper presents FBS measurements and hysteresis loop measurements performed simultaneously on the same contact interface of a traditional high-frequency friction rig during vibration, thus enabling a cross-validation of the results of both techniques. This novel comparison validates FBS approaches against local hysteresis measurements and shows the strengths and limitations of both experimental methods, making it possible to improve the current understanding of the contact stiffness of jointed structures.

Frictional contacts are a major source of uncertainty in the correct prediction of the dynamic response of built-up structures. This uncertainty is partially due to a limited understanding of the effects of friction on dynamic responses. Vice versa, dynamic responses can also affect the frictional behaviour of the interfaces in contact. In the present study, the mutual relationships between frictional behaviour and structural dynamics are investigated by means of a high frequency friction rig. The rig is characterised by a simple and localised frictional contact that is needed to accurately measure hysteresis loops. Of course, the rig also has its own dynamic response, and consequently represents an excellent test case to gain a better understanding of the correlation between hysteresis loop shapes and their effect upon the dynamics. Impact hammer tests and shaker tests were performed on the friction rig, and lead to changes in the damping and stiffness of its dynamic response, which were linked to variations in the frictional behaviour of the contact. Furthermore, there was some indication as to how certain resonances of the system might strongly affect the frictional behaviour. In particular, it was observed that full sliding causes excitation of structural modes that in turn lead to distortions in the measured hysteresis loops. These findings confirm the strong relationship between friction and dynamics, thus highlighting the necessity to include a detailed frictional description of contacting interfaces for more accurate modelling of the dynamics of built-up structures.

Friction joints are one of the fundamental means used for the assembly of structural components in engineering applications. The structural dynamics of these components becomes nonlinear, due to the nonlinear nature of the forces arising at the contact interface characterised by stick-slip phenomena and separation. Advanced numerical models have been proposed in the last decades which have shown some promising capabilities in capturing these local nonlinearities. However, despite the research efforts in producing more advanced models over the years, a lack of validation experiments made it difficult to have fully validated models. For this reason, experimental techniques which can provide insights into the local dynamics of joints can be of great interest for the refinement of such models and for the optimisation of the joint design and local wear predictions. In this paper, a preliminary study is presented where ultrasound waves are used to characterise the local dynamics of friction contacts by observing changes of the ultrasound reflection/transmission at the friction interface. The experimental technique is applied to a dynamic friction rig, where two steel specimens are rubbed against each other under a harmonic tangential excitation. Initial results show that, with a controlled experimental test procedure, this technique can identify microslip effects at the contact interface.

This paper investigates the effects of fretting wear on frictional contacts. A high frequency friction rig is used to measure the evolution of hysteresis loops, friction coefficient and tangential contact stiffness over time. This evolution of the contact parameters is linked to significant changes in natural frequencies and damping of the rig. Hysteresis loops are replicated by using a Bouc-Wen modified formulation, which includes wear to simulate the evolution of contact parameters and to model the evolving dynamic behaviour of the rig. A comparison of the measured and predicted dynamic behaviour demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed approach and highlights the need to consider wear to accurately capture the dynamic response of a system with frictional joints over its lifetime.

International audience; This paper deals with the dynamic of blades with strip dampers. The purpose is 1) to present the results of the dynamic numerical calculation, 2) to demonstrate the need for the experimental data on the blade-strip contact to be used as input to the calculation, 3) to propose a new test rig design to obtain them and 4) to test the key components of the new test rig. The forced responses of two blades coupled by a strip damper are calculated at different excitation and centrifugal force values. The dependence of the numerical results on the contact parameter values is confirmed in this significant reference case. The design of a new test rig is then proposed: both the blade frequency response function and the contact hysteresis cycles at the blade-strip contact are measured. It is shown how contact parameters can then be derived from experimental data. The main novelty of the test rig here proposed is the strip loading system, which simulates the uniform pressure distribution provided by the centrifugal force in real operating conditions. This loading system is non-contact and uses compressed air. Classical loading systems which see dead weights directly connected to the strip are assessed and their expected inadequacy is confirmed. The compressed air system is tested by measuring the pressure produced between strip and blades: pressure is uniform across the contact patch, constant in time and its mean value corresponds to realistic pressure values actually experienced by strip dampers during service.

International audience; This paper focuses on flexible friction dampers (or "strips") mounted on the underside of adjacent turbine blade platforms for sealing and damping purposes. A key parameter to ensure a robust and trustworthy design is the correct prediction of the maximum frequency shift induced by the strip damper coupling adjacent blades. While this topic has been extensively addressed on rigid friction dampers, both experimentally and numerically, no such investigation is available as far as flexible dampers are concerned. This paper builds on the authors' prior experience with rigid dampers to investigate the peculiarities and challenges of a robust dynamic model of blade-strips systems. The starting point is a numerical tool implementing state-of-the-art techniques for the efficient solution of the nonlinear equations, e.g., multi-harmonic balance method with coupled static solution and state-of-the-art contact elements. The full step-by-step modelling process is here retraced and upgraded to take into account the damper flexibility: for each step, key modelling choices (e.g., mesh size, master nodes selection, contact parameters) which may affect the predicted response are addressed. The outcome is a series of guidelines which will help the designer assign numerical predictions the proper level of trust and outline a much-needed experimental campaign.

Part 8: Modular Design and Products; International audience; In business to business manufacturing, a major competitive advantage comes from the personalization of the product for the customer. In order to customize a product, companies go through a long process of customer interviews and specialized product development processes: this results in a time-consuming design phase and in a highly variable production process. In this paper, a method to improve the efficiency of product development and manufacturing, keeping a high degree of customization, is presented. A standardization effort is performed to identify a set of interchangeable components and to define a set of functional constraints. The consequences of such standardization are a dramatic reduction of the time expected to design and produce an item, as well as in lowered degree of variability of both the manufacturing process and the warehouses content. The presented methodology has been applied to a manufacturer of ink dispensing systems.
