Elwyn Richardson's experimental approach to teaching and learning and Oruaiti was officially sanctioned, but the history of education in Aotearoa/New Zealand shows that teachers have been typically conformist. In this article, I suggest that positivist paradigms from the industrial age continue to shape classroom teaching, partly because of norms of individualism, and partly because neoliberal understandings have become central in the functioning of our schools and society. Teaching is an activity that promotes the ethics of a community or society by promulgating some ideas and marginalising others. In Aotearoa/New Zealand, many of our students struggle with the collective orientation of their community traditions and the societal emphasis on individualism. Modernist beliefs in social progress through technology still permeate education policy. Promoting communitarian understandings requires more open-ended approaches to teaching such as Richardson demonstrated. With digital technologies gaining progressively greater influence in schools, the opportunities for social connectedness have been enhanced alongside an increasing emphasis on individual devices. This article briefly explores interconnections between experimentation, context and community.

Background‘The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda’, represents a significant threat to maize production, a major staple crop in Asian countries.MethodsIn pursuit of more effective control of this insect pest, our study assessed the physiological and biochemical effects of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae against the larvae of S. frugiperda.ResultsResults revealed that, following nine days of treatment, a high concentration of conidia (1.5x107 conidia/mL-1) was toxic to all stages of larvae (second to fifth instar), resulting in 97% mortality of the second instar, 89% mortality of the third instar, 77% mortality of the fourth instar, and 72% mortality of fifth instar. All larval instars were found to have dose-dependent mortality effects. Treated S. frugiperda larvae further displayed significant physiological, morphological, and behavioral changes. Here, treated larvae displayed significantly lower levels of acetylcholinesterase, α-carboxylesterase, and β-carboxylesterase enzyme activity when compared to control groups. Treated larvae underwent an outward morphological change as the result of a decrease in the exterior cuticle of the anal papillae and a demelanization of the interior cuticle. Treated larvae also exhibited abnormal feeding behaviors as a consequence of the negative impact of conidia treatment on the neuromuscular system. Investigation into the effect of M. anisopliae on the non-target organism, the earthworm Eudrilus eugeniae, revealed that M. anisopliae conidia did not produce significant pathogenicity following three days of treatment. Furthermore, histological analysis revealed no significant effect of the entomopathogenic fungi on the gut tissue of the non-target organism.ConclusionThis study highlights the potential of M. anisopliae in the control of S. frugiperda.

For parasitoids, the host represents the sole source of nutrients for the developing immature. Subsequently, host quality is an important factor affecting immature development and the resulting fitness of the emerging parasitoid, with impacts on fecundity, longevity and offspring sex ratio. Host age is an integral component of host quality and a key factor in host selection by the female parasitoid. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of decreasing host quality (determined by increasing host age) on adult life history traits (size, wing loading, longevity, and fecundity) and nutritional reserves (protein, lipid and glycogen concentrations) of the parasitoid Trichogramma brassicae. Higher quality hosts resulted in the production of larger offspring with increased resource reserves and enhanced mobility. One-day-old eggs contained significantly more protein and triglyceride than 25- and 45–day-old eggs. Quality of host and fitness of reared wasps decreased due to host aging. Parasitoids reared on 1-day-old hosts were larger, with greater fecundity and longevity, a reduced wind loading index, and produced a higher proportion of female offspring when compared with those reared on 25- and 45-day-old hosts. In addition, wasps reared on 1-day-old hosts contained higher energy resources, as determined by triglyceride, glycogen and protein reserves, which are essential to successful offspring production. One-day-old hosts can therefore be considered as the best age for producing wasps with greater fitness, since they contain the highest amount of protein, glycogen, and triglyceride. This has implications for the mass rearing of T. brassicae and enhancing the efficacy of this biological control agent. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Walking speeds were calculated for nine clones of the peach potato aphid Myzus persicae collected from three countries along a latitudinal cline of its European distribution from Sweden to Spain (Sweden, UK and Spain), and the effects of collection origin and intra and intergenerational acclimation were investigated. Walking speeds declined with decreasing temperature, with maximum performance at temperatures closest to acclimation temperature (fastest median walking speed of 5.8 cm min–1 was recorded for clone UK 3, collected from the UK, at 25°C after acclimating to 25°C for one generation). Following acclimation at both 20°C and 25°C, walking ceased (as indicated by median walking speeds of 0.0 cm min–1) at temperatures as high as 7.5°C and 12.5°C. However, acclimation at 10°C enabled mobility to occur to temperatures as low as 0°C. There was no relationship between mobility and latitude of collection, suggesting that large scale mixing of aphids may occur across Europe. However, clonal variation was suggested, with clone UK 3 outperforming the majority of other clones across all temperatures at which mobility was maintained following acclimation at 10°C for one and three generations and at 25°C for one generation. The Scandinavian clones consistently outperformed their temperate and Mediterranean counterparts at the majority of temperatures following acclimation for three generations at 25°C. Activity thresholds were measured in nine anholocyclic clones of the peach-potato aphid Myzus persicae collected along a latitudinal cline of its European distribution from Sweden to Spain. The effects of collection origin and intra- and intergenerational acclimation on these thresholds were investigated. Low-temperature (10°C) acclimation for one generation depressed the movement threshold and chill coma temperatures, with the largest reduction in movement threshold recorded for clone UK 1 (8.8-2.5°C) and in chill coma for UK 2 (4.8-2.0°C). High-temperature (25°C) acclimation for one generation increased the heat movement threshold and heat coma temperature with the largest increase in the movement threshold (40.1-41.1°C) and heat coma (41.4-42.3°C) recorded for clone Swed 1. There was no further intergenerational acclimation over three generations. High-temperature activity thresholds were less plastic than low-temperature thresholds, and, consequently, thermal activity ranges were expanded following low-temperature acclimation. No constant affect of acclimation was observed on chill coma recovery, although clonal differences were observed with Swed 1 and 3 requiring some of the longest complete recovery times. There was no relationship between latitude and activity thresholds with the exception of heat coma data where Scandinavian clones Swed 2 and 3 consistently displayed some of the lowest heat coma temperatures (e.g. 41.3°C for both clones at 20°C) and Mediterranean clones Span 1, 2 and 3 displayed some of the highest (e.g. 42.1, 41.9 and 42.5°C, respectively, at 20°C). These data suggest that clonal mixing could occur over a large scale across Europe, limiting local adaptation to areas where conditions enable long-term persistence of populations, e.g. adaptation to higher temperatures in the Mediterranean region. It is suggested that aphid thermal tolerance could be governed more by clonal type than the latitudinal origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
